[57north-discuss] Open Tuesday 21st December 2021

2021-12-21 Thread Tom Jones
Hello Hackers,

I plan to be in the hackerspace tonight trying to get one of those
multidimensional printers to create some shapes for me. I guess I'll be
in from about 7.

--

Now begins the important COVID information transmission, please pay
attention and be sure to comply in the space:

We are participating in the Scottish Government's contact tracing
programme. You will find purple posters at the entrance to the space and
around the space that contain QR codes. Please scan the QR code and provide
your contact details. If you are unable to scan a QR code, there is a link
to type into your browser. If you cannot use the link, ask someone else to
check in for you and provide them with your email address and phone number.

Please note that contact tracing is a requirement of participating in an
Open Tuesday in person, and is not negotiable. If you do not provide
tracing details you will be asked to leave.

As we emerge from this global disaster, some will understandably be
cautious about being in new spaces. Please respect people's boundaries by
maintaining social distancing and wearing a mask as you move around the
space. If you are sat down, you can take off your mask to have easier
access to your face if needed for eating or drinking. Use common sense and
remember this is a shared space.

As this event is open to the public, the wearing of a face covering while
"not seated, eating or drinking" is a LEGAL REQUIREMENT.

If you are in early, open windows to get air flowing through the space. It
could be a good idea to bring a jumper or something as the space could be a
little cooler than you might expect because of this.

DO NOT PAY ATTENTION TO THE MAN WATCHING US
HE HAS A LIST
HE IS ONLY CHECKING IT ONCE DUE TO COVID RESTRICTIONS

Hi Tony,

I think this would be a great thing for the space to do, espectially
considering the two ISP that are providing us service.

I think that we would need to run this by Isobel at AAOD though. This is
likely to be a substantial increase to the currect electricity bill. We
would also need to figure out how to rack these machine reasonably
securely.

This is an awesome donation.

Considering legality around being out and about I see no problem in any
of these being borrowed, especially if the non-working ones get repairs.

Make sure to send a note to someone if you do borrow a 3d printer.

Cool,

If you take it a part again please take pictures of everything. Ideally
both sides of boards. It is hard to get part numbers to show in pictures
so writing them down while the board is open can help.

Some times they are really hard to read, so a photo with light coming at
a particular angle can help and sometimes you have to try a range.

I think this board is quite large, I would suggest one front and back
and then the closest shots you can manage of all chips on the board.

Can you break into u-boot?

If you can get a u-boot prompt then you can probably dump the flash.
From u-boot, I don't see the normal 'press any key to interrupt boot'
message so you might be out of luck.

If you can share internals photos and a firmware image then we might be
able to manually flash any spi eeproms. Risky, but might be worth it.

Board games sound like something people might like.

I would say for any idea we try it once, but give it attnetion and
announcements, from the film night it was obvious that people don't know
when it is or what is planned. I think we have to accept that we managed
to trick people into remembering the friday mumbles and let them be what
they are now.

I do think adding an extra 'hackerspace' thing one week night a month
will be fine.

Six months of other ideas:

- openttd night
- 'how to oscilloscope workshop'/group learn
- group night making stuff in whatever that tile thing for rc3 was
- arduinos project club
- hardware hacking/re night (would need prep to share a target)
- minecraft night

[57north-discuss] Hackerspace virtual activities

2021-01-12 Thread Tom Jones
Hello Hackers,

It pretty clear to me that this cycle of lock up lock down is going to
continue for the next few years. Rather than dispersing slowly I think
we should make a deliberate effort to do at least one thing each month.

I don't know what we should do and I am not gong to organise all the
things, I think you as a member are a great source for ideas. Lets share
ideas for virtual things we can do and then figure out where there is
weight of interest to organise around.

Virtual meetings are going to be the mode, but we can arrange to have a
variety of different topics activities and forms for them. Once we
accept that we won't be in the space on Tuesdays we can start to figure
out fun and crazy ideas to implement.

I look forward to hearing your ideas and seeing what plans we can come
up with to make them happen.

that is a shame, can you not think of any uses for the hot air station?

I can't see what NEW capability this offers over the £5000+ of radios
already owned by the space membership.

There is already space in the hackerspace for a shack and it has radios
and can without too much hassle have antennas. What NEW capabilty does
this add?

I have been adjacent to a lot of radio this year and it is clear to me
that this offers anything new to what the space has other than it being
shiny.

I think that is a good idea, get pledges towards the total and ask the
hackerspace to cover any shortfall.

I don't think it is correct for the space to be the first in this
negotiation.

I don't see the new capability this offers to the hackerspace.

Of the previous two items we have bought (hot air station and oscilloscope)
we have frequently 'wanted' a usable scope, but been unable to access
consistent access. The hot air station was a bit of whim of mine, but I
have had great use out of the work one and it seemed like a good tool
for us to own.

Right now I think all of our radio curious members have a radio and a
spare they could lend to someone interested/the space.

I think this amount of money would be better directed to a more general
fabrication tool, or hand/power tools than a specific item few people
can use.

This radio might be a better group purchase similar to how we bought the
first two 3d printers.

[57north-discuss] [IN-PERSON] Hackerspace BBQ 18th July 2020

2020-07-10 Thread Tom Jones
Hello Hackers,

Some of us plan to take advantage of our lovely car park on Saturday the
18th July 2020 to have a socially distanced BBQ.

If you plan to come, we really do insist that you let us know. We need
accurate numbers so we have a good idea of how strong our precautions
need to be.

The BBQ will be in the rear car park and I imagine people will start to
show up mid afternoon. We do not plan to really use the hackerspace
apart from its toilet facilities.

The building currently has a 1-way system in place and all attendees
will be required to follow it (up the front, doon the back).

This BBQ will be a bring your own stuff event, things like:
- a bbq
- food
- alcohol
- shelter from the weather
- ppe
- banter

The building and the hackerspace will have hand sanitiser, but bringing
your own isn't an awful idea.

[57north-discuss] [REMOTE] Mumblin' Night - 19th May 2020

2020-05-19 Thread Tom Jones
Hello Hackers,

Today, again, we will meet in the depths of the internet to ramble about
ourselfs and if the moon is in the correct orientation maybe even some
technology.

We will meet on mumble.milliways.info again, some time between 1900 and
2000. If you need help getting in, please ask in irc.

--

I will be streaming some hardware hacking stuff with freebsd from 1800
for an hour or so, look here: twitch.tv/tjhacking

I don't expect to appear on mumble until 2000

We aren't going camping this month as planned, but we are still going to
put up tents. If you want the best 5 star ✪ advice on putting up a
tent in your own house, join us for a virtual campgndd (campgnd.com).

[57north-discuss] [REMOTE] Friday night chat

2020-05-14 Thread Tom Jones
Hello Hackers,

Tomorrow, as in most of the previous weeks we will be on mumble
chatting. I like to show up about 2000, but you are free to sit in the
mumble all day if you wish.

Find a client and point it at mumble.milliways.info

If you want you can spin up a jitsi too so you can look at people who
are more hopeful than the faces in the mirror. The consulate has a jitsi
you can use a rave.consulate.scot

If any of this is hard jump into irc and ask help. All this as stuff is
an absolute nightmare.

If you have spacetime in your brain then you should submit a session to
campGNDd(campgnd.com). This year we can't make your annual pilgrimage to

Join us at the end of the month and put a tent up in your living room.

I have low power car battery cutoffs[1], which probably aren't what you

Thanks for the clafification.

The mountain of crap from the mens shed hides a lot of the space we need
to cover. I am told that they will start moving this (or next week), but
they are also going to paint once then move has started (who knows why).

Once they have moved it will be clearer how much space we need to cover.

Shelves across the entire room is certainly overkill, but I think a
first section of shelves is a great idea.

[57north-discuss] Hackurday: Saturday 8th Feb 2020

2020-02-06 Thread Tom Jones
Hello Hackers,

I plan to be in the space this saturday from about mid afternoon,
hacking away at something. What? That depends a little on the postal
system, but I have some cheap logic analyser/scope boards that I need to
figure out how to use so they are on the list.

Will you join me?

I wasn't planning on coming in, but I might. Here is a poem either way:

Fair fa' your honest, sonsie face,
Great chieftain o' the pudding-race!
Aboon them a' ye tak your place,
  Painch, tripe, or thairm:
Weel are ye wordy o' a grace
  As lang's my arm.

The groaning trencher there ye fill,
Your hurdies like a distant hill,
Your pin wad help to mend a mill
  In time o' need,
While thro' your pores the dews distil
  Like amber bead.

His knife see rustic-labour dight,
An' cut you up wi' ready slight,
Trenching your gushing entrails bright
  Like onie ditch;
And then, O what a glorious sight,
  Warm-reekin, rich!

Then horn for horn they stretch an' strive,
Deil tak the hindmost, on they drive,
'Till a' their weel-swall'd kytes belyve
  Are bent like drums;
Then auld Guidman, maist like to rive,
  Bethankit hums.

Is there that o'er his French ragout,
Or olio that wad staw a sow,
Or fricassee wad mak her spew
  Wi' perfect sconner,
Looks down wi' sneering, scornfu' view
  On sic a dinner?

Poor devil! see him owre his trash,
As feckless as a wither'd rash,
His spindle shank a guid whip-lash,
  His nieve a nit;
Thro' bloody flood or field to dash,
  O how unfit!

But mark the rustic, haggis-fed,
The trembling earth resounds his tread,
Clap in his walie nieve a blade,
  He'll mak it whissle;
An' legs, an' arms, an' heads will sned,
  Like taps o' thrissle.

Ye pow'rs wha mak mankind your care,
And dish them out their bill o' fare,
Auld Scotland wants nae stinking ware
  That jaups in luggies;
But, if ye wish her gratefu' pray'r,
  Gie her a Haggis!

[57north-discuss] [aaronswartz...@protonmail.com: Aaron Swartz Day and International Hackathons!]

2019-10-14 Thread Tom Jones
- Forwarded message from Aaron Swartz Day
-

Date: Sun, 13 Oct 2019 23:22:44 +
From: Aaron Swartz Day
Cc: "aaronswartz...@protonmail.com"
Subject: Aaron Swartz Day and International Hackathons!

Dear Hackerspace Organizer:

Pleased to meet you. I'm Lisa Rein, a co-founder of Creative Commons, where I
worked with Aaron Swartz on its technical specification, back in 2002, when he
was 15 years old.

CC'd is Matt Arcidy, who is helping me get the word out to folks about this
year's hackathon :-)

I'm writing you on behalf of the Aaron Swartz Day & International Hackathon,
which takes place every year on what would have been Aaron's birthday. I
founded Aaron Swartz Day with Brewster Kahle, founder of the Internet Archive,
shortly after Aaron's death, in 2013.

Every year, we gather to celebrate Aaron, educate the world about his projects
that are still ongoing, such as SecureDrop and the Open Library, and
participate in an international hackathon where folks can contribute directly
to these projects and others.

We were wondering if you would be interested in having a hackathon in your
town, at your hackerspace. We can help you get speakers.

For more information about organizing one of our hackathons, see our
"Hackathons 101" page here:

https://www.aaronswartzday.org/hackathons-101/

One thing we are trying to do this year is to try to get as many hackathons as
possible going in the weeks leading up to our November 9th event.

Let us know if you might be interested. We're happy to answer any questions you
may have - and don't worry about taking up our time when you're not sure if you
have an event space yet. It's a process :)

ok! Thanks for considering having a hackathon in your town. :-)

Yours truly,

Lisa Rein and Matt Arcidy
