[AI] Announcing Filedir 1.0
FileDir 1.0 Released January 1, 2007 FileDir, a file and directory manager, is intended to be a generally superior alternative to Windows Explorer or My Computer for managing a computer file system in an efficient, accessible manner. It is particularly designed to optimize productivity by users of the JAWS or Window-Eyes screen readers. Familiar features of Windows Explorer are replicated for starting functionality and ease of learning. FileDir then adds much in power and convenience. Developed in the C# language, the FileDir application requires the .NET Framework 2.0 to run. This is a free Microsoft download from www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=0856eacb-4362-4b0d-8edd-aab15c5e04f5amp;displaylang=en FileDir features include the following: * Open any number of directory views in a standard Multiple Document Interface (MDI), where Control+Tab cycles among open windows and Control+F4 closes one. F4 also lets you pick from a list of those currently open. * A standard ListBox rather than ListView control is used to display files and subfolders, so the interface is more streamlined and responsive then Windows Explorer. * With single, mnemonic keystrokes, start verbalizing a file or inspect its size, date, or other attributes. * Tag files or folders in various ways. Unlike selection in Windows Explorer, an accidental change of focus in the list does not affect the set of tagged items, and the Control key does not have to be held down to preserve tags while navigating. * Via speech, list all files in the current folder, or just the tagged ones -- regardless of how many are visible on the screen. * Zip and unzip files, or navigate within a ZIP archive with the same interface as regular folders. * Convert various file formats to plain text, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe PDF, Windows Help, Rich Text Format, and HTML. * Capture the full path of a file or set of files to the clipboard for convenient pasting into dialogs of other applications. * Combine multiple files into a single compound document. * Filter files in the current folder based on a wild card specification. * Jump to a file in the current folder based on part of its name or words in its body. Multiple keyword terms are possible, where a match may require either all terms or any one of them. * Navigate among the subset of tagged files, e.g, going to the next tagged file, skipping over untagged ones. * Go quickly to another drive, arriving in the folder and on the file that last had focus there. * Create a shortcut to any file or folder, and invoke a list of them with a single key. * Start an email message with the textual content of a file as its body, or start a message with one or more tagged files as attachments. * Burn files onto a CD. The number of FileDir commands exceeds 100. Each is available by either menu selection or hot key. If you have trouble remembering the menu or key associated with a command, try the Alternate Menu command, Alt+F10, which lets you pick from a single, alphabetized list of all commands in a standard list box. All commands are discussed in sections of the documentation organized by conceptual category. The documentation is automatically displayed at the end of installation, and may be reopened by pressing F1 in the program. Alt+Shift+H displays a summary of hot keys. This is the official, 1.0 release of FileDir, after several rounds of public beta testing and feedback. Send free SMS to your Friends on Mobile from your Yahoo! Messenger. [AI] Problem with Excel
Hello members, First of all I wish you a very happy new year. I am facing a problem with Excel. The JAWS doesn't announce the cell reference properly. Say, if I am moving my curser from A3 to A4, first it announces the cell number that is 4, then the contents and finally the cell reference or if I move the curser from A3 to B3, it will say as B, then cell reference and finally B3, because of this problem, I Often get confused between the actual number and the cell reference. Please send me if you have any solution for this problem. I would also like to know whether there is any method where I can make JAWS to speak the contents of a cell without actually moving the curser to that particular cell. I am using Office XP with JAWS 7.0. Thanks in advance Waiting for your reply. Re: [AI] PLS HELP ME TO FIND A RELIGIOUS WEB
Raj and list. Let me start by congratulating you all for successfully reaching 2007. Hope this year proves to be a fulfiller of all your dreams, ambitions, desires and wishes. For myself I don't believe in the newness of the years. Daykhiyay paatay hain ushaaq buton say kya faiz Ek baraahman ne kaha hai Ye saal atcha hai. Raj. Coming to your mail. Roughly speaking Hinduism is an umbrella term for various religious beliefs and practices which have their foundation in pre-Buddha and pre-jain India. Rather than restricting your search to Ramayana and Geeta, I would advise you to look for texts in Sanatana tradition. I can send you translation of some of the Upanishads if you think you won't mind reading them on your computer. I can also try to find you audio version of Geeta for download, but all that is Sanskrit. Contact me off list for more discussion on that. No. You don't have to pay a penny extra to ETS for GRE and TOEFL, I am not sure about GMat though. And you get 50 to 100 % extra time. - Original Message - From: pamnani [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Sent: Monday, December 18, 2006 6:17 AM Subject: Re: [AI] Writer Vetri, Dont forget this is India and that too a state and we are talking of all kinds of exams. To get this far it has taken so long. We can fine tune these guidelines in future. For eg. How will the exams be conducted on the computer - the actual modalities will be the subject of another matter in the future. Forget audio, large print etc the last 2 months experience in Maharashtra has been that candidates were not allowed to write the exam if they had a writer. Many years ago when I gave the GRE and GMAT I had been given all the facilities suggested by you. If I remember correctly I had to pay extra for the exams- dont remember for sure. However it would not cover the cost of the materials sent. Therefore lets be practical and get as much as we can in the case of a traditional writer and build the ground work for the use of a computer. Of course one minus point of writing examination papers in Braille may be difficulty in re-evaluation of the papers--may be in rare cases--as we have very few experts to decide a person's ability in any given subject. It is also difficult to prove the sighted world I mean, the Education Department which ultimately certifies a blind person in 10th and 12th Exams. I think this option of writing public exams in Braille can be eliminated. Let me tell you that I am an avid reader of Braille books and magazines. I have mentioned only some technical difficulties and their consequences which have to be overcome. thanks, To unsubscribe send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the subject unsubscribe. [AI] access news from US:
A new settlement of a federal lawsuit promises to bring sweeping changes to Suffolk's public transportation system to accommodate disabled riders, attorneys said this week. Nassau/Suffolk Law Services in 2004 sued the county's department of public works, which operates Suffolk County Transit, in federal court on behalf of eight people with disabilities. A year earlier, the group filed a formal complaint with the U.S. Department of Transportation alleging the county's bus routes did not comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act, mandating that all buses have operational lifts for disabled riders and that bus stops be announced for visually-impaired passengers. The problems persisted for several years, despite repeated complaints by disabled commuters and advocacy groups, attorneys said Friday. The lawsuit further stated that Suffolk County Accessible Transportation, the county's paratransit system that provides door-to-door bus services for disabled riders by appointment, was plagued with problems and federal violations, including riders unable to book trips within 24 hours. Suffolk officials say the system provides more than 230,000 trips a year. The court-ordered settlement calls for the county to purchase 59 new fixed-route buses and to complete the installation of a fully automated stop announcement system in all bus routes by 2008. The county has 162 buses in its fleet, including most of the new buses mandated by the settlement. New buses also will be added to the paratransit system, which has 81 vehicles. The county will also completely revamp its paratransit reservation system. The settlement also requires the county to provide alternative transportation for passengers when bus lifts are not working or when they miss stops that are not announced. Law services attorney Robert Briglio said the settlement was very substantial and a groundbreaking victory for the disabled, who struggle with inadequate public transportation systems throughout the country. Briglio noted that the county showed good faith by agreeing to changes not mandated by federal law, such as more comprehensive training, monitoring and disciplinary measures for transit employees. I'm happy that we settled it finally, said plaintiff Frank Perino, of Islip, who is visually impaired. But I'm certainly not happy that it took several years to do it and that we had to do all this to get them to comply with the simple regulations that they should have been complying with. Deputy county attorney Gail Lolis said the settlement was something we're very comfortable with and added that, regardless of the settlement, the county planned implementing many of the improvements. It's good for the county and it's certainly good for our disabled residents, she said. To unsubscribe send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the subject unsubscribe. Re: [AI] Problem with Excel
Hi Vishal, I had a similar problem in Excel. All you have to do is 1. Do insert plus S and set the mode to highlighted or none. The problem happens when it is on the all mode. 2. open the adjust jaws verbosity drop down by pressing insert V 3. the first option in the list will be cell verbosity. If it is selected to contents plus co-ordinates leave it as it is. If it is on any other option, press spacebar till you come to this option You can now work on Excel to your heart's content! To control the verbosity in Excel you need to see what works for you by manipulating the options in insert S and insert v. For example, if you prefer to have Jaws read the cell co-ordinates before the contents, that is possible too. Hope this is useful. Re: [AI] access news from US:
Dear Veera Kumar, Thanks alot for letting me know this update. Being a regular user of public transportation in US, I had several difficulties that you cited in this message. I really appreciate your effort for sending this article to list members. Thank You, SATHIYAPRAKASH. B.V. [EMAIL PROTECTED] 1/2/2007 9:22:34 AM A new settlement of a federal lawsuit promises to bring sweeping changes to Suffolk's public transportation system to accommodate disabled riders, attorneys said this week. [AI] New 2 RS. coin inaccessable
Hello The government has introduced new stainless steel Rs.2 coins rescently. The edges of the earlier 2 rupee coins had a wavy edge fascilitating easy detection of the rupee 1 coin from the rupee 2 ones by the blind. The new coins are having rounded edges like the rupee 1 coin. I would urge all organisations for the disabled protest against it and ask for its withdrawal. Re: [AI] New 2 RS. coin inaccessable
Yes, the needless inaccessibility of new rupee two coins ought to be vehemently protested. As far as letters to editors are concerned, I have observed that newspapers have virtually stopped paying any heed to any disability related news or opinions. case of recently adopted international convention for the protection and rights and dignity of persons with disability is obvious. No print media barring a few editions of a few cared about it. My repeated letter to the Hindu and its readers' editor are gathering dust to this day. Do write and let me know if any letters to editors about this issue are published. I think it would be a nice practice to post the published copies of letters/complaints about various disability related issues to this list as well. Initially, Hindu did publish a few letters of mine about various issueds including disability. At least Subramani may highlight the matter in his deccan herald! Re: [AI] New 2 RS. coin inaccessable
Dear Friends, There is no doubt that the differing shapes and sizes of the currency coins and notes has made it easier for VH people to identify them. It has greatly contributed to our self configence and ability to conduct monetary transactions independently. This move to make the Rupee 2 coins similar to the 1 Rupee coins will make it difficult, if not impossible for VH to distinguish between the two. So, I agree with the people who have posted on this topic that we should make the Government aware of this issue at the initial stages. But the question I want answered is how do we go about making our protest heard. Doubtless, our friends in NAB and RBI are in a position to oppose these new coins and will do so. But how can the other members participate in opposing these new coins? Is theere an email Id or postal address where we can send our complaints? Or is there any other means by which we can participate and help our NAB friends in opposing these new coins? Regards Sameer Latey Mumbai, India. [AI] Tips on how to become a CEO, quickly
Tips on how to become a CEO, quickly Michael Rubin started his business career at age 13, running a ski-tuning shop out of his parents' basement. He went on to open several retail ski shops in New York and Pennsylvania by the time he graduated from high school. Now 34, Rubin is chief executive of GSI Commerce, a King of Prussia (Pa.)-based e-commerce company with $524.6 million in revenue in the 12 months ended Sept. 30. More public-company CEOs age 40 and under lead organizations involved in technology products or services than work in any other industry. These companies range from online travel publisher Travelzoo to semiconductor materials provider Cree and software maker Borland. A tech background can also help executives in related businesses, such as retail. Michael Soenen, 36-year-old chief of flower seller FTD, recalls becoming CEO of his company's Web division in 1999. Internet CEOs were young by nature, and the success we were having made me a logical choice, Soenen explains. Having run that business successfully, becoming CEO of FTD Inc. was a natural extension for me. List of 2 items • The Dharma Dons • Best Cars for CEOs list end Many of the youngest CEOs achieved their position by launching their own companies from scratch. If you really want to be a CEO at a young age, start a company and call yourself a CEO, says David Liu, who recently turned 41 but has been CEO of wedding information Web site The Knot since age 30. Experience Can't Hurt Sometimes the hardest part may just be getting started. You can't wait until you know all the answers, says 36-year-old Taser International CEO Rick Smith, who started his stun-gun operation in a garage at age 23. You never will. When your gut tells you there's an opportunity there, you have to take it. Others suggest seeking out a broad range of experiences en route to the corner office. Jonathan Huberman, now 41, became CEO of Zip-disk storage device maker Iomega earlier this year at age 40, following stints in tech, management consulting, venture capital, and hedge funds. Look for diversity of experiences, because to be a CEO you need to be able to understand and set strategy for every facet of the business, Huberman says. While it's never easy to be a CEO, for those 40 and under it can be even more challenging. It changes your life top to bottom, says Jordan Greenhall, 35-year-old chief of digital video compression software maker DivX. Not as much as having children, but in that same zone. Ready for Risk And like having children, CEOs typically say the job is worth any sleepless nights. I have to say I really love it, says Michael Chasen, 35-year-old head of school software developer Blackboard. I thrive on the fast pace and excitement in running a fast-growth, successful company. The people who become CEO at a young age are increasingly unafraid to take risks, notes Peter Cappelli, a management professor at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School. They're willing to look for opportunities to stand out, Cappelli explains. Still, he cautions that bigger appetites for risk may have unwanted consequences, citing the Enron scandal. Today's young CEOs are likely to have a better understanding of technology and globalization than did the bright up-and-comers of decades past, adds Michael Feiner, a management professor at Columbia University Graduate School of Business and author of The Feiner Points of Leadership. The biggest challenge is the leading-people piece, Feiner says. It takes a while for even really smart CEOs to understand it's people first, strategy second. That comes from experience and mistakes, and I don't think there's a shortcut. Passion Projects Meanwhile, new CEOs are taking on the mantle at a time of unprecedented turnover. Corner-office job changes this year are on pace to top last

Re: [AI] New 2 RS. coin inaccessable
All the members to which ever organizations they belong should try to impress upon their organizations to write to the Government and also give in the press. It may have some impact. regards Mittal. - Original Message - From: sameer latey [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Sent: Wednesday, January 03, 2007 11:06 AM Subject: Re: [AI] New 2 RS. coin inaccessable Dear Friends, There is no doubt that the differing shapes and sizes of the currency coins and notes has made it easier for VH people to identify them. Individuals too should highlight in the letter to editor columns of different dailies. Harish. To unsubscribe send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the subject unsubscribe. Re: [AI] Problem with Excel
Hello Pranav Lal sir, I am using Office XP and I am talking about a normal Excel sheet. As per my experience JAWS first reads the contents of the cell and then the cell reference. I am able to solve this problem by changing the screen echo to nun as suggested by Hari sir,but I am able to work on other computers without changing the Screen echo to nun. The other thing is I want JAWS to read the contents of a cell without actually moving the curser to that cell is to increase my speed in solving problems. the question is written in a cell and I need to post the entries in some other cell, it becomes a very tedious job to go to the question and come back to post them every time, instead if I can read the question without going to the cell, I can do the work much faster. Please let me know if there is any solution for this. Thank you. Also, what kind of spreadsheets are you looking at? Usually, jaws announces the cell reference first and then announces the cell contents. As for reading a cell without moving to it, why do you want to do this? You can perhaps look at setting up monitor sells.
