Re: [AI] menus in m s word 2007
Hi, My real problem is that, in word 2003, the menus could be focused either by their commands such as alt+i for insert menu or alt+a for table menu etc., or by pressing the rlight or left arrow after focusing to the file menu. But now, neither the menus could be focused through their commands nor they could be focused by pressing the right arrow after focusing the file menu. Hope now my doubt is clear. Renuka. Re: [AI] menus in m s word 2007
Hi! Madam, I would like to make one thing clear. Here in MS office2007, the menu bar is entirely different then the MS office2003. In 2003, menus are arranged on the menu bar such a way, if you press alt key, it will take you to the menu bar there you can use your left arrow, or right arrow to go through the all menus, after if you hit space bar or down arrow, it will opens the list of options. Alternately you can use keyboard commands E-g: alt F, alt E, for file menu and edit menu then it will brings you drop down menu which consist of option of the specific menu In MS office 2007, menu bar is known as ribbons: it split in to two parts, as upper ribbon, lower ribbon. Generally the upper ribbon remains constant it contains main menus of the application. E-g: home, insert, page layout. You can access upper ribbon, by pressing alt and then using arrow keys, but the lower ribbon is volatile, there for mainly it will depend on the upper ribbon, it contains the options of the each menus, it means it will displays the options of currently focused menu on upper ribbon. To access MS office2007 menu bar sufficiently, first press alt, and then use your left, or right arrow keys, to reach desire menu, and then just use the tab, or shift tab keys to navigate through the options. E-g: if your focus is on home menu on upper ribbon, then you will get options of Home menu on lower ribbon. Alternately you can use key commands such as alt H, alt N, alt P for home, insert, page layout. Please note: once you are in the lower ribbon, you cannot access or switch to any other menus until you reach the upper ribbon, and in MS office2007 you will find office sub menu instead of file menu. I hope it would help you some what, still if you need any help please come on Skype. [AI] Strange problem with my Nokia C5!
Hi all, Previously also I brought this to the list but since there was no trafic on this, thought of putting it again in case some one can help me out with the following: Eversince I've upgraded my firmware to the latest (071.01), I am not able to asign ringtone of my choice to the different profiles that exist on my Nokia C5-00. When trying to change ringtone for a profile, it only shows me the list of tones which come with my phone and doesn't show the MP3/wav sounds from my MMC. Further, when Talks is on, some times it doesn't show the list of the phone's tones as well and shows only two items - Off and Download Sounds. When Talks is muted, then only I can assign any of those tones. However, through file manager, I can assign any of the MP3/WAV sounds as my ringtone to the active profile. Is there anyone else who is facing the same? any solution to this particular issue? Any help in this regard shall be much appreciated. [AI] online learning resources
Hello This posting did not get on the list, hence, I am pasting it below. Harish Kotian Quoting: The Hindu: The Hindu Learning is undoubtedly more effective through visual interactive materials. File Photo: S. Siva Saravanan This edition of NetSpeak reviews the developments in the realm of tools and resources useful in teaching and learning endeavour. Educational videos Learning is undoubtedly more effective through visual interactive materials. Though traditional textbook continues to be a major educational resource, thanks to the Net, lecture videos are fast becoming an alternative learning tool. As you may be aware, tens of hundreds of video tutorials on a variety of subjects are available. Brightstorm (http://www.brightstorm.com/), the service that offers several free videos on subjects such as science, mathematics and English is one of the good resources of this kind. In this regard, you may find a visit to the search directory WatchKnowLearn (http://www.watchknowlearn.org/default.aspx) beneficial in locating appropriate educational videos. KhanAcademy's impact As discussed in the past, KhanAcademy (http://www.hindu.com/2010/11/01/stories/010110152672100.htm) is a wonderful educational resource containing concise educational videos on almost all topics. The highlight of this project is its comprehensive nature. One can find videos that cover the entire spectrum of a subject - you can enter at a basic level and move over to more advanced topics. For instance, the mathematics section contains videos ranging from basic arithmetic to calculus. Besides videos, KhanAcademy now offers exercise modules and other self-paced learning tools as well. The growth of KhanAcademy, which has drawn the attention of stalwarts like Bill Gates (http://www.thegatesnotes.com/Topics/Education/Sals-Amazing-Global-Academy) and organisations like Google (http://www.project10tothe100.com/index.html), is certainly phenomenal. The impact of KhanAcademy videos on the traditional pedagogic systems is yet to be seen. It has led to an evaluation by educationists through experiments to compare the classroom performance with and without Khan videos (http://blendmylearning.com/). The success of the Khan project, whose videos are created single-handedly by one person (http://www.khanacademy.org/about/faq), offers us a few pedagogic wisdom bits or insights: A person, whose basics are strong, can learn any subject, gain expertise and pass on that knowledge to others with ease. Short videos, focussed solely on a topic, are more effective than longer ones. The Khan videos are of short duration and this might be a factor behind making the project a runaway success. And, this is an instance of a valuable educational product created without adopting complex tools - KhanAcademy videos are produced with the help of simple tools like SmoothDraw and Camtasia Studio (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khan_Academy). It seems the success of KhanAcademy has inspired some instructors to emulate its mode of production and lecture delivery style. The Youtube channel, 'Mathematicalmonk' (http://www. youtube.com/user/mathematicalmonk) is an instance of this emerging trend. The site hosts videos on topics such as Probability and Machine Learning. The nature of the videos hosted on this site is similar to the ones available in KhanAcademy - short duration videos produced with simple tools like a pen tablet, SmoothDraw and so on. Speakaboos Education does not mean learning core subjects (such as science, mathematics, history and the like) alone. Along with those subjects the pedagogic/home environment should offer facilities that help kids learn life lessons too - like how to deal with an antagonistic schoolmate, how to develop positive thinking, leadership qualities and so on. Videos that facilitate such learning tasks are also in place. Speakaboos (http://www.speakaboos.com/) is one such site that addresses this issue. Teaching/learning projects that help you undertake on-line course on different subjects are also in place - like the community learning project P2PU (teaching/learning by peers for peers), discussed in the past. Yet another service thriving in this segment is the Alison (http://alison.com), an online resource that offers courseware on a variety of topics for free. J. [AI] Facebook has offered up improvements to its friends lists.
Hello The posting below did not get to the list, hence copying below. Harish Kotian Quoting: Facebook has offered up improvements to its friends lists. (Credit: Facebook) Facebook is giving users a hands-off option for managing friends lists. Dubbed Smart Lists, the latest improvement to the social network automatically creates friend groups, so users don't need to manage their lists on their own. According to Facebook, for now the feature will create lists connected to workplace, school, family, and city. For example, if a user lists their college on their profile, Smart Lists will automatically find all their friends that did the same, and group them together for easier sharing of content between them. Even though the feature automatically creates lists, Facebook says that users can still manually add or remove friends from lists to tailor it to their needs. Facebook users have been able to create lists for years now. However, according to Facebook, users complained about how time-consuming it is to organize lists for different parts of your life and keep them up to date. The social network says that this should help address that problem. Related stories: * Facebook intros group chats, new chat tool design * Facebook unveils video calling, new chat features * Facebook finally giving uses more privacy control Correlations between Facebook's Smart Lists and similar features in other services, like Circles in Google+, will inevitably be drawn. Like Circles, Smart Lists is designed to make it easier for users to share only certain content with people in specific groups. Facebook has already been targeted by critics for ostensibly following the lead of Google+. In July, the world's largest social network unveiled video calling--a feature that Google+ launched with earlier this year and that Facebook users had been hoping to have for quite some time. At the event unveiling the new feature, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg brushed aside questions related to Google+ and its features, and instead continued to say that the launch was just the beginning of his company's launching season 2011. In addition to Smart Lists, Facebook has also unveiled a new Close Friends and Acquaintances Lists feature. That option lets users group their best friends into their Close Friends list, and all others into Acquaintances. Users who do so will see all the updates from close friends, and only the most important updates from acquaintances, in their news feeds. Unlike Smart Lists, the Close Friends and Acquaintances Lists feature is not hands-off, so users will need to pick people to add to the groups. Facebook lets users group friends as close friends or acquaintances. (Credit: Facebook) However, since not everyone will fall into either category, Facebook says that users can not include folks in lists or add friends to the Restricted list. Upon doing so, those in the Restricted group will only be able to see the user's public posts. To help users choose whom to add to all those lists, Facebook says that it will offer up suggestions. Finally, Facebook announced today that the new lists come with their own news feeds, so users can opt to view content from only those folks in respective groups. Facebook's latest update comes just a few weeks after the company announced a host of privacy improvements to help users take more control over what they share, and who sees their content. Those improvements included the ability to approve tags before they show up on the user's profile, as well as the option to keep posts private from certain people. The privacy level of each profile element can also be modified on the service. Facebook's improved friend lists are scheduled to be made available to users this week. Not sure whether they deal in this company's standalone devices, but you can ask them if they can get it for you on order. Since generally these devices are costing more than 1.5 lakh, people go for the devices which run with laptop. The cost is also substantially reduced, it is within 1 Lakh. The best way to deal with is to use Jaws 12. Previous versions of Jaws do not quite support MS Office 2007 and later. In Jaws 12, there is the Virtual ribbon. [AI] SV captioning question
Copied from another mailing group. May be useful for some one. This message is intended mainly for teachers of blind or visually impaired students in STEM courses. Of course, this is a public forum and everyone is welcome to read the message and provide comments as appropriate. Having been the sighted teacher of a blind student for several years, I firmly believe that making it possible for blind and visually impaired people, and particularly blind and visually impaired students in STEM courses, to communicate using accurate printed and tactile graphics will improve the quality of life and the likelihood of academic success for those students. I have written a computer program that makes it possible, for the first time in history, for blind and visually impaired people to create such graphics in an accessible and user-friendly way. Version 0.0.8 of my drawing program for blind students is now posted and available for free and immediate download at: http://www.austincc.edu/baldwin/SWT-SVG/SVGDraw01.zip Three components are necessary to accomplish the goal of widespread graphics communication among blind and visually impaired students and their teachers: *Availability of a robust and universally accepted graphics standard. *Availability of a robust, accessible, and user-friendly drawing program that allows blind people to take advantage of the SVG standard. *Availability of high-quality, economical, and readily available graphics embossing equipment. A robust graphics standard - SVG A robust and universally accepted graphics standard is already available in the form of Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG). See Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) 1.1 (Second Edition) An accessible and user-friendly drawing program - SVGDraw01 I have written and provided, free of charge, a drawing program that blind and visually impaired people can use to draw pictures. To the best of my knowledge, no other existing program provides that capability. (If such a program exists, it is a well-kept secret.) Thus, for the first time in history, your students can express themselves using graphics. While many drawing programs exist, they are written for use by sighted people and not for use by blind people. My program is designed and written specifically for use by blind and visually impaired people. Even though my program is still under development, it already provides the capability for STEM students to create graphics that mirror many of the figures and diagrams typically found in STEM textbooks. A graph board on steroids As a teacher of blind or visually impaired students, you might think of this program as bringing the old-fashioned graph board into the computer age. Students and others using this program can create both printed and tactile graphics using many of the same thought processes that they would use when constructing a drawing on a graph board using pushpins, rubber bands, a protractor, and a measuring stick. For example, one student might use this program to create and send an SVG file to a friend with the message Take a look at the cool floor plan of my new apartment. Another student might use this program to create and send an SVG file to a college professor with the message This is a free body diagram showing the magnitude and directions of forces F21 and F23 caused by the interactions among charges q1, q2, and q3. Getting an immediate visual output I will be adding new capabilities over time. However, I probably won't add capabilities that would not be useful to blind and visually impaired users. For example, the program does not, by default, produce an immediate visual output. The primary output is intended to be a printer, a graphics embosser, or both. But, if you are sighted, or if you are blind and using the vOICe sonification software to view the progress of your drawing, you can use a procedure described in the attached file to view your drawing as it progresses. High-quality, economical, and readily-available graphics embossing equipment This is the area where we fall short relative to achieving our widespread graphics communications goal. Although high-quality embossing equipment is available in the marketplace, it is not economical (by computer standards) nor is it readily available for the personal use of most blind students. I view this as a supply and demand problem. Prior to the release of my program, there were no robust, accessible, and user-friendly tools that made it possible for blind people to create accurate graphics for use with a high-quality embosser. Thus, the demand for such embossing equipment has been very limited. My hope is that by making it possible for all blind people to create accurate graphics, the demand for such embossing equipment will go up and the costs for the equipment will come down. Even today, however, many schools, colleges, and other organizations own high-quality graphics embossing equipment that they

-Original message- From: Satguru Sent: 19/09/2011, 3:46 pm To: Access India Subject: [AI] Strange problem with my Nokia C5! Copy your desired sound clips into folder sound clips\dijital sounds. Hope it will be useful. [AI] Mumbai students develop robots to improve lives of the blind, elderly
Mumbai students develop robots to improve lives of the blind, elderly Published: Monday, Sep 19, 2011, 9:00 IST By Puja Pednekar | Place: Mumbai | Agency: DNA Imagine a robotic walker that can tell exactly how much and where your grandmother has walked on a particular day. Or better still, imagine a game of air hockey that can be played even by blind people. City students have built robots that will improve the lives of the elderly and the visually impaired. A group of students from international schools in the city have developed robots as part of the Sixth Indian Robotic Olympiad - Mumbai Chapter. A group of 14-year-old students bagged the first prize in the open category. Hemani Kalucha from Dhriubhai Ambani International School at Bandra-Kurla Complex, Arvind Ranganathan, and Nikeet Dharia fromEcole Mondiale, Juhu They built 'X Sight', a robotic air hockey game for the visually impaired. Blind people do not have many recreational options. So we decided to take air hockey, a popular game easily available in shopping malls, and adopt it so that even the blind can play it, said Kalucha. Within four months, the students customised the air hockey board, dividing into 12 zones, and the striker or the puck was installed with colour sensors. Each colour represents a value that the puck is able to read. It sends the information via Bluetooth to a plotter or tracker, which is a glove fitted with sensors that the visually impaired can wear on their left hand. This plotter vibrates enabling them to sense the position of the puck. The students have built a robotic arm that can be attached to the board. The arm helps in playing defence, as it can stop the puck by sensing its movement. One unique feature is that the blind will have to rely on tactile instead of sound, she said. The students tested their robotic game at the Happy Home for Blind and National Association for Blind at Worli. A group of 12-year-olds -- Rushabh Kenny (Podar International School, Santacruz), Raghav Ringshia (Utpal Sanghvi School, Juhu) and Shikhar Bakhda, from Jamnabai Narsee School, Juhu, bagged the second position (open category), with their 'Mr Boon Walk' robot, an interactive walker for elderly. They got idea for the walker when they saw Shikhar's grandmother, suffering from degeneration of bones, was not regular in her exercises after a knee replacement surgery. ''We noticed that senior citizens often do not stick to exercise routine. Our walker helps families to keep a check on them,'' said Kenny. http://www.dnaindia.com/mumbai/report_mumbai-students-develop-robots-to-improve-lives-of-the-blind-elderly_1588903 Register for AccessIndia convention 2011 at: http://www.accessindia.org.in/harish/convention.htm Search for old postings at: http://www.mail-archive.com/accessindia@accessindia.org.in/ To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. [AI] A visually impaired man his will to live life to the fullest
A visually impaired man his will to live life to the fullest DNA / Daniel Pinto / Monday, September 19, 2011 21:08 IST Heinrich Wagner is a visually impaired man, one who has brazenly performed numerous feats that would reduce most 'normal' human beings to quivering, cowering messes. Apart from participating in several endurance-testing marathons, the Capetonian has broken two land speed records, sky-dived from a height of 10,000 feet and bungee-jumped from one of the highest bridges in the world. Apart from cycling solo for 39km, Wagner has completed the 2011 ABSA Cape Epic (regarded as the Tour de France of mountain biking). Wagner took part in the Hong Kong Iron Man in 2006, completing 180km on a tandem bicycle in extreme weather conditions. He also tried his hand, successfully, at mountaineering and rafting. Oh, and he played in the 1998 blind cricket World Cup, which his side won. DNA's Daniel Pinto spoke to this indefatigable and unvanquished individual who is also a sought-after motivational speaker and was in Mumbai last week to address a gathering of top business executives. Excerpts: It's natural for people to dwell on things they can't change and attribute their failures to it. What made you different? I was born blind. For 25 years I was cross with god, the universe. Eighteen years ago I set sail on a 28-day journey from Cape Town to Rio [de Janeiro] with two blind mates and a hearing-impaired skipper. It was there that I experienced this big, beautiful world and realised that I was so small in the universe. It was then that I decided to live a full life and stop feeling sorry for myself and blaming the world for the fact that I couldn't see. What made you go in for adrenaline-pumping, physically challenging sports? It started out with me wanting to show the world, but then it came full circle after it became an option to market the abilities of differently abled people. I founded an organisation, VisionTree, in 2004 and all the adventurous activities I tackle are to fund it. After I completed a race on a tandem, the organisation was able to put six blind girls through six months of computer training. And the adrenaline rush, of course, is probably the closest I get to the sensation of sight. How do you deal with the concerns of family and friends about your physical well being? I respect them very much. I care for them, which is why when I'm about to face danger, I surround myself with professionals and people in the know, like terrain experts. When I broke the land speed record for the second time (after Wagner became the first South African to break a world land speed record in 2005, he went on to break the world blind land speed record by averaging a speed of 322.5kph in 2009), I consulted a professional racer in the UK and drove a Mercedes SL65 AMG which is a safe car. Adventure sports will always be risky. The element of risk adds to the adventure. My family has always been very supportive. When I broke the land speed record, it was two weeks before my wedding, and my wife was there at the event. So you can imagine! When it comes to making judgments and decisions, a lot depends on visual input. What system have you developed to aid you in your endeavours? Most of it comes from feeling. I'm good at picking things up through my senses. I've used my gut feeling. And, of course, I make mistakes, but that's why I travel. If you travel across different countries and experience different cultures, it expands your point of view and your frames of reference. How was your last visit to India? The last time I was in your country it was for the 1998 blind cricket World Cup in Delhi. I was playing for South Africa and there was huge support from the local crowd because we were up against Pakistan in the final. Are you a spiritual person? Yes, very much so. I think I am guided by my spirit. I believe in my instinct. I try to be in balance with my spiritual side. I spend time thinking about where I am at and I consider my opportunities. Tell us about your autobiographical show 'Bat Magic' that you perform at art festivals. The main driving force behind the show, which started in 2003, was to show the lighter side of living in darkness. The show managed to put across humour. It was very well received and when corporate presentations came along I was able to reuse material. Incidentally, the festival we launched the in 2003 was the place where I met my wife Melindi. As a man who has risen above circumstance, how would you define success? To use a quote, success is a progressive realisation of a worthwhile dream. Success is a vastly individual thing. But what's important is you have to live the ideal and it will become a reality. You have accomplished several things that are, in an understatement, astounding. What achievement are you proudest of? Accepting that I can't see since birth, and I've decided to accept things I can't

But certainly it is worth going for such devices, as you get excellent accurate material when compared with normal scanner scanned text. Re: [AI] menus in m s word 2007
jaws 10 and 11 also supports office 2007. the concerned is about accessing menus of office 2007 as office 2003. you can access it by pressing key combination of office 2003, but, jaws won't support. if you follow office 2007 ribben with its own keyboard commands, jaws will support it. - Original Message - From: Mahesh Panicker maheshspanic...@gmail.com To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Sent: Monday, September 19, 2011 7:00 PM Subject: Re: [AI] menus in m s word 2007 The best way to deal with is to use Jaws 12. Previous versions of Jaws do not quite support MS Office 2007 and later. In Jaws 12, there is the Virtual ribbon. Ones you enable the same, you should be able to access the options of each menu by pressing the down arrow key. If you don't hve Jaws 12, then its better to revert to Office 2003, as working with office 07 and earlier versions of Jaws is somewhat dificult unless you don't know most of the keybord commands. best, On 9/19/11, BHAWANI SHANKAR VERMA bsvermad...@gmail.com wrote: will jaws support clasic menus in office 2007 and 10? i had experienced that it shows clasic menu but jaws don't support it. thanks. - Original Message - From: Akhil malani.akhil...@gmail.com To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Sent: Monday, September 19, 2011 12:17 PM Subject: Re: [AI] menus in m s word 2007 Hello to all, I don't know whether this tool has been discussed in this conversation. But now, neither the menus could be focused through their commands nor they could be focused by pressing the right arrow after focusing the file menu. Hope now my doubt is clear. Renuka. Re: [AI] GMAT/GRE
Dear Pranay Ji, I would recommend calling ETS using skype or magic jack. We can also try to call the exam center where the respective person is planning to appear for this exam and ask them to get in touch with ETS here in the U.S. and help us in this regard. There in India, we may have problems in using the disability certificate obtained from a private practitioner or private centers for Govt purposes e.g., scholarships, concession certificates, identity cards etc. Here in the U.S. I've never had problems in those kind of petty issues and I did use the medical certificate that I obtained from Aravind Eyecare. If you still having problems in getting response from them, just let me know and I am more than happy to help. Thanking You.
