I wandered around in Martin & Faribault Counties this afternoon and wasn't
finding much for waterfowl either in the air or on the ground. I finally
got lucky around 4:30-5:00pm and spotted a large flock of Greater
White-fronted Geese with some Snow Geese flying into the Walnut Lake WMA

At 7:20 PM I went to the Yohi State Wildlife Management Area a couple miles to
the east of the city of Kandiyohi in Kandiyohi County to look for migrating
owls. I
found something just as good when I managed to discover a Spotted Towhee. I
snapped a couple photos but lost track of the bird whi

height towards the north. Quite possibly the woodcock took wing somewhere

Hunting a small patch of bare ground...Not a bog for miles around.
The bizarre thing is that my son and I saw one in this stretch last April.

This afternoon there were 2 raptors about 1000-1500 ft north of the beach
in trees on the MN side near the river's edge. They were large. Their
wings appeared to be a mottled brown with dark brown or black as it got
toward the outer edge. Their underneath was very light in color but with

We were in western LQP county over the weekend to open our farm house at
Prairie Marsh Farm.
On Friday there was 2 inches of snow on the ground with little open water
except creeks and some flooded fields. There were numerous large flocks of

Karl Bardon and Jane had over 800 along the North Shore a few days ago. Ice
could blow back in tomorrow and Friday.

I found 2 female Spruce Grouse along Beatty Road and County Road 24, just
north of Cook. They were picking grit on the side of the road. I wonder if
the males are displaying yet? I might have to take a walk in the bog this
weekend - the snow is about 2-3 feet deep, but it might have a good crust

Spotted an adult female hunting along Polk Co 20. Totally white and huge.
I thought for sure she was going to get hit by a truck as she flew low,
towards the shoulder of the road. She stopped short of the truck and
grabbed a rodent (feeding on grasses and grains exposed by yesterday's snow
plows)
Western Meadowlark on Co. Rd 13 north of Audubon, MN. It was only 11 degrees
