Re: Podcast app question and overall general podcast question
I think you've always been able to just put a URL into the search field of the Apple Podcasts app to subscribe to any podcast. For example, this article came out right after the podcasts app was released: http://www.cultofmac.com/179374/subscribe-to-any-podcast-directly-with-apples-podcast-app-ios-tips/ On 09/03/2013 01:42 AM, Sieghard Weitzel wrote: Hi Shane, At one point Apple did somewhat control what Podcasts you could listen to with their app. I really am not an authority on the Apple Podcast app since I only used it very little when it first came out. I was at first excited and thought this would be good, but I think most people were quite disappointed by it. It definitely was not the polished "it just works" kind of product Apple is known for. They had some sort of catalogue and I think if a particular Podcast was not part of that you couldn't get it. I think at this point this restriction is lifted so you should be able to find most Podcasts you find with Downcast or if not use a specific URL/feed. I only listen regularly to about 2 or 3 different Podcasts and I really like Downcast so at this point I don't see much reason to use the Apple Podcast app. As for not being able to stream, I assume there might be a setting in the Apple Podcast app (possibly you have to access it via the Settings app) where maybe by default streaming over 3G/LTE is turned off. Once again, this is just a guess. So, are you limited to what podcast you can download depending on what app you use? In other words, if you chose the Apple Podcasts app, would you find only what Apple wanted you to, and with Downcast, you would have more of a selection to choose from, as the ppodcasts would be coming from different feeds? I was able to stream a podcast from Podcasts, I had no Internet at my house, so I went to a friends house, and it streamed. I'm thinking maybe that's why it didn't stream. Thanks as always for your informative assistance bro. It is a very feature rich Podcast app and whether you download or stream your Podcasts is completely customizable. You can even set it to download certain Podcasts while you not do so for others and you can tell it whether to allow streaming via 3G or restrict it to Wi-Fi only. The same goes for what to do with the Podcasts after you stream or download them. You can tell it globally to keep no Podcasts, to only keep unplayed Podcasts, to keep a certain number of unplayed or a certain number of all Podcasts. Then once again you can overwrite the global setting by defining a different setting for a certain Podcast, individual settings always have priority over the global setting. Downcast is fully Voiceover friendly and I believe there is a Podcast about it on Applevis. It is very easy to search for Podcasts by name, by URL or to import them. You can even make Playlists, for example, if you have 3 different tech Podcasts, you could make a playlist for them. If Apple was smart they'd buy out Downcast. OK, so maybe that was a poor choice of words, I am not implying they are not smart *smile*, but there are definitely apps which do what some of their stock apps do which are way better. Given Apple's resources compared to say those of the developer of Downcast I find this rather interesting. Just for completeness sake, the app iCatcher which is another Podcast app is also fully Voiceover accessible and quite good, but I think if it came down to a vote more people would vote for Downcast. When I just looked up the links I noticed iCatcher said at the top of the app description that it was on sale. However, the price of $2.99 I wrote down below is what was listed and I thought that was the regular price. Yeah I searched a little more and saw some video podcasts... This app seems very easy to navigate with VO, which is something that always helps. Another question I have is, when you subscribe to a podcast, can you subscribe to it without it downloading to your device? In other words, subscribe to it, but just stream them? RE: Podcast app question and overall general podcast question
Shane, You can set whether you want to download any Podcasts in the global settings. Double tap the "More" tab at the bottom right of the screen. Now double tap "Settings" at the top of the screen. Find the "New Episode Action" heading. Underneath that double tap of whichever option is selected, you will get the following list of choices: Do Nothing Download All New Download most recent Mark all new for streaming Mark most recent for streaming You can then also set which episodes to keep a bit further down in the settings and tell Downcast if Automatic Downloading should be done "Never", "Always" or on "WiFi only". If you set your global settings, for example, you tell Downcast to "Mark all new for streaming", but you want to "download the but most recent" for a particular Podcast, you can do this by double tapping on that Podcast, then double tap on the Settings button at the bottom right of that screen. Here you can change the global settings for that Podcast only and whichever settings you choose will take priority over the global settings. Actually this thread prompted me to go out and buy Downcast. After opening it, I double tapped on add podcasts and got a list of categories. One of the categories I looked at was news and politics. Yes, Downcast handles both audio and video Podcasts. RE: Podcast app question and overall general podcast question
Hello Ketan, I don't think you can directly sync Podcasts from Downcast to your computer unless maybe you were using a Mac and purchased the Downcast app which from the Mac App Store which came out a few weeks ago. If you are using a PC it would probably be easiest if you exported your Podcast list from Downcast and imported it to iTunes and then use iTunes to manage which Podcasts you want to keep or not keep. Maybe somebody who does more with Podcasts has a better suggestion, I just listen to a few Podcasts on my iPhone and for the most part I delete them afterwards. If there really is one I want to download to my computer I usually just do so from whichever Podcast website it is on. RE: Podcast app question and overall general podcast question
Hi Shane, At one point Apple did somewhat control what Podcasts you could listen to with their app. RE: Podcast app question and overall general podcast question
Hi Shane, The Podcast app of choice for most people on this list as well as many sighted people is Downcast. I did buy the app a long time ago so if I look it up on my iPhone or in iTunes when I am signed in it only asks me to download it since I once bought it and I can't see if the price there shows up differently. Anyhow, here are the links: Downcast: $1.99 https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/downcast/id393858566?mt=8 iCatcher: $2.99 https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/icatcher!-podcast-app/id414419105?mt=8 Regards, Sieghard -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Shane clark Sent: Monday, September 02, 2013 5:32 PM To: accessible-...@freelists.org; viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Podcast app question and overall general podcast question Hi, So I downloaded the Apple Podcast app again yesterday, after not using it for awhile, and noticed that you now have to download the podcast versese just streaming it to the phone. I thought at one time, you could stream them instead of downloading them, was U wrong here? Is there an app like Podcast that gives you the option to stream them, but has the same amount of content? Also, when you subscribe to a certain podcast, does it put the podcast in your phone, then you download it, or is it already downloaded for youV And finally, what's the best way to delete them from the Podcast app? I see the podcast, then recently played, and a few other places where the podcast is at within the app. Thanks for all help, Shane.
