Re: [AI] Braille newspaper shows blind new world

2012-04-09 Thread Prashant Ranjan Verma
If the publication is delivered twice a month it should be called a magazine
instead of newspaper. And the visually impaired is not that deprived of
sources of news. By the time the Braille newspaper arrives all the news in
it would be outdated and would have been discussed and set aside on radio
and television.
It is perfectly possible to deliver Braille newspaper on a daily basis using
technology. But unfortunately some people are getting misguided.

Braille newspaper shows blind new world

RICK WESTHEAD MUMBAI |

Parimala Bhat reads Sparshdnyan, one of the world's few newspapers to cater
to the visually impaired.
rom delicious billion-dollar scandals to uplifting tales of the human
condition and narratives about the country's economic progress, India boasts
a bountiful supply of compelling stories.

Parimala Bhat wants to know about all of them. But the 52-year-old Mumbai
resident is blind and for years she had to rely on TV news channels to
satisfy her craving for news.

No more.

For the past several years, Bhat has subscribed to Sparshdnyan, a local
newspaper that has carved itself an unusual niche in India's surging media
industry: the paper, whose name translates to knowledge by touch is
written in Braille, making it one of the world's few newspapers to cater to
the visually impaired.

You know how satisfying it is to sit and just read, says Bhat, a
healthcare worker with Air India. It's the same for the blind. The TV and
radio are fine, but I love being able to save my paper for the night-time
when I'm by myself and get involved in a story. It's a different sense
reading the paper instead of listening to news. It's just incredibly
satisfying.

Published twice a month, Sparshdnyan is sent to about 400 subscribers in
Maharashtra. While its circulation may be modest, readership is growing
fast. Most issues are sent to institutes for the blind, where each copy is
read by an estimated 60 people. The paper's readership is estimated at about
24,000, says editor Swagat Thorat.

Three-year-old Sparshdnyan would seem to be a notable success story in
India's vibrant media sector. A team of local journalists volunteer their
time to write for the paper, which averages about 48 pages per issue, and
readers and government officials alike praise its coverage of local politics
and social issues, Thorat says.

We get about 600 to 700 letters to the editor every month, says the
50-year-old. We have readers from ten-years-old to 80 but I think more than
half, probably 60%, are between 18 and 35.

Thorat isn't the first news editor who has recognised there's a market for
the visually impaired.

Some newspapers, such as the Wall Street Journal, offer a service that reads
newspapers over the phone at a 300-words-a-minute clip, twice the speed of
the average conversation. It maybe informative, but it can hardly be called
relaxing. There are also computer programs offering text-to-speech programs
that similarly read stories aloud.

And while technology sure has improved the immediacy of news for the
visually impaired, there are still a handful of newspapers that rely on
centuries-old Braille.

A student at the Royal Institute for Blind Youth in Paris, Louis Braille in
the 1820s adapted a cipher language of bumps, called night writing, which
was created by a French Army officer for soldiers to send secret messages in
the dark. Braille developed a method of writing using a pattern of dots
aligned in two vertical rows - the letter A for instance, is a represented
by a single dot in the upper left corner.

Braille newspapers have been published in locations including Italy, Japan,
Ethiopia and California.

But even Braille supporters say there are drawbacks to the practice.
The paper required for it is expensive and thick, making publications
expensive to produce. The National Braille Press in Boston, for instance,
recently printed the Harry Potter series in Braille, a 56-volume effort with
each volume nearly a foot tall.

Sparshdnyan's news slant is eclectic. A recent issue featured the review of
an autobiography by a local college professor who is blind, an editorial on
corruption, an issue that has dominated headlines across newspapers this
summer, and a feature story about doctors who overmedicate.

There was also a section giving advice about public speaking, a travel story
on the Maharashtra district of Raigad, where tourists flock to hiking trails
1,000 metres above sea level, a recipe for keema pulao, and a general
knowledge quiz.

We cover almost everything, Thorat says, but there are a few topics we
don't like.

One, surprisingly, is India's national passion:

Ya sir, Amen.
It should be called fortnightly magazine.
Sunday Guardian editor MJ akbar should know this☺
moreover, sir, how many of us access internet or any technology which
enables us to get updated, very few.
hense, this would serve its purpose for those who can't afford or
don't have privilege to roam around the world virtually.

A recent issue featured the review of
an autobiography by a local college professor who is blind, an editorial on
corruption, an issue that has dominated headlines across newspapers this
summer, and a

Re: [AI] Attention: Disability study brings out hard facts in Odisha

2012-04-09 Thread avinash shahi
Hi merchant

Your pain is shared by most of us visually challenged collectively.
Things are not turning as they should move.
But still one has to live, and strive to live with dignity.
I just would like to add what Immanuel Wallerstein wrote in last year
published book: The Modern World-System IV: Centrist Liberalism
Triumphant, 1789-1914, pp xvii + 377, $26.95.
Inequality is a fundamental reality of the modern world-system, as it
has been of every known historical system. What is different, what is
particular to historical capitalism is that equality has been
proclaimed as its objective (and indeed as its achievement) – equality
in the marketplace, equality before the law, the fundamental social
equality of all individuals endowed with equal rights. The great
political question of the modern world, has been how to reconcile the
theoretical embrace of equality with the continuing and increasingly
acute polarisation of real-life opportunities and satisfactions that
has been its outcome (W4, p 143).
This applies to our struggle also.
So keep nurturing hope for betterment.
And don't remember who said but said quite correctly: when going gets
tough, tough gets going
So let's cheers man.
Thank you.

 Dire Straits.

Yes, we have amazing NGO's and support groups all over the country, what
after that? Are we accomodated in the society seeminglessly? How are we to
support ourselves if we aren't given the opportunity in the first place? If
you want to talk about independence their is a lot of gap from what is and
what should be, for example, I can't withdraw my own money from the ATM
without sighted assistance. The other damn day, at the bank I was ignored
when trying to communicate a change in address to the bank. I had to throw a
tantrum like a 5 year old to get them to panic and then attend to my querry.
And guess what? I haven't received any confirmation from the bank that the
address on their records has been updated! Mediocre or stereo type, these
MBA's that sit behind a desk at a bank think they rule the world with their
attitudes, basically no common sense was granted to them when falling out of
the womb of their mother. I pitty a society like this and worst of all a
government that is laid back on such issues!

I am venting this because a year back, I was a part of this society. Today I
feel alienated to their customs and attitudes. I also respect and understand
every disabled persons plight in getting something done in their life.
Having to live with a compromising and patient attitude for the things that
can be rightfully honored elsewise to a person who waddles his ego and
 wallet.

My sincere apologies if my email has hurt any sentiments. Kindly forgive the

Dear Rajesh,

here is the complete solution.

1. run the open office application and minimize it. you may close it
too it does not make any difference though it is just to initiate some
aspects.

2. Open the command prompt, navigate to the program folder
within the Open office 3 folder. in the following way, change directory,
EG(Cd program filesopen office 3programs

3. once you are in the
folder type the following command. All that is in the square brackets
with out changing any thing, pls note that there is space before hi fen,
there is a semicolon and inverted commas in the command.

[soffice
-headless -accept=socket,host=127.0.0.1,port=8100;urp; -
nofirststartwizard]

come out of the command prompt. EXIT

Download
the Folder from Here [1] or the link is
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/69683716/jodconverter-2.2.rar;

Procedure.

Kindly extract all the contents to D:

there is a file called
Process.vbs

right click it to open it and it opens in notepad.

by
default i have set the search folder to d:

on double clicking the
process.vbs file it automatically lists the .doc files from d:, in all
its folders and sub folders and creates a folder called Convert in d:.

here there shall be a file that is automatically formed by the name
kiran.bat which is your batch file populated with the necessary commands
to perform the conversion.

please wait for a little while as it
searches all of the D: for all the files. it might take a couple of
minutes or more as there shall be large no of the .doc files. do not
interrupt the process and it is a sure shot program with no defects.

once this file is formed just double click the populated Kiran.bat and
all the PDF files in the respective folders shall be formed.

Works
100% on XP as there is no security issues with file creations, there are
constraints in running this program in Win 7 due to administrative
privileges. did not work upon it as it was not needed.

Done you shall
find the respective PDf's with respective names in respective folders.

If you have any questions using the same i am always available with
you for the support.

I shall charge for the software once you can use
this and the charge shall be blessings and your friendship.

Warm
Regards,

Kiran S Deshpande

All the changes in file names or drive
names can be done in the convert.vbs

it is convenient to change and
does not damage any system.

 SUBJECT: Batch
converting Bulk doc files to PDF

Dear Rajesh and all AI members,

Further to Rajesh Ji's Request of needing a program to convert the
documents in bulk to PDF, I am glad to inform you that the routine is
complete and am ready to give the same to you. The following are the
things that are needed.

 1. JDK needs to be installed.

 2. JRE
needs to be installed.

 3. Open office needs to be installed on the
system.

 4. The convert program needs to be run ( it is
purposefully kept as a command line interface).

 Features:

Batch processing of all the DOC files in a folder to respective pdf's.

Most important thing is it supports unicode fonts.

 maintains
all the layouts of diagrams, images without changing any parameters of
the original file(Tested on various samples).

 Non Commercial and
free.

Processing time per conversion is 2 - 3 seconds.

 How
it works.

there is a subordinate Program that runs and creates a
.BAT file with the path name and filename of all the files that are to
be converted in the given directory appending to the .BAT file. where
the first word convert.exe is a constant and the file name and path
name for input and output are dynamically appended to the bat file in
the first phase.

 EG:-

 convert.exe C:test1.doc (space)
c:test1.pdf;

 convert.exe C:test2.doc (space) c:test2.pdf;

 convert.exe C:test3.doc (space) c:test3.pdf

 this is the way
that BAt file looks like populating all the names from the program and
executing it all simultaneously.

I can put all this on a CD and
courier it to you as the openoffice Installation is 156 MB. with the
release notes and the Installer. Alternatively if you install all 3
components i can upload the program to the dropbox and send the link on
the same.

This program is just 3 MB in size.

Re: [AI] Books in audio from Bookshare.org

2012-04-09 Thread Nirmal Verma
Dear Shona,

Have you tried the advanced search and site search feature on bookshare? If
you are a bookshare member then you would have known that bookshare 'site
search' feature is powered by google.

for the limited number of books on competitive exams, bookshares hands are
tied down by the copyright law. it is still in the parliament waiting to be
cleared. A big movement on this is already going on and I hope that light
comes sooner than later. if you or any list member knows some publisher and
can get permission from the publishers to convert in accessible format then
he/she can get in touch with Saksham trust who are looking after the
bookshare chapter in India.

those of you who really need the materials can avail of the concessional
hindi o c r services offered. the accuracy level is gettting better every
day and sometimes you can get results as good as 99 percent.

Hi Mujtaba,

Let me tell you my experience. Two years back, my computer was
infected with turns of viruses and destroyed data. As I am not using
any antivirus at that time, the viruses entered in to my PC. Then I
have downloaded AVG free version and installed it in my PC. When AVG
get installed, it immediately started to detect viruses and it began
to display various options like Move to volt, Move to folder and there
are more options not remembering right now. Finally, the AVG
successfully destroyed all viruses in my PC. From then onwards I am
using AVG. And it is not limited to detect and destroy viruses from
PC, but it also provides powerful security protection on the internet
and social networking websites. And last but not the least it is free
software for personal use and liable to get free updates forever.

many antivirus are accessible through keyboard, such as quickheal and

Re: [AI] problem in Internet explorer

2012-04-09 Thread Mujtaba Merchant
Hello Uma,

I think IE is crashing when you are trying to download any files. Try removing
the temporary internet files on your computer, follow the instructions below:

Close all Internet browsers.

1. Open the run dialog box from the start menu.
2. Type %temp% in the edit box of the run dialog box.
3. Once the temp folder opens, select all files in it.
4. Hit the key combination Shift+Delete to delete all files permanently.
5. If you get a prompt saying are you sure you want to delete multiple files or
the file is a read only file, hit the yes to all button on the dialog box.

Then restart your computer and try opening your mail account and downloading
the same files. If this does not help, get back to me on when this problem
started. Did you make any changes in JAWS or browser settings?

Re: [AI] problem in Internet explorer

2012-04-09 Thread Uma VR
good morning,

if we delete the entire templates, whether any of the files or any of
the softwares will get affected because I have many files relating to
my subject.
since, I am the new user of computers, I don't know anything about
templates. thats why I am asking this question.

 Hello Uma,

I think IE is crashing when you are trying to download any files. Try
removing the temporary internet files on your computer, follow the
 instructions below:

 Close all Internet browsers.

 1. Open the run dialog box from the start menu.
 2. Type %temp% in the edit box of the run dialog box.
 3. Once the temp folder opens, select all files in it.
 4. Hit the key combination Shift+Delete to delete all files permanently.
 5. If you get a prompt saying are you sure you want to delete multiple files
or the file is a read only file, hit the yes to all button on the dialog
 box.

Then restart your computer and try opening your mail account and downloading
the same files. If this does not help, get back to me on when this problem
started. Did you make any changes in JAWS or browser settings?

Subject: [AI] problem in Internet explorer

   good morning folks,

I hope everyone is doing well.
I have a problem in internet explorer.
when I tried to download the attachments sent by others. I am not able
to download it. when I click on link scan and download, I am getting a
   dialogue box that
Internet Explorer is stopped working. so, close the programme button.
I don't know what is the real problem behind it.
I am using Internet Explorer 8 version.

when I tried to download the same with the help of Morizilla firefox,
   JAWS is not even speaking.
Gmail is getting opened. but, JAWS is not speaking

what would be the reason behind it?

please folks suggest me to resolve this issue. I want to download the
   files sent by my friends.
