Re: [AI] Urgent requirement of different university’s rule or circular regarding scribe and extra time in exam for VI
I think there is no consolidated rule of UGC which provides for extra time. But UGC and court have already issued directions to the universities to amend their rules to make in line of equal opportunity. University should have been drafted the rules in this regard erlier, practically you have left with no choice but to pursuaid the authority that it is common practice followed by every university and even by UGC in its NET exam. If it works for ur exam then fine otherwise there is need to compell the authority to amend their rule in this regard as its not in the interest of justice forVI . So please send me the different university’s order or circular and any court order or judgment which contains directions pertaining to extra time clause. This will be of great help while convincing the authority about the prevalence additional time provided to the VI examinees in almost all exams. Well well, let me put it this way, I will forget just now the ironical hint of west given to me for free for which I deeply thank You. As a psychologist, I had the opportunity to study animal psychology long enough to know horses have been tried out for blind people, well, unfortunately in west and USA, what to do, they have been somehow quicker. I have grown up myself with horses, in an environment where they were free and not trained for anything else but field works. Up to an extend, horses do work perfect for blind people, but I don't wish my enemies to face a scared horse where it has no limits on running and putting everything and anything down. Then perhaps would be a kind of a fascinating show to see a horse dashing through fruits venders, food stalls and clothes stands. As big as it looks, a horse can be very very easily scared by certain factors coming from sideways where we know it can not see properly anyway. And there the research had stopped being taken for good, especially in a city with lots of population and extreme traffic crowd. The personal experience with animals, where I must admit horses are exceedingly intelligent, has nothing to do with the capacity and/or vulnerability of a particular creature in guiding a blind. On top, as You all know, we are both blind and we both move with a stick which has no vibrations devises attached, we don't have obstacles detecting glasses and still we do manage our best, which may not exclude a guide dog if Mahendra hadn't been fearful towards dogs and I would be able to be born again to manage accepting one in my flat. :-) - Original Message - From: Asudani, Rajesh rajeshasud...@rbi.org.in To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Sent: Thursday, September 08, 2011 6:42 AM Subject: Re: [AI] Guide horse Hi Adina and others, Idea of guide horse is not so far fetched or ridiculous as is thought. As for the other issue of the law and the problems at the ground level- I know how to surrmount those but what is the point of discussing it before we have a sample dog and an owner who will face the system. What we need to do is find a trainer who has some understanding of the situation and methods and a few owners who will try then as we go along we can think of the sponsorships and the law. Kanchan, I have given this case to Advocate Rajan Mani to be filed in Delhi High Court but he told me that we cannot take stay order for coming exam of 18th Sep 2011 since the Court would also want to give some time to respondents to answer, however, he is optimistic to get stay order for the next Clerical exam to be conducted by IBPS on 27 Nov 2011. According to Mr. Rajan, we need to collect and establish relevant documents in favor of our petition since the result of this case would have an impact at National level. We would even not want our petition to be dismissed in the Court as similar kind of case in Delhi High Court was rejected couple of years back. I am asked to collect lot of documents and I have collected the best I could do. Going to meet the Advocate this week and then I would update the list with the further development. Regards. Re: [AI] guide dog post clarification
Jean, Absolutely, absolutely, absolutely... The problem here is one is spoiled for choice. Hundreds hundreds of VIs at least in Mumbai, are confidently getting about in the city in the worst of travelling conditions because they have determination to move out with their white stick and have no option. I was one of them, what gives most confidence to me that i can reach safely to any corner of the city if friends call upon me. At least in Mumbai i never required my family members or any aid to help me go out. I required and certainly took help when crossing the streets, Knowing the bus number, and sometimes catching scarce autos. To repeat, it's not my qualification or my achievements give me confidence,, but ability to pick up my stick and get going. However, i appreciate the search for more comfortable, more safer options of travelling. Debates are always good. Please read my entire post below, before commenting as this is not a simple question. It is a long post but I don't post that often so I'll make up here for lost time. To have an enlightened discussion about whether or not guide dogs as an aide to independent mobility by blind people is a viable option in the Indian context, some facts about guide dogs and guide dog training must be understood. There are many misnomers perpetuated by popular media, about what guide dogs for the blind can and can't do and how guide dogs and their blind handlers interact. Many people, both blind and sighted, believe that a guide dog is responsible for taking a blind person to their destination rather like a sighted companion. Stories abound of the heroic guide dog who saved its blind owner from some tragedy. In reality, a guide dog responds to commands given by its blind handler such as left, right, forward etc, as part of a progressive set of directions from one place to another. The blind person must always know where he or she is going and must remain oriented to the environment at all times. At no time does a guide dog assume responsibility for taking a blind person from one place to another. It is therefore manditory that the blind handler be trained in and practice good mobility and orientation skills in order to use a dog effectively. Using a dog does not substitute for mobility training, quite the opposite. Anyone contemplating training with a guide dog must have above-average mobility skills before any training can begin. Many people make the mistake of believing that having a dog will make this requirement unnecessary. At present, the cost of training a guide dog is about fifty thousand US dollars, that is within the US economy and taking into account current labor costs etc. The suitability of a particular dog for guide work begins with the breeding process. Genetics, temperment and other profiling are factors in determining whether a dog is right for this work. Although donated dogs are occasionally trained for work as guides, the vast majority are bred at the training schools and given to families to raise. The job of puppy-raising families is to acquaint the dog with typical environments it will encounter throughout its working life. The dog is socialized within the family and local community, taken into public, and must demonstrate certain qualities of temperment and behavior necessary for a guide dog. During this time the pupppies are assessed to ensure they are developing the required skills and behaviors. When they are about eighteen months old they are taken to the training school where they begin learning how to become a guide. During this process they are constantly assessed as to whether they should remain in the program. A substantial number of dogs each year are removed from the program due to one or another reason and they are given to local families where they make excellent pets. Some even become therapy dogs or assume a service that is less stressful or demanding. During the training period the dog is also evaluated to determine what type of person would be the best match for that dog. Careful records are kept on all of these aspects so that the best possible pairing can take place. All of this explanation is to say that as one person correctly said in his posting to the list these are not pets. One does not go to a shop, pick out a dog he likes and have it trained. A person who is qualified to train guide dogs through a recognized school must first complete a two year apprenticeship before applying to be a trainer with that school. They must understand both dogs and people and they must understand how dogs can supplement the independent travel of blind people. It is not

I agree with most of the points you made. I was thinking of getting a guide dog because I'm not very satisfied with the mobility options that I presently have. Presently, I take the help of a sighted guide who helps me to move around. We have appointed a guy specially for this purpose. I even know how to use a cane, but I don't use it very often. For me, the biggest problem with being visually impaired is that I can't move around as freely as other people can. And I firmly believe that even the most successful blind people in India face this problem. We keep reading articles about blind people who have done great things in their lives, but how often do you see visually impaired people in hotels, restaurants or at other public places? I, for one, have never seen or met a blind person at a public place. If you go to an airport, most people working there will act like they've never seen a blind person before. This may not be true for all countries, but it is certainly true for India. They say that there are millions of blind people in India. Tell me, how many of those people lead normal social lives? Just being able to use the Internet does not make you normal, does it? People here keep talking about screen readers all the time, but shouldn't we give some importance to these things as well? These notifications come up very frequently on updating drop box files, or asking us to update windows etc. However, I do not know how to read them again if I miss out on listening to the message once. Hi, I also face same problem frequently, though I still don't know how to read those messages, but I think there is no such command to read those notifications, even jaws curser doesn't work upon it. Hi, Today I am seeking your inputs in solving this confusion: Yesterday I was visiting blindsea.com and there I found two links: download the realspeak voices for Mobile (RSM) and download the Vocaliser voices for Mobile (VCM). Now, when purchasing the Talks licance, we normally get the option that whether we want licance for Eluquence or Vocaliser or both. I have licance for Eluquence only and I know that I can't use Vocaliser voices on my phone. But what about these RealSpeak voices? which family would they fall in? What type of licance one should have in order to use them? Satguru ___,__.___ Life's battle do not always go, to the stronger or faster man. Hi, Due to so many latest devices that have come, I really wish if there could be a good exhibition on all the tech devices which are useful for the VI. Or we can arrange a one day event where in we can call various brands and ask them to demonstrate there gadgets followed by a question and answer session. Let me know if this sounds fruitful and we can take next steps to organize this. [AI] Phones may be able to see their way around
Times of India: NAGPUR: Phones telling you about nearest hotels, ATMs, or police station or way to a particular place are already here. But they do so using maps. Imagine phone's camera identifying your location and guiding you to your destination. Or help a person on the other end find a lost key by actually pointing towards it. These next generation smartphones are expected to be in the market in the next 2-4 years. And apps like these are being developed right here in city's backyard. Nagpur may still not be an IT hub but city-based mid-sized company GlobalLogic is working in association with leading mobile handset makers and service providers in developing such products. The former Lambent Technologies was taken over by US-based GlobalLogic four years ago. The company held a road show of the latest products developed by it on Thursday. Addressing newspersons, GlobalLogic vice-president Shashikant Chaudhary said we work on behalf of various international players and using basic technology we have developed certain products.
