RE: Apple getting cheap

So did you throw your old stream away or pass it on to an organisation that can
recycle it or it's parts

Throwing digital devices away in to landfill situations is not a great way to
get rid of technology

We need to be thinking more of how to recycle e-waste.

I know I've made mistakes and probably will continue to,

But I do try to make an effort now to recycle e-waste.

Overall I do agree with your thoughts

I have absolutely no doubt that Apple has received tens of thousands of such
complaints at a minimum. Unfortunately, the environmental optics of this are
too good to really back out of. The packing boxes can be much thinner. They
have tons of repeat customers who already have chargers which they're totally
happy with. There are many charging options out there for people to pick from
even on Apple's own store. Apple does remind people to buy a charger during the
process so that'll help somewhat. While Apple does take note of complaints, it
doesn't seem to be prone to changing course because of them. They got massive
pushback when they removed the headphone jack. Now, you almost never hear
complaints about that. The overall customer base just gets used to whatever
they decide. For people on the annoied side of these big decisions, there's a
sense that it does more emotional good to vent on public lists than write to
Apple. Until they make a truly unforgivable blunder, that's how things go in
large ecosystems like this.

Morning all,

I'm just wondering why You aren't all putting this in writing to apple directly
rather than venting to a list where no one has the ability to change the way
apple do what they do!

I'd also like to point out that apple have been selling products without the
power brick included in the packaging since the device was released to the
world markets,

That being the ipods,
I have never owned an iPod that had a charging brick included in it's packaging.

And I don't remember ever hearing people bitch about that not being there.

But back to previous comments,

Rather than venting to the list,

Why do you not all put your pen to paper and write to apple about this issue
you have and see what they come back with.

For me, I've got enough bricks around to charge all my devices at once.

There are a couple of issues here when considering Apple’s approach to chargers
as I see it.

Firstly, I have six 5 Watt chargers here that came with various Apple devices
over the years. When I updated to an iPhone XR these 5 Watt chargers, one of
them came with the phone will not charge the XR at its fastest rate which begs
the question as to why it came with such a low rated charger in the first place.

I would rather not just discard these chargers, but finding someone who has a
use for them is difficult as they probably have redundant units themselves.

Personally I bought a 18 Watt charger from Amazon made by Anker.

As I understand it, newer devices made by Apple come with a USB C to Lightning
cable. This implies that they assume people have a USB power source available
which may or may not be the case. After all, why supply a cable but no
charger, why not both or neither.

I don’t consider it to be a rip off on Apple’s behalf I completely understand
and support any action that is environmentally friendly. But it does look
rather inconsistent.

Yes, if you have an older charger and cable you can charge your new device but
not at its optimal rate.

Apple are rather in a no-win situation, what ever they do will earn them
criticism from some quarters.

Strange Issue with RS Games

2021-04-18 Thread Esther
Hi, Everyone,

Just this afternoon, I'm having a very strange issue with the RS Games app. I
was going to play a game with a friend and when both of us got into the Yotzee
game, (I know I spelled the name of this game incorrectly) I went into Join
Game, and Put in all the information that was needed such as my password. and
clicked to play. My friend began playing and scored his points. Then it was
my turn, but when I tried to play, there was that buzzing sound that sometimes
is heard and I couldn't perform any of the keystrokes needed to choose such
things as Full House, straights, etc. I got out of the game, turned my phone
off, and then on again, and the same buzzing sound was heard when I tried to
play. I also deleted the app and put it back on again with the same issue. I
don't know if I was locked out, or what the problem could be. I've been using
RS Games for many years and have had no trouble playing either with friends or
with Bots. In fact, I played last night with no issues.

Maybe I should try again tomorrow and see if I'd be able to play again without
that buzzing noise. If any of you have suggestions, I would appreciate them.

Thanks very much.

Need best description of how to use outlook in conversations.

2021-04-18 Thread regina alvarado
Can someone give me a place to look to learn how to read conversations in
outlook with voiceover please? It is either that or can someone give me some
instruction here? I have found where to delete conversations, obviously I can
use compose and I found where to get to the next message. However where do I
touch the beginning of the message or how do I read them in sequence? I also
saw where you can use Cortana to play your emails, but I am assuming that we
cannot do that. I generally like the app a lot, but just as I was confused
about how to actually read the regular mail I’m confused here also can somebody
help me please? Thanks so much. I know it must be something simple that I
missing, but no matter what I do it skips messages and I can’t tell where to
read them. Thanks again for any help with this. I wanted an app that would be
better than the native app, but I seem to be still having as much problem with
this as I did with the native app.

2021-04-18 Thread Dave Clement
Hi,

This should do it...

1. Touch the status bar at the top of the screen

2. 3-finger swipe up to bring up the Control Centre.

3. 3-finger swipe down to bring up the Notification Centre.

Hope this helps.

RE: Customize the Charging Sound on Your iPhone or iPad, Here's How!

2021-04-18 Thread Richard Turner
Mike,
Have you done this from anything other than Apple Music?

I wanted to try it, but I don't want the short clip in the music library, and
the author seems to say you can use Dropbox, but I'm not finding an option to
use anything outside of Apple for the sound clip.

Certainly nothing important, but it would be kind of fun to try.

Thanks,

Customize the Charging Sound on Your iPhone or iPad, Here's How!
By Kelly

iPhone owners are accustomed to hearing a familiar chime when they plug in
their phone to charge. Up until iOS 14, you could not change this sound. If you
didn't like it, there was nothing you could do about it unless you were willing
to jailbreak your phone..

But, starting with iOS 14, Apple freed you from this default sound by adding a
hidden setting that lets you customize it.

Though, changing this sound is not as easy as going into Settings and choosing
a new sound.

This sound is controlled by the action of charging your phone and can be
changed within the Automation feature of the Shortcuts app.

This automation option lets you set a custom sound both when you start charging
and when you stop charging.

Preparing a Sound

You can choose music from iTunes or create your own clip that you can
drop
into Apple Music. Use a site that hosts fun sound
clips
 you might like to try.

The shorter the clip, the better, as you don't want to play a five-minute song
each time you plug in your phone.

You can use a music clip in iTunes on your Windows PC or in the Music app on
your Mac computer. You also can upload a clip into Dropbox or your iCloud Drive.

Applying Your New Sound

Once your music clips are in place, you then can select them using the
Shortcuts app as follows.

  1. Open the Shortcuts app on iOS 14 or later.
  2. Go to the Automations tab.
  3. Select Create Personal Automation.
  4. Scroll to the bottom and select the Charger option.
  5. Select "Is Connected" or "Is Disconnected" to set the tone for when your
phone is charging or removed from the charger.
  6. Then select Next at the top right corner.
  7. Select Add Action and then Media.
  8. Scroll to find and then select Play Music.
  9. Tap on "Music" next to Play Music.
  10. Browse through your library and select the song you want to play.
  11. Select Next in the upper right corner.
  12. Turn off the toggle for Ask Before Running, which allows the music to
play automatically when your phone is connected to disconnected from the
charger.
  13. Follow the steps to confirm the changes and hit done to create the new
action.

Testing Your New Sound

TIDAL MQA iOS Apple set-up for VoiceOver users?

2021-04-18 Thread Kevin Chao
A fair amount of us blind VoiceOver users are into high fidelity sound that
music streaming services, like Tidal provide. Based on this video
 there are 5 things required
for TIDAL MQA iOS Apple Setup.

The 2 things I’m curious to hear what others are using, recommend, and are
best for blind VoiceOver user are:

   - Headphone amp that is plug-and-play that doesn’t require switching
   between different modes.
   - Headphone recommendation to really appreciate and be immerse in the
   TIDAL MQA.
I’m looking forward to lively conversation, great suggestions, and
   recommendations. Thanks!

RE: Apple getting cheap

2021-04-18 Thread Carolyn
To me, it makes sense to sell a product with whatever it takes to operates,
which includes, in my mind at least, a charger. So many people just put cable
into computer, but when I do that with my wireless charger, my computer does
not like it, protests from time to time, that an unknown device is being used,
so I just got an old Victor Stream charger for the wireless cable, never though
to complain to anyone at all about it, just found a solution.

There's a lot more to an Apple product then just whether it includes a charger
or not. Of course, if this is a deal breaker for you then by all means switch
to another product, but I don't think there's anything wrong with people asking
for a charger with their product. It's perfectly understandable to me that for
the price Apple is charging for their products one could expect a charger. I
can also see where people can want a charger without having to change to a new
device and ecosystem.

Of course, Apple may not listen or may have already made the calculation that
the few sales they lose will be more then made up by how much they save by not
including chargers or the good will they get by being more environmentally
friendly.

As I've said before, I like Apple's move myself, but I see where people are
coming from, and I don't think people should be told to just buy another device
or be happy with whatever Apple gives them.

one other thing I'd like to say is that if you buy an apple product ask if
there is a charger with it and if not buy one. nobody is forcing anyone to use
an apple product just stop expecting everything to be there for you.

How to dispoay display the keyboard?

2021-04-18 Thread Ann Byrne
After clicking the search button on a particular web site, sometimes
the keyboard is displayed and sometimes not; sometimes I can dictate
the query but sometimes doubble-tapping just turns on music. How am
I reliably able to get the keyboard to show without using the
bluetooth keyboard?

thx,

RE: Apple getting cheap

2021-04-18 Thread Christopher Chaltain

Re: Voice Dream Reader exporting text?

2021-04-18 Thread 'Harry Bell' via VIPhone
Thanks, richard! I seem to have solved the issue by importing the VDR .txt
files into textedit on the Mac and setting preferences to open and save as
plain text. I don’t really understand the complexities, but at least it is
working to read the files on the Focus Blue!

RE: Setting up new iPhone with wireless transfer by Alan Lemly

2021-04-18 Thread Richard Turner
If the SIMM is there, check with AT to see if the new phone is set to be
activated which would then have your number active on the new phone and not the
old phone.

Hello Noe,

If you got your phone from AT, it probably already has a sim card in it. If
it doesn't, you'll be asked for one during setup. In that case, the phone will
include a tool in the box for removing the sim card. There's a small hole on
the right side of the phone that the tool fits in. You slide in the tool and
press, and a little tray containing the sim card pops out. Replace the old one
with the new. It only fits one way.

Greetings,
Since alan did such a thorough job of writing out the steps to transfer data
from your old iPhone to a new one, I asked him if I could post it on my web
site as a word file.
Fortuantely, he said yes.
If you are looking for it, you can go to my web site:
www.turner42.com
and look for the words: Setting up new iPhone with wireless transfer by Alan
Lemly.
If you navigate by headings and get to the UsefulApps heading, I tis the link
just before that.
You can either click on it which will either open it or ask you if you want to
save it, all depending on your browser settings; or use your applications key
or shift+f10 and select save target as and save it that way.

This way, if someone asks about doing the Wireless Transfer, it will be
available.

HTH,

Richard

RE: No Longer Able to Activate Links in Amazon Security Alert Text Messages

2021-04-18 Thread Debby
Hi Sharon,

You are not alone in this because I have a friend using voiceover who had the
same problem. While focused on the message, have you tried turning the rotor to
links and then flicking to the link? I had a message on which that method
worked, however, I don’t think it was Amazon. By the way I got the tip from
this very list.

Take care and stay safe!

Subject: No Longer Able to Activate Links in Amazon Security Alert Text Messages

Hello,

For whatever reason, and it's driving me crazy, I can no longer activate links
in security alert text messages from Amazon. Such messages get sent when
Amazon accounts are accessed from unknown devices, and/or when sensitive
account areas, E.G., change password, are accessed. Normally, it's just a
matter of double tapping the link after which a page appears allowing one to
approve or deny the request. On my iPhone SE2 running the current version of
iOS, double tapping such links does absolutely nothing. I handed my iPhone to
a partially sighted friend, who, after I turned off VoiceOver, was able to
activate the link for me.

Needless to say, I feel somewhat foolish having successfully used iOS with
voiceover for several years and now find myself with a very basic problem.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks and all the best

Re: Apple getting cheapq

2021-04-18 Thread lenron brown
Damn people are insane. You expect certain things from a company
because of what they provide. Apple could just sell some of you the
battery for the phone and you would buck up and buy every single
peace. Anyways yes if you can get the fast charger it makes things
loads better. Apple should have been selling these in the box for
years.

So, you will find out the quickest by trying one and see.
Or write Winston directly.
I suppose you could bring up the properties on a computer and see if you can

Re: Apple getting cheap

2021-04-18 Thread Michael Feir
I have absolutely no doubt that Apple has received tens of thousands of
such complaints at a minimum. Unfortunately, the environmental optics of
this are too good to really back out of. The packing boxes can be much
thinner. They have tons of repeat customers who already have chargers which
they're totally happy with. There are many charging options out there for
people to pick from even on Apple's own store. Apple does remind people to
buy a charger during the process so that'll help somewhat. While Apple does
take note of complaints, it doesn't seem to be prone to changing course
because of them. They got massive pushback when they removed the headphone
jack. Now, you almost never hear complaints about that. The overall
customer base just gets used to whatever they decide. For people on the
annoied side of these big decisions, there's a sense that it does more
emotional good to vent on public lists than write to Apple. Until they make
a truly unforgivable blunder, that's how things go in large ecosystems like
this.

RE: Apple getting cheap

2021-04-18 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Morning all,

Having listened to people vent their personal thoughts on the pros and cons of
apple not including the power bricks / AC power adapter in the packaging for
phones etc,

Voice Dream Reader exporting text?

2021-04-18 Thread 'Harry Bell' via VIPhone
I want to get files from Voice Dream Reader in plain text format so that I can
put them on the micro SD card which I can then insert into my new Focus Blue 14
5th generation. If I open a VDR file, double tap on Document and select all
text, will the exported .txt file be UTF-8 formatted plain text which the Focus
guide insists is the only acceptable plain text format for Scratchpad?
Thanks
Harry

RE: Setting up new iPhone with wireless transfer by Alan Lemly

2021-04-18 Thread Noe Villeda
Hello group,

I will try to set up my S E 2020 tomorrow.

How do I remove the sim card from my old phone, to install it to the 2020? I
received this phone from AT, and I have no clue how to switch out the sim
card.

Greetings,

Since alan did such a thorough job of writing out the steps to transfer data
from your old iPhone to a new one, I asked him if I could post it on my web
site as a word file.

Fortuantely, he said yes.

If you are looking for it, you can go to my web site: www.turner42.com
and look for the words: Setting up new iPhone with
wireless transfer by Alan Lemly.

If you navigate by headings and get to the UsefulApps heading, I tis the link
just before that.

You can either click on it which will either open it or ask you if you want to
save it, all depending on your browser settings; or use your applications key
or shift+f10 and select save target as and save it that way.

This way, if someone asks about doing the Wireless Transfer, it will be
available.

HTH,
