Re: [AI] Inaccessible transport of the Indian capital

2011-08-02 Thread VIVEK KAVYA
On 8/1/11, SC Vashishth subhashvashis...@gmail.com wrote:
 Dear Satguru,

I am happy that you have initiated this so very important yet ignored
subject. Most users with disabilities do suffer the inaction on the part of
DTC conductors. In fact after the arrival of new low floor buses, the
conductors have become relaxed since the route number etc is displayed
digitally on the front, rear and the boarding side of the buses in Hindi and
English. Therefore, they feel there is no need to shout out the route number
and bus stops without realizing the fact that there are many who due to
various reasons including visual disabilities, illiteracy, or due to being
new in the city and not aware about the geography, can not make sense of
written numbers and unknown or not so popular destinations.

We are touching several such related themes in the forthcoming 13th
International Conference on the Mobility Transport for the Elderly
and the Disabled Persons in New Delhi for which abstracts have been
extended till 15th August for Indian Authors.

Theme J: Potential of Technology in Accessibility for All (Information
Technology, Accessibility Aids etc.) is the best theme under which articles
on all technological innovations including those of web access guidelines
etc, screen readers, etc can be discussed.

I once again appeal all interested persons to write abstracts on issues of
mobility, travel, technology, transport solutions etc and submit online at
 www.transed2012.in

The issue mean while has larger implications for the stakeholders in Delhi.
Most pedestrian pathways are not continuous and are full of barriers. Today
you can not cross any road safely as there is no accessible and safe
pathway/ zebra crossing. At few places where there are crossing, you can not
cross them because the vehicles would not stop and you keep risking your
life or wait for all vehicles to pass. The whole road culture has degraded
and this is no body's area, however, it is leading to chaos on Delhi Roads.
I am sure it must be similar with most urban and semi urban cities and town
across India. This needs to be questioned so that commuters, pedestrians-
the first road users feel safe and comfortable and persons with disabilities
feel safe in using pedestrian infrastructure, roads and transport systems.

 Hi all,
Sorry for this lengthy mail but I'd try to make as short as I can.
I would like to draw your attention towards a very important issue.
 Friends
specially from Delhi may please pitch in and give their inputs.

I think, everyone must have noticed that In Delhi, the private buses, or
what we used to call them Blue line busses are no more on the roads
 except
 few roots in Delhi.
Whatever reason may be to get them off the road, I personally think, those
were quite accessible to us as the conductor used to call the names of the
stops that the bus is going to cover and a visually impaired person
 standing
on the bus stop could easily find the right bus even without any sighted
assistance. Now, in these low floor busses, be it Green busses, Redline,
Orange busses, AC/nonAC, it is almost impossible for a VI to get the right
bus without asking someone standing next to him as the DTC conductors
 don't
call the names of the stops. I had once got to know that there is clearly
written on every bus stop that conductor will have to call the stops names
for persons with vision problem but noone cares about that. To cut the
 story
short, there is no way out by which a visually impaired person can know
 the
number of the bus or the root of that bus.

I had once seen some device being developed at IIT Delhi but don't know
 much about its current status.

It was said and written in 1995 that the government shall frame schemes
 and
allocate funds to make the transport accessible to visually impaired and
 in
2010, the government made sure here in Delhi at least that whatever
accessibility is left, just take it away!

I appeal to one and all to come up with the ideas which could insure that
the transport which is the one of the most important part of our day to
 day
life becomes accessible to us and necessity of taking help from others is
 reduced to minimum.

Hoping for a healthy discussion on this.

[AI] Aarthi From Mauritius.

2011-08-02 Thread Aarthi Burthony
Hello Accessindians.

I thank everyone of you who have sent me their feedback on my email of
yesterday. Here are some more news of Mauritius.

In Mauritius there is a Council for Consumers Interests {CCI} of which
I am the Administrative Secretary. In my capacity of Administrative
Secretary of the CCI I addressed a formal correspondance to the CEO of
the Mauritius Post Limited to ask about the rules and regulations
regarding the posting and receiving of articles for the blind in
Mauritius.

MR. Peechen from the Mauritius Post Limited has been dealing with me
via email. I had received the answers to my querry via email. I have
been informed that the posting of Braille Literature within Mauritius
is free of charge. The receiving of Braille Literature is exempted
from custom vat duty but not exempted from post office charges. But in
most cases when it is mentioned on the packet that the article is for
the blind then there is no post office charges. Also, posting of
Braille Literature abroad by Surface Mail {Sea Mail} is free of
charge. Regarding the receiving of articles for the blind like
apparatus and specialised equipments; the custom vat duty matter is
regulated by the Controller of Customs. I have been kindly referred to
deal with the Controller of Customs in this regard. I intend to
address a formal querry to the Controller of Customs this week.

I have highly appreciated the delicate warmness with which the
Mauritius Post Limited has proved to have towards the CCI. The
Mauritius Post Limited has indeed answered to each of my emails in a
very polite manner. The Mauritius Post Limited has also stipulated
that though they work on a commercial line the CEO may waive any
charges on a social welfare basis.

So now, I intend to inform the blind Mauritian community of this rule
of the Mauritius Post Limited regarding the sending and receiving of
Braille Literature.

Aarthi.

[AI] Fwd: College-Made Device Helps Visually Impaired Students See

Hi all,

Wahid

-- Forwarded message --

College-Made Device Helps Visually Impaired Students See and Take Notes
August 1, 2011, 5:51 pm

By Rachel Wiseman

College students with very poor vision have had to struggle to see a
blackboard and take notes-basic tasks that can hold some back. Now a
team of four students from Arizona State University has designed a
system, called Note-Taker, that couples a tablet PC and a video
camera, and could be a major advance over the small eyeglass-mounted
telescopes that many students have had to rely on. It recently won
second place in Microsoft's Imagine Cup technology competition.

There are roughly 75,000 students at colleges and trade schools who
are visually impaired. The telescopes allow students with low vision
to see the blackboard, but they can only focus on one section at a
time. Then they have to take off the telescope, write notes, and then
go back to the board and try and catch up with the lecture.

David S. Hayden, who graduated from Arizona State in May, understands
these challenges-he can only read texts if he gets about two inches
away from the material. Mr. Hayden, the lead designer of Note-Taker,
says he faced a morbid tradeoff in class. Using the assistive
technology that was available to him, he could either take notes or
listen and absorb the information, but never both. After he had to
withdraw from three senior-level math classes, he says, I realized
the existing technologies weren't going to assist my needs, so I had a
project on my hands.

The result was Note-Taker, which connects a tablet PC (a laptop with a
screen you can write on) to a high-resolution video camera. Screen
commands get the camera to pan and zoom. The video footage, along with
audio, can be played in real time on the tablet and are also saved for
later reference. Alongside the video is a space for typed or
handwritten notes, which students can jot down using a stylus. That
should be helpful in math and science courses, says Mr. Hayden, where
students need to copy down graphs, charts, and symbols not readily
available on a keyboard.

Mr. Hayden built a prototype of the device with the help of John A.
Black Jr., a researcher specializing in computing and human visual
perception at the university's Center for Cognitive Ubiquitous
Computing. The project was then awarded a grant from the National
Science Foundation and refined with the help of Michael Astrauskas,
Shashank Srinivas, and Qian Yan, who are Arizona State students.

It's unlike what I've seen, says Clara Van Gerven, an
access-technology content specialist with the National Federation of
the Blind. The handwriting feature seems valuable, and she has not
seen it in other computer-compatible video-recording systems.
Note-Taker, she says, uses existing technology to its advantage and
then adds the rewind feature and the manual note-taking to that. It
seems like it would be a useful tool.

But no tool can replace institutional support, says Chris S.
Danielsen, director of public relations for the federation. The
university is always going to have to make sure that whatever
technology it uses is accessible to blind and low-vision students, he
says. (Arizona State U. has gotten in hot water in the past in just
this area.)

The team continues to develop the Note-Taker-a fourth-generation model
is already in the works-and is looking into ways to get it on the
market. Though the prototype is prohibitively expensive, the designers
hope to bring the price tag down to $1,000 per camera unit (the tablet
PC would be purchased separately), so that it will be affordable to
more consumers. Their second-place finish a few weeks ago in the
Imagine Cup's software-design category may also attract some interest.

Mr. Hayden is starting graduate school in the fall at the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He's taking one of the
Note-Taker models with him to use when classes resume.

What can I do to save phone memory? Do I have to bother about it at all? Please

Aarthi.

Re: [AI] why UID (AADHAR) is important

2011-08-02 Thread Amar Jain
This I have heard from many people. After getting the form filled, they
didn't come back.

Perhaps the load...
Little sad news, UIDAI introduced image verification for status check, and
no alternative for screen reader users. Of course haven't tried webvisum as
I have to upgrade it.

Has the Govt informed the public of the country as to what the procedure is
for this UID No. business. A couple of people had visited my home some time
ago in this connection and had filled up forms. That was the last we heard
of them.

Dear George,

The citizens have to approach the department agency in concern (post
office, etc) there are also camps organised for enrolement.

It generally takes some time between the actual enrolement day and the
issue of the number

Let me first congratulate your institution's efforts for applying ugc

You cannot purchase all the accesiries you mentioned in your mail with

you add a Plextalk or digital voice recorder?

Re: [AI] Requesting Scribe related policies in Abroad

2011-08-02 Thread Adhimoolam Vetrivel Murugan
The Americans with disability act specifies that reasonable
accommodations should be provided to the visually challenged persons
during written examinations. Such accommodations include extra time
(50% or double time), making questions available in preferred formats
(brail or large text), availability of computers etc. But remember
that unlike India, here the act provides greater flexibility. For
example, when I wrote my PhD qualifying exam, I had the scribe and the
computer since I didn’t want to concentrate on just typing. Besides
extra time, I also gave my scribes some important words like authors,
sociological terms etc in advance so that they could familiarize with
spelling of those words. This is where India needs to work. Remember
that even in America the battle is ongoing since many universities are
either unaware of the law or simply don’t care to implement them
properly. In fact just last year NFB won a case related to the law
exam. And the struggle against administrators in campuses like MIT is
a work in progress since students are making their first entry in such
places.

I had the similar issue and had actualy posted the query on the list. On the
basis of the responses I got, the only option appeared to be to do a factory
restore through the *#7370# command. This virtually formats the phone memory
and nothing is left, including the Talks serial number.

Interestingly, however, the issue gott resolved when I updated my firmware
to the latest update. But that is not advisable as many features, such as
the web, email and help contents, become inaccessible with Talks and are
likely to be fixed only with the Talks' next release.

Hello Mr. Sandeep,
As far as my knowledge is concerned, N150 is availlable with
pre-loaded windows7 starter addition where outlook express cannot
work. But you can install windows live mail. You can install office
2003 or 2007 where you can work with MS out look mail client.
You can use it for browsing and reading and recording purposes. If
you want to install XP operating system better go for N148 which is
availlable in dass mode and cheeper than N150.

I had the similar issue and had actualy posted the query on the list. On
 the
basis of the responses I got, the only option appeared to be to do a
 factory
restore through the *#7370# command. This virtually formats the phone
 memory
and nothing is left, including the Talks serial number.

Interestingly, however, the issue gott resolved when I updated my firmware
to the latest update. But that is not advisable as many features, such as
the web, email and help contents, become inaccessible with Talks and are
likely to be fixed only with the Talks' next release.

[AI] Googling with firefox

2011-08-02 Thread Asudani, Rajesh
Friends
This query is of course silly from a person who is using computers for more
than seven years now, but believe me, I have had no formal training in dealing
with this indispensability, so was flabbergasted to realize that after updating
to firefox latest version i.e. five point something, I could not google
properly.
After typing the search term, I cannot seem to press the required search
buttons.
Various modifications in search terms are presented but I cannot seem to search
those options also.
What should I do?

Robotic navigation aids the visually impaired
Compiled by Photonics Spectra staff
LOS ANGELES - A robot vision-based mobility aid that was shown a year
ago is now being further developed to help the visually impaired
navigate city streets, neighborhoods, offices and other complex
locations.

This robotic navigation system has a binocular camera that is linked
by sophisticated direction-finding software to a vest that directs the
wearer around obstacles. Images courtesy of USC Viterbi School of
Engineering.

Most visually impaired people still rely on a very rudimentary
technology - a simple cane - to navigate the world. Meanwhile,
engineering researchers at the University of Southern California have
developed software that sees the world. The software is linked to a
system that provides tactile messages that alert users about objects
in their paths, such as low-hanging branches.

The system uses a camera that is worn on the head and connected to a
PC that uses simultaneous localization and mapping software to build
maps of the environment and to identify a safe path around obstacles.
The route information is then conveyed to the user through a guide
vest that has four micromotors located on the shoulder and waist. They
vibrate like a cell phone.

Simultaneous localization and mapping software analyzes data from
stereo camera views (above) to create 3-D renderings of the scene
(below) and to map a path through it.

If a low-hanging branch, for example, is to the left of a visually
impaired person, a micromotor will vibrate on the left shoulder.
Scientists say that this technology, unlike a cane, will enable the
user to avoid falls and other serious injuries when approaching larger
objects.

The researchers tested the system on blind subjects at the Braille
Institute and received positive feedback. They are now working on ways
to improve the prototype. Because the head-mounted camera is bulky,
they are working on a microcamera system that could be attached to
glasses. The goal is to have the system in place by the end of the
year.

Less bulky than the current head-mounted camera, the next-generation
system the team is working on, pictured here, will use a microcamera
that could be attached to glasses.

Funding for the research - which will be used to help veterans who
have been blinded during their military service - was provided by the
National Science Foundation, the US Army and the W.M. Keck Foundation.
