Re: [Vyatta-users] vyatta login

2007-09-21 Thread Justin Fletcher
vyatta/vyatta should certainly be correct. Since you can log in as root/vyatta,
just run "xorpsh" as root; it'll put you in the Vyatta CLI. As Marat
pointed out,
there may be useful information in /var/log/messages, or "show log" from the CLI
to help solve the issues logging as vyatta.

Best,
Justin

Re: [Vyatta-users] vyatta login

2007-09-21 Thread Marat Nepomnyashy
Hi Mike,

Actually 'rtrmgr' is not running, in the 'ps -ef' output you're just seeing the
process that is corresponding to the 'grep rtrmgr' command.

I strongly suspect that your configuration is invalid. Could you have possibly
booted with a floppy, either physical, or VMWare virtual, which you previously
used for another configuration? Maybe you're booting of a hard drive instead
of LiveCD?

Please check '/mnt/floppy/config/config.boot', and
'/opt/vyatta/etc/config/config.boot' for the configuration file the 'rtrmgr' is
attempting to use.

  Marat,

  Here are the results.
I have not been able to configure anything yet, so there isn't anything in
the /opt/vyatta/config/ directory.

Upon executing this cmd: 'ps - ef | grep rtrmgr', I received this output,
verifying that an instance of rtrmgr is running - "root 4871 4827 0
15:47 tty1 00:00:00 grep rtrmgr"

Attached is the /var/log/messages log file and another updated one, from
after I tried to run "xorpsh" as outlined in ebele okwuosa and Michael Larson's
conversation about login difficulties with v2.2.

Hope this is of some help and a solution can be arrived at.

  Thanks,
  Mike

2007-09-21 Thread Robert Bays
That's odd. I thought I added the CCISS drivers in the kernel, I just
didn't change the install script. Looking in the kernel config file
both CONFIG_BLK_CPQ_DA and CONFIG_BLK_CPQ_CISS_DA are set as modules.
If I remember correctly, the kernel setup the devices under
/dev/cciss/... After you booted the livecd lsmod didn't show either of
these modules loaded?

Re: [Vyatta-users] User and Password Management

2007-09-21 Thread Robert Bays
The user password system is a little sub-optimal. We are in the process
of changing the CLI and in doing so user setup will hopefully get fixed
as well. Until then you could add your user to the file in
/etc/tmp/passwd and /etc/tmp/shadow. Those files overwrite the system
file on startup.

Cheers,
Robert.

 Hi Jeff,

I'd guess that you're having an issue with the auto
 negotiation
of speed and/or duplex on that interface. You can set these
 commands as follows:

vyatta # set interfaces ethernet eth0
 duplex ?
 Possible completions:
   autoSet duplex auto-negotiation mode
   full Set full duplex mode
   half Set half duplex mode

I'd make sure you're set for auto on both speed and duplex
 and
if that does not work I'd try to force the interface into a
setting that you know will work. "show interfaces" on your 7206
can show you the current settings.

 Take care,

 allan

Re: [Vyatta-users] Errors On Outgoing Ethernet Interface

2007-09-21 Thread Robyn Orosz
Hi Guys,

I just want to point out that there is currently an issue with the
statistical information displayed in the "Network In" / "Network Out"
section on the GUI. See Bugzilla:

https://bugzilla.vyatta.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2277

What seems to be happening is that if any type of errors were
encountered at any given time, the counter mechanism in the GUI that
reports on that specific error just keeps incrementing without end.
We're looking into this issue and will hopefully have it fixed soon.

So my point is, make sure that when you're viewing the WAN interface,
that the collision counter is actually incrementing. Keep refreshing
it. If it's not, you may not have a problem at all as the errors may
have just run up a bit when you first connected the cable.

You can also do a cat of '/proc/net/dev' which is what the "Network In"
/ "Network Out" section on the GUI is polling its information from.
Just keep running the cat over and over for a couple of minutes to
verify whether or not the collision counters are incrementing.

Thank you,

Robyn

On the 7206 the interfaces are FastEthernet interfaces

I did try each one from auto to force, etc and did not seem to make
 any difference

But I was not trying to much. Till I asked some pointers

Maybe its something I will have to have Timewarner match the
 switch to
my ethernet card, no idea for sure

 Hi Jeff,

I'd guess that you're having an issue with the auto
 negotiation
of speed and/or duplex on that interface. You can set these
 commands as follows:

vyatta # set interfaces ethernet eth0
 duplex ?
 Possible completions:
   autoSet duplex auto-negotiation mode
   full Set full duplex mode
   half Set half duplex mode

I'd make sure you're set for auto on both speed and duplex
 and
if that does not work I'd try to force the interface into a
setting that you know will work. "show interfaces" on your 7206
can show you the current settings.

 Take care,

 allan

I would rather use smoothwaal if you are looking for a router to install on a
hard drive. Easy installation minimum fuss
Burn iso and boot from cd
Otherwise download vyatta iso image, burn on cd and boot from cds. read all
relevant docs as well, configuration a beast

Re: [Vyatta-users] Errors On Outgoing Ethernet Interface

2007-09-21 Thread Aubrey Wells
This is true, but in a half-duplex environment, collisions dont'
cause much of a performance drop, as when one side detects a
collision, it will send a jamming signal to the other side so it will
shut up and traffic can continue. If one side is half and the other
is full, the jamming signal is ignored and the two will continue to
try to talk over each other and traffic creaps to a halt. A device
that is HD will clear the collision counter it generated every time a
frame is successfully transmitted after a jam signal is sent, so you
generally don't see collision counters on a HD device, if it is
working in accordance to the ethernet specs. That's CSMA/CDs nifty
little trick to keep you from panicking when you see your error
counters in a network that is supposed to have collisions (well, not
supposed to I guess, but *will* :-))

RTFM! O well, in this case Read The F* Community Wiki. It is all described
on the pages 'how to obtain source and how to keep up to date with the
source.

Good luck!
