For those of you who wanna know, some insight: Blaze : 25 years later / 1992/Motown Track listing Street Corner Get Up The Prayer So Special The Fight Miss My Love You Don't Really Love Me Street Walker Any Thing For Yo The Dream We All Must Live Tog The Window I Wonder The Bombing Gonna Make It Work Confessions All That I Should Missing You The Acceptance Lover Man The Cab Love Is Forever Broad Market NWK The Conclusion The Hope Song The album didn't sell, because was included in their contrat no promo- no marketing, artists will, that lead to one member of the group Chris Herbert leaving ( he was not agree on the strategy of Kevin and Josh)! From the horse's mouth of Timmy (a Dj resident at Shelter) don't know if it's true or not but Timmy knows Kevin for sure, as Kevin is the boss of Shelter , I know also that some so called well known journalits :-) have tried for ages to interview them, no chance... ..All in all for what I heard Blaze are now in the process of deciding to enter into the field of becoming a music distribution company, where they will give music producers of today a better deal as regards to promotion, publishing rights and their own record label. But we'll have to wait but another issue for them in New-York is MAW...! they got their mafia, clique there too :-)..! And the nightmare still goes on...! do you know that ? remixes of their songs are starting to multiply. Last year we had Farley and Heller via the group called Fire Island, UK remixed and revamp an old classic their's called If I should need a friend. Another old classic of their's is Moonwalk which has been given the same treatment by the group called Nuphonic. And finally we saw the Deep Dish Boys take the original Blaze song Hideaway and made it into probably the biggest dance (garage ?) track of last year ! |-Original Message- |From: laura gavoor [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] |Sent: Saturday, March 02, 2002 8:49 PM |To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; 313@hyperreal.org |Subject: [313] Post-disco major label artists | | |That's too bad about Motown, cuz Blaze is a totally mass marketable |commodity IMO. Re: [313] UR Inspiration
I think the sound quality on the clip may be average, therefore you won't hear all of the elements clearly.. I really doubt there going to record the clip in high quality sound, it's a teaser... People need to keep in mind you only hear about 15-20 seconds of the song... and I like what I've heard so far... ~Erin yussel: I'm hoping its just the poor audio quality, but it really just sounds simple to me. I thought the strigs were obvious, and I eagerly awaited a good hook when the beat came in, and it just wasn't there. Like I said, I have a feeling it might just be the poor quality. But based on what I heard (what else could I base it on), I'd probably leave it alone. it doesn't do anything for you? that's cool, each to their own innit. as you say it is a short clip with fairly average sound quality. simple, obvious... yeah, maybe... but i prefer to think of those elements as clean, classic UR. you think there's no hook, i disagree. even from the clip, it sounds like *such* an uplifting track. i can't wait to get my mits on a copy. things have seemed so flat lately... a new UR record, and a good one at that, is just what's needed! :) rob _ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [313] Regarding Business
no no no correction: this was not written for the use against any one of the originators and artists from Detroit as Mr Atkins, I was not saying that, no way, - Juan Atkins is the father of this music. He created this. - His Music is absolutely oustanding His label is one of the best labels in the scene and it´s not 15 years ago what the hell are you talking bout ? When he want´s to move to another level and he is scanning the justice of the music-industry by experience, by having created the ground for a scene before - it´s something completly different to what my statement was about. it was about the robot-kind-of-business-men-philosophy, ONLY being about business, as I was responding to the communication between Otto and Big Loada and that was about a different state of mind. I was answering to the statement - business first and music second - and yes giving special props to them staying independent cauze it´s a long way to go and some failed before reaching the goal and don´t deny that and what that can mean, how hard this can be. it is about surviving too - Mr Juan Atkins is a part of the scene whatever he also is fighting for now and whereever he is living this is his life and only because he is talking about business aspects and is involved with bigger business that doesn´t mean it´s his main subject - his quotes make sense to me (as far as the xlr8r interview for example was correct) and people can learn from it. That doesn´t proove them wrong, taking another route. Some things he is explaining seem to proove them but all people of the scene who made this happen, because they were about music first and then the business they deserve my full respect and get it. who am I to say anything else ? so don´t use my words for your own moral concept when your going to judge prooved outstanding artists I was not talking about this point of view though I will not reject your opinion for yourself but don´t play the artists against each other because I think there are other really shady people already calculating with this for some business, some big events ... yeah, i think a lot of people are forgetting that there are plenty of newer artist who do better with each release. just because juan or any of the old guard are having problems doesn't mean that al is lost. you shouldn't judge the strength of the scene by the career of the guys who did it fifteen years ago. RE: [313] Post-disco major label artists
Some other interesting titbits about Blaze ... An outfit called Phase II in the late 80s/early 90s, had substantially the same members - some of you might remember: 'It's A Mystery': Love is the question that goes thru my mind, you have the answers I may never find A less beaty, more paradise-garagey version appeared on a compilation called 'Paradise Regained' which I think came out in 1988 (?) on Republic records, in collaboration with Dave Lee (who one could say is a well-known 'Brit Fad freak', but I wouldn't dream of it ;o). The rest of the tracks were mostly by Blaze under different names. I can post details Weds. Josh Milan and Kevin Hedge worked with the Pet Shop Boys on their 'Introspective' Mini-album released in 1988. Josh Milan played keyboards on 'I Want A Dog'; I think both provided 'additional production'. I've come across the names Hedge, Milan, Herbert so often on 'anonymous' disco-house records from the early '90s, I've almost stopped noticing. The '25 years Later' LP therefore was a very big revelation and it still puzzles me how so much lyrical, musical and conceptual talent is still so hidden, 14 years later. We Almost Lost Detroit was ostensibly about the 1966 accident at the Fermi experimental nuclear reactor in Monroe County. Of course, you could also interpret it to mean something about other events of the time. Gil Scott-Heron's father, Giles, was from Jamaica originally and was a renowed football (er, soccer) player in Canada, the US and the UK. He played for the Detroit Corinthians in the early 1950s. Sadly, Gil himself was sentenced to a serious jail term after not sticking with a rehab agreement last November. Not surprisingly, this all started with a bust on sus as they say in the UK. Whatever else you can say about jail, it's not a place to get well, but that is where the judge felt he had to go, and maybe that was the least bad of several very serious alternatives. All I can say is it's a blessing to this tired old world to have someone of his talent still going, and let's hope we see him soon, better and happier and more ready to raise his voice again. You can tell from his interviews that he's still alert and as free a thinker as ever. http://football.guardian.co.uk/News_Story/0,1563,357680,00.html http://www.villagevoice.com/issues/0129/gray.php http://www.guardian.co.uk/arts/story/0,3604,593501,00.html http://www.canongate.net/payback/pbp.taf?_n=4 - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [313] Alcohol-free / Hawtin review...
it's funny isn't it but i suspect a booze-less club over here would immediately arouse the suspicions of the authorities... a cultural difference i guess Ohh but they do... one of the drawbacks of going to DT's Friday night party, and there are quite few these days unfortunately, is that there are always a few undercover cops cruising around trying to spot dealers. Not to mention the paranoid bouncers who routinely throw innocent people out because they were thought to be doing some sort of drug. Any club with no booze is automatically suspected of heavy drug 'infiltration'and those suspicions are generally spot on, for better or worse. Honestly I'd rather be in a club where people (not candi-ravers;) are on e than a club rammed with drunks. I went to the Tronic party at Baktun tonight and danced to Richie Hawtin, Magda, and Miss Honey Dijon until 4AM...only problem was the number of idiots from parts unknown who got pissed, sweaty, jumped around at what they perceived to be an appropriate moment, SLAMMED into unsuspecting punters constantly AND stepped on people's feet whilst they were dancing. I just got finished cleaning my Nikes and am decidedly in an anti-booze mood just now;-) I am a drinker, but being totally inconsiderate of one's fellow revelers is never cool imho. Laters, m* btw...first hour of Hawtin's set kinda bored me but the second got a little housier and more interesting. Magda rocked it as usual! Honey really surprised me and played really hard, impressive. Re: [313] The Great White Hype...was IT'S ABOUT TIME!!!
France was only hauled out of musical obscurity in the 90's thru UK label managers and the music press 'discovering' Daft Punk et al, Garnier is known because he played the Hacienda, otherwise they were never supported in their home country. Jacques Lu Cont of Les Rythmes Digitales is actually English - and rode on the crest of this french touch mania in England. Paradoxically UK techno DJs and producers tend to be passed over in the UK in favour of international players and are appreciated more in mainstream Europe. -- Date: Mon, 04 Mar 2002 13:37:30 -0500 To: 313@hyperreal.org From: glyph1001 [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [313] The Great White Hype...was IT'S ABOUT TIME!!! Re: [313] Regarding Business
easy there... I think i'm still refering back to the original statements that started this entire thread of discussion last week. your comments simply prompted some new ideas of my own. i personally respect juan as well. at least, i respect the stuff he did. and the vast majority of that stuff was between 85-90 (approx: 15 years). Nor do I disrespect him now. although i'll admit to have a hard time 'respecting' someone with the questionable work ethic (missing gigs) and questionable other ethics (demf commitee), but none of this is the point of the arguement. All I'm trying to address is the fact that this entire debate (and all the threads that started with Laura's original tirade) have almost exclusivly addressed older artist (Juan Atkins, Lil Louis...)and what 'could' have been. There are plenty of good underground artist who have had prosperous and creative careers since the first wave hit its peak. A great example would be Felix Da Housecat. Here's a guy who released his first record (Phantasy Girl) in 1987. His carer went up and down, and he is just now 'breaking-out' with his current record. And he's doing it on an indie label 'Emperor Norton' The point is, there are ways for artist to prosper, parallel to the same industry that supports 'mainstream' acts like Sasha and Digweed (who still aren't that mainstream- my dave matthews listening brother has never heard of them) that is all. On Tue, 5 Mar 2002, neon tse tse wrote: no no no correction: this was not written for the use against any one of the originators and artists from Detroit as Mr Atkins, I was not saying that, no way, - Juan Atkins is the father of this music. He created this. - His Music is absolutely oustanding His label is one of the best labels in the scene and it?s not 15 years ago what the hell are you talking bout ? When he want?s to move to another level and he is scanning the justice of the music-industry by experience, by having created the ground for a scene before - it?s something completly different to what my statement was about. it was about the robot-kind-of-business-men-philosophy, ONLY being about business, as I was responding to the communication between Otto and Big Loada and that was about a different state of mind. I was answering to the statement - business first and music second - and yes giving special props to them staying independent cauze it?s a long way to go and some failed before reaching the goal and don?t deny that and what that can mean, how hard this can be. it is about surviving too - Mr Juan Atkins is a part of the scene whatever he also is fighting for now and whereever he is living this is his life and only because he is talking about business aspects and is involved with bigger business that doesn?t mean it?s his main subject - his quotes make sense to me (as far as the xlr8r interview for example was correct) and people can learn from it. That doesn?t proove them wrong, taking another route. Some things he is explaining seem to proove them but all people of the scene who made this happen, because they were about music first and then the business they deserve my full respect and get it. who am I to say anything else ? so don?t use my words for your own moral concept when your going to judge prooved outstanding artists I was not talking about this point of view though I will not reject your opinion for yourself but don?t play the artists against each other because I think there are other really shady people already calculating with this for some business, some big events ... yeah, i think a lot of people are forgetting that there are plenty of newer artist who do better with each release. just because juan or any of the old guard are having problems doesn't mean that al is lost. you shouldn't judge the strength of the scene by the career of the guys who did it fifteen years ago. Look at the people wo are doing it now. On Mon, 4 Mar 2002, Neontsetse wrote: The fact that they don't do it for techno... *shrug*... Their loss. It gives us the chance to do it our way. [313] Mills Peel - the dirty truth revealed on UK TV
Anybody in the UK see 'Room 101' on BBC2 last night? For those that don't know it, the show is all about well-known people talking about their pet hates in an effort to persuade the presenter (Paul Merton) to consign them to oblivion in the imaginary Room 101. Anyway, last night John Peel was the guest celebrity and at one stage he was talking about - and I forget why - beards. What he said went something like this (from memory): Usually I look much better with a beard, but there's a terrible photo of me, which I think I have the only copy of, fortunately. You see, there's a wonderful DJ called Jeff Mills and last year I was at a festival in Barcelona - Sonar, it's called, a dance music thing - and I had my photo taken with my arm round Jeff's shoulders. He's quite a short man, you see. But I'd had a few drinks and somehow my beard looked so dishevelled that in the photo I look like some kind of sex tourist with my arm round my latest 'find'. I look like I'm about to say something like 'Look at the little poppet I picked up!' Thought some people might be interested in this, if they haven't already heard... (In a pathetic, desperate effort to keep on topic, did Leftfield ever get remixed by any 313 artists? I can't think of any meself.) Sent: Monday, March 04, 2002 4:55 PM Subject: Leftfield RIP For Immediate Release LEFTFIELD R.I.P After 12 years of sonic experimentation, Paul Daley Neil Barnes have decided to pull the plug on Leftfield. Both parties will be pursuing solo projects so Leftfield fans should not be down hearted. This should be seen as a new beginning in an on going process. The platinum selling duo have been responsible for re-defining dance music, as well as producing and remixing artistes from John Lydon to Roots Manuva to David Bowie. They have decided to end the partnership amicably after they felt it could not be taken any further. Formed in 1990 with the release of the seminal 'Not Forgotten' single, Leftfield's career is a list of formidable achievements. The famous duet with John Lydon on 'Open Up' caught the mood of the nation and the impact of their debut 'Leftism' album, released in January 1995, was seismic. It is still referred to as the greatest dance album of all time. Their platinum selling follow-up 'Rhythm And Stealth' debuted at number one and featured the mighty 'Phat Planet' single. Their live show with its famous sound system helped to redefine the role of live dance music and after gigs throughout Europe, they are still officially the loudest band ever to play Brixton Academy. The remix work in the early party of their career and the success of their own Hard Hands label should also be keenly remembered. Leftfield. Gone but not forgotten. Paul Daley - Thanks to everyone from fans to promoters to DJ's and to listeners who have supported us over the years. THIS IS NOT THE END! Neil Barnes - Leftfield was always about pushing the boundries of sound as far as we could. I'm pround to be a part of this. I mean he was counting the Ford ad where they use his music as a recent accomplishment, an ad company using his music isn't something he did as recent. They referred to him playing at the DEMF, that was rained just into his set, he was only up there a bit. I think he needs to get his head out of his ass. There are soo many better Detroit DJ's that are actually working their sets, and pushing new sounds, but it's hard to get any where out of Detroit when you have these leaches sucking the life blood out of the Detroit name. Internationally they think that's the Detroit, when it's funny we really don't listen to them all that much here. Mr. pouvrenoir better check his stats ... and his attitude. To review: I mean we read this article where Juan was bitching that he took like 2,000 a show and Oakenfold took 1 million for the tour, and how that he's white=rascism=trance whatever. Obviously Juan has to get a new booking agent or realize if you don't do anything musically for almost a decade, that people won't know you across the country, and 2,000 is a lot to play records in that case. Let's review the actual FACTS: Jazz Is The Teacher/Cosmic Courier/Bassmental 1993 Sonic Sunset/I Wanna Be There 1994 I See the Light/Pick Up the Flow 1995 Techno City 95 1995 Game One/Think Quick 1995 Higher 1996 Skynet 1998 Never Tempt Me 1999 Be Brave 1999 And the Deep Space album (1995), one of my five or six favorite ones of the decade (along with Orbital's brown album, Mr. Onester's African Dream, etc.) Juan Atkins started a revolution in the 1980s. OK, that's not enough for you? His track record in the 1990s is damn good. Or maybe Cosmic Courier and Game One didn't rock the house worldwide, that was just my imagination I guess.. Finally, his just a bit at DEMF last year was almost all his scheduled time. It was probably the most atmospheric moment I can remember -- do you all remember the color of the sky and the lightning while he played? And it was a good set too. I wish people would get off Juan's case. But I guess I'm asking too much, right? Disgusted, phred - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I fowarded that message because the person who wrote it asked me to (please read the end of said message) Mind Body? Please! I have a copy sitting right here. Its a decent album. I'm certain I gave it props in a previous post. And it barely sold any copies, nor did it have any impact on underground music. As for later Metroplex releases: I fucking love 'down' (look for the aaron carl piece I wrote in urb's next 100, coming in may) What the fuck does that have to do with juan, except that his label released it. that's the same as giving derrick may credit for aril brikha. that's bullshit! give aaron carl the credit, not juan the fact is, the stuff that ppl are refering to when they refer to Juan Atkins 'the legend' is his early Model 500 shit that was produced 'approx' 15 years ago. jeez, i can't believe that is so hard to figure out!!! Also: Body Oil (as Infinit) - 1999 Mind and Body (as Model 500) - 1999 Never Tempt Me (as Infitini) - 1999 I could go on and on... Just don't have the time to list all of the aliases and remixes he's done in the past 5 years alone. I haven't seen Juan spin since 420 in Cleveland which must have been 95 or 96 and before that the Metroplex 10th Anniversary party - but each of those times he has played incredible sets. Each of his 3 sets at the Metroplex party in 95 was unbelievable - he played one house, one techno and one jungle. So to summarize I don't think anyone has any right to talk about Juan as a DJ and definitely not as a producer. Once you do half of the stuff he's done then you come back and you can talk shit. Jazz Is The Teacher/Cosmic Courier/Bassmental 1993 Sonic Sunset/I Wanna Be There 1994 I See the Light/Pick Up the Flow 1995 Techno City 95 1995 Game One/Think Quick 1995 Higher 1996 Skynet 1998 Never Tempt Me 1999 Be Brave 1999 And the Deep Space album (1995), one of my five or six favorite ones of the decade (along with Orbital's brown album, Mr. Onester's African Dream, etc.) Juan Atkins started a revolution in the 1980s. Re: [313] Regarding Business
More appropriately a study of the RECURRING and cyclical pattern of de-evolution and propaganda with regard to Black American artists. The past is over and can never be repeatedor can it..?? What has been discussed has been due to the fact THAT THERE ARE NO black American DANCE artists of any number nowadays, sporting the same opportune major label distribution or recognition as their white counterparts...of whatever aspect of dance music they represent. If they are producing electronically driven dance music, are known and American...chances are they've got a pretty good situation with a major American label. What came before has set today's climate in this industry. There are NO BLACK Rock n'Roll artists today...FOR A VERY GOOD REASON. They were eliminated from the playing field a long time ago,but once upon a time the music was THEIRS alone born and bred. No one could tell me that all Black American rock n' roll musicians/bands...just disappeared. There are probably still black rock bands trying to get signed that will NEVER be afforded the opportunity in today's America. Why?? Because they aren't smart enough or talented enough? Please someone factually contradict this phenome with even the smallest exampleAlan? The game is old...competition...dirty pool...whatever you wish to call itbut it/the past solidly outlines what is to come--if we let it. Okay, Carl Craig's with Caroline...King Britt has made it to radio...anybody else??? Anybody? Kool Keith??? He's frustrated as hell and gits no marketing support (or radio play) from his label and therefore will remain right where he is. Who else? Let's update this to present day and back up our discussion/argument with facts. My tirade was in response to lack of respect for those 313 trail-blazing artists, business peeps, record store owners and promoters that came before affording a way for the young and inexperienced types on this list to presume expertise about garnering success in this country. Most of you have no clue of what these artists/peeps have gone through or what they are faced with TODAY in order to sell product. I'll wager that, just within the dance music arena, that there are even LESS black artists with major label deals/ties TODAY then there were back in the dusty (according to Josh) days of Juan Atkins/Lil Louis. Just within electronic dance musics' major categories (House, Techno, Dn'B...) Let's keep this mainstream american labels/mainstream subs only, K? How is this relevant to the so-called underground?...again microcosm to the macroeconomics of the entertainment industry at large in this country. If artists like Blaze, (is this recent enuff?) once signed to Motown failed at getting exposure and radio play for their product even while housed in a majorwhat chance, then, do the independents have to facilitate/develop market base or penetration to sell their product to potential fans in America? Whether you accept this or not...that is their goal--SALES and market penetration...not just ot be coolly exclusive for y'all to selfishly consume. Answering that, begs further questioning...do some of you presume that their product WOULDN'T be taken to or enjoyed by said potential audience? Cuz the success that we independents have garnered (as well as this thread) have proven that a fallacy. Independent (mostly public and college) radio actively play our products which gives a little hope and exposure for new sales/market penetration. But again, opportunities afforded us are the result of 20 or 30 TIMES the work of our counter-parts and non-ethnic competition. Roll callfor dance music artists either signed to or with major label distributioneveryone submit/post those that you know. While I have preference for good music of any color..I'm rather certain this discussion will still break out skewed in favor of non-ethnic (politically correct enuff?) artists, both good..mostly bad, based in this country. Because of the severe lack of support and active dis-interest, our mission in establishing a base of potential buyers and fans has always been two-fold in educating people about 'who is Juan Atkins?..' (yes, we still need to do that Josh). Marketing against the machine/grain with unknown artists who happened to be highly celebrated elsewhere...makes for a long day's work that most of you have GROSSLY taken for granted here. Moreover, here's a challenge to those listees who claim expertise having accomplished VERY little. When this 'dusty 'discussion was actually an everyday existence (even though it still is current), there were no second hand stories/books or american media coverage of these artists and this movement to substantiate any interest. Since the early-mid 90's this has certainly turned around dramatically affording people like Dan Sicko, Simon Reynold's, Hobey Eichlin and Mike Rubin and various

hi guys. while i have been following the thread with great zest and interest, i'd like to share something with everyone that my good friend ana sent me. i made this last night and it was fantastic. so good i'd like to share with you, just to serve as an intermission between rounds. it tastes absolutely heavenly and i think everyone should bake a loaf while composing their next email. just to have some comfort food nearby. - While this easy version of garlic bread is fine just as it is, it is also very flexible. Consider mixing chopped fresh basil or sun-dried tomatoes into butter mixture before using. 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, at room temperature 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 cloves garlic, minced 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 loaf (1 pound) hearty Italian bread 1. Heat oven to 3500. Mix butter, olive oil, garlic and salt in small bowl. 2. Slice bread into 18 pieces, about 3/4-inch thick, without cutting through bottom crust, so slices stay attached. Spread butter mixture, dividing evenly between slices, about 1 teaspoon. Wrap bread tightly in foil. 3. Bake in 3500 oven for 15 to 20 minutes or until butter is melted and bread is hot. Unwrap carefully and serve hot. okay. game on! - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Consider mixing chopped fresh basil or sun-dried tomatoes into butter mixture before using. 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, at room temperature 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 cloves garlic, minced 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 loaf (1 pound) hearty Italian bread 1. Heat oven to 3500. Mix butter, olive oil, garlic and salt in small bowl. 2. Slice bread into 18 pieces, about 3/4-inch thick, without cutting through bottom crust, so slices stay attached. RE: [313] Regarding Business
not sure if anyone forwarded this message to this list, it's from microsound : for a very interesting read check out the new XLR8R issue with Juan Atkins on the cover...in the interview with Juan he highlights some really disturbing racial issues regarding the lack of black techno/electronica DJ's in a predominantly white and (still very) racist music industry...it's really cool that XLR8R made this issue a focus... seems relevant ;) -pete - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
