I do appreciate the throwback simplicity of the 9 logo, but
appreciate the Blade Runner nod from Adam Beyer. God love the Swedes for
making Michigan a better place (Lidstrom, Ikea, Swedish Club of Farmington

Enrico Polazzo's logo looks like something you'd see from a pharmaceutical
company or third rate lawfirm, and Loco Dice's looks like something for a
vague startup company that has twee ukelele music in their commercials.
Walker & Royce screams "craft beer for men with neckbeards" and MK's logo
is WAY too close to Michael Kors' logo for my liking. Boris Brejcha is
 obviously a juggalo.

This concludes my wrap up of the logos on the Movement of 2020 poster.
Tune in next week when I propose Seth Troxler play nothing but renaissance
music and vuvuzela during his allotted time spot.

clicking off artists you like (make sure you go through 8 or 9 pages

Ghostly brings back 'Techno Rebels' T-shirts for Dan Sicko scholarship

Posted By Lee DeVito on Wed, May 20, 2015 at 1:48 PM

Among the many artifacts on display at Exhibit 3000 — Underground
Resistance's secret techno museum in Detroit — is a book enclosed in
a glass case called Techno Rebels: The Renegades of Electronic Funk
by journalist Dan Sicko. Our tour guide for the day gave the book
props, saying he felt it accurately captured the essence and told the
story of Detroit techno in a way few other books have.

Sicko died in 2011 at the age of 42, having battled ocular melanoma
since being diagnosed in 2008. Shortly after, Ghostly adapted his
book title into a Detroit Renegade of Electronic Funk limited run
T-shirt with all proceeds going to help raise money for Sicko's
 family.

Fours years later, the Detroit Sound Conservancy has launched a
campaign to create a special music journalism scholarship in Sicko's
name, and Ghostly is bringing back the T-shirt to help raise funds.
The shirt is now offered in black and indigo, and proceeds from all
online sales will go directly to DSC.

Head over to Ghostly's store to grab one, or WSU Press to pick up a
copy of the book. Check out MT's original review of the book here.

Any chance of changing the subject line to include 313 again?
On May 2, 2014 9:01 PM, kent williams chaircrus...@gmail.com wrote:

Apparently everything's back to normal for Yahoo posts to 313.

But the mailing list software no longer changes the 'From:' address, so if

Re: (313) EZMLM problem

2014-04-25 Thread Matthew Kane
Mailman 2.1.16 has the Threadable change.

On Fri, Apr 25, 2014 at 10:12 AM, kent williams chaircrus...@gmail.com wrote:
Apparently there is a problem with something called DMARC that big e-mail
providers are implementing. I've quoted the e-mail from Brian Behlendorf
(who is the man behind hyperreal.org) on the subject.

The big problem is people with yahoo.com e-mail addresses. The way EZMLM
works is that it takes your e-mail and resends it to all the list members.
Any mail server implementing DMARC rejects e-mails where the FROM: address
is x...@yahoo.com, but it doesn't come from a yahoo mail server.

This has resulted in people getting bounce notices from hyperreal. It has
 happened to me, and I don't even have a yahoo.com e-mail address.

Bottom line is the hyperreal team is working on a solution, but this will
likely screw up 313 emails for the near term.

If you're an e-mail list wizard and can suggest a linux based mailing list
server that can circumvent this stupidity, please let me and
 (br...@hyperreal.org) know.

 -

If you list is still active and hasn't been swept away by folks moving to
Facebook or whatever, you might have heard complaints from yahoo.comusers,
or possibly even folks who have started to see strange bounces where
yahoo.com senders are involved. This is due to a current hullabaloo about
an anti-spam tech called DMARC and Yahoo's recent and strict implementation
 of it.

 http://thehackernews.com/2014/04/yahoos-new-dmarc-policy-destroys-every.html

DMARC is a system designed to allow domain owners to specify policies and
rules regarding how to deal with email from senders using that domain. For
example, for an email with a From header like:

 From: Brian brianbehlend...@yahoo.com

Yahoo published a policy that says unless that email came from Yahoo's
servers, it should be rejected. This is a great anti-spam technique given
that lots of spammers use yahoo.com addresses fraudulently (I guess?). But
what it means for senders to mailing lists like those we host at Hyperreal,
when that mail goes through Hyp and comes back to Yahoo's servers, it
bounces. Not only that, but that Yahoo sender's mail bounces at Gmail and
other mail service providers who implement DMARC. Those bounces can cause
chaos, of course. Ezmlm/qmail will keep track of those bounces and at least
let subscribers know they're missing messages and why, and shouldn't unsub
those users automatically, but it still causes chaos.

More details on technically why this is wrong:

 http://www.ietf.org/mail-archive/web/ietf/current/msg87153.html

Yahoo appears to not get why this is a big deal:

 http://yahoo.tumblr.com/post/82426971544/an-update-on-our-dmarc-policy-to-protect-our-users

There is no good fix here. Changing the From: header to say something like

 From: Brian Behlendorf via sfra...@hyperreal.org

seems wacky, but it's what Threadable did, specifically for DMARC-checking
 recipients and DMARC-policy-publishing sender domains:

 http://blog.threadable.com/how-threadable-solved-the-dmarc-problem

Sadly, though, no open source mailing list manager has implemented this
well. Mailman seems to have implemented this partially, but no one's even
talking about this for ezmlm and I doubt it'll happen. I've not decided
whether to move the Hyperreal mailing lists to Mailman or something else,
but clearly we need to move off of ezmlm anyways. I was hoping to be able
to choose between a couple of them, but now that choice seems much more
narrow (and not necessarily the best - Sympa was looking promising too).

Anyways - I am sad that this is how things have played out, that I can't
provide a quick resolution to this. For now all I can suggest is asking
youryahoo.com users to switch to another domain if they want to participate.
But that sucks as an answer. If anyone has better ideas (or
programming/migration talent to contribute) let me know.

2003-10-06 Thread Matthew Kane
It looks like Stewart Walker is leaving the States and is playing at the
Phoenix Landing in Boston in two days.

Never seen him live, and it's probably my last chance, but LTJ Bukem is
playing the same night. Just how good is Stewart Walker? I've not heard a
whole about his live sets, even though I dig his records.

(i think i can figure the rsponse anyway but i figured i'd ask)

Next summer I will have my first paid vacation time ever and I would like
to make the cross-country road trip I never took in college.

Maybe I'll be able to hit Detroit, but where else should I try and go as a

[313] Paris + Italy

2002-06-11 Thread Matthew KANE
Hey folks,

At the beginning of July, I will be finishing up my stay in Europe with some
vacationing. I would very much like to know of any good places (soirees, record
stores, restaurants, whatever, just not-touristy stuff) in Paris (June 29 - July
4), Venice, Florence, or Rome (July 4 - July 12)?

Thank you!

[313] herbert at the movies

2002-05-27 Thread Matthew KANE
Well, yesterday afternoon, I decided to see some questionable films.

The first was Irreversible, the one that freaked out everyone at Cannes because
of a 9-minute long horrifying rape scene. That is not what this post is about.

The other was called Le Defi (the challenge). It's about Paris breakdancers,
supposedly, but there's not enough of a plot to really bother with. Mostly
dancing. The only reason I went to see it was the soundtrack by Herbert.

I wasn't expecting him to get screen time, though. He plays a short set with the
help of a can of Coca-Cola Light.

[313] sound compression

2002-05-22 Thread Matthew KANE
WAVs or AIFF do not have any sound quality loss but the files are much
bigger as they don't use much compression, if they use any compression at all.

These formats and Sun's .au too can use quite a few compression schemes, such as
uLaw, MACE, ADPCM (is that compression or just encoding?) etc. etc. These are
all lossy, though. I don't think there are ANY lossless compression algorithms
for sound, unless some corporation or the RIAA is sitting on a patent

[313] andrea parker recent productions

Aside from things on Touchin' Bass, she released two EP's last year or the year
before on Quatermass.

The Swamp/Expedition - 12

and

The Dark Ages EP

I've not heard the Dark Ages EP, but I think they are the same thing in
different formats.

Miss Parker is one of the two DJ's I have always wanted to see and haven't.
(Maybe she doesn't play in the US?) Does she post a schedule or calendar thingy
anywhere?

2002-03-21 Thread Matthew KANE
hehe... one of the tracks I've rediscovered is Praga Khan's Injected with a
poison... only tracks by these guys I know of ; early commercial acid, I
know, but extremely well done... have these guys released other interesting
stuff, or were they just a one-off ?

Praga Khan is actually only one of the Lords of Acid, I think.

They released an album last year called Farstucker. They specialize in really
cheap sex and drug humor.

One of their other folks is Oliver Adams who produced the theme to the Mortal
Kombat movies.

I think Khan has released something like three albums in the last two years.

Their packaging for some of their releases is rather provocative. Voodoo-U has a
whole bunch of naked devil women. The P_ssy EP has a photo of a naked woman from
mid-thigh to navel with her pubic hair replaced by a cat's face.

I think I have both mixes, but as far as I can recall they are not on the same
 CD.

The Ghost in the Shell CD I have has To Be or Not To Be (some remix, I forget
the name, I think it has Juan Atkins in the credits)

My copy of Innovator has the original (I guess, it doesn't give any remixing
credit)

The CDDB listing for the OTHER ghost in the shell CD has To Be or not To Be (Mix
of a Mix Remix) and some other tracks by the same people as on the one I have
(BCJ, Takkyu Ishino, Joey Beltram, Brother from another Planet, Mijk van Dijk,
Scan X, The Advent, Hardfloor, and Westbam)

Making sure this is totally on topic, I lost my Ghost in the Shell CD because I
left in the car I rented for DEMF. :)

In addition, CDDB says there was a second CD with another remix of Derrick May's
