[AI] Looking some one in Satara!
Dear list members, Greetings from Eyeway! Would appreciate if some one from Satara Maharashtra can revert back to us. One of our caller Mr. Uday Siddheshwar Dhumal, is willing to learn computer. Mr. Uday has done his B.comm. and LLB general and working as a telephone operator in district hospital Satara. He does not have even the basic knowledge of computer so needs to start from the beginning. We believe that the work he is doing is not as per his qualification so we tried to motivate him to resume his studies and complete his LLB for which he says it is necessary to learn computer. Hoping for a quick response. With best regards, Satguru Rathi | Trainee Counselor, Project Eyeway - A comprehensive information helpdesk for living a fuller life with blindness. C/o Score Foundation. [AI] Open Your Eyes, Please Read this
Hello list members, This posting contains a short journey of a campaign called Open Your Eyes, which has been very instrumental in spreading the awareness related to the VI community in Symbiosis Centre for Management Studies Under Graduate ( SCMSUG), Pune, the BBA constituent of Symbiosis International University and has also led to the development of facilities for the VI students in the college. This campaign was started by 6 students of our college SCMSUG namely Nalin Agarwal (T Y BBA), Sameer Dixit (T Y BBA), Jay Thanki (S Y BBA), Sagar Jain (S Y BBA), Tausif Iqbal(S Y BBA), and Abdul Razique Khan (F Y BBA). We are sharing our experiences of past 1 year, be it a failure or success, and thus would like everyone to read this posting, especially the students who are currenly pursuing courses in any institution. 19th July,2008, Youth Activism Day- It all started off from here. Youth activism day was celebrated in the form of a competition in our college. In this competition, the participants were supposed to give a presentation on any social issue, in front of the judges and carry out a campaign with the help of posters and banners in the college campus to make the students aware on that issue. The students also had to come up with a solution which can be carried out at a college level to resolve the issue. It was then that we formed a group and named our campaign as Open Your Eyes. We gave a presentation which was based on the following topics, (i) Hindrances faced in the society by the VI community, (ii) Accessibility issues in front of the visually challenged, (iii) Assistive Technologies: A solution to accessibility issues, (iv) Steps to be taken by the college authority to resolve this issue at a college level. The presentation was backed up by two specially shot videos which created a lot of impact on the judges and audience. The first three parts of the presentation are self explainatory. The main highlight of this presentation was the last part wherein we proposed the management of our college to provide the necessary support system to the visually challenged students of the college. This suggestion was presented in the form of a well documented proposal in which we presented XRCVC, a resource centre for visually challenged successfully operating in ST. Xaviers college, Mumbai as an example. The proposal was accepted immediately by the Head- SCMSUG, Dr. Bhama Venkatramani and all the faculty members. This itself was a win for us. But there was more to come our way, as we were also judged to be the winners of the college event. This was not the beginning, instead, everything had just started. Our team had two well defined objectives now, (i) Spreading the awareness and (ii) Development of support system for visually challenged students in the college. Taking these two objectives in mind, we carried our campaign forward in the form of various programmes and events, which are described as under: 19 1.. th September, 2008- Presentation in the inter college fest- Illuminaire 2008: We gave a similar type of presentation as before in front of the students of various colleges in the Inter college fest- Illuminaire, 2008 to create awareness amongst them. The fest also saw the presence of Mr. V.S. Kumar, commissioner of Income Tax, Pune. We made them realize that a visually challenged student can compete against their counter parts in all fields. Its just that they need the availability of necessary support system to perform their tasks. This presentation was almost the same as the previous one but it had all the ingredients which could inspire and sensetise the students. This was the first type of awareness programme in this level and we are looking forward for more, in the near future. 21st September, 2008- Presentation in the 2nd Access India Convention, Ahmedabad: This was the first time we moved out of our college with our campaign. We, as representatives of SCMSUG, went to the Access India Convention to give a presentation on Inclusive Education ( inclusion of students from all societies in regular schools and colleges). Another purpose to participate in this convention was to gain knowledge about the latest technologies and get the first hand experience from the achievers present over there. We interviewed many of them in order to know the hindrances they have faced in their lives and the struggles they have undergone to overcome these hurdles. 4 members of our team are sighted and it was a totally new experience for them to be amongst so many VI's. They were all very impressed by each and everything over there. Our presentation was very much appreciated and it was enough to encourage us to move forward in this field. As everyone knows, the convention was held in Blind People's Association. This enabled our team to see a glimpse of the life of the students over there. We interviewed some of the students and

[AI] Problem with JAWS 10 MS Outlook
Dear listers, The above version of JAWS installed with Office XP Professional works fine with other applications except with MS Outlook's some portions. Once the mail has been opened or for that sake a new mail is being composed, it reads everything. It just would not read the lists/item heads reaching my mailbox, in short, it won't read neither the subject, sender or anything else for that matter. Besides 'route JAWS TO PC'/JAWS cursor will always say blank just as in case of reading mail listings too which it seems it does not recognise any text visible to others. It could be JAWS's problem or of MS outlook, ur help will be appreciated. To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. [AI] Curious case of poll accessibility
Friends Yesterday, casting away my apathy and cynicism, I finally ventured to cast my vote. Accessibility, as promised and directed by ECI was conspicuous by its absence. No ballot paper/list of candidates with their symbols was available in Braille at the polling booth, though I opine that one such list per booth is sufficient. Labeling on EVM was on half of buttons, starting from number 18, on winch curiously, there were no representatives to be chosen. I believe it is the case of accessibility spreading slowly to less important areas like Nagpur. Hope our brethren would get accessible polls in Mumbai, Delhi or other important cities. I did report the case to local news papers. Would complaining to ECI, make a difference in the long run? I am hearing that poll officials were also blissfully ignorant of rule 49o of election conduct rules. Two cheers to democracy. Further we have also been receiving suggestions for installing speaking software and key pads with letters in Braille to facilitate use by persons with visual impairment. 2. We have examined the above suggestions and banks are advised to take necessary steps *to provide all existing ATMs / future ATMs with ramps* so that wheel chair users / persons with disabilities can easily access them and also make arrangements in such a way that the height of the ATM does not create an impediment in its use by a wheelchair user. *Banks may also take appropriate steps including providing ramps at the entrance of the bank branches* so that the persons with disabilities / wheel chair users can enter the bank branches and conduct business without much difficulty. 3. Further, banks should* make at least one third of new ATMs installed as talking ATMs with Braille keypads and place them strategically* *in consultation with other banks to ensure that at least one talking ATM with Braille keypad is generally available in each locality *for catering to needs of visually impaired persons. Re: [AI] Summer Programming Workshop at NAB
Hi, The short term course seems interesting. Following few questions coming to mind : What academic qualification should the applicant possess? Any certified computer course expected? What kind of help can an applicant expect for accomodation during the course? Is this course likely to be conducted in other NAB centers now or in future? On 4/17/09, NAB Helpline nabhelpl...@gmail.com wrote: Hello access Indians From May 2 until the end of June, 2009, a first of its kind event is taking place at the National Association for the Blind, RK Puram, Sector-5. Professor Arun Mehta and his team will lead a hands-on training and software writing workshop in web programming using Ruby on Rails running on a variety of platforms, including low-cost netbooks. For a long time, the visually impaired have sought a highly portable device with quality text to speech, connectivity and navigation, but more importantly one that is easy to adapt to their exact needs. The attempt at this workshop will be to make a big step in achieving this goal, using the latest technologies, while training significant numbers of visually impaired persons in developing software for this platform. As part of the programming effort, modules will be developed to enhance the skid platform for the needs of special kids, see skid.org.in. Besides those with visual impairment, a major beneficiary of such modules will be children with dyvslexia, who often learn faster with audio support. Following in the tradition of Jaws and emacspeak, we believe that the best way to develop accessible software is to have persons with the target disabilities as part of the development team. Apart from superior insight into desfign issues and essential testing skills, disabled persons who will actually use the software all their lives bring long-term commitment to the maintenance and upgradation of the software. Computer programming is a highly creative and well-paid profession that is suitable for persons with mobility issues, for the work can be done through the computer and the Internet. These reasons were certainly important in our deciding to launch this innovative vocational training program, however, this effort gains an entirely new dimension, if we consider that software for persons who are visually impaired, also is accessible to persons who are illiterate. Hence, this effort at jump-starting software development for and by the visually impaired can have significant impact in how quickly the illiterate people of India can start using computers, and in the process perhaps gain literacy as well. The workshop will consist of one day a week of lectures, tutorials and demonstrations, Specifically organized on Saturdays. Participants will be divided into project teams and assigned a clearly defined software project. Each project team of maximum 5 members will receive focussed attention from Professor Mehta or his assistants at a weekly meeting scheduled as per mutual convenience. For visually handicapped persons, the National Association for the Blind is charging Rs. 2,000/- as fees for this workshop. Students who cannot afford to pay this fee may apply for fee concession. A special provision is being made for close friends or relatives of blind persons attending this workshop. They will receive 50% discount on the regular workshop fee, and hence only pay Rs. 5000. Against this, they will commit to regularly working with, and helping the blind person, in the programming tasks. A small number of seats are available for students from the wider community, who wish to learn cutting-edge web programming technologies from a team of international standard. For this, the workshop fees is Rs. 10,000 only. Who can apply? Any person who can use the computer efficiently with the use of screen reading software can benefit from this course. If you use the computer and feel that the computer should do something more or better than what it is doing now for you, you could join this course. If you like to experiment and play with technology, this course is must for you. Duration of the Course: Duration of the course is two months. Classes will be held in the months of May and June, 2009. There will be only two formal classes or face to face sessions in a week. However, computer lab could be made available for more time upon request and will be subjected to availability of labs. Students will experience the new way of interacting and team work which will prepare them for placements in technology sector. How to apply: The application form can be obtained by sending one e-mail to nabhelpl...@gmail.com . you may fill the same and send it by e-mail to nabhelpl...@gmail.com as an attachment. selection of the students will be done on the basis of an interview to be held on 29th april 2009. This was the first type of awareness programme in this level and we

We at Design Science are happy to announce the release of our newest product, MathDaisy. Many educational institutions now require teachers, instructors, and professors to make classroom materials accessible to students with disabilities. MathDaisy makes it possible to save Microsoft Word documents containing equations as a DAISY book that can be read by students on a personal computer or a dedicated eBook reader. The press release has been published on our website at http://www.dessci.com/en/company/press/releases/090413.htm Our hope is that MathDaisy together with Word's Save as DAISY makes it easy enough to publish DAISY books with math in them that anyone can, and more importantly, will create accessible material to give to their students, colleagues, etc. Neil Soiffer Senior Scientist Design Science, Inc. www.dessci.com ~ Makers of MathType, MathFlow, MathPlayer, MathDaisy, WebEQ, Equation Editor ~ ___ Blindmath mailing list blindm...@nfbnet.org http://www.nfbnet.org/mailman/listinfo/blindmath_nfbnet.org To unsubscribe, change your list options or get your account info for Blindmath: http://www.nfbnet.org/mailman/options/blindmath_nfbnet.org/pranav.lal%40gmai l.com To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. Hi, Do you plan to go to college? If yes, the best thing that you can do is to take a course that teaches you commerce. This course will give you the necessary grounding in accounts that you would need to proceed. Alternatively, you can look at professional courses such as chartered accountancy. There are several kinds of courses in accounts. For example, you have courses in cost accounting. These are again professional courses. I do not know the entry requirements for any of these courses. [AI] New study holds out hope for treating deafness
The Hindu News Update Service News Update Service Saturday, April 18, 2009 : 0315 Hrs Health New study holds out hope for treating deafness LOS ANGELES (Xinhua): Researchers said on Thursday they have identified tiny molecules that help people hear, a breakthrough that may lead to a treatment for hearing loss and deafness. An international team, including researchers from Tel Aviv University in Israel and Purdue University in the United States, found that seven microRNAs, small segments of the genetic building block ribonucleic acid, or RNA, are critical to the survival of specialized sensory cells in the inner ear, called hair cells. Lack of the seven molecules will reduce the number of hair cells developed, and therefore cause abnormal development of the inner ear and progressive hearing loss, the researchers reported in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Until very recently, science only knew that mutation in protein-coding genes caused deafness, said Karen Avraham, the Tel Aviv University professor who led the study. We went a layer deeper and discovered that the loss of microRNAs leads to deafness as well. Donna Fekete, a Purdue University professor of biological sciences involved in the study, said the findings could provide promising leads to treat hearing loss. The molecules we identified could be used as a molecular tool delivered directly into the ears of deaf people to induce regeneration of important sensory cells that would improve hearing, Fekete said. Fekete said the molecules also could potentially help people with balance disorders related to inner ear function such as Meniere's disease. Re: [AI] hi list members good morning a small query please answer
Dear Friends My query is, many a times, when 2 or more consonants come together then 1 consonant is unpronounced. Why? Then in the case, then in the words, “Honest, Honour Xerox”, why “H X” are silent? Know, Knee, Knowledge, Knife, Psychology, Pneumonia, Physics, Philosophy have the first letter silent. In the words having ph together, is pronounced as f. Why is it so? -- Good friendship is like the relationship between eye hand! Re: [AI] Curious case of poll accessibility
dear rajesh, this is how our democracy works since the ages. in the society where 50 percent population that is women are neglected to the extent that the womens' reservation bill is pending since the last two governments. the outgoing Loksabha had at least 8 percent women MPs'; God save the next. in such a bleak circumstancces, how do you expect the handicap to figure on the agenda of the society/government? Ghanshyam Asudani. - Original Message - From: Asudani, Rajesh rajeshasud...@rbi.org.in To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Sent: Friday, April 17, 2009 3:31 PM Subject: [AI] Curious case of poll accessibility Friends Yesterday, casting away my apathy and cynicism, I finally ventured to cast my vote.
