It should not change anything on Windows, as it does not have Liberation Sans installed by default. However, it is not the case when someone uses LibreOffice. It installs Liberation Sans what results in Wikimedia pages being renders with this font. Windows has significant problems with rendering Liberation Sans (Linux does it fine). Just take a look on screenshots attached. Letters are smudged and blurry. Reading is tiring for the eye. I use default ClearType settings, without any custom tuning. Therefore, I would expect Liberation Sans not to being used on Windows, even when it is present in system. Unfortunately, it would mean serving css file dynamically, basing on useragent header. If a link to a page exists on the page itself, it currently is displayed as the
page title in bold text. The SelfLinkBegin hook (gerrit
I343e1b1b08ec841d22a1b22bcb8af43bb65a5a50) allows extensions to modify the text
that is displayed. This new functionality is desirable in the SemanticTitle
extension. The SemanticTitle extension enables the display semantic property on
a page as a user-friendly page title instead of the actual page title. The use
of the SelfLinkBegin hook can be seen in SemanticTitle in gerrit
I593f263723498aa28ff945c4094f27d817c1ad27.
As an example of how you can test this feature, install Semantic MediaWiki and
SemanticTitle and set
$wgSemanticTitleProperties = array(
NS_MAIN = Title
);
Create a property page named Property:Title containing [[Has type::Text]].
Create a test page in the main namespace containing the text:
{{#set:Title=Semantic Title}}
[[{{FULLPAGENAME}}]].
Currently, the page will display the title of the test page in bold. With the
two patches above applied, the page will display the text Semantic Title in
bold.
While this example is very simplistic, a more complex example where this is
necessary is a page that includes a Semantic MediaWiki #ask query that has a
link to the current page in the query results. Consider a page for an author
that lists citations to all of the author's works as a result of a query. Each
citation would include the list of authors, including co-authors, as links to
their author pages. Using SemanticTitle, each author page can exist with a
title of the form Author:xx in the Author namespace, where xx is a
unique number, with the page title displayed as the author's name using a
property on the page. However, in the citation list, the link to the author in
question would be displayed as the bold text Author:xx, where xx is the
unique number for the current author page, rather than the author's name.

Now they provide font-family: Helvetica Neue,Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif. In my case it results in Arial on Windows 7 (instead Liberation Sans, see bug 63591) and Nimbus Sans L on Ubuntu 12.04 (instead Liberation Sans too). I dropped them on enwiki as we'd had many reports that the font rendering was just broken and I was able to confirm there were problems with both Arimo and Liberation Sans and thus unreadable thus going against the whole ides of providing free knowledge. But if the MathJax option has never been enabled by default, there are good reasons (e.g. performance just to mention one of them). So Moritz has done an awesome work to implement server-side conversion, improves the texvc situation and more. Unfortunately, this is a big and complicate change and review has been slow. The goal is to have the traditional inline mode / display mode that we find in math documents and the default/current MediaWiki rendering inline displaystyle. This handles whether the equation is centered or not and whether the displaystyle is used or not. Moritz has done several versions and branches to try to get the patch accepted and things may have been broken in the battle. Again, I don't think anyone blamed you. As it stands, the only way to address the issue is to recreate the page in question, and then delete it. Brian: we definitely won't consider this bug resolved until we've fixed the problem on all Wikimedia wikis by properly changing core's Vector LESS styles. We tested and implemented local fixes on Beta Labs and English Wikipedia since it was a Friday and we wanted to get user feedback quickly via the Village Pumps etc. Jon will be putting a real patch in place and we have coordinated with the [[wikitech:SWAT deploys]] team to shoot for Monday. Bartosz: yes, for now removing Arimo and Liberation Sans is fixing the problem for XP and Windows 7 users. In the future we need to take a second look at see if there is any freely-licensed font that will render well for users without subpixel rendering.
