LDAP Consistency

2021-06-04 Thread Tarawerkz via 4D_Tech
Hi,

I recently implemented a feature in a v15 application that allows the users to
log in to 4D Client via their windows credentials. A script using the LDAP
LOGIN command makes a call direct from the client app to the LDAP IP address on
port 389. It works well with remote clients as well as 4D client on the set
station as 4D server.

However, I am having an issue with log in via web browsers. On login via
browser connections, the username and password parameters are passed to the 4D
Server and used to authenticate against the same LDAP address and port. Using
the same login script as the client login, authentication fails even with the
correct credentials.

Does any one have an idea why this is so? Why is the LDAP script behaving
differently when called from the client and from the server ?

Regards
Ronnie

Hi All,

I have an application that is currently receiving and sending HL7 messages from

Can anyone offer advice on how to implement a 2-way client certificate

JSON Plugin for 4Dv17

2021-04-08 Thread Tarawerkz via 4D_Tech
Hi All,

I have a client whose database application currently outputs a series of text
files in an exchange with an independent web database.
In an effort to further streamline this functionality, it have been proposed to
convert and integrate the various text file output to a JSON file format
instead.

Is there currently any 4D plugin for creating JSON files in 4D that is
compatible with 4Dv17 (Windows)?
Thank you.

Attempt to read beyond end of stream

2020-12-03 Thread Tarawerkz via 4D_Tech
Hi All,

I would like seek advice on an issue I encountered with a v15 structure file
which has been in use for a long time.

Recently, when I logged in with the designer password to make some amendments
to the code, I encounter a memory allocation error on a resource blob.
So I did a structure repair and compact using MSC utility.

After the repair, the original error is resolved but a new error appeared in
its place,
This time it is an attempt to read beyond end of stream (error code 200).
Subsequent repairs of the structure file does not remove the error.

The issue is data independent as it also appears with an empty data file.
If I were to log in as a normal user (not the designer account), the error is
not encountered.

May I ask how I can recover the structure in this instance?

SFTP & PGP Encryption

2020-10-13 Thread Tarawerkz via 4D_Tech
Hi All,

In the wake of the prevailing security considerations, my client has enquired
of the following for an on-site 4D v17 application running on Windows Server
2012…..

1. to provide an external facing SFTP through which the enterprise SAP can
connect to ?

2. to support this connection via PGP encryption (to pick up files which the
4D application will generate in CSV format) ?

Is the new version of 4D (or v18) able to support such features?

Writing 4D Data into an Excel Template

2020-08-12 Thread Tarawerkz via 4D_Tech
Hi,

I would like to ask if anyone is aware of a plugin or utility that can quickly
turnaround an export function where data from a 4Dv17.2 database (Windows
Server)
gets written directly into different worksheets inside ONE Excel document
template?

The 2nd challenge is to identify the row-ID for each record and store it on
other worksheets in the Excel template every time the same record is referenced.
Say for example, the first worksheet is titled “General” and contains customer
records and the starting row for the first customer record is row 5.
Subsequent worksheets would bear a row-ID column such that reference to the
same customer record would now be populated with “5” as the row-ID. How can we
identify this row-ID whilst populating the spreadsheet with a 4D data export on
the fly?

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

4D Application as a 3-tier System

2020-01-27 Thread Tarawerkz via 4D_Tech
Hi All,

I have an application running in a hospital environment for a number of years.
In the light of the increasing awareness of data security, the client’s IT in
their own words are looking at "redoing the whole 4dcis database onto 2 or 3
tier system where there is a database separation from application layer”

The current setup is a v15 client-server application, with about 80 concurrent
client licenses serving users located at 2 separate locations.

As it stands, a 4D application already has a 2-layer architecture being a
client-server application.
We could perhaps enhance it a little to make it a 2-tier environment by moving
the segregating the 4D Server software and the 4D structure files (business
logic) on to one server and the 4D data files (database) on to a separate
server. Doing that however has no effect on the 4D database architecture, it
still remains a 2-layer database architecture.

Apart from re-developing the application into a complete web-based application,
how can a 4D application be refreshed into a 3-tier system?

I would like to tap on the collective wisdom of the forum to gather some views
on the plausibility of the above.
Thank you.

Regards,
Ronnie

Re: 4Dv17 as a Windows Service

2019-10-21 Thread Tarawerkz via 4D_Tech
Hi Pat,

I have managed to find a solution to the 4D Service.

Recap of the problem : When the data files are sitting on a repository
different from the 4D Server and structure files, running the database
application as a Windows service will fail. The Windows log event will
indicate an error with Event ID 9 - Can’t open database. I surmised that the
issue resulted from the Windows service not being able to locate the data file
when started.

How it was solved …
Map the network drive that contains the 4D data files (so that it’s always
available when the 4D Server is rebooted.
Define the 4D service and specify the log-on user using the same administrator
account as per the log-in administrator account for the 4D Server.
Start up 4D Server as a direct app and point the to the data file on the
network drive.
Register the 4D Service.
Most critically, the path on the 4D Service has to be modified. On definition,
the path only points to the 4D Server app on C drive and the the 4D structure
files, not the data files. So I ran RegEdit to edit the registry and change
the path to the Windows Service to the 4D Link link created in step 3. The
path on the Windows Service would be as follows :
C:\Program Files\4D\4D v17.2\4D Server\4D Server.exe -s
"C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\4D Server\Favorites
v17\Local\ApplicationDbv17.4Dlink”
With this, the service ran happily (ever after?)

Ronnie

Hi Ullst,

Thanks for your mail.

The service is run-in under the administrator account with full privileges.
You are right that the default Windows service path only lays out the path to

Is there any way to modify the path in a Windows Service as such?

4Dv17 as a Windows Service

2019-10-15 Thread Tarawerkz via 4D_Tech
Hi All,

I have a 4Dv17 application that the client’s IT decided has to run on Windows
Service (under Windows Server 2012r2).
That is fine till a new requirement surfaced.

They wanted the 4D data files to be stored on separate repository, away from
the 4D Server application and the 4D structure files, ie. the .4DD, .4DR and
the log file will be stored on a drive (with a different IP address) away from
the .4DB and .RSR files and the 4D Server application.

This works fine when the 4Dv17 Server is run directly as an application.
However the service fails because apparently the service is unable to locate
the data files on the separate server when the service starts.
The service will start and quit. Windows Event Log indicated an error to the
effect that the database cannot be opened.

Is there any solution for this?

Regards,
Ronnie

Re: SQL Connection to External SQL DB

Hi Tom,

The current 4D version at the client’s site is v15.
Through the various versions of upgrade from v11 to 13 to 15, there has not
been an issue with the SQL connection.

I suspect it could be some GPOs that were pushed down….so the subsequent
investigation are narrowing down to that.

SQL Connection to External SQL DB

2019-09-15 Thread Tarawerkz via 4D_Tech
Hi All,

Need some help on a SQL connection issue….

A script that has been to access an SQL database (been deployed for years) has
suddenly stopped working and threw up the following error :

Error - [DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (SECCreateCredentials()).]SSL
Security error

In the cause of debugging, I tried a simple one-line SQL login command as
follows :

SQL Login(“IP:10.240.99.99”;$username;$password”;*)

SQL Login(“IP:10.240.99.99:1433”;$username;$password”;*)
SQL Login(“IP:10.240.99.99:1433:ssl”;$username;$password”;*)

They all resulted in 4D Syntax error that indicates a failure to connect to
remote server, with a SQL error 9918, Generic SQL error

Where has it gone wrong? Thank you for any advise.

Regards,
Ronnie

Re: Windows shutdown with 4D Server running as a service

2019-08-08 Thread Tarawerkz via 4D_Tech
Hi,

Even when initiated from the 4D-end, it might not always be a graceful exit
because the service times out when trying to stop.
Had encountered this on more than a few occasions with a client, end up we had
to rebuild the “damaged” data file and indices.
The error message at end of repair is something to the effect that data
flushing did not complete (the database application has a 24/7 listener that
receives incoming messages from other systems).

I am assuming that your Administrative function runs on a client? Sounds like a
good idea, but wondering if it might be a bit over kill for me.

Bottom line is that at some point the server is quit without regard to who is
logged in at the time whether done with a quit command or issued by the Windows
service. The admin can see who is logged by firing up a client on the server
and opening the Administration window before shutting down the computer or
shutting down the service. If after hours the admin may have no choice but to
let 4D server boot the clients off.

Thanks to those who responded.

Re: 4Dv15 app on Windows Service

2019-08-02 Thread Tarawerkz via 4D_Tech
Hi,

So it is sufficient to run the 4D service under a Service account as long as it
has full administrator rights?
There has been instances when the service starts, then it crashes when trying
to generate a PDF (generation executed on server).
But once it’s successfully generated (without crashing the service) then the
service will be ok for some days until the next occurrence.

Yes, in some cases when trying to stop the service (for example for monthly
maintenance), it takes too long and will time-out.
In which case, the IT support has no choice but to do a force-quit which at
times lead to damage of data file.

Ronnie

Re: 4Dv15 app on Windows Service

2019-08-01 Thread Tarawerkz via 4D_Tech
Hi David,

For reasons of security concerns raised by the client’s IT, we could only run
the service with a service account with administrator permissions, not quite
the full admin user.

Ronnie

4Dv15 app on Windows Service

2019-07-31 Thread Tarawerkz via 4D_Tech
Hi,

I have a Windows question to ask …..

I have a v15 application running on a Windows service on a Windows Server 2012
r2 (VM).
Problem is the service would crash randomly, sometimes every 10-14 days,
sometimes on consecutive days.

Upon restart, sometimes the service would crash again almost immediately.
A second attempt is usually sufficient to keep the service running for the next
fortnight or so.

What can be done to improve the stability of the 4D service?
FWIW, the Application Server role has not been turned on in the Server Manager.
Would turning it on actually make the running of windows service more stable?

Does anyone have any encounters like this before?

Ronnie
