I’ve been using collections and entity selections more lately and notice I
spend a lot of time in the docs trying to remember what function does what.
Some of them aren’t named very intuitively (at least to me). And I keep
forgetting which ones return a deep or shallow copy or use a query string or a
method. So I made a couple of cheat sheets that organize the functions in a way
that makes sense to me. Makes it a lot faster to find the function I’m after
for a certain situation.

Anyway, perhaps they will be helpful to some of you as well. You can find the
PDFs here:

I’m relatively new to these functions, so if my understanding needs to be
corrected somewhere, please let me know!

Re: Converting _O_PLATFORM PROPERTIES to Get system info

2018-12-11 Thread Tilman Haerdle via 4D_Tech
Drew,

we recently switched to Get system info.

Stating the obvious first, call this command once and once only on startup as
it can take more than a second to collect all information, especially on
Windows systems.

Next, yes you have to adapt your code in order to make iit work with Get system
info. But then again that's something you need to do once and the information
provided is far more precise than ever before. If you have many occurrences of
code that checks for platform specific information it definiitely makes sense
to wrap that in your own access methods.

We assign the information we need at startup to a systemwide used Shared Object
which is robust enough for more changes further down the road.

Hope this helps,
Tilman

Re: Application Metrics

2018-07-04 Thread Tilman Haerdle via 4D_Tech
We track certain events and send information about them an anonymized to our
server.

We focus on functions that are candidates for removal or functions where we
would like to know how heavily they are being used.

We also track, when users update our software and when they update their
licenses.

The application our users are using is the same we use inhouse so we basically
added some features that are available only internally.

We use 4DACTION to send JSON to our server.

We use a table with some metadata and an object field that contains all the
event-specific information. This way, we never need to modify the design of the
tracking table.

We also locally store the event information in our user's database to give full
transparency on what we transfer to our server.

Anonymity is key - we do not transfer any personal data without our user's
consent.

Tilman

Re: The Compiler is better in 16R

2018-04-09 Thread Tilman Haerdle via 4D_Tech
The compiler in 16R6 (not earlier) also finds issues like these:

c_longint($var;) // one semicolon too much

or these

case of
:($fileptr=((->file))) // too many brackets or simply put one set of brackets
is not necessary
end case

So yes, this is an advantage as the code gets more correct. Not that this
caused any errors previously but anyway it makes me feel better.

So hot from the Summit I'm working with 16R and 17beta. I'm diving into
collections in a big way and have to say this is really, really cool.

But something I just noticed is how much better the compiler is in 16R. I
converted a large project to 16R to see how it works. One of the first
things I noticed were a number of issues flagged by the compiler that
haven't been flagged before. Curious, I thought. Several of the issues
looked like the conversion process may have corrupted the code since they
were obvious and never flagged before. For instance this line:

C_TEXT($procName)Partner_get_formInfo

That's a variable declaration followed by a method. No way that wasn't
caught before I thought.

I periodically dump text versions of methods from this database so I've got
copies to go back to. I found a copy of that method from 2015 with that
exact line of code in it which as been running since at least that time.

It wasn't all compiler declarations either. Some were simple grammatical
errors in a query string:

QUERY([PARTNERS]; & ; [PARTNERS]name_last=;$lastName;*)

Again, it's been there for years but the 16R compiler caught it.

I don't know what the overall impact of this means but it's a benefit for
me.

Re: Fixed: Re: v16 List Box Set Enterable not working?

2018-01-23 Thread Tilman Haerdle via 4D_Tech
The other thing that would need some clarification is the alternativ methode to
prevent a single cell from editing: The event On Before Data Entry.

There are several ways to reach a cell, either by tabbing or by clicking. What
I'm struggling with is how to determine which cell needs to be edited instead
of the blocked cell. Clicking more or less should lead to nothing, of course
any indication that the individual cell is locked would be nice. But then when
tabbing we can reach the cell from two directions which makes things more
complicated. This is manageable through keeping tabs on which cell the user
edited last but still imagining doing that work manually seems a bit off since
it is rather easy for 4D to provide something like a "next cell" information
given the tab order the cells are in and whether the user tabbed or
shift-tabbed into a locked cell.

You use OBJECT SET ENTERABLE to manage the enterability of the 'object'

To control the enterability of an individual cell you use the On Before

It may seem a bit odd to have an object method return a value but that's

Re: Wiki software: Confluence

2017-07-13 Thread Tilman Haerdle via 4D_Tech
David,

we at extragroup use Confluence for several years now and apart from
intermittent glitches we are very happy with it. It's our go to product for
internal and external documentation. We also use it to prepare meetings, do
brainstorming in a team and many other things.

We love the excellent full text search, the ability to control access rights by
user and its ease of use. It's great you can fav pages, comment, or watch
changes.

One of the big pluses for all the people who still need to distribute PDF-based
documents is that you can export complete spaces (a confluence wiki can consist
of several distinct sub wikis called spaces) as one big PDF dcoument with
pictures and all.

The manual of our 4D-based product profacto is published in Confluence:
http://profacto.extragroup.de:8090/display/handbuch/Module
The hierarchical sidebar makes it really easy to navigate content the user is
roughly familiar with.

In addition, we use JIRA. The Kanban view allows us to track our issues from
creation to release. Since we use JIRA consequently and track every improvement
and the rare :-) bug in profacto, product quality has dramatically improved.

I've tried a few different wiki packages down the years, sometimes setting
them up from scratch and sometimes using one someone else configured. At
the moment I'm using Atlassian's Confluence as set up by someone else.

It's great.

As I'm working along, figuring things out I can put down some notes to
refer back to. If I have to figure out some kind of algorithm that's new to
me (or long forgotten), I can write it up for others in a team setting.
(I've been doing a bunch of interval math lately which I thought I hated. I
don't hate it, I just didn't know where to look for the right information.)

I understand that a lot of people don't like writing and that it's a chore.
As I just heard it put from someone (in voice mail)

"Because I hate writing. Period."

Confluence (or similar) isn't the product for people in this camp ;-) But
if you do find it helpful to write things down in a place that you can find
them latter, I'm really pleased with Confluence.

A couple of notes:
* There are only a handful of styles and formatting options. A bit
frustrating for someone like me who misses character-level
stylesheets...but then you end up wasting very little time on formatting.
(At times, I make myself write in BBEdit so that I don't get caught up in
pointless tweaking too early.) After using Confluence's options for a few
days I stopped and noticed, 'Hey! Everything looks great!" They've saved me
from wasting time and from doing hideous things ;-)

* Overall, I've probably spent 30-45 minutes figuring out various features
and where options are. The hardest was figuring out where attachments are
organized. (There's a little paperclip symbol that's only visible when
you're not editing. A bit weird, but not a big deal.)

If anyone has used Confluence and/or anything else and wants to post some
comparisons (now or six months from now, I'll still be interested), please
do.

Re: tab seperated text - what to use for Cr

2017-03-15 Thread Tilman Haerdle via 4D_Tech
We normally export CRs as some kind of unique escape sequence (like "#13" or
so) that can be easily replaced by CRs in Excel.

That way the export data can be handled without problems in all systems that
allow for global search

I am trying to export some data to tab separated format.
it is possible that there are carriage returns in the data.
Is there a character (or combination) that I can use to replace the
return to get excel to automatically wrap the text into one cell?

Thanks
