But it got me thinking. There are a number of spots on the web where we
can here old school wizard tapes (well, not that many, but you know what
I'm talking about), and there are places like Groovetech that has an
archive so to speak of the first DEMF.

Is there an archive of Detroit techno? Or even dance music broadly
 considered?

http://deephousepage.com does the trick for Chicago, and all things deep
house (you can find a good deal of Ron Hardy, some Theo Parrish, some other
Detroit folks here there and the aforementioned Wizard mix there).
However, no such place exists for techno to my knowledge. http://paxahau.com
has some more recent stuff covered, which is good, but historically speaking
I've never seen it or seen it mentioned on this list. I suspect this is
because the base of the deephouse page was constructed around WBMX, the Oak
Park radio station that used to feature the Hot Mix 5. The deep house page
used to be explicitly focused on WBMX. I suppose there could be some people
with old T-1000 and Mojo mixes around though - and there were other Detroit
radio shows back then too, right? That would seem to me to be the place to
start. Besides all of that there's an absurd number of legal issues about
clearing the mix with the radio station, club, DJ, artists, etc if you want
to be legit about it. I'm not sure how deephousepage gets around this. I
know I've seen mixes pulled from their site, which indicates to me they fly
by the seat of the pants with it. I'd be happy to help in any way I can if
you can actually get this off the ground. It would be such a valuable
project!

I just did a web-search for the middle passage slave on google.com and
came up with a heap of sites.

Last year I read a book which mentioned it. It's called Flash for Freedom!
by George MacDonald Fraser, an historical novel about the Atlantic slave
trade in the mid-19th c before the Civil War. It's a great read (very
addictive) and there are notes at the back with references to proper
historical texts for further info.

I dug it out and found this:

note 30. 'Slaves certainly were thrown overboard on the approach of patrol
vessels (see the case of the _Regulo_ which drowned over 200 in the Bight of
Biafra, and the reported case of the clipper captain who was said to have
murdered over 500 by dropping them with his anchor chain, both quoted in
The Shameful Trade by George Kay)'.

happy reading,

Chris

[313] Recommendations: Fischerspooner, Gigolo 5, Varley

2001-05-18 Thread Tom Robbins
Just have to jump in to recommend the forthcoming Fischerspooner album,
'Best Album Ever' on Gigolo - brilliant retro electropop and a must for fans
of Adult (who, coincidentally, have remixed their 'Emerge' single). In fact,
Gigolo seem to have pretty much cornered the market in this style of punkish
retro electro-pop, as shown by the new Gigolo CD Five collection, with acts
like Tuxedomoon, Miss Kittin The Hacker, Terrence Fixmer, Dopplereffekt
and Steril. The comp also includes the brilliant 'Flash' by Orlando Voorn, a
new track from 3 Phase, a cut from Chicago's DJ Traxx and two Japanese
Telecom tracks.

Finally, given the recent discussion of Gez Varley (G-Man), his new 'Bayou
Paradis' album on Force Inc is a must for fans of the classic Detroit style
of cosmic, dreamy techno, the kind of thing Delsin are doing so well these
days.

Cheers,
TOM

[313] Depeche Back In Mode/Fatboy Gets The Boot(y)

2001-05-18 Thread Cyclone Wehner
I think Depeche Mode are almost universally loved in techno circles - 313
included. Along with Kraftwerk they come up most often as influences. I just
wondered what the vibe was on their new album, Exciter. I really like the
more fragile tracks, Freelove and Breathe, but am not feeling the
alt/country/blues single Dream On or industrial The Dead Of Night, just as
those are not my fave styles.

I have heard comeback albums by The Orb, Orbital, Stereo MCs, et al this
year and felt nothing for them (never appealed to me anyway) - it's funny
for me Depeche Mode have managed to endure and have an edge.

Also, Fatboy Slim (I know, I know) has released a single that is supposed to
represent his take on 'ghetto booty' - Star 69. It sounds more like trancey
techno to my ears. Anyway there is a DJ Godfather mix - DJ Godfather Detroit
Getto Tek Remix - curiously enough.

The inner sleeve notes in Drexciya's The Quest comp has something about
this. It talks exactly about slaves being thrown overboard and how mutation
of human beings into amphibian beings should be possible.

2001-05-18 Thread diana potts

Hello (again).

Just as an FYI, if you turn your browser to
http://www.electronicmusicfest.com/schedule/

you'll notice there's been a considerable change in
the schedule, artist additions etc. Some things...

1.Derrick May is closing the fest WHILE Doc Martin is
at an adjacent stage.

2.I'll meet you at the Bacardi Stage after I check out
what's going on at the Miller Genuine Draft Stage.

3.De La Soul is still only performing for an hour,
that gives enough time for shouts outs and perhaps two
songs??

4.Kooky Scientist, Delano Smith and Kirk Degiorgio are
playing at the same time. NOT FAIR.

5.Prefuse 73 has been added to the line up. YES YES
YES YES YES

I have my own thoughts on why these changes are
happening now, but I'll leave it to you

will try to get that information as well.

On a side note, did any NYC 313ers go see Derrick at Centro Fly last night?

for sure - she's definitely cashing in now, she should pay the quality
artists and djs more than their contracted amount for being part of detroit
commercial fest 2001. i'm sure when the organization for DEMF 2001 began
the performers didn't anticipate such corporate sponsership.

what will we see next - Juan, Derrick, and Kevin making a long distance call

I guess we know now, why Carl was relieved of duties BEFORE the event. So
that whomever, could have control of extra money at the last chance. I'll
bet Bacardi and miller came to carol marvin and told her they would pay her
x amount of dollars, and Carl said no way, thus leading to situation we
have...

Re: [313] IND-X Records

2001-05-18 Thread Lucas Smith
I've actually got two records:

First one Halogen (INDX002a)
A1. Nyquist
B1. Bliss
B2. Bliss (Sky mix)

Written and produced by Zach Roberts

The other is a white label called Nectar.. I enjoy both immensely Nyquist
is an an amazing acid track.

Someone wanted some info on IND-X Records... so here's the bit I have to
 offer:

Ind-x was (is?) a Detroit-area based label run by Zach Roberts. I don't
think too much was ever put out on the label. I've got one record on IND-X
by the Electric Company, which Zach was a part of.

Here's the info on the record:

 Catalog #: INDX006A
 The Electric Company:
 Electronique
 B1: Zach's Soniq Toniq
 B2: Original
 A1: Rob's Disputed Mix
 A2: Ed's Chiquita in O-Town Mix

Written by Rob Leonarduzz, Zach Roberts, and Eddie Watson
 1995

worked out a couple of times. so i can help you there. i can also help you

classified locations are. like the space i work in. it has to have someone
in it 24hours a day. when it is my turn to be in here we can bring her in.
i know lots of torture methods that will get info out of people. i just
need some babboo chutes, salt, lemon juice, razor blades, nipple clamps, a
dildo (trust me i won't use this on myself), and all the women that
participated in the pregnant bikini contest last weekend out here in San
Diego. I will also need a vocoder to disguise my voice, since all women
will be able to recognize my voice after they hear it. it is so deep and
sexy. almost like barry white, but enough about myself...

ok here's what we do...well...it would be better if we
had some extra time to set this up, but time is of the
 essence, first...we're gonna need a monkey...I know,
monkey are cliche...but this is neccesary...ok, so we
train the monkey over the next two weeks to be able to
pretend to be Carol Marvin...then when the time of the
demf nears we get a crack force of geeky techno
 guys...i know...we're stretching a little bit
here...but -some- of us have to spend some time
outside, play basketbal or something, I'll need a show
of hands of people who have seen the sun and broken a
sweat because of moving in the last 6 months, we'll
use those guys to make the team...anyway. so we kidnap
Carol Marvin with our awesome team of geeky techno
guys and replace her with the monkey, I'm sure since
we're so close to the DEMF no one will notice,
hopefully the looking for lice in peoples hair will be
attributed to stress...so the carol monkey will give
said speeches which will consist of ook ook and eek
eek and hopefully some poop throwing...that would be
a plus, this will hopefully do some damage to her
reputationso we take Carol back to our secret
 base...uh, any volunteers for a secret base?...and
make her watch Brady Bunch reruns and The Sound of
Music over and over again with the sound up loud while
playing Britney Spears oops...I did it again at the
same time, this coupled with Ubersamalian(did I get
that right) smith lip synching the whole time in
nothing but a g-string and some of those little nipple
tassles...these actions should in no time at all get
her to concede to our demands...what do you guys
think? I've put a lot of time into this idea...

Speaking of Bacardi, I guess I didn't drink, or I don't recollect, but
what was the alcohol like at last years festival? Was there none at all?
Seems to me like that would be a major reason why there weren't any
incidents at last year's fest. I can't wait for drunk frat boys to be
spilling their beer on me and cursing autechre hey you homos, where's the
steady beat? or yelling at Juan Atkins to spin some skynrd man!!!

[313] FW: Angry?...you should be

Subject: Angry?...you should be

You are receiving this email because your name was given as a respected
member of the music or art community in Detroit and abroad.

The attempted dismissal of the Detroit Electronic Music Festival [DEMF]
creative Director, Carl Craig by Festival producer, Carol Marvin/Pop Culture
Media has been a matter of great concern for those of us involved in the
Detroit Electronic Music Community. This firing is untimely, unwarranted and
down right malicious.

For years, Detroit’s world-famous music has remained virtually unknown in
its own hometown. Due to the creative vision of Mr. Carl Craig, all of that
changed last year. The massive success of the DEMF brought the attention
back to Detroit and Detroit’s music was heard around the World!!

http://www.detroitnews.com/2001/entertainment/0105/16/a01-224860.htm
http://www.metrotimes.com/editorial/story.asp?id=1808

This “take-over” by Pop Culture Media will destroy what so many people have
worked so hard to create and support.

This is just history repeating itselfartists have always been at the
forefront of society, moving us in to the future...it is only a matter of
timegreedy big business steals what we’ve created. As artists,
musicians, media and record industry people, we must stand up voice our
opinions. We strongly urge you to take a few moments to write your thoughts
and direct them to the people that NEED to know.

Feel free to paraphrase from this letter, or draft another, but let your
voice be heard!! Also, forward this letter to like-minded individuals who
care about this matter as much as you do.

There was beer, but you could only get one at a time, and the line was
about an hour long sometimes so it wasn't worth it. They stopped selling at

Speaking of Bacardi, I guess I didn't drink, or I don't recollect, but
what was the alcohol like at last years festival? Was there none at all?
Seems to me like that would be a major reason why there weren't any
incidents at last year's fest. I can't wait for drunk frat boys to be
spilling their beer on me and cursing autechre hey you homos, where's the
steady beat? or yelling at Juan Atkins to spin some skynrd man!!!

someone

in it 24hours a day. when it is my turn to be in here we can bring her in.
i know lots of torture methods that will get info out of people. i just
need some babboo chutes, salt, lemon juice, razor blades, nipple clamps, a
dildo (trust me i won't use this on myself), and all the women that
participated in the pregnant bikini contest last weekend out here in San
