Rubbish online. You need to spend at least $50 and then you pay tons on
shipping. Much of what you order isn't in stock and you end up having paid
$30 in shipping for $10 of records. Good shop if you're in NY, though.

Dan Curtin "Distort.Archive.Desire" (downlow)
I haven't bought a Dan Curtin record since his album on Sublime and this is
a real return to form. That frenetic, but funky as you like drum
programming, weird jazzy melodies, gorgeous warm basslines. It's just ace,
ace, ace.

KIM "Flores Monstrosi" (Tigersushi)
There's a handy Psychic TV track on the flip but it's the KIM track for me.
I'm guessing it's a Krautrock thing - I recognise the Ghormengast studio,
maybe Conny Plank's? - but it wouldn't be out of place on old Plastikman
b-side, stripped down to just a beat, a bassline and eerie reverb.

Krikor "Pas De Norm" (Karat)
Like Akufen but less frantic, and more of a natural groove to me. Anthony
Shakir's been playing it a lot and it was a highlight for me when I heard
him. Static-ey hi hats, stolen strings and a vocoded voice saying "bass".
What more do you want?

Plus I scored copies of Ultradyne's "E-Coli" and "...Is Evil" releases.
Wicked.

2003-07-28 Thread Jonny McIntosh
I'm not sure if these are the new Technics I used in Liverpool (Scott?) but
something very weird happened with the pitch at one point. Basically it
started wavering all over the place. When I mixed out, which was like mixing
out of a badly drummed disco record, the new record was at about -6, which
was not right at all but prior to that I thought I'd maybe had a wee bit too
much to drink. I've heard other people have experienced similar things
(Tristan?). Personally I'd buy a mkII.

I was going to ask if anyone had any strong recommendations on jazz from
after the 70s. Andrew Hill's album from 2002, "Dusk", is a firm favourite of
mine - I'm listening to it for about the 200th time as I type. It isn't
Marsalis style classic jazz, it isn't noisy art made for Wire readers, it's
just ace. Much like Joe Henderson (yes OK, Jurren so what? ;) Andrew Hill
just focused on his own musical personality, without caring much for
fashion. That's a good signal that Here-lies-great-music if you ask me.
Anyone else got some hot late jazz tips?

which isn't so great. But if, like me, you're only after those mixes and

Hee hee. I don't like biographical type documentaries. I'd rather they got
into the technical stuff, the problems they faced etc. Even if you know
nothing in advance you learn something, and some of the enthusiasm rubs off.
I saw a fantastic documentary on Mark Morris, the choreographer. Usually I'd
put dance on a par with Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals but not after seeing
that.

Jurren: "Flood" is good, especially the cover art! Check with Nick the
Record, I think he has one on sale. Hit me off list if you want.

Personally, I'll stick to Blue Note and suggest, as well as those Herbie
Hancock LPs:

Joe Henderson's "Page One"
Kenny Dorham's "Una Mas"
Bobby Hutcherson's "Patterns"
Eric Dolphy "Out To Lunch!"
Pete LaRoca "Basra"

That's nowhere near enough!

My favourites: "Empyrean Isles" is far better than "Maiden Voyage". "The
Prisoner" & "Speak Like A Child" are gorgeous, layered post bop lps. The
Japanese only "Dedication" for the fantastic solo "Nobu" - and of the later
electronic ones, my pick would be "Sextant". Though all of "Sextant",
"Mwandishi" and "Crossings" are essential. I prefer this stuff to
"Headhunters" and later. Saying that, most later albums have some track that
makes it all worthwhile. If you can track them down, pick up the 12s of
"Stars In Your Eyes" (promo for the extended mix) and "Magic Number". There
was a really tedious South Bank show (UK ITV) on Herbie Hancock last week.
It didn't encourage me to run and grab his recent stuff.

Definitely - I'd love to see more people getting into doing this sort of
stuff!

Basically you are alright with a copy of Ableton - you can control it
adequately with a mouse and keyboard, and once you've got your tracks
together and ready to mix, you're away!

But to *really* step into the world of 3rd wave DJing, the best thing to
do is get hold of a MIDI controller keyboard which has lots of knobs and
sliders on it - map the sliders and knobs and keys to various Ableton
controls (mutes, volume levels, effects sends) and before long you'll
start to feel nearly as physically connected to the set you're playing
as you do with traditional decks and vinyl.

(313) Hello again

2003-04-15 Thread Jonny McIntosh
Hey! I've been off list for a while. I notice all the talk of Shake in
Holland, sorry to be a bit late, but how was he? He was playing up at Scott
& Nick's T-Funkshun in Liverpool on Friday and played all kinds of stuff:
KDJ, The Clash, old Prelude stuff and, of course, Radiohead. Someone's
probably mentioned it already. It was a great sojourn oop north. Great to
meet the debonair and few pints worse for wear Alex Bond - where did you get
to? Left the T-Funkshuneers in the pub with Shake the next day, though he
was strictly on the Mecca Cola. Not been much in the way of great Detroit
records for me lately, but maybe I've just been missing the recommendations
and playlists from here. Mills' "Medium" is maybe the only thing I've picked
up. Oh, and the latest Theo Parrish with Hanna but that one's going to sit
on the shelves, I think. Has anyone seen the Liaisons Dangereuses LP reissue
here in the UK yet? Enough questions for one post.

Ken, and Dan if that's Mr. Butler, I didn't see either of you? What a night,
especially after it cleared out a bit and he wasn't playing that awful U2
remix. I didn't get my groove on till, what I have since learned was, "All
Over Your Face" by Ronnie Dyson got dropped. Later, when he dropped Sparkle
"Disco Madness" followed by Rare Essence "Disco Fever"... Woohoo! Then I was
jumping and screaming to "Jazz Is The Teacher". Dunno what the record Placid
is asking about was, but it was evil. I intend to go out a lot more this
year :)

Re: (313) blaze

2003-01-13 Thread Jonny McIntosh
"Keeping My Mind" is record number one on my wants list. I agree, it's
strange Blaze have become popular now that they're not quite as on it as
they were. Still, they come out with some quality cuts, and I think "Natural
Blaze" was their best album. I don't have much to add to the
recommendations, of early stuff my favourite's "Sometimes Love" by Jerry
Edwards on Easy St. I don't know why this wasn't on either of those "Pure
Blaze" compilations?! "If You Should Need A Friend" and "Reaching" stand out
from then, too. They really got going in the period up to '94, I'd say, with
the stuff on Sumo, Polar etc. Mid Nineties stuff like Debbie Pender, with
those organ basslines, helped define that UK garage sound (for better or for
worse), and "Moonwalk" is perhaps my favourite Blaze record ever. It'll be
tracks like these they'll be remembered for, I imagine, rather than the
likes of "Star Suite". I think innovative house probably largely lies
elsewhere these days. That's not to say I don't make a point of checking
everything with their name on it though :)

i've always thought it weird that blaze has become popular in the last few

I agree Ken - but I think "Do You Remember House?" sucks :) I was born in
1977, so no, I don't remember house before it was house. Shoot me. "I Think
Of You" and "Gloria's Muse" from the LP are both ace, but another Blaze
triumph last year was their collaboration with LLV for "Brand New Day". And
I completely agree about it dividing people along soulful vs punk lines in
their attitude to house, which is a shame. I know which side I'd rather be
on, but great music is made without a guiding theory, rather just listening
to your own voice - to get all hokey - and pointless genre divisions obscure
that fact.

I'm with KJ. Can I get a promo? ;)

Seriously, it just so happens that the best techno being made right now is
by people on or near to 313. Running through my favourite ten or twenty
records this year I see several on Delsin, Rush Hour, Down Low and Emoticon.
It's not all that surprising, perhaps: the best music tends to come out of
groups of people all contributing ideas and communicating with each other.
One of the great things about 313 is that it's facilitated a lot of that.
It's seriously reaffirmed *my* faith in any music business, in any case - it
can be done on a cottage industry level, and it can be a lot more fun and
rewarding doing it that way. And all I do is DJ at friends' parties
sometimes.

I'm not at home, as you can guess but I have it backed with an edit of
Stevie Wonder. I can't remember which track, maybe "Another Star" but I'm
not sure. Matrix is WON001. No artist info is given. Side by side, there's

OK. If I've misread I apologise, though I'll confess I'm still unable to see
it when I read your emails. That's not reading between lines :) Just one
point, I'm sure you *can* play unknown records on the fly: all records are
unknown at some point. That's precisely my point about pitch control: it's a
lot easier. If it isn't your bag, then fair enough. I don't think we
actually disagree there, given my misreading. And I'm not suggesting you do
have to do it all the time. As Neil pointed out to me, if you need to be at
plus 8, you're going to have to use your hands. I'm not claiming there's any
more merit in it than as a general approach. If I've given the impression of
suggesting people must mix in one way then that'll be my mistake. My last
post on this.

Take care,

I don't quite get what you're saying - you're right. Please try and
construct well formed sentences, it makes it easier for me. I'm suggesting
people can try the pitch control technique - it's not, as you seem to be
saying (and this is a prime example of where you get incoherent), cheating
or impossible. It isn't: I do it, others do it and it's fine. It's OK. Maybe
you just can't manage it. That's OK too. Maybe you feel your 6 years'
professional experience is being undermined? I'm sorry about that. All I am
suggesting is that it can be done and that it has it's benefits. But then
*you* are the one telling us about "horses for courses", so you know this,
right? Anyway, I'm not going to continue flogging this dead horse. If you
feel the need to continue your hilarious gags like the CJ initials one, do
it offlist, and try the even better gag: "Have you got a rubber, Jonny". It
kills me every time.

Sorry 313. Maybe I've been reading the DHP too much lately.

Re: (313) re: best decks

2002-11-20 Thread Jonny McIntosh
I don't mean to go on, but...

You can *hear* whether a record is too fast or slow. You don't have to know
in advance. Also: cueing up is *faster* when you get used to not touching
the records. Try it. If anything, pitch mixing means you have more control
over records and therefore don't have to worry about, say, disco records
that speed up at a chorus: you accurately compensate as it happens.

I'll say it again: try it. I don't touch records in the mix, and I don't
organise my records by bpm or front -> back (I'm not sure what that means
but I think you mean programming out a set in advance), and believe it or
not, can mix records I've never heard before: I buy new ones after all. And
it is much easier doing this by using the pitch control.

Re: (313) re: best decks

2002-11-20 Thread Jonny McIntosh
But it's worth persevering with. I rarely touch the record or platter and it
gives you far more control over those records that aren't constant, e.g.
disco. It also doesn't sound so obvious. You also become far more sensitive
to tempo changes - it'll take about 10-20 seconds to get stuff pretty much
dead on when cueing up.

I wouldn't follow Pierre when it comes to beat matching in any case ;)

Not much to add to this, but that I had a really great time. Any night I end
up fully baked at 5am with my head between my speakers listening through
West Ends and Preludes rates highly.

Ken did an excellent job getting them going: even the Norwich City
supporters seemed to be bobbing their heads (I can't understand why they
were there - they were playing Palace but at home?). If I had one complaint
it would be that you played "Promised Land", reducing already slight choice
of records by one. I was badly prepared as it turns out: I ended up playing
every record in my bag and a b-side I've never even listened to before...
doh. One trainspot I will do for you Anya was my favourite moment: Bas
Noir's "Addicted 2 Luv [Tony Humphries dub]" - I don't care about anyone
else but *I* was going off when I played that :) Shawn - I will remind you
of that Sheila E offer ;) The special guest played some classics for me,
too: "The Word Is Love", Clay Acox's "Keep On Dancing". Top stuff. My ears
are still ringing, but that might be the West End/Prelude abuse when I got
home. Brendan: my D Train favourite is "Trying To Get Over".

The highlight for me, though, was seeing everyone. I've said it before but
London 313ers are some of the nicest, most down to earth people. BIG shout
outs to you all: Dan, Brendan, Guy, Nicole, Anya, a not as drunken as usual
Tristan, Ian and of course massive thanks to Ken, Toby and Emile. See you at

The Kenny Larkin mix of "Xirtam 2" is downright dangerous with two copies.

It did come out on 12" fairly recently, i.e. about 2 or 3 years ago. One of
those reissue series, I forget which label, but the kind of thing you pick
up in Selectadisc/Fopp. Also track down his absolutely stunning "I Want Your
Love" 12" from the mid 90s. I'm pretty sure Soul Brother reissued that too,
but my copy's on Mighty Fine. It's essential.

Re: (313) 100 BEST DJ IN THE WORLD (Mills)

2002-11-04 Thread Jonny McIntosh
Personally, I like to get the dancers dancing and the 'spotters 'spotting: I
like having the whooping, screaming, yelling, jacking, climbing the walls
AND the googly eyed "what's he doing?!? What's that record?!" You don't have
to dance to recognise that it's a pretty similar achievement: everyone comes
away saying, damn he/she banged it out - *that's* what I'm after.

As to how you do it, do it any way you want to. I used to do tricks far more
than I do now, I now never scratch beyond the odd second copy doubling up,
and I pretty much conform to Cyclone's "sleep house" school of DJing. I
certainly *wouldn't* say that the mix supercedes the records - quite the
opposite - and in any case, it's just something that I have observed works
better for the music I play. Some of the "sleep house" gang would say that
mixing it up in the Mills style is mix over content, but they'd be equally
wrong. It's horses for courses, and I suppose a good DJ will adapt
accordingly. In my case, it's certainly not lack of skill - I'm relying on
some charity here :) - nor is it some deeper than thou homage to the house
canon, it just works for me. Not to say there aren't style over content DJs,
but they're the *real* boring ones.

All just IMHO.

Re: (313) magic trax/ Fowlkes

2002-11-04 Thread Jonny McIntosh
I've got the Tresor 12" of Magic Trax: it's got "Flash Flood", a Drexciya
track, "FFWD" and something else (maybe Blake Baxter?). What else is on the
bootleg?

I never realised that the Infiniti Collection came out on vinyl (I recently
came upon the promo Sonar 123 on Metroplex, the Peacefrog 12" of which I
looked for for years)! I spent a long Christmas holiday in the Hong Kong new
territories with that, "Landcruising" and Sean Deason's "Razorback" on CD.
All 3 conjure fantastic, vivid recollections of rickety boat trips out to
island restaurants and Christmas Eve midnight treks through the countryside
to pick up champagne from a 7-11.

Yeah I think the re-issue is a good thing, people need to know and hear this
influence. The oft-overlook missing link here is legendary German producer
Conny Plank, who has produced other greats like early Kraftwerk, and even
D.A.F., Ultravox, (and I think even has some Devo).

Anyway there's no doubt the Liasons music had a big influence on the 80's
Detroit homemede clique/club prep scene (a la Charivari, Direct Drive,
Giavanti, Luomo Detroit, etc.) when it was all about european names &
clothing styles, import records and stiff kraftwerkian jerky nu-wave funk.
Refer to Techo Rebels book, chapter 2 "Party Out of Bounds" for more on this
cool melting pot (also united in part by what Mojo was playing on the radio
airwaves)...

Annoyingly, the US version has a different tracklisting to the EU version.
The former's got a new track whereas the latter's got an old one. So I'm
going to have to try and score a US pressing.

Whilst on the Balihu tip, check out Danny Wang and Brennan Green's remix of
Crazy Penis on Paper. A top slow jam with ace strings and a heart wrenching
dub. My girlfriend pointed out it will mix well with Leroy Hutson's "All
Because Of You", and she was right. Keep an ear out for DJ Shakides in the

invented it.

Re: (313) Record cleaners

2002-10-24 Thread Jonny McIntosh
This came up not so long ago, but the general agreement was:

Slightly soapy, lukewarm water, rinsed gently will do the job pretty well.
This has best results in my experience. For some things lighter fuel's OK,
but for sticky crap - like the Irn Bru I had on a Donald Byrd LP - soapy
water is superior. Just make sure it's not too hot, obviously. Commercial
record cleaning fluid is usually just cleaner lighter fuel, and far too
expensive. You can apparently get mini hoover things which do the job best,
but I wouldn't get that anal.

You could pick up the recent reissue of Classic Fingers - nicely done on 3
bits of vinyl. The previous one on Blackmarket was only 2 slices. Amnesia

originals can be hard, but then you can be patient (I'm not very good at

Just for the record, it's Chuck Roberts, not Chuck D on that release on

Just a quickie to file my report on Scott McGill & T-Funkshun's new

music in Liverpool, and they're a great bunch - I had a great time on Friday

I left three of them at 2pm the following day, still in the pub, with a
large queue of Sambucas lined up. I bow down... ;) The next couple of nights
with Baby Ford and then Luke Solomon will be great, never mind Valentine's
Day. I also bumped into an old school friend, Jamie Ball, whose Turning
Point records are as bonkers and scary as I'd expect. Check out Mark
Forshaw's "Revolution" - with a healthy dose of Rob Hood influence.

I can't handle that closed ear business, especially when DJing, as it makes
you either monitor via headphones or monitors, never somewhere in between. I

Toby's sense, salary or something to buy the fixed ones ;)

They're also supposed to be flat response, i.e. monitoring headphones. Most

listening over headphones, as I don't care for my neighbours all that much.

It's the other way round for me. The Nubian Mindz track just seems poorly
executed to my ears, and the vocal sample annoys, but the Freedom Soundz

Recent buys for me:

Blaze "Spiritually Speaking" LP - the EW&F comparisons at their most apt. My

Freaks "The Washing Machine". A cut above the usual bouncy fare.
Jazzanova remix of MAW's "Our Time Is Coming" - a Roy Ayers megamix remix.
Osunlade pres. Nadirah Shakoor (sp? - not as bad as Jurren's attempt on
Jacek Sienkiewicz, I hope ;). The slower cut, "Touched My Soul" grabbed me a
few months back, I'm glad it's now out and I found it.

I noticed this yesterday. Annoying, as I was wanting to download a few of
them mixes over at hotmix. I'm ambivalent about their reasons: the
resurgence of electro/new wave/italo type stuff is no different to all other
music in that most of its rubbish (I mean Italo itself has got a pretty bad
quality ratio) and the hotmix/clone/viewlexx stuff tends be the good stuff
for me. And although the Electroclash thing can be overblown, people with
peaked haircuts are fairly benign. All the media hype doesn't stop anyone
from getting on doing their own thing, really. Still, I clearly don't know
Hotmix et al's reasons. Maybe they just don't want to be part of the
Spectacle, or some such thing. I hope they still make records, though
Viewlexx has stopped.

KDJ plays the later disco mix which came out in 1979 (or 78) and is just
subtitled "New Version". I have it on a UK EMI 12" release.

Re: [313] it´s house!

2002-08-16 Thread Jonny McIntosh
Chip E "It's House" (or "It's Dub") on a DJ International 12" that has 6
early Chip E cuts. Also has "Time To Jack" on it. The original came out on
House in around '84, I think?

[313] Prescription page

2002-08-14 Thread Jonny McIntosh
Right, I've brought in all my Prescriptions and knocked up a quick page
which you can view at:

www.timetojack.org/prescription/

Let me know of any spelling errors or other problems.

I'm planning on scanning in labels later on, but our scanner is crap and our
design software pretty basic, so if anyone fancies giving it a shot, please
do. I'm aiming for jpegs 100 pixels wide, or thereabouts.

Tristan's offered to fill in the blanks in the list, so that'll be OK, but
if anyone has spare copies of the blanks, drop me a line.

Cheers,

Jonny

I'll do it if you want, I've got some free webspace and time. If anyone
wants to send me a copy of that Chuggles & Nagual 12" to help complete the
set, that'd be good ;) But seriously, I'm happy to give it a shot. I'm not
doing much at work today except umm and ahh over whether I think Kevin Yost
is really cheesy.
