Re: (313) subject detroit vol. 2 CDR?
I purchased a replacement copy at Record Time Ferndale a few years ago. It came in the original case. But the CD was a CDR. Didn't have the green screen on the actual CD. Friday night. Ken Collier tribute. This was at a really nice space just South of Jefferson near the Shorecrest Realy good sound, great vibe and good music. Al Ester was probably the highlight, haven't seen someone dance around behind the decks that much for a while. Sistrum/Aestethic Audio party. At a Jamaican juice bar on Woodward called Trenchtown. Really enjoyed the alcohol free atmosphere, it seemed noticeably different. More dancing for a start. Omar S came on at about 3.30. He was excellent, really hitting his stride, but we had to leave at 4 sadly. Saturday night Soul Skate Excellent as ever. Great to skate to such good music and of course to watch the spectacle. Probably less exciting for North Americans but nothing on that scale exists in the UK that I'm aware of. Derrick May and Quentin Harris Brilliant downtown space, perfect for a party - small and dark. Both DJs good, was pleasantly surprised by Quentin Harris. He really plays his records well, if you know what I mean. (313) Festival acts so far
As I said, haven't been at the festival that much but saw a couple of good things. Egyptian Lover and Jamie Jupiter: The festival production is particularly good this year, with the Red Bull Stage under a huge canopy by the river, next to the pyramid thing. Watching them perform with the audience grasped firmly in the palm of their hands in the golden late evening sunshine was magical. Great entertainers and pretty funny. DBX: Slightly slow start but excellent second half of his set. He said he was having some technical problems but it sounded pretty good to me. Slightly surreal to see him playing live while scantily clad gogo dancers with 'Paxahau' emblazoned on their bottoms writhed on the projection screen. Ectomorph: V nice bubbling set. Hello Nice to have the mp3 but worth mentioning that the BBC is more likely to cover artists like Derrick again if we all go and click on the 'listen again' link on the 1Xtra website: http://www.bb.co.uk/1xtra/allstar/ You don't actually have to listen to it if you're not a fan of Realplayer (who is?) but it's worth doing for tactical reasons. There was a fair amount of preparation needed for the gig so we were all pretty hyped up about it- there were also folk buying tickets for the show who hadn't been seen out for 10 years or more so the pressure was on to make sure it was night worth venturing out for the silver surfers. After an hour or so of warm up from the Rubadub DJ's it was all go- we had to lock the doors at 1 AM leaving a queue half way down the street for the unfortunates without tickets. Juan, Mike, Skurge and Mark Tayor took the stage and it all just exploded from there- Cosmic Cars, The Chase, No UFOs, Clear, an extended jam on Game One, Alleys Of Your Mindahh, it was all just too good. The beats are pre-recorded with Skurge mixing them in but all the basslines and synth parts were played by the guys live- Mike did the basslines, Mark Taylor did the lead melodies and Juan awas doing all the vocoder vocals and additional synth parts- it was loose enough that you knew it was live but tight enough that you didn't loose any of the mechanical drive of good Techno/Electro- even just teh odd unexpted extra bass not or solo was enough to remind you that it was 4 guys and not 4 machines making all the noise. Best bits- Juan adlibbing the lyrics to Dead Or Alive's You Spin Me Round (like A Record Baby) over the top of Game One, the general hug-fest that broke out at the front of the stage towards the end where it seemed like half the crowd were all together in mass huddle of warmth and general goodness, seeing Marco Bernardi's smile when Marty dropped his remix on the new Iridite after Model 500 had finished...lot's of shining little moments mostly lost in the fog now! Then it was back to our Warehouse near Glasgow Airport for the After Party - Skurge was on the decks straight away and tore it up for a good couple of hours- in my opinion he's about the best of the UR DJs because he plays the widest variety of music- the best of the UR back cat AND a wicked variety of other stuff too. Mike and the rest of the guys were all there too, just hanging out and enjoying the vibes. We had a good couple of hundred people there and no bouncers needed at all- good people, good music, great night. Eventually the night had to end- think I staggered out at around 12-ish to the most brutal sunny day I remember in a long time- watched the football (Rangers v Celtic!) at a friends house and collapsed about 4ish into a 16 hour sleep. Feeling pretty bad today but not as bad as Wilba, Ruadub head honcho who had to get up on the Sunday afternoon to take Mike and the guys up to Loch Lomond (he loves the hills of Scotland does Mike!) and therefore didn't have the luxury of the 16 hour sleep :) It was just a total music-centred, feel good sort of night and really helped me remember that there's more to Techno that arguing endlessley about small details on internet forums :) cheers Jason

So there was a bit of personal wackness going on as well. I asked my friend how he felt about the sitch and he said, basically kwame blew it. He got comfortable and let the position go to his head. Like when you feel very important and you act untouchable, then when things begin to touch you, you do things outside of your morals (usually called doing what I gotta do by those engaged) to try to maintain the illusion for fear it may crumble your image (meanwhile doing a great job of that all by yourself). And as is the norm in those situations, you're the last one to realize how bad you blew it. Usually it's too late to fix it. I could care less about the location of your dong, but fxcking your friends over (and their wives) is never forgive action where I'm from. Sucks. I've never had a problem, other than the ongoing hellos from people as I pass by, that kind of freaked me out a bit at first because living in the UK, especially in Liverpool, people don't tend to say hello to people they don't know, but in Detroit, there is a strong sense of southern hospitality, people say hello to one another as they pass by, in elevators, on the streets, everywhere you go. Just as in every other city, there are places you wouldn't want to ride your bike, as it gets a bit dangerous, but during the daytime, I tend to not worry where I ride, just after dark I try to be cautious. People here do tend to bring there bikes into their apartments, so I'd suggest speaking to your hotel to see if they have an inside storage space for bikes. Bike riding in Detroit has become more and more popular, as the gas prices are very high. I tend to see 4-10 bike riders a day at the minimum in the summer and I work a 11-5, so I'm sure I miss the majority of good biking hours. It's a major city, so yes, you will be riding amongst a lot of highrises and parking lots, but theres also parks, the river walk, the graffitti mile (which will hopefully be renovated enough by DEMF you can ride from the lake front to Eastern Market). Detroit's very spread out, so you shouldn't expect to ride from downtown to Record Time Roseville for an outing, that would end up being a 20+ mile journey roundtrip. There are very cute neighborhoods that are a good ride-through, such as Woodbridge, which is about a 10 minute ride from Hart Plaza. I'd suggest a guide, though, for anything your doing in the city, especially if you've never been here before. If your interested in a bike tour around the city, I'd be willing to do a tour on the Saturday from noon till 2. Let me know. Couldn't agree more about Vibes, it's tricky to find but well worth the visit. Best to call in advance to check that it's open though. Sorry, try again, here: http://www.sweet-juniper.com/2007/11/it-will-rise-from-ashes.html Me and two of my friends got inside the perimeter of the building last year We found somewhere to actually enter and were about to go in when we looked up. At a window on one of the upper floors we saw a person waving at us. Even though it was the middle of the day and blazing hot sunshine at that, the lone figure totally spooked us out. We beat a hasty retreat. Having read that blog however and marvelled at the author's pictures of the buildinng's interior I've decided to try again this year. As far as security goes, the central station, like many of Detroit's abandoned buildings is precisely that: literally abandoned. We didn't see a soul during our visit (apart from that disturbing lone figure) and attempts to secure the building were haphazard at best. It was as if people had managed to somehow block out and forget about the presence of this enourmous hulking wreck that dominates the area. -Original Message- From: M Ng [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 19 March 2008 19:59 To: Michael Kuszynski [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: 313 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: (313) things to do in detroit during the festival (except the festival) I've made it my mission to see the Michigan Central Station! Re: (313) OT hockey time
With the lack of ticket sales, I am sure there will be plenty of tickets available if Detroit makes it to the finals. There are still tickets available for every home game of the Conference Finals. The question is how much are you willing to pay? On 5/10/07, Will Web [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Ha!!! Nice try but Crosby can't carry a whole team and a cup. Go WINGS! Re: (313) Black Devil Disco Club, Terrace new-ish stuff
I've been enjoying those tracks a lot, especially the dub of 'I Regret The Flower Power'. That high pitched male vocal refrain is really stuck in my head. On 4 May 2007, at 00:40, kent williams wrote: I have heard over and over that Black Devil Disco Club doesn't live up to the hype. Whatever. On payday I bought the '28 After' and 'Devil In Dub' (you can check out the tracks at http://www.lorecordings.com) and I've had trouble listening to anything else. It's yet another take on Italo-disco, but is a uniquely messed up version of the genre. Every track seems to throw every possible squelchy/silly/Dr.Who analog synth sound into the mix, along with what sounds like malfunctioning vocoders, helium falsetto vocals, Moroder 16th note bounce basslines and skeletal disco beats. All without hitting the dreaded wall of cheese that makes buying Italo records hazardous. 'Devil In Dub' applies classic King-Tubby style Echo+Mute dub technique to strip down and further weirdify the already darkly weird originals. Like I said, I like this a whole lot more than some people, so since Lo lets you hear the whole tracks, check it out. Eevolute's web label Eevo-Next has been a favorite of mine, to the point where I've bought the entire downloadable catalog. My latest purchase is Terrace's City Sounds EP, which has more than a few nods in the direction of Italo, but just as many towards Detroit. Solid beats and basslines, topped with swirling sad pads. It seems like Stefan Robbers' style hasn't evolved that much in the past 15 years, but for me that's not a bad thing. Instead of following the latest fads, he's stuck to his guns and evolved his compositional skills instead. It's as though each of the tracks on this CD could have been made in 1993 in terms of the superficial details of the sound and beats; but it's not as though the intervening years haven't happened. These are deep tracks, artfully arranged.

Re: (313) Most Cherished 313 Vinyl.
Ugh... erm, here's a few to start off with: Dopplereffekt - Infophysix - Dataphysix Engineering Boby Franklin Insanity - Sexplot - Westbound Eddie Kendricks - Slick - Tamla + Every Juan Atkins record I own. It's Friday, and I'm curious. What would you cats consider your most prized piece of 313-related vinyl? For me, if you'd care to know, it would have to be Dan Curtin's Silicon Dawn LP. I remember someone from DEEP records turning me on to that release, and from there I just started eating up anything with a similar sound. Discuss. Cheers, lrh
