Re: [AI] Accessible MP3 with recording facility
Hello, I am using Transcend TSonic 610 mp3 player for a year and it's accessible. Perhaps TSonic 650 is the latest model. I am not sure whether it is accesssible. Whatever the model, you will need sighted help first to recognise the buttons, then you can read the manual supplied in the accompanying cd. I can't delete the files without plugging it to my pc. Otherwise I can record and play mp3 files alone. I can also use the fm radio comfortably. Remember that the recording is in .wav format, it plays .mp3 and .wma file though. Best regards, Amiyo. [AI] jaws question again!
Hello Access Indians! I am trying to log in to a java based network through IE 6 using jaws, but can not reach to desired edit fields of user name and password, though, With the help of jaws curser, I am able to locate both edit fields. Now, My question is what should I do to give input in those edit boxes? I think as long as jaws curser is active, it is not possible to type anything in those edit boxes. I have tried out numpad insert-plus and and HITTING INSERT-PLUS KEY twice QUICKLY TO TAKE PC and virtual curser to jaws curser, but it takes me to another part of the screen. secondly, Apart from hitting enter on an edit box, is there any other way to turn the form mode on? Try the following: Point the jaws cursor onto the text field to which you want to give focus. press the num pad / to simulate the left mouse button. The '/' key is just right of the num pad lock key When you will press it jaws will say left click. the key to the right of it ( num pad *) is the key for right mouse button. [AI] SAML (Security Assertion Markup Language)
SAML (Security Assertion Markup Language) Dosed by Swapna K M – M E Team (from MphasiS Software Services) What is an SAML ? SAML is an XML based framework for communicating user authentication, authorization, entitlement and attribute information. SAML defines XML-based assertions and protocols, bindings, and profiles. SAML protocol refers to what is transmitted, not how (the latter is determined by the choice of binding). So SAML Core defines bare SAML assertions along with SAML request and response elements. Three types of statements are provided by SAML: Authentication statements, Attribute statements and Authorization decision statements. Why is SAML required? 1. Limitations of Browser cookies Most existing Single-Sign On products use browser cookies to maintain state so that re-authentication is not required. Browser cookies are not transferred between DNS domains. So, if you obtain a cookie from www.abc.com, then that cookie will not be sent in any HTTP messages to www.xyz.com. This could even apply within an organization that has separate DNS domains. Therefore, to solve the Cross-Domain SSO (CDSSO) problem requires the application of different technology. All SSO products solve the CDSSO problem by different techniques. 2. SSO Interoperability How products implement SSO and CDSSO are completely proprietary. If you are an organization and you want to perform SSO across different DNS domains within the same organization or you want to perform CDSSO to trading partners, then you will have to use the same SSO product in all the domains. 3. Web Services Security within Web Services is still being defined. Most of the focus has been on how to provide confidentiality and authentication/integrity services on an end-to-end basis. The SAML standard provides the means by which authentication and authorization assertions can exchanged between communicating parties. 4. Federation The need to simplify identity management across organizational boundaries, allowing users to consolidate many local identities into a single (or at least a reduced set) Federated Identity. How does it work? 1. End user's browser accesses authentication server, and authentication server asks for user ID and password. 2. End user enters ID and password. Authentication server checks with LDAP directory and then authenticates end user. 3. End user requests a resource from destination/Web services server. Authentication server opens a session with destination server. 4. Authentication server sends uniform resource identifier (URI) to end user. End user browser is redirected to URI, which connects end user to Web service. Alright, let's sort this one out. When you minimise, maximise, move or resize any window, by default your PC will create some sort of a visual animation, letting a sighted person to actually experience the visual sensation on the screen which might look too dull and monotonous, otherwise. Disabling these visual effects would mean giving up of having a cool, funky, and very elegant screen to a lesser extent on one hand, but it would also mean more system stability, speed and good performance. If you adjust your computer for best performance, the computer will automatically disable the visual effects. I have done this on my desktop computer, and have increased the speed considerably. This is a registry hack, so be careful. IE's default settings only permit two downloads at the same time. Updating the download settings will permit downloading up to 16 files concurrently from the same server. Method - Open a command prompt and type 'Regedit'. Find the following registry key ~ HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings Right click the right pane and select New-DWORD Value. Type MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server and give it a value of 16. Add another DWORD using the same process - call it MaxConnectionsPerServer with the same value - 16. Step 2: Disable Windows indexing service. The indexing feature consumes system resources, and may degrade system performance. By disabling this feature, disk space is speeded up and performance is improved. Method - Goto Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Services. Find the Indexing Service, right click and select Disable. Step 3: Resize the IE cache setting. The default cache settings of IE are configured to hold a large number of cached temporary Internet files. However, storing many small files on the hard disk consumes valuable disk space and can cause disk fragmentation. Reduce the maximum size of IE cache to 128MB for optimal performance. Method - Start Internet Explorer, Select Tools - Internet Options -General. Under Temporary Internet Files click the Settings button and type the amount of disk space to use. Step 4: Increase Windows menu display Speed. Menus are displayed on the computer according to Windows' default settings. By optimizing these settings, the computer's speed in displaying (or hiding) these menus is increased. Method - Goto Start - Control Panel - System. Click the Advanced tab, and under Performance, click the Settings button. Clear the Fade or slide menus into view check box, and then click OK. [AI] Good News for Disabled employees working in banks
Hi friends, You may recollect that somewhere in October 2007, the Government of India issued a circular to grant 10 day special casual leave to disabled employees to attend conferences, seminars, conventions etc. On the same line, the Ministry of Finance, Banking Division, had issued a circular to grant special casual leaves for the disabled employees. I have been following this matter ith Indian Banks' Association and have received a reply from hief Advisor-Personnel (IBA) G.Ssankaranarayanan, in this behalf giving the aforesaid information. This notification was issued on 21st May, 2008 and the ref. no is F.No. 3/1/2008 SCt(B) (Ministry of Finance, Banking Division) Can anybody proure the copy of the circular from the Ministry and post it on the list ? Re: [AI] Accessible MP3 with recording facility
- Original Message - From: Shiv To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Sent: Tuesday, June 26, 2007 3:46 PM Subject: Creative Zen Stone Creative Zen Stone Creative Zen Stone The Zen Stone from Creative is a small, light weight, affordable player, ideal for blind people since it has no screen. It is available at the time of writing from many retailers and on-line stores, and the price is approximately 25 pounds or 40 US dollars. Description of the Zen stone The Zen Stone weighs 0.55 ounces, and measures 2.1 inches x 1.4 inches x 0.5 inches. On the front face can be found a wheel now associated with many similar devices. Holding down the button within the centre of the wheel for a second, and then releasing it, represents Power On/Off or Stop/Power Off. Pressing the key lightly is the Pause/Resume Play control. Pressing the right-hand side of the wheel skips to the next track or when held down continually skips forward within a track. Pressing the left-hand side of the wheel (or holding it down continually) moves in the opposite direction. The up and down sections increase or decrease the volume level. The final three items on the unit consist of the Headphone jack, the USB2 socket and the Mode slide Switch. In addition to possessing its own features, the Mode switch deal with the behaviour of the left and right sides of the wheel. If you slide the Mode switch to the position farthest from the headphone jack, the playing order is shuffled. In the middle position, all tracks play in order and then repeat. If you push the switch toward the headphone jack and release it quickly, you skip to the first file in the next folder. If you're playing an Audible book and push the switch toward the headphone jack, hold it a couple of seconds, and then release, Forward and Back move you between sections in the book. Useful Information The Zen Stone can accommodate up to 1 GB of storage. The great thing about this player is that no special software is required to transfer regular WMA or MP3 files to it. The device is able to be used on any number of machines so there is no special activation forming a relationship between itself and a specific number of computers. You can simply copy and paste MP3 and WMA files using Windows Explorer. However, there is software which can be downloaded called Creative Media Lite, which allows you to not only rip tracks from audio CD, but in addition once the audio extraction has taken place, the music is automatically transferred to the player. So for a person who does not want to get into the business of copying music to the player, this could be very good. When connected to the computer for charging, Creative Media Lite will advise you how much space is available on the player together with the battery charge status. The software is also used to update the firmware of the unit. Free scripts for JAWS for Windows are available from this page containing the following functionality: List of 8 items . Most of the buttons speak their names as you use Tab, Shift+Tab or Insert+Tab. There is still a bit of work to be done in the Settings Dialog of the CD ripper as the fields do not speak correctly but this will come in time. . When you Tab into the main drive list or the Zen player contents list, the individual list is identified. . F12 activates the Audio CD rip Button. . Usefully, you can now check or uncheck the songs to be extracted from a CD from the list by pressing Space Bar. JAWS will announce if the song is checked or unchecked. . ALT+Control+V will allow you to set the maximum volume of the player and access the parental controls. . ALT+Control+U enables updates to be accessed via the Internet. . F11 tells you the charge of the player and the amount of free space. . A small amount of Hotkey Help is available. list end It is hoped that Window-Eyes Set Files will be made available from this page shortly. Now to the final great feature. This player will allow you to play DRM Windows Media files and Audible content. When playing Audible content (Formats 2 and 3 only), and you stop playing the book and move to another folder, your position within the book is retained! I think that the storage capacity of the player, and the fact that the quality of format 3 is quite listenable, makes the use of this format acceptable. Summary If you want something really simple on which to listen to music, podcasts and particularly Audible books, this is a very inexpensive option. Because the unit is capable of playing music in the DRM (digital Rights Management) format, downloading music from supported web sites and listening to it is very achievable. The unit will not at this time function with files obtained from downloadable music subscription services. You can use Windows Explorer to copy and organise folders up to three deep, meaning that you can organise your folder structure into an artists/album format. However, the free Creative Media Lite software

The highly anticipated program, which runs in conjunction with the Mozilla Firefox browser, will be offered at no charge and is expected to be available to the public for download via the Firefox add-on site in late summer or early fall of 2008. [forwarder's note: as of this posting, LowBrowse is not yet available, but will be available from https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/ when it is released.] LowBrowseT is part of a larger research project on low vision user interface design headed by Aries Arditi PhD, Senior Fellow in Vision Science at Lighthouse International, under a grant from the National Eye Institute. This technology enables all the text on a website to be presented in the same readable format - size, color, font and spacing - regardless of which page is being viewed and without having to navigate to the next line, said Arditi, a vision scientist and an expert in web accessibility. Dr. Arditi, who is the current president of the International Society of Low-Vision Research and Rehabilitation, has written more than 80 scientific publications about vision and is the author of Lighthouse International's popular Color Contrast and Making Text Legible publications (available at www.lighthouse.org). Arditi vision and an added, LowBrowseT emphasizes efficiency and accessibility for the unique needs of people with vision loss. This system further democratizes the Internet and empowers millions of people with low vision. LowBrowseT is important and useful for many reasons: * Users spend a few moments configuring their preferences (using a very simple procedure) for font, text size, color contrast and letter spacing. Once the configuration is set, no further adjustments will be needed on any web pages - including pages with photos and graphics. * LowBrowseT makes searching and skimming web pages for specific information much easier than other accessible software. * Semantic text features such as link color, italics and boldface are preserved in the special reading frame. * Users can easily enlarge images simply by holding down a button and wiggling the mouse. * Users with severe low vision can use LowBrowse'sT speech capability. * Users can simultaneously view the web page as the web author intended it to be viewed and access the text (in a separate reading frame), enabling visually-impaired users to appreciate the very same view of the page that able-sighted users see. * The program performs these functions in a consistent manner for all pages on all websites. * The program is very user-friendly, with few commands, making it perfect for computer novices as well as tech-savvy users. * The program is portable and can be installed in seconds on a flash drive and downloaded from anywhere. * The program will eventually be available in multiple languages /q -- You cannot depend on your eyes when your imagination is out of focus. -- Mark Twain -- Gregory J. Disabling these visual effects would mean giving up of having a cool, funky, and very elegant screen to a lesser extent on one hand, but it would also mean more system stability, speed and good performance. [AI] COMPUTERS TO REDUCE GAP BETWEEN ABLE DISABLED
COMPUTERS TO REDUCE GAP BETWEEN ABLE DISABLED Efforts are underway to come up with a more user friendly computer that responds to physically challenged individuals. Current designs are particularly frustrating for the disabled, the elderly and anybody who had trouble with a mouse. A new approach developed by Washington University researchers would put each person through a brief skills test and generate a mathematically based version of the user interface optimized for his or her vision and motor abilities. Assistive technologies are built on the assumption that its the people who have to adapt to the technology. We tried to reverse this assumption, and make the software adapt to people, said the studys co-author. Tests showed the system closed the performance gap between disabled and able bodied users by 62 percent and disabled users strongly preferred the automatically generated inter faces. This shows that automatically generating personalized interfaces really do work, and the technology is ready for prime time, the author said. The system called supple begins with a one-time assessment of a persons mouse pointing, dragging and clicking skills. A ring of dots appears on the screen and as each dot lights up the user must quickly click on it. The task is repeated with different sized dots. Other prompts ask the participant to click and drag, select from a list and click repeatedly on one spot. Participants can move the cursor using any type of device. The test takes about 20 minutes for an able bodied person or up to 90 minutes for a person with motor disabilities. Researchers tested the system last summer on six able-bodied people and 11 people with motor impairments. The resulting interfaces showed one size definitely did not fit all. A man with severe cerebral palsy used his chin to control a trackball and could move the pointer quickly but spastically. Based on his skills test, supple generated a user interface where all the targets were bigger than normal, and lists were expanded to minimize scrolling., In contrast, a woman with muscular dystrophy who participated in the study used both hands to move a mouse. She could make very precise movements but moved the cursor very slowly and with great effort because of weak muscles. Based on her results, supple automatically generated an interface with small buttons and a compressed layout. Re: [AI] jaws question again!
Hi, Why not use INSERT+F5 to open the Forms Controls dialog box. Selecting a control from the list of controls and hitting the ENTER key takes you to the selected control as well as turns Forms Mode ON. Hope this works as desired...
