Second, I am amazed to see my capacity to cross known barriers without crashing on to them on a daily bases and the glass actually made me feel how close they are. We visually challenged are simply great! Third and this is something Austin didn’t mention, you can actually feel whether the barrier is on your right or left or even at the center and the glass in that way is very amazing. I guess I will feel it’s maximum use when I stay in Chennai due to my lack of familiarity of that city. Overall I would agree with Austin’s feedback on the device and it’s the great supplement to mobility aids like Cane, guide dogs etc. Remember that it is a supplement and not the substitute. Unlike some crazy scientists of India, the producer of this device is very clear on that. Vetri. So, his maternal grandparents are very rich. They have a very big house which is worth crores of rupees. So, his dad says that the house should be divided equally between his mother and her brother after the deaths of his maternal grandparents. His dad says that his mother should get a part of the house so that she will then have the resources to help him (my friend) if he fails to do something substantial in his life. His dad also works very hard to collect more and more resources just to make sure that my friend doesn't have to face a lot of problems in his future. So, my friend is mostly upset because his parents keep arguing about this matter all the time. He says that his dad also uses abusive language while arguing with his mother. His dad tries to prevent him (my friend) and his mother from meeting his grandparents, because his dad feels that his grandparents don't care about his future. His maternal grandparents say that they can't divide that particular house because their son (my friend's maternal uncle) stays in that house. They are, however, willing to give another house to my mother which is not as expensive as the house that my dad wants. My friend says that both his grandparents and his father are really nice people. He says that his father is worried about his future because of his visual impairment. And his father believes that his mother should also help in building a better future for my friend. My friend is a very capable guy. He always comes first in exams. So, I'm sure that he will not require anybody's assistance for building his career. Re: [AI] About MS access.
actually access is an object oriented program. it contains objects like tables, queries, forms, reports, relations, modules, etc. I really don't know what that jaws message mean. I learned access completely through help manual and few online tutorials for particular situations. tables and queries are quite accessible. but for forms, support is very poor. I have not worked with reports etc. for relations, it is purely graphic oriented and hence no jaws support. I did my works by using my partial sight to some extent. Re: [AI] Need help
Good evening madam, sorry to hear the fact. as someone said, in no case you should not have given the documents without receipt/acknowledgement. also why did you keep quite since march? immediately complain against that person in the court of state commissioner for persons with disabilities. if there is enough time before going to medical board, you can ask the reason for the same. but I think you should not miss attending before the board. does that person who harassed you has any personal revenge on you? some times it also happens. Dear list members, unfortunately I do not know what are the proposed amendments for the PWD act 1995, but I think one thing must be added to the act regarding abusing of disabled. as in the case of scheduled castes, we also must have law to punish the persons who scolds a disabled person with abusive words on his/her disability. if anybody makes abusive words on a dalit, he will be punished under the law. but there is no such law giving protection for disabled persons. learned list members, please throw some light on this matter. Re: [AI] Which will win? vostro or lenovo thinkpad?
Hi Salman, sorry for not being able to reply in time. I am also feeling that I could have bought 14 inch screen model instead of this big one. but as I have already spent 41 thousand rupees, and no one to give it, I have no thought of buying a new one. dell won't provide XP drivers and it is clear. you can run the OS without drivers. but for jaws, you must need audio and video drivers. ask them where can you download the drivers for XP and if they give you some URL, test that if you can get all drivers for that particular model for XP. this you have to do because if you get into trouble after purchase, you cannot revert your decision. sometimes customer care people mislead you. you must cross check the info given by them. it happened for me once with dell. the person told that it is with longer battery life but it was wrong. even in lenovo, it happened to me. he said that my model is with a 1000 mbps LAN card. but after purchasing I saw that it was with 100 mbps. so be careful. regarding durability of models, I don't know about HP. I have used ThinkPad for about 3 years. it was a t series machine. I handled it very roughly. but it sustained it except few problems. but it was IBM product. I don't know whether lenovo has retained the same quality for thinkpads. also t series are very expensive. only one machine in edge is below 50. I think it is e420 duq. it was 46000 plus when I enquired last month. all the others in the series are above 50. but being interested in high configuration, I bought my present machine. I think dell vostro is also good. but they are cheaper than thinkpads. regarding keypad: you can get scroll lock by pressing function + insert. also you can get the following keys. function + home: pause function + end: break but why do you need scroll lock? I am also feeling some discomfort but it is due to different keypad layout of this from my earlier ThinkPad. one more thing, you get XP drivers for the above ThinkPad model. if you get drivers for dell in whatever the web page they give you, you can go for it. but I am not recommending you against Win 7. if you are comfortable with it, you can go for any model without bothering about drivers. I later on had an opportunity to spend 30 minutes with him over cup of tea and actually demonstrated how difficult it was to identify Rs. 1 coin, Rs. 2 coin and I actually have to take sighted help to identify them. I leverage on my US experience where coins such as penny, dime and quarter can easily be identified based on their size variance. I did inform him about our two beloved friends harish and Rajesh and he was not aware that visually impaired folks even work for him. He did take two visiting cards from me and I was under the impression that nothing is going to happen this time. Same principal would apply out of sight is out of mind. Today I got a call from General manager RBI Calcutta inviting me for a meeting next week to discuss this in details. Let's keep our finger across and hope something arise out of this. Thanks and will keep you posted. good idea! why cant you talk about talking ATMs in your meeting? Umesha - Original Message - From: Mujtaba Merchant mujta...@gmail.com To: asifmaiq...@hotmail.com; Access India accessindia@accessindia.org.in Sent: Friday, December 16, 2011 4:21 PM Subject: Re: [AI] Accessible Coin in India Dear Asif, This is awesome news! Wish you all the best in your quest in addressing this issue with the coins. There is so much effort on identifying the coins as you mentioned, you will find it untrue to believe but a lot of sighted people also complain about the same. This I believe is the first step in addressing how a visually challenged person handles his money Your mail also has a surprise that the RBI Governer was not aware that his team had employed members of the VI community. I will not term it ignorant but sometimes people are just lost in a system. I would also like you to read this on wikipedia and gather some material for your meeting, the link is below. A brief on what to expect on the link is that it talks about the first ATM machine introduced in the world for visually disabled people, in other words a talking ATM. My point in sharing this is simply that if they can do it why cant we? Again wishing you all the best with your meeting with them. BTW Iam aware that there are some talking cash counting machines available in UK/US/Canada but the challenge is will it recognise indian currency? These machines are made for Dolor/Pound curency. In the current scenario, I am looking for a Talking Cash Counter machine which can identify/count/sort indian rupee/coin, Also many banks have cash counting machines but the output is in LED display - Not accessible to visually impaired, Again the challenge here is how can we make led talk/VI friendly. There are some speech enabler solution to make talking LED, Again it is in US is very very costly. Re: [AI] Accessible Coins in India
Hello Umesha and Asif, The talking ATM's are a long pending and forgotten promise made by many Indian Banks. Banks like the state Bank Of India made some random promise of installing around 7000 talking ATM's for the disabled. This was a big hog wash talk and covered by a lot of media including Business Standard and the locally popular Deccan Herald News Paper. It has also come to my attention that this news was shared with the Access India mailing list somewhere in 2010. Extracts of the email and news shared are below, they talk about getting these ATM'S running in a months time from which date I have no clue. The goon bank of India ICICI who's CEO boasts that their bank has already instaled its first Talking ATM in 2003, may be it is in his private farm house or his local bar. Because thats where he employs his collection department people! Since most of these talks took place at Mumbai the financial capital of India, request list members from Mumbai to share if there has been any developments of this sort. Without further adue the story below: India's largest lender, State Bank of India (SBI) plans to introduce 7,000 voice enabled ATMs across the country for visually challenged customers beginning next month. Out of our 18,500 ATMs, 7,000 will be made voice enabled for visually challenged people. We expect to launch these talking ATMs starting next month, SBI's General Manager (Alternate Channels) Amitabh Kumar said at a CII seminar in Mumbai on Thursday. These voice enabled ATMs, customised with headphones and braille key pads, will offer services like funds transfer and downloading of account statements, Kumar said. Presently, SBI is testing voice enabled ATMs with its partners NCR and Diebold and expects to make these operational in a month's time, he said. SBI plans to install these ATMs in metro, urban and semi urban towns across the country. The country has 10.6 million visually challenged people and it is the duty of the banks to help these people to meet their banking needs, ICICI Bank's CEO and Managing Director, Chanda Kochhar, speaking at the seminar, said. ICICI Bank has installed its first talking ATM in 2003. Over the years, the bank has also ensured that the basic banking facilities can be used by physically handicapped people, Kochhar said. Re: [AI] Problem about internet explorer
Hello Ravi, This is the strangest problem I have heard ever even as a previously sighted person I never came across a challenge like this! Besides the point, why would you want to press alt d when your focuss is already in the address bar of the browser? OR do you press it when the page loads and you want to go to a different web location. I am guessing it is the later. In that case I want you to check your JAWS application settings for internet explorer. To do this launch internet explorer and press the insert v key then virtualise the window of the settings by pressing insert alt and the w key. this should open a virtualised window where you can copy the text and paste it anywhere. Just mail it to me and I can look at it and suggest else you find something different please change accordingly. Vetri. Re: [AI] a nightmarish experience using IRCTC
I regularly book tickets on this sight. it is not totally accessible but we can manage with booking. Bharat, follow the table of trains, select the class with help of radio buttons. follow the table headings you can easily identify the class by the order in which table headings are arranged. select the class by checking the radio button. after the page had been refreshed, you will find the dates and availability on that date in a table which jaws reads comfortably. press enter on the book button below you will be directed to a page where passenger details had to be entered. now here use Webvisum on Firefox or capture tools on I.E to solve the image capture. enter on go and enter on make payment in the next page after verifying your details. you will be redirected to the gateway page where you need to select your desired option of payment using radio buttons. after that selection you need to enter your Card/net banking details to process your ticket. it is bit difficult but definitely manageable. i have booked hundreds of tickets using this web during even on the Tatkal timings during which the responsiveness would be very low.
