My '85 300SD has the 617 engine, right? I don't believe there is any
theoretical limit to its longevity.

Oil cooler issues have never arisen in either my E250 or GLK 250. This is
only a problem in the 6 cylinder models, e.g. ML 350 Bluetec..

I agree, an older mechanical diesel is still desirable but the newer ones with
DEF and emissions crap and computers required to run them I would avoid. They
are really only suitable for drivers who need to make frequent long highway
trips. If you're driving infrequently and/or on mostly short
That and the highly unlikely possibility that diesel fuel cost will ever
remotely be equal to or lower than gasoline? I mean, if you’re driving a GTI
with a 5-speed stick, OK, I get it, but for the average driver and vehicle,
economy is no longer a significant issue.

The gassers of those years eat up timing chains and balance shafts. I guess
pick your poison.

Or simply stick with a gasser.
I mean really is there the old school advantages to having a diesel any more,
especially it you look at things like oil cooler seals and DEF crapola?

Forgot to mention, stick to pre 2009 e class or pre 2008 ML/GL to avoid DEF.

They are fine, but be prepared to deal with oil cooler seals or pay someone,
I’m in the middle of my 2nd one as well speak.

Facelift model?
Be careful about trailer hitches on 2006 and later MBs. They will typically
require some serious modifications to add one if it can even be done. In other
words, if you want a car with a trailer hitch, unless it’s a W163 (98-05 MLs),
make sure it’s already got one.

Get a 2014-15 if you can. That was a mid-model makeover. Very nicely
improved.

Steer clear?
I watched a video from Hoovie’s friend, The Wizard. He maintains, that among
Mercedes SUVs, your best choice it’s a 2012 ML 350.
