I have verified ironic-conductor ipmitool commands behaviour with the
above PPA in #2 (On focal ussuri)
With configuration use_ipmitool_retries = False, ironic-conductor runs below
command until 60 seconds timeout expiry.

Thanks for looking so quickly. I'm almost certain the problem will go
away without the nvidia driver because the nouveau driver didn't
recognise the hardware when I booted off the USB installer, so reverse
prime won't work and there will be no external monitor, which is a
completely new problem.

It's mostly the background that strobes; the windows themselves are
somewhat usable/readable - caja is shown here and were it not for the
flashing of wallpap
You'll note the lower display has a mess of windows..
What the picture does not show is that the whole screen is
flashing/strobe like; it appears a messy-clear image on the picture; but
the image is not actually static but flashing...
