RE: [abcusers] skink, java and |
If there is no "|" available, perhaps you could use a substitute character (like a / or \ or ~) and do one "search and replace" at the end of your editing so you only have to worry about the "|" once? To subscribe/unsubscribe, point your browser to: http://www.tullochgorm.com/lists.html
RE: [abcusers] Make only lyrics and chords from abc?
The free programs at: http://world.std.com/~gdallal/UKE.HTM can produce the type output you mention. Just run the option that doesn't produce the ukulele chord diagrams. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Ulf Bro Sent: Sunday, December 12, 2004 10:20 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [abcusers] Make only lyrics and chords from abc? Hi, (please view this with a monospaced font) With the modern software available you can obviously print melody without lyrics, print one single voice out of a multivoice file etc. It normally should also be possible to use the same abc file to print out something like this: (1) good version: / / // || C / F / | C / / / | It's been a || hard day's | night and I've been | Bb / / / | C / / / | working like a | dog | (2) alternate version: CF C It's been a hard day's night and I've been Bb C Working like a dog Or some other format that a band can use when some of them say they don't necessarily need the notes (the bass player for example). Do you see the possibility of adding such a feature, or something like it to already existing software and have the result printed out as a PS file? ??? [abcusers] jaabc2ps question
I attempted to print instrument names associated with each voice as follows: V:1 name="Violin Obbligato" (abc code for voice 1 here) V:2 name="Chorale" (abc code for voice 2 here) V:3 name="Violin Harmony" (abc code for voice 3 here) I thought this format is supposed to print the name (Chorale for voice 2) in front to the first occurrence of that staff. Am I doing something incorrectly or have I misunderstood how the name= works? To subscribe/unsubscribe, point your browser to: http://www.tullochgorm.com/lists.html
RE: [abcusers] Recommendations for graphical entry software
Believe it or not, I do most of those things using the abc file format with a selection of abc tools: voices - V1, V2, etc. playback - ABCMus and others cut/paste/copy - pick an editor that supports it tablature - jaabc2ps and others key / time signatures - add as needed lyrics / fingering / chord symbols - add as needed print ps format - abc2ps, jaabc2ps and others. I use ghostwriter/viewer and convert to pdf format when needed MIDI input / output - midi2abc, abc2midi and others. This isn't as clean as I like since many like to add rests where not requested, but there may even be a solution for that file format conversions - pick as needed. There are several. Most of the above are simply small tools that work with abc format files (or produce them). Additional tools will surround multiple tools mentioned above and do those tasks when called upon in a GUI environment. Personally I just use the command line approach with the exception of ghostviewer when converting ps files to pdf files. Good luck. SpamPal works on Windows systems. It behaves as an e-mail server that gets between e-mail addresses and any Windows e-mail program in use. It ain't perfect, but can be configured to filter most spam. [abcusers] Indexing tunes with ABCMUS
I recently read about the ability to index tunes in one or more abc files using ABCMUS. Unfortunately, I have been unable to do so. Would some kind individual reply (maybe by private e-mail) with some simple directions about how to index the tunes contained in a single abc file. If I can get one done, multiple files should be easy from that point. I've attempted to output txt files and html files. The files are created, but with no tune information indexed. I used the columns after 72 for sequence numbers so I could use the sorter to put a deck of cards back in order if (when) I dropped them. Up to 72, I used for FORTRAN code. lol ... and on a good day I could get two or three runs at the school computer. [abcusers] abc format to chord chart
I'm looking for a simple program (DOS, Windows, JAVA, C, BASIC or FORTRAN - yeah right) that will take an abc format file and convert it to a chord chart while preserving the lyrics if they are included in the abc format file. Does such a program already exist? I did spot a perl script written by Anselm Lingnau a few years back that could certainly be transformed. RE: [abcusers] How to transpose abc to abc?
Sure does. Encore used to depend on the direction you were transposing to specifiy the key signature. Down would give you Db; up would give you C#. I just tried with with abc2abc and it gave Db both ways. You could use a text editor and change the key to C# instead of Db, but that isn't very elegant. Makes me wonder if the source code is out there. To subscribe/unsubscribe, point your browser to: http://www.tullochgorm.com/lists.html
RE: [abcusers] How to transpose abc to abc?
<>Is there an option/switch to transpose abc-files into abc-files?> I use abc2abc with -e to get rid of errors and -t with either a positive or negative number of half steps to transpose. If everything is OK I end it by redirecting the output to a file with >somefile.abc abc2abc input.abc -e -t n >output.abc To subscribe/unsubscribe, point your browser to: http://www.tullochgorm.com/lists.html
[abcusers] Chorus vs. Lyrics
I have tunes with multiple verses and one chorus. When I create notation, the space used for the chorus equals the space used for the verses, even though there is only one chorus. RE: [abcusers] ABC parser output data structure.
I'm definitely confused. I'll just keep reading and maybe I'll catch on to the goal. ABC is a text format and it seems like most things associated with ABC might fit better if text, but then again I don't exactly know what is being proposed. If it is to read ABC files and convert them to other formats for a variety of OS and software, seems like Java (stand-alone) would be something to consider. Isn't that software totally portable to other platforms? I'm back to the reading mode ... To subscribe/unsubscribe, point your browser to: http://www.tullochgorm.com/lists.html
RE: [abcusers] Copyright Issues ... One More Kick At The Can
<...they can wind up hurting the public rather than providing a benefit.> Therein lies the crux of the matter. The only one ever benefiting (at least with the exception of "maybe" 10% or so) is ASCAP or RIAA or whoever owns the rights to the work. They try to make certain that "artist" is in their title, but it is all about how much money "THEY" can make. Note how much artists in the 40s and 50s --perhaps even 60s -- made. Most are broke. All expenses are usually the responsibility of the artists. The agencies, though, get their amounts off the top. They are powerful, have plenty of connections with elected officials and keep "public domain" as meaningless as possible. (a few bars of "Slip sliding away" please.) RE: [abcusers] Copyright Issues ... Socks and America Bashing
I love America too -- especially the ability to comment, from time to time, that everything isn't perfect AND that a few items might want to be closely watched. ABC is a format used to notate tunes. Would it come as a surprise if a few of those corporations with their own agendas attempted to only allow public domain tunes (if they haven't been able to place those under their control) to be so notated? I know they have already attempted this with midi files. To subscribe/unsubscribe, point your browser to: http://www.tullochgorm.com/lists.html

RE: [abcusers] is there an ABC bluegrass archive?
There are several bluegrass tune archives. We use many of the same tunes for our mountain (or lap) dulcimer group -- we just play softer. You can check out: http://www.everythingdulcimer.com/tab The tab might not do you a lot of good (unless it shows the chords) but (I think) the majority of the music shows notes. RE: [abcusers] is there an ABC bluegrass archive?
Learn the 1, 4 and 5 chords for the keys of D, G and A. Practice them. ... and just guess along where to put what. Play relatively softly (you really have no worries - an autoharp in with banjos, guitars, fiddles, etc.?) HAVE FUN. It's a hoot. If they ask you want you want to play, say something like, "Um, let me see, 'Will the Circle Be Unbroken.'" To subscribe/unsubscribe, point your browser to: http://www.tullochgorm.com/lists.html
