I agree with mohan. on the second point. you could request NIVH to directly call for your results in ceal cover from School of learning to ascertain your eligibility. this process should be undertaken in writing and not verbally enclosing your undertaking not to claim your candidature if you're not found eligible and acceptance of this as a provisional admission . we understand that it is very difficult situation but you are making best of your efforts and congratulations for that. we wish you succeed in your fight! best wishes. [AI] Accessibility issues with the new Yahoo Groups
Hello listers I wonder what is really wrong with these websites? They try fixing things that aren't broken and end up messing it all up. Last month there was a discussion on AI regarding the lack of accessible sites to check and book flight tickets in the context of the inaccessibility of the revamped cleartrip site. Unfortunate to note that nothing has changed there. In fact, the list of obnoxious sites are only going up. The latest to join is Yahoo. Yahoo's groups services used to be used by many screen reader users. But with the recent revamp, it has become inaccessible in significant ways. It is difficult to move around easily on the list home page for an ordinary user. If you are a moderator, then your life is cooked. Can't really do any of the important tasks with Jaws or NVDA as many of the links just appear as plain text that is not clickable. Yahoo as always, doesn't really care. The recent revamp of googlegroups had made life difficult there, what can we do? Is there any provision whereby we can take these people to the CCPD or any such authority? What could be an accessible group alternative for us? Just feeling incredibly frustrated... -- Mahesh S. [AI] come-on beta testers! its time to test jaws 15 public beta
Hi all jaws 15 public beta is out this is the write-up on it by freedomscientific jaws is now available to download in English and Spanish You can download it from http://www.freedomscientific.com/downloads/jaws/jaws-public-beta.asp The following features are new to JAWS 15. For more information and complete demonstrations, listen to the August 2013 FSCast. Object Navigation Using the Touch Cursor Certain applications, especially many of the modern-style apps found in Windows 8, do not always work as expected with JAWS when navigating with the standard cursors such as the PC and Virtual PC cursors. Activating the new Touch Cursor enables you to use the ARROW keys on your computer's keyboard, or the controls on your braille display, to navigate through the actual objects in an application similar to using gestures on the touch screen of a tablet. Application objects include everything from menu bars, toolbars, and progress bars, to form controls, regions, links, etc. Press SHIFT+NUM PAD PLUS, or SHIFT+CAPS LOCK+SEMICOLON if using the laptop keyboard layout, to activate the Touch Cursor. To turn it off, activate one of the other cursors, like the PC Cursor (NUM PAD PLUS). The Touch Cursor is enabled by default in certain Windows 8 applications to improve navigation. These apps include News, Weather, and Store. Whenever you move focus to one of these apps, the Touch Cursor is automatically activated. To automatically enable the Touch Cursor in another application, press INSERT+V to open Quick Settings while focused in the application where you want to use the Touch Cursor, expand the Touch Cursor Options group, and then select Automatic Activation. You must do this for every application where you want to have JAWS automatically turn on the Touch Cursor. Once the Touch Cursor is active, pressing RIGHT or LEFT ARROW will move to the next or previous object on the screen. This is the same as doing a left or right flick on a touch screen. Pressing UP or DOWN ARROW will move to the previous or next object by type. By default, these commands will move by region. This is the same as doing an up or down flick on a touch screen. To change what object type these commands move by, press PAGE UP or PAGE DOWN to cycle through the available types. For example, if you want the UP or DOWN ARROW keys to move by headings, press PAGE UP or PAGE DOWN until you hear headings. Now, pressing UP or DOWN ARROW will move to the next or previous heading. Press CTRL+HOME to move to the first object and press CTRL+END to move to the last object. To announce the current object, press INSERT+UP ARROW. To perform a Say All, which will cause the Touch Cursor to move through the application and speak each object, press INSERT+DOWN ARROW. As you navigate using the ARROW keys, the system focus does not follow the Touch Cursor. This allows you to freely navigate objects without changing the position of the PC Cursor or mouse pointer. Pressing SPACEBAR or ENTER on the current element will move focus to that element and perform the appropriate action similar to double tapping on a touch screen. For instance, opening a menu, selecting a check box, or activating a button or link. In addition, a rectangle will be displayed around the currently selected object to visually indicate the location of the Touch cursor for sighted users. If the Touch Cursor is on an object containing text, such as the body of a news article, you can press INSERT+ENTER or NUM PAD SLASH to enable Text Review. In this mode, you can use the ARROW keys as well as all other standard reading commands to read the text as if you were reading a regular document. Pressing the ESC key will exit Text Review and return to Touch Cursor navigation. A good example of using the Touch Cursor is in the News app, where it is enabled by default. Once the app launches, you could press DOWN ARROW to move to the /Top Stories region and then press RIGHT ARROW to move to a particular story. When you find the article you want to read, you can press INSERT+ENTER or NUM PAD SLASH to switch to Text Review so you can use the ARROW keys or the braille display to read the article. Once you are finished, press ESC to close Text Review and then use RIGHT or LEFT ARROW to select another article from the current region, or UP or DOWN ARROW to move to a different region. Touch Cursor Navigation Quick Keys While the Touch Cursor is active, you can use Navigation Quick Keys to quickly jump to various types of objects, such as regions, headings, links, form controls, and so on. These commands are similar to the Navigation Quick Keys that are used when navigating HTML and PDF documents with the Virtual PC Cursor. By default, Touch Navigation Quick Keys are not enabled when the Touch Cursor is activated. This allows you to fully use applications that support typing in the main window. For example, the News app lets you type so you can quickly locate specific stories. If you would like Touch Navigation Quick keys to

[AI] View about free screen reader NVDA
Dear Dipendra Sir, I am very excited after learning the update on development of NVDA in India in your post. I like and always promoted NVDA and had setup a training center at NAB Kolhapur having NVDA as screen reader. Also currently teaching batches of school children at Thane using NVDA only. Being a computer trainer for blind and a user of NVDA, I will surely support the developers by testing functionality and posting issues and bugs. Further, as per a statistics from NVDA website average more than 11,000 users are using NVDA per day. in Brazil about 2000 and United States about 1900, where as in India number of users are less than 300. I am sure they are more than this number about India. NVDA Version 2013.1 works fine in MS Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Skype, Nero, Google Chrome and other popular applications at basic level as well as for some extend to advance level. [AI] Indian Actor to Host ‘Nazar Ya Nazariya’ TV Series for People with Vision
Indian Actor to Host ‘Nazar Ya Nazariya’ TV Series for People with Vision Disabilities Asia-Pacific Sep 5, 2013 Indian actor Naseeruddin Shah has associated with a TV series”Nazar Ya Nazariya”, which will feature real life stories of achievers who are blind and low vision in the country. He believes stereotypes related to disabilities need to be broken. The actor will introduce and sign off each episode of the show, which will otherwise be hosted by Harsh Chhaya. Launched by Score Foundation, an NGO which works towards empowering people who are blind and low vision, the 13-part series, which will be aired on Doordarshan, is aimed at questioning common perceptions and focusing on the immense possibilities of life with blindness. “When I did ‘Sparsh’ in the early 1980s, I had the opportunity of interacting with several individuals who are blind and low vision. I realized that the problem is not with the Nazar (sight) it is with the Nazariya (attitude),”Naseeruddin said in a statement. “What is important here is that people like you and me need to break away from the societal stereotypes and commonly held perceptions about disability and success or happiness. “This is the main message that we are trying to drive through this television series and we hope that we are able to achieve this goal by reaching out to more and more people of this country,” he added. The TV series is funded by Sight savers International, an international charity organization, Tech Mahindra Foundation and Union Bank of India. The themes showcased on the show will range from education, employment, business, art and culture to marriage and relationships. “Nazar Ya Nazariya” will go on air Sep 21. [AI] New toy helps students with vision disabilities feel the words
New toy helps students with vision disabilities feel the words Asia-Pacific Sep 4, 2013 AHMEDABAD, INDIA: While braille helps people who are blind read, educators have been unending tested by the challenge to make their students visualize the concepts they are learning. A toy that a postgraduate student of the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad, has collaborated in developing may well turn out to be the “holy braille” of education for people who are blind and low vision, helping them feel the world around them. The student, Tania Jain, and a Hyderabad-based ophthalmologist Dr Anthony Vipin Das, have created ‘Fittle’ (Fit the Puzzle) that will enable children with vision disabilities learn letters of braille and sense the objects the words convey. FITTLE puzzle for the word fish. Fittle involves breaking down a word into as many blocks as the letters in the word. For example, FISH is constructed by joining together four puzzle blocks which have letters F, I, S, H on them, each imprinted in braille. So when a student with vision disabilities fits all the letters together, he or she can read the word ‘fish’ as well as feel the shape of the fish that the blocks will form. In the first phase of the project, the shapes for 26 different words are being prepared through 3D designing of the puzzle blocks. The blocks are obtained through 3D printing. “This method will radically change the learning process of braille,” said Tania who is working with her classmate Debanshu Bhaumik on the project. “I have already undertaken trials at blind schools and the response has been great.” The first Fittle series is being prepared which will be included in the curriculum of LV Prasad Eye Institute in Hyderabad. “Of all with people vision disabilities, only 10 percent know braille,” said Das, a consultant at LV Prasad Eye Institute. “This tool will help blind kids at a young age to learn braille and will also give them a good idea of the world around them.” With current technology, Fittle can be downloaded through open source platforms from the website . The letters can be printed by anyone with a 3D printer. Since the cost of input is high as it involves 3D printing the team behind Fittle has sought crowd funding through a website. Fittle was first presented by Tania at ‘Design Innovation You’ workshop in the first week of July organized by Camera Culture Group of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s media lab on the BITS Pilani campus in Hyderabad. The theme of the workshop was ‘Engineering the Eye’. [AI] HIMS Releases Update to Popular Braille Display
HIMS Releases Update to Popular Braille Display Americas Sep 4, 2013 AUSTIN, TEXAS: Navigating a computer, smartphone or tablet is different for those who are blind. Instead of a monitor, keyboard and mouse, many blind computer users use talking screen readers and refreshable Braille displays. These Braille displays translate the on-screen text into Braille and represent it using hundreds of tiny movable Braille dots organized into any number of characters, or “cells”. Austin, Texas-based HIMS Inc. has recently released a firmware update (new version 1.1) for its popular Braille display product called Braille EDGE 40. The Braille EDGE 40 is much more than simply an alternative to a computer monitor for blind users. It can be connected to a PC, MAC, iOS or Android device and includes keys that can be used for input as well as navigation. HIMS Braille EDGE 40 also has built-in notetaking features, which can be used alone or in combination with standard word processing software. Students can take Braille EDGE with them to class for independent notetaking and editing without having a connection to any computer until they get home again. One of the new features in Braille EDGE version 1.1 is the very unique Terminal Clipboard, which allows users to compose and edit text on the Braille EDGE and then insert the text to the working document on their computer, phone or tablet once it’s ready. This is especially useful when using certain screen readers that translate as you type, sometimes creating unintended text. Braille EDGE version 1.1 also now supports reading and editing in TXT, DOC, DOCX and RTF documents in contracted grade 2 Braille. Access to these popular formats is extremely important for those who work or go to school and need to receive and share documents with their sighted colleagues. The addition of Danish, Turkish and Hebrew support now brings the total number of languages supported to 17. Because Braille cells can represent characters in virtually any language, users who live in other countries, or who are multi-lingual do not need more than one Braille EDGE 40 Braille Display. Switching from one language to another is as easy as choosing a new menu option from the Braille EDGE 40 menu options. [AI] FW: A Blind Researcher Takes Aim at the Future of Accessible Tech
Friends This forward would continue to kick off interest in science subjects.Read on Harish Kotian From: Mujtaba Merchant [mailto:mujta...@gmail.com] Sent: 11 September 2013 07:29 To: Mujtaba Merchant Subject: A Blind Researcher Takes Aim at the Future of Accessible Tech Got this article from a blog shared by a friend that works with accessibility in my company. Worth the share and read! A blind Ph.D. student studying computer science at North Carolina State University, Sina Bahram is doing innovative research to take human-computer interaction to the next level. He's working on an application for eyes-free exploration of graphical information that he hopes will change the way people interact with devices, and will facilitate collaboration between individuals with visual impairments, like himself, and their sighted peers. In a recent interview with us, Mr. Bahram shared details about his research, an insight into the exciting future of accessible technology, and a bit about his personal history with Learning Ally. Bahram's interest in accessible technology has been piqued for as long as he can remember, even tracing back to when he was a young student trying to decipher how Learning Ally's audiobook cassette recordings provided tones for page and chapter indication. He used audiobooks extensively through middle school, taking a multisensory approach to reading science textbooks by reading braille and listening to the audio at the same time. Then throughout high school and undergraduate school, he incorporated increasingly sophisticated technologies into his toolbox. His interest in accessible tech and computers as an instrument for his personal success developed into a desire to research and design future generations of technology, which is exactly what he is working on now. The system he's developing is called TIKISI, which stands for touch it, key it, speak it, referring to the fact that there are multiple ways of accessing the information, which is known as a multimodal interface. This means you're using different types of interactions-both touch and speech-to give and get information from the computer. This technology can obviously have a lot of benefit for someone who's blind, Bahram says. But there's also the principle of universal design here. The application could be useful for anyone. Think about driving a car and not having to look at a touch screen in order to use it. TIKISI has particular value to STEM subjects, which make frequent use of maps, charts, graphs, diagrams, and other visual representations of data, because it uses multi-modal interaction. One of the first applications of TIKISI is an overlay for Google Maps, Bahram explains. I was tired of opening a map and hearing nothing from my screen reader. The TIKISI application registers where you're touching the map and reads back information. There are multiple overlays to switch between depending on what information you want to hear, for example, city names or coordinates. The screen is very sensitive, so you can get highly detailed feedback and use a variety of gestures to trigger different responses. There is also a user-controlled grid that can be dialed in or out to give more or less pinpointed information. It would be a big step forward if blind people no longer had to depend on niche products. This level of interactivity has yet to be seen in mainstream devices. Current accessible technologies have made a lot of progress in recent years, but haven't yet fully evolved for modern interfaces. For example, the screen-reader and related accessibility features built into Apple devices work great for text and standard user interface components but lack the ability to interactively navigate images. Incorporating more concepts from human-computer interaction research is the next logical step in the evolution of accessible tech. Working in the rapidly changing world of technology, part of Bahram's job is to anticipate what the next major developments and trends will be, and then to help implement them. He's optimistic about future technologies and their implications for the visually impaired. In the next five years, I foresee an accelerated integration between our everyday lives and the technologies we use. If you go back, telephones used to be wired to the house; then they were mobile and you were able to carry them around, but they were still primarily telephones. Then when smartphones entered the market, we were able to take the internet with us. Now technology like Apple's SIRI is ubiquitous, where people can ask simple questions of their devices. It's not to the point where people can speak normally and conversationally with their devices, but this tech is improving. I think people are going to get more and more comfortable interacting with technology in a direct and personalized way. Bahram also believes the paradigm of how and where we use computers will change.
