I looked at 'Detroit Lutheran Church' on the Web and couldn't find much. Or is it a mixed congregation in the Detroit Lutheran Church (es)? Does anyone know much about the US Lutheran church at all? The Lutheran church in the US is actually quite large and divided into different synods (Missouri, Wisconsin, Evangelical, Ministerium, etc.) which all have their various takes on core Christian doctrine; they have divided especially over how they view the Bible. Additionally, the question is more like ..US Lutheran ChurcheS as each individual congregation is going to embody their faith and practice differently. And even when you look at the doctrinal distinctives and differing sects, urban churches tend to break many of the rules which one might expect when one generalizes what kind of congregation might be found in one type of Lutheranism vs. another. What I mean by this is that those distinctives may not be as important/emphasized in some congregations as in others. Of course I cannot speak authoritatively about some sort of universal/general experience, but my black friends have told me that it is often the case in their experience that the church often has had a broader, more social function in their lives when growing up (and that is not to say it's less spiritual, but rather that it has had a wider community function in their lives ) than in what they have observed in suburban and whiter settings. Of course, it should be mentioned that these are people more or less around my age (late 40s) and that probably makes some difference. Re: (313) Philip Glass
Anyone able to give a rundown of key Glass works? Not a rundown, but here's something with usually falls through the cracks : Polyrock, his minimal rock project which sounded vaguely Talking Heads-ish (must have been very early 80s). I saw him in Ann Arbor about 8 years ago (performing the soundtrack for The Beauty and the Beast) and got to talk with him briefly; when I asked him if he had considered re-releasing the project, he came quite animated and enthusiastic about it. It was slightly funny; he had a gathering of sycophants who (by their facial responses) had initially regarded my question as some kind of faux pas and were surprised when he wanted to talk about it. Phillip seems to be about the music; his ears are open no matter the style. jeff

Re: (313) How about Depeche Mode? was: new order.
never liked Depeche Mode as much but *every* electronic musician will namecheck them. I tend to lump them with the whole batch of Mute things (Normal, Fad Gadget, DM, Robert Rental) form the late 70s/early 80s) which fall under the larger hand of Daniel Miller. It's hard to get past Miller's seminal influence status during that period, right alongside TG, Cab Volt, etc. I remember when Vince left DM and everyone thought they would fall to pieces; nobody mentions Speak and Spell when they think of Depeche anymore. Interesting shift in style! After Yaz split, Clarke had some pretty nice one-off singles under the name of The Assembly (paired with various vocalists) which bear tracking down. Weren't Depeche Mode and ABC among those who would fly to Detroit to pop in to the old Music Institute? jeff
RE: (313) How about Depeche Mode? was: new order.
We hear too much the getting old theory of musical taste, but maybe whether people came to techno through an enjoyment of some type of industrial music also has a lot do with the direction of their musical tastes??? Please discuss. Sure. The old TG/EN/Cab Volt/Mute stuff certainly threads into techno - but bands like Cab Volt and even New Order (which after all evolved from Joy Division) had their flirtations with the whole NY Funk/proto-electro scene via Arthur Baker, John Robie, Benitez, etc...and it might be argued that the latter scene ties more into house. Looking back, the Durannies are quite marked up by the time period and feel awfully cheesy, but then again they did NOT seem that way when those first 12s rolled out. They were what was new and hot before they were mass-marketed. I listened to old school industrial and new wave pop (as well as most anything else I could get my hands on) and I like a good deal of what I hear these days. Also, people's tastes change as time goes on - I'm not sure how much weight one can place upon where one came from with regard to where one is going. Influences are always important, but any number of factors can influence progression or regression. I used to listen to Raw Power a lot (and I'm not opposed to slapping it on right now :-), but I'm not sure that has a lot of effect on what I like in electronic music. I think people have come to the table through a variety of paths, but it's tough at the end of the day to separate cleanly the tributaries which have flowed into the current ocean. I suppose I could have mixed in another metaphor, but I'll let the notion of using a body of water as a table suffice. :-) jeff

Re: (313) YMO/Sketch Show - Tronica
I don't have Tronica, but I bought Audio Sponge when it first came out...sounds like Hosono and Takahashi picking up right where they left off pre-Technodon (mid 80s technopop). Haruomi has the best licks - if Yukihiro is left to his own devices he veers off into sappy lounge stuff which can be tepid at best and just plain bad. Luckily Hosono is there to keep him on track for the most part (in Audio Sponge, at least). BTW, I think Ryuchi has joined Sketch Show onstage for a one-off or two. Say what you will; Sakamoto has those great neo-classical lines and Asian motifs, but Hosono has *always* been the future funk and the unsung powerhouse of YMO IMO. Re: (313) Tour de France 03 video
I just made my point with the man machine concept, which is a conventional way of interpreting technology at the time. Their music was not unconventional and abstract like say a Mortin Subotnick. I don't know your age or which particular era of Kraftwerk you're referencing (there is pre-Autobahn material), but just because it wasn't like Subotnick doesn't mean it wasn't unconventional. I was there. It was INDEED unconventional. There were but a very few bands which had any notoriety doing more than dabbling with electronic stuff back then - like Tangerine Dream and Nektar (remember them?) and NOBODY was doing what Kraftwerk was doing, which was quite unconventional whether you were taking the pulse of electronic music, rock music or pop music of the day. I would go as far as saying that there probably wouldn't be a 313 list (or it would have a different shape if there were one) had there been no Kraftwerk. We can speculate endlessly about what might or might not have happened in terms of someone else coming up with their sound - but nobody did and THEY accomplished it. And just because Juan wasn't into Kraftwerk (?) doesn't mean their influence (which is too large to gauge, really) hadn't seeped into the landscape sufficiently to be highly influential. Being my age, I can safely say that their influence is incredible. jeff
RE: (313) Tour de France 03 video
I think this was eloquently answered by JT just now Alex - something about their influence seeping into the collective unconcious (those latter two are my words, but I think - *think*) that's what JT meant. So we all have no need to exhume any argument about who did what first! ;-) Indeed - a laundry list could easily be provided of bands who milked what Kraftwerk did. Keep in mind when Autobahn was released. Even if you fast-fwd MANY years after that to the booty dance (Channel 62 anyone? The New Dance Show, e.g.) television shows in Detroit which often played what seemed like endless variations of Numbers, etc. or Mojo himself. New Wave (I hate that term!) was undeniably a big influence on many techno innovators and certainly Kraftwerk loomed large in that musical closet. Bowie, Eno, Byrne, etc. - who all went on to shape the more traditional rock/pop gardens. jeff

Re: (313) Waveless DJing
I've always thought DJ's make too much of 'reacting to a crowd', when really it's a matter of having the right crowd for the assembled lineup. i definitely disagree... Whenever I see debates like this (to crowd or not to crowd) I think of an anecdote from my friend Dean who recalls the time that he DJ-ed before some band (at the time a name...Dead or Alive - as you might have guessed, this was a few decades ago). His DJ booth was up a ladder, way over the floor - which made it a drag to lug up the record case. He was tired of the gig (he had a residency there), tired of lugging the records and feeling spunky, so he decided to try something different. I should add here that Dean always was a bit off the beaten path - at this stage he was the only DJ I knew who specialized in (his own terms) 25 cent cha-cha records. He determined not to play anything he couldn't find en route that night. He stopped at a Salvation Army outlet and found the old Joe Tex I Gotcha and Deep Purple's Smoke on the Water 45s. Instead of playing the tape which Pete Burns *demanded* of him, Dean proceeded to play both of those songs (only) at varying speeds for the whole evening. I guess that lands on the former extreme of the spectrum :-). jeff ps BTW, this is the same Dean who owns the Buddha Bar on 8 mile. Still hilarious.

Re: (313) 100 BEST DJ IN THE WORLD (Mills)
While I respect your opinion and understand that your comments are made in the context of this discussion (and also that dance music is ostensibly made for dancing), I have to say that I find the notion that someone gets to say how *I* need to react to something else in the sense that I can be marginalized when I don't is reductionistic and at least as problematic as a person who doesn't respond in the way dictated by whomever. I don't dance and I doubt I ever will; perhaps it's childhood trauma or an ill formed sense of self - whatever. That doesn't mean I don't enjoy the music nor does it mean I have to be saddled with restructuring a performative context or bumming out a DJ. It would seem like the fact that I haven't left the venue should say something. In an age where all kinds of criticism (literary, etc.) has freed art from static notions tied with the artist, I find it interesting that the monolithic notion of must-dancing still rules. I do understand the need for it and I understand how it creates a necessary symbiosis - but why does *everyone* need to be dancing in order for them to enjoy and appreciate something? We aren't all dancers, we aren't all as comfortable with dancing as each other. As a qualifier, I am not saying that any behavior or reaction to art is equally appropriate, nor am I saying there is no tie between art and artist. I just find it a bit tyrannical and quixotic to dictate behavior to a set. Again, my comments are not directed to this particular post (as I can see the connection you are making vis a vis the trend), but rather towards the notion that seems to underlie it : if I don't dance, I am unappreciative and some kind of pariah. If it's really about the music OR the mix, then I should be left to appreciate it in a way which is genuine to myself and doesn't shipwreck someone else's enjoyment. .02. jeff At 08:09 AM 11/4/2002, Toby Frith wrote: This is somewhat of a double-edged sword I think. In one respect, people go to see a DJ like Mills so they can dance. In the other respect, they go to watch his craft, which then takes the DJ out of his normal context and into that of an artist, because you are viewing him/her rather than interacting. (another argument which I'm not going to pontificate on here) So you get one half of the audience dancing and the other just watching. This has been, IMHO, the downfall of techno turntablism and the like in recent years. Too much watching, not enough dancing. I went to see Mills in Zurich a year ago and there was far too much of the latter going on. You could see him actually looking rather annoyed as one absolute classic after another (Final Frontier, Magnese) was being dropped only to see a leaden-footed and mute reaction from the crowd. How must a DJ feel when they are faced by banks of motionless people looking at them spin some records?
Re: (313) 100 BEST DJ IN THE WORLD (Mills)
I can't really articulate what I want to say, because it will mean going into that whole artist/DJ argument which I can't be arsed with. Understood - but what needs to be said here is that there is artifice involved in any performance - and being a DJ of any and every ilk still involves artifice...it's just a different kind/kinds. Some of them are simply more transparent than others. The trouble with this whole issue is the tendency to answer complex questions with simple solutions, whether it be the analysis of the DJ/artist, the crowd or the individuals in the crowd rather than recognizing either the vast blend of factors going into the pot to make the stew. IMO it's the same kind of reductionist simplicity which denies a legitimate variety of response (e.g.,not taking into account that different people represent differently). jeff (who really does do more than post ebay links :-)
