[Bug 92428] Re: Feisty Fawn update loses access to root admin privelages

2007-03-16 Thread Jeremy Riley
I believe this can be classified as resolved; at least for the open
source community :)

The proprietary NVIDIA driver, changes the script of certain files that
were remodified to their new defaults, by the update process; but only
slightly. It appears that for some unexplained (as of yet) reason, this
faulting of ownership of files, leads to the non Ubuntu standard (but
still open source in nature) program - VirtualBox - to hang the
/etc/group file and destroy it. But ONLY if VirtualBox is running during
the update process! At least with my particular setup.

I should also note here that the NVIDIA driver is the latest
experimental release; and that at time of download for use with my
system, my card was not listed as being supported...(it works; but is
not supported)...

When prompted during update (with VirtualBox running), if I want to keep
my modified /etc/X11/xorg.conf file or update to the new settings is
when things hung for me. Just error and continue install of the rest of
the updates, no chance to accept or deny changing of xorg.conf file
(VirtualBox crashes at this point as well). If not running VirtualBox
during update, everything goes smooth as butter; well, except having to
restart after updates complete, and reinstall the skipped xorg update
caused by the modifications by the NVIDIA driver install!

So this can probably be summed up as a PEBKAC bug. (Problem Exists
Between Keyboard And Chair) - In that DO NOT run other applications
while installing 200+ updates! And - DO NOT buy proprietary coded video
cards! LOL

If NVIDIA had open source drivers, I would more than likely never had
this problem; as they would not have caused such a ruckus during update
times!

The previous errors mentioned in my original posting were from the
NVIDIA driver as well, but before this, they always worked themselves
out... upon restart.

Again, Thank You BRIAN - YOU ROCK!

I wrote a nice posting on my Blog about my experience as well! If I
should not post my blog link here, please be kind and edit it out and
post to me that it is not allowed. I do not want to get kicked off, as I
would love to stick around and take my knowledge of Linux to the GURU-
elevation!

[Bug 82097] Re: Geany will not stop running

2007-03-16 Thread Frodo Baggins
I got a crash when I pressed F4.
Comparing the crash dump (full log) I got with the one uploaded here, it looks
like a sig11 in the same function (gtk_widget_grab_focus).
nnelson seems to be using an SMP machine whereas I am on UP.

Repeated these steps and consistently got a crash at
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

1. Opened an existing file in geany.
2. Pressed F4.

Should I report a new bug for this ?

I'm currently running Feisty on a Toshiba Satellite A100, which uses the
snd-hda-intel ALSA driver. After upgrading from 2.6.20-8-generic to
2.6.20-9-generic, the sound is an order of magnitude quieter; turning
both the hardware and software volume controls up to maximum gives a
barely-audible whisper. When viewing alsamixer, several sliders are
missing or inactive, including the "master" slider (which merely has an
on/mute switch instead of an adjustable sound level).

- From what I can see, the 2.6.20-10 upgrade still contains the broken
+ From what I can see, the 2.6.20-11 upgrade still contains the broken

[Bug 93019] Network manager loses connection but does not show in knetworkmanager and pretty much locks up system.

2007-03-16 Thread Puck
Public bug reported:

I'm using a Netgear wg311v3 with the initial driver release and the NDIS
wrapper. When ever my wireless loses connection because of a bad signal
(I'm assumig this because I had frequent drops before because of a weak
signal) knetworkmanager does now show it. If I try to reconnect to the
network or connect to a different network it'll just say that it's
trying to connect and it'll stay on that, never connecting. After the
disconnection most programs will not run even after killing X with
ctrl+alt+backspace, not even X again. Even if I switch to TTY1 I can't
even run sudo killall on anything. All I can do is ctrl-alt-del and
restart.

[Bug 93016] adept notifier doesn't check if adept is running

2007-03-16 Thread AaronPeterson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: adept-notifier

kubuntu 6.10

Simple bug to fix, I've reported a "general bug" about a very similar
topic, but this one is specific enough to take action on.

sometimes when I click on the system tray icon, nothing happens... (I
have a slow machine)

I click on it again.. (I know to be patient... but I just can't help
myself)

Before long, I have 5 kde su windows poping up asking me if I want to
run adept updater...

The shear number of pop up windows reminds me of the Mac vs PC
advertisement where the macintosh is and PC are talking, being
interupted by the PC's many pop up windows..

Anyway, I suggest that it would be worthwile to change the icon after
it's been activated for a time delay?(proper way would be to watch the
child process) indicating that it has in fact been run, and deny extra
clicks.

[Bug 93014] Desktop Effects applet should warn you to reboot if you've just installed nvidia driver but haven't rebooted yet

2007-03-16 Thread VF
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: desktop-effects

After selecting Preferences->Desktop Effects with an nvidia card, it
offers to install the nvidia drivers needed. After doing that, it tells
you to reboot or it won't work. If you decide not to reboot, then
immediately open Desktop Effects again, it opens fine and offers the
'enable' button even though you need to reboot to enable the nvidia
driver. It should warn you to reboot first.

Charles, you do like to take the long way around. There's a tool to do
that for, uupdate. You just run it in the extracted Debian source
package, and point it to the new source tarball. It does everything
(including changelog) automagically. Much simpler :)

Ubuntu Ultimate Edition 1.2 is not a part of ubuntu. therefore, we cant
fix it.

ubiquity has gone through major changes since edgy, so is likely not
still relevant (and the ultimate edition has likely changed it anyway)

Well, there are two possibilities :

a) You use the upstream sources of maxima at version 5.11 and install
them with traditional methods, i.e., not through binary packages.

b) You create binary packages with the method I suggested before.

The reason why I proposed you to start from the source package
5.10.0-6ubuntu1 is not because it makes it easier to contribute, but
because it helps you to keep advantage from the packaging system. If you
chose method a) and Ubuntu releases a package version 5.12, nothing will
happen. Howerver, with method b), you have good chances of upgrading
with a simple apt-get upgrade.

A source package in the debian format is actually a set of three files.
I have checked on my computer wether the upgrade was possible and it
seems so. I have put the result on my personnal website, feel free to
use it. Be aware however that this package does not include the
modifications specific to Ubuntu.

[Bug 71635] Re: madwifi unloads immediately inserting module

2007-03-16 Thread MFeif
I have what may be a clue.

I'm having the same problem, and I noticed this in dmesg:
[17179641.976000] wifi0: Atheros 5212: mem=0xe890, irq=193
[17179642.364000] ACPI: PCI interrupt for device :00:0b.0 disabled
[17179642.364000] ath_pci: driver unloaded
[17179642.368000] ath_rate_sample: unloaded
[17179642.372000] ath_hal: driver unloaded

Notice irq=193. Ok, here's the contents of my /proc/interrupts:
   CPU0
  0: 42657IO-APIC-edge timer
  7: 0IO-APIC-edge parport0
  8: 3IO-APIC-edge rtc
  9: 1 IO-APIC-level acpi
 14: 3200IO-APIC-edge ide0
 15:106IO-APIC-edge ide1
177: 96 IO-APIC-level ohci_hcd:usb1
185: 0 IO-APIC-level ohci_hcd:usb2
193:395 IO-APIC-level eth1
201: 1190 IO-APIC-level ohci1394, eth0
NMI: 0
LOC: 42395
ERR: 0
MIS: 14

So, it seems that 193 is taken by eth1 (I have two wired network cards
in this box, and one pci wireless AR5212 card.)

I tried getting into the BIOS and re-setting the ECSD, but that didn't
change anything. I also tried changing the IRQ's around in the BIOS
setting, but of course the BIOS doesn't know anything about irq #193, so
I can't reserve it.

I will try and remove that nic, but it will be tricky as the box is
headless, and that's my way in without wifi ;-)

Melvin, no problems :) You're going to run into these problems as you
run a development release, which is why people new to ubuntu should not

[Bug 91987] Re: [Feisty] Need to reboot to import music into rhythmbox.

2007-03-16 Thread Bastanteroma
Restarting doesn't make songs show up reliably - I'm not sure what does.
They seem to trickle in, first a few tracks from an album, then more,
then the rest. The songs that won't import also won't play in rhythmbox
from the context menu in nautilus, but they'll open in totem or play in
the preview within nautilus itself.

[Bug 70961] Re: Keyboard not responding on install (edgy)

2007-03-16 Thread Jim Campbell
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug. Unfortunately we can't
fix it, because your description didn't include enough information. You
may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively"
. We'd be
grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the
problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems.
 Thanks!

[Bug 93006] mythfrontend crashes on logout

2007-03-16 Thread Jed
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mythtv

whenever I exit mythfrontend normally, the program seems to halt
normally and then seg faults. I don't believe there is any damage to
the program or database, but it's still a strange bug nonetheless.

I was instructed to attach /var/crash/_usr_bin_mythfrontend.1000.crash
but it's 6.3MB and I don't think that's appropriate to post here. If
there are specific sections of that file (or any output) you would like
to see, please let me know. Here is the command line output from
beginning of execution to end:

Hi,

I am really sorry to have been unclear.

Indeed, if you know how to deal with debian source pacakges (the format,
not the distribution), do not wait and make one for yourself to build
maxima 5.11 .deb binary packages. This is the quickest way to get what
you want.

The easiest starting point is the current source package, which is 5.10.
With some (hopefully easy) work, you can turn it into a 5.11 source
package

Have a nice day,

[Bug 92715] Re: Why not use 5.11

2007-03-16 Thread yigal.weinstein
So you are saying it is better for me to not build a deb file of the
most recent stable Maxima ( or any package for that matter) which has
been out for 3 months now and is not in Debian and which I am pretty
sure I can at least for my computer i386 using the appropriate methods.
But it is better to for me to download the source of an older version,
build it and use it? Where is the logic? I am sure there is some but I
don't get it. It is not like I won't be interested in giving my package
back to the Debian maintainer of Maxima.

My question is why should I have to wait for a Debian maintainer who
might be very busy? Instead I can build the new package and give it to
him?

[Bug 70961] Re: Keyboard not responding on install (edgy)

2007-03-16 Thread chris nielsen
I have had mixed results with my keyboard, both during the live install
and once my system has been installed. I cannot figure out why it works
on some occasions and not others. If my computer hibernates, then I
cannot get it to wake up...presumably because the keyboard is not
functioning.

[Bug 93001] xserver display does not come back after resume

2007-03-16 Thread Hezekiah Carty
Public bug reported:

This is on a Sony Vaio VGN-S260 laptop. Pentium-M 1.7ghz, ATI
9200mobility video card with 32mb of video ram using the xorg ati
driver.

After resuming from a suspend-to-ram under the latest Feisty, the X
server will sometimes not display anything. The screen is black, not
even a mouse cursor, and the backlight is on.

I can switch to text VTs. I do not have this problem on Dapper, which I
am currently running as the main OS on this laptop. I did not have this
problem when I tested Edgy on this laptop, though I didn't use Edgy for
very long.
