[AI] Aadhaar is not compulsory, SC makes it clear
Aadhaar is not compulsory, SC makes it clear comments powered by Disqus Home India Report Aadhaar is not compulsory, SC makes it clear Tuesday, Sep 24, 2013, 9:46 IST | Place: New Delhi | Agency: DNA Kanu Sarda Mayank Aggarwal Dealing a body blow to the UPA-II's ambitious Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) project, the Supreme Court on Monday said Aadhaar cards are not mandatory for availing government services such as domestic cooking gas, food subsidy, marriage certificates, salary reimbursements and other services. The SC order comes after the parliamentary standing committee on finance rejected the National Identification Authority of India Bill that would have given legal backing to the Aadhaar project. The government has been under attack for going ahead with the project without any statutory backing. UIDAI, headed by the former Infosys chief, Nandan Nilekani, has so far issued 40.29 crore Aadhaar cards. The government was targeting a number of 60 crore cards by 2014. The home ministry had also raised concerns on Aadhaar's biometric data collection and verification methods stating that they do not meet security criteria. Besides, there has been a turf war with the Home Ministry's National Population Register which too has been documenting photographs, fingerprints and iris scan of all citizens. The court's directions came after a former judge of the Karnataka High Court, KS Puttaswamy, filed a PIL alleging that the government was bypassing parliament by going ahead with the distribution of UID numbers and cards. The Supreme Court told the Centre not to make the Unique Identification Card mandatory for availing government schemes. The court said that the identification card could not be mandatory for states to provide services either. [AI] Monthly Knowledge Sharing Session - Demo of Usability of a Touch-Screen Android Phone
Dear All, Greetings from Blind Graduates' Forum of India (BGFI). As part of our Monthly Knowledge Sharing Session, this time we take pleasure in inviting you to a demonstration of the usability of touch-screen Android phones using the free in-built screenreader Talkback. As phones with Symbian operating systems are no longer being manufactured and phones with physical keyboards are a rarity, we are gradually switching to touch-screen phones with Android operating system since they are an accessible and cheaper alternative as compared to an iPhone. The idea of using a touch-screen phone grips many blind people with fear. But once you will have attended this session in which a panel of blind persons making use of different brands of phones will be exhibiting the usability of a touch-screen phone, you are sure to walk home with enthusiasm and confidence of using touch-screen devices. The following points are expected to be covered: a.. Answering calls. b.. Rejecting unwanted calls. c.. Dropping received call. d.. Reading caller info. e.. Dialing numver. f.. Dialing from contact. g.. Adding, updating and deleting contacts. h.. Setting up a conference. i.. Using i v r. j.. Reading, writing and sending sms. k.. Using email client to write and read emails. l.. Moving mails to folders and setting rules. m.. Using browser and navagating by elements, n.. Searching and installing apps from the Play Store. o.. Using newspaper app like times of india. Those who wish to bring along their Android phones are requested also to cary their earphones/headphones. Since there are time constraints and a lot to be covered, we would be unable to provide individual attention. The session will start at 3:00 PM sharp. To help us cover maximum number of topics and to clarify most of your doubts, be there well in time! Date, Time and Venue: Date: Saturday, September 28, 2013. Time: 3 pm to 6 pm Venue: Yashwantrao Chavan Pratishthan basement hall, Jagannathrao Bosale Marg, Nariman Point, Mumbai 400021 - opposite Mantralay. The venue can be conveniently reached by bus root number 138 from CST station as well as 138/100 from Churchgate station. Share taxi services are also available from both these railway stations. Re: [AI] Going Back to Windows XP.
Hello Pranav, I am using Dell Vostro 1015 with 2.1 ghz processor and 2 gb RAM. I use Jaws 14 and eset nod32 antifirus. I was also using windows 7 for last three years and enjoyed its speed and some interesting features. But the most disturbing thing was, at least in my case, when I had to force shut down, jaws stopped first. So there was no way to know if any other programme was running. Anyway, I have reinstalled indows xp sp3 this morning. The OS only and jaws and the graphics driver. i am thinking of continuing with it for some time. Can you suggest which junks are running by a Dell machine? How can I find and stop them? Hi Amiyo, 1. What are the specifications of the laptop? 2. Down grading to Windows XP is not a good option since it is no longer supported by Microsoft. 3. What screen reader are you using? 4. What anti-malware applications are you using? Many laptops have a lot of junk running on them by default which has to be uninstalled or at least stopped from starting up at boot time. A chkdsk will usually not help in an increase in speed. Re: [AI] Matrimonial law is heavily stacked against persons with disabilities
In society like ours where right to choose and choice of a spous is considered abbaration; and such attempts are met with so called 'honour killings'. Then decision for divorce be construed on individual volition is not prudent. If X's licentiousness becomes the norm, and Y is left to fend for herself and children then judiciary has responsibility to ensure justice in favour of Y by considering social ramifications of divorce. it is not hidden fact that With growing years, biological genitals start looking for sunset and their endowed prouse remains memories.. And it is the irony of nature, that we have people like ND Tewari who claims zenith in 80s, but this is not true with MRS Tewari... On 9/23/13, Asudani, Rajesh rajeshasud...@rbi.org.in wrote: Well, not going into mental disability as a ground of divorce or not, I would like to emphasize the fact that marriage and its continuance are pure matters of individual volition. So its not that people have temporarily-abled bodies, (TAB) but temporarily-abled mind (TAM) as well. Read on. By Amba Salelkar The indian Express: Mon Sep 23 2013, 02:21 hrs http://www.indianexpress.com/news/an-unsound-framework/1172844/0 Mental health activists were pleased with the Supreme Court's recent observation that the mere fact of a spouse having schizophrenia was not enough ground for divorce under section 13 of the Hindu Marriage Act. The act allows for divorce if a spouse has been incurably of unsound mind, or has been suffering continuously or intermittently from mental disorder of such a kind and to such an extent that the petitioner cannot reasonably be expected to live with the respondent. The provision itself is controversial, because it includes both diagnosed and undiagnosed conditions, which effectively makes a judge the sole authority on whether a person is of unsound mind or not. Celebrations were more subdued after a closer examination of the judgment. The judgment laid undue stress on patronising the institution of marriage, although that is not the focus of this article. It also showed that the Supreme Court has done nothing but uphold an earlier position, laid down in 1988 in a remarkably well-thought-out ruling by Justice Venkatachaliah in Ram Narain Gupta vs Rameshwari Gupta. The ruling took into account literature on psychiatry and jurisprudence to reach its conclusions. One particular section stands out: Undoubtedly, mental illness is so disvalued because it strikes at the very roots of our personhood. This is captured in part by the language we use in describing the mentally ill. One is a hysteric, is a neurotic, is an obsessive, is a schizophrenic, is a manic- depressive. On the other hand, one has heart disease, has cancer, has the flu, has malaria, has smallpox. The grounds for divorce are heavily stacked against persons with disabilities. Besides unsoundness of mind, leprosy, which results in disability, still remains a ground - despite being completely curable. Till 1976, epilepsy was also included in this list. The only other health concern that the law recognises is venereal disease, which strikes at the very heart of conjugal bliss and may accompany ground one: adultery. The legislature, however, did not intend to make unsoundness of mind an easy escape route. As Venkatachaliah points out, If the mere existence of any degree of mental abnormality could justify dissolution of a marriage, few marriages would, indeed, survive in law. The qualification that the petitioner could not reasonably be expected to live with the respondent was in the statute books. Then why did the Supreme Court have to reiterate its own position, in a case with identical facts? It does seem to repeat itself quite often, of course, but this instance is significant. Just two years ago, the principal judge of the family court at Chennai stated that 40 per cent of divorce cases before the Chennai court involved allegations of unsoundness of mind. The experiences of persons with disabilities show that labels, bad enough in themselves, come with a whole set of repercussions. For example, the Reserve Bank of India specifies that persons covered under the National Trust Act, that is, those with cerebral palsy, mental retardation, autism or multiple disabilities, require a guardian,

[AI] Blind rage for protest space still on
The protesters’ only demand is a public place where they can stage an indefinite fast | Martin Louis By J Santhosh - CHENNAI Published: 24th September 2013 07:50 AM http://newindianexpress.com/cities/chennai/Blind-rage-for-protest-space-still-on/2013/09/24/article1799701.ece A group of visually challenged persons in the city are proving that physical disabilities are no barrier when it comes to putting up a fight for their rights. For the eighth consecutive day, more than 300 members of the College Students and Graduates Association for the Blind (CSGAB) courted arrest by staging a road roko in the city. Their only demand – a public place where they can stage an indefinite fast over their demands. So far the police have resorted to several “intimidating tactics” to disperse them, including leaving them in far off places without telling them where they were – once at Kovalam Beach and once at Madurantakam. “They told us we were at the Marina beach,” said Velmurugan, general secretary of the organisation. “We only wanted a secure place where nine of our members can stage their indefinite fast. We do not wish to stage the road roko and create trouble for public. But we are forced to do it as the police are denying us even the basic right to protest,” said R Raja, one of the protesters. Four meetings with Social Welfare Minister B Valarmathi proved futile as the protesters say that the officials were only keen on stopping the protests rather than lending an earnest ear to their demands. “We started our protest in front Government Guest House at Chepauk without causing any trouble for the public. But the police forcefully removed us from the spot forcing us to stage a road roko,” said N Murthy, one of the protestors. On Monday, representatives of the visually challenged persons held a meeting with Valarmathi. “The minister gave us mere oral promises. As she refused to give it as a form of statement to press, we have decided to continue our protest,” said a representative of CSGAB. All the protesters are postgraduates and doctorate-holders who say that they still have to do menial jobs to earn a livelihood despite their educational qualifications. Their main demand is recruitment of visually challenged persons to teaching jobs and relaxation of the eligibility criteria for teaching recruitment in government and government-aided institutions. -- Avinash Shahi M.Phil Research Scholar Centre for The Study of Law and Governance Jawaharlal Nehru University New Delhi India Register at the dedicated AccessIndia list for discussing accessibility of mobile phones / Tabs on: http://mail.accessindia.org.in/mailman/listinfo/mobile.accessindia_accessindia.org.in Search for old postings at: http://www.mail-archive.com/accessindia@accessindia.org.in/ To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. Re: [AI] Blind rage for protest space still on
i really hope they at least get enough media coverage soon. otherwise finding an exit from the fast is the most difficult thing. fasting is a good strategy but its gonna cost them a great deal especially if the police r already being so nasty. this is a big picture protest. not some immediate small-time demands. such situations aren't gonna be resolved any time soon. can any organizations on the list help or do anything in this matter?? advocates etc, would any1 at all be in a position to represent these guys at any level?? i urge any such organizations to please come together and perhaps innitiate some formal or legal pettition or something that might help hasten the responses of concerned authority. thank u. The police action has been steadily going worse day by day. The state Government seems to have decided to curb the protest with vilent mechanisms. It was decided by the those support the protesters that an email should be sent from each one's individual mail id to the Tamilnadu CM's cell. if I request all to join in this effort and send an email asking for the immediate intervention of CM. the mail id is: cmc...@tn.gov.in The model text of the mail sent to me is: Respected Sir/ Madam, On Behalf of the CSGAB( College Students Graduates Association of the Blind) , I would like to bring the below mentioned issue to your kind attention. I guess you are aware of the ongoing issues regarding the employment and the demands requested by the Visually challenged students of TN. I request you to look into this issue and it would be great if our honourable Chief Minister Madam tries to find a good solution as soon as possible. Thanks Regards, there are 9 persons on indefinite hunger strike, and 3 of them have fallen seriously ill. at least 2 of them have been admitted in the Intensive Care Unit. The police have been ordered to arrest if they see blind persons in groups. An undeclared curfew has been imposed only upon the blind persons in Chennai city. I sincerely request all our community to render their support in every possible means. thank you... -- Avinash Shahi M.Phil Research Scholar Centre for The Study of Law and Governance Jawaharlal Nehru University New Delhi India Register at the dedicated AccessIndia list for discussing accessibility of mobile phones / Tabs on: http://mail.accessindia.org.in/mailman/listinfo/mobile.accessindia_accessindia.org.in Search for old postings

[AI] please re mail again!
Hello friends, before few days one of our friend has share a very nice tricks which helps us to get rid from such an unknowing message coming from jaws on win7 which is mirror display problem. Due to internet balance problem I have missed such a very important mail. So it is my humble request to all that if some one has the same e mail, or some one knows the solution, please mail me on my e mail id which is bidh...@gmail.com. Though I am not facing such problem till now, but from the beginning till now jaws is not behaving properly on my laptop. When I press insert+f11 to bring up system tray list, jaws says no selected items. No selected items. No selected item. While pressing up/down arrow. Some time, even simple dialogue box is not reading by jaws, but the same dialogue box will read by NVDA very well. And so on. I believe if I apply the same tricks which has post before few days, my problem will solve. Thanks in advance. With care and regard, Raju singh. forwording the same solution mail. -- Forwarded message -- From: Kailas Patel kailaspate...@gmail.com Date: Sat, 21 Sep 2013 20:19:43 +0530 Subject: Re: KB need help in mirror display driver problem To: keyboardus...@googlegroups.com Cc: black-operations black-operati...@googlegroups.com Hello everyone. Pasting below the solution given by Freedom Scientific Technical support team for mirror driver error in Windows 7 64 bit. Thank you for contacting Freedom Scientific Technical Support. Following is the information I told you about during our conversation today. JAWS 14.0 mirror driver requires that the file ?WDF01000.sys? be version 1.11.xxx. This file is located in c:\Windows\System32\Drivers. You can find the version by right-clicking on this file. Choose Properties and then click on the Details tab. For product version, as an example, mine says File version 1.11.9200.16384. In order to update this, please click on the following link that will take you to Microsoft?s Support article on how to download and apply the update. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2685811 After the WDF file has been updated to the current version, The Freedom Scientific mirror driver, from JAWS 13, will need to be uninstalled. From the Start Menu, in the Search field, type device manager and then press Enter. Tab to the Treeview and press the letter D until you get to Display Adapters. Expand this and locate the Freedom scientific mirror driver. You may find more than one. If so, remove all of them until the only item remaining is your video driver. Once the Freedom Scientific mirror driver has been removed (select uninstall from the application context menu, or the Actions menu), you will need to run a /type repair on JAWS 14. To run this type of repair, please do the following: Download and save JAWS 14.0.4004. In your case, you already have the file, so you can skip this step, of course. http://www.freedomscientific.com/downloads/jaws/jaws-downloads.asp Next, navigate to where you saved the file; and, press Shift+Application Key on the j14.0.4004 file and choose ?Copy As Path? Then, open the Run dialog with Windows key+R. Paste the file in and at the end of the line, put a space and then /type repair. Your line should look like the following: C:\Users\xxx\Downloads\J14.0.4004-64bit.exe /type repair Press Enter. Restart the computer when prompted at the end of the repair maintenance. You should no longer receive the Freedom Scientific mirror Driver message. * end of Tech Support message that's it! I've deleted the rest of the message concerning my other issue.
