[AI] Budget's Braille vision from Modi book?

2014-07-14 Thread Avichal Bhatnagar
Budget's Braille vision from Modi book?

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/ahmedabad/Budgets-Braille-vision-from-Modi-book/articleshow/38223997.cms

AHMEDABAD: For blind people, Union Budget 2014-15 presented on
Thursday was historic - for the first time, the word 'Braille' was
given the importance of being mentioned in a central Budget. The role
of a teacher from Gujarat, Geeta Vaghela, who wrote the Braille
version of Narendra Modi's book on education, 'Kelve te Kelavanikar',
may be behind this sudden impetus given to Braille in the central
Budget. The Budget made the provision for 15 Braille presses and
Braille-embossed currency. Vaghela had gifted the Braille edition of
the book to Modi in 2007, when he was the chief minister.

Director of Blind People's Association, Bhushan Punani - an IIM
graduate who chose the social sector over the corporate sector - says
Vaghela's gift sparked Modi's interest in Braille, a tactile writing
system used by blind people.

I got a call from the CMO and it was communicated by CM Modi that
Vaghela's efforts should not go waste, says Punani. Vaghela teaches
in Guzariya Primary School in Mansa, Gandhinagar. Modi's interest in
Braille continued to be sustained and in 2012, his government in
Gujarat offered another gift to blind children of the state - 'Bal
Srushti' (The World of Children) - a monthly magazine for school
children. That too was released in Braille by Modi. The magazine is
read by 9,000 children enrolled in blind schools.

According to Census 2011, Gujarat has 3 lakh people with sight
problems of whom roughly 60,000 are children; 12,000 of them go to
school. India has 23 lakh people with visual impairments, 6 lakh of
whom are children. These are small numbers but allocations in the
Union budget for Braille presses and the Institute of Universal Design
for aids and devices along with currency, give a boost to the
integration of blind people in the mainstream, says Punani.

[AI] Article: Meet The Retired Mirzas, Who Make The Best Of HAM Radios

2014-07-14 Thread shahnaz

eet the retired Mirzas who make the best of HAM radios
In between noting down in Braille about those who have checked in,
72-year-old Perviz
Mirza excitedly demands that the walkie-talkie be handed over to her! Though she
and her 70-year-old brother, Vispi, take turns to go online on
alternate days, excitement
welled up when she heard familiar voices on Friday night. They were on
the net,
a ritual every active HAM follows every night.
It's the desire to hear people talk that made the two visually impaired siblings
become HAMs. Visible during calamities, and these days frequently on
city beaches
during Ganpati Visarjan,
HAMs are a group of people glued to each other for the thrill of
talking on radio
and wireless communication devices and their improvised versions.
Incidentally, the
Mirzas are among the most talkative HAMs around.
I first came to know of HAMs in 1968. Some of my visually impaired
colleagues were
already HAMs while I was studying in Boston College, said Vispi, who along with
his sister are 20-year-old HAMs.
Vispi, who used to teach visually-impaired kids, remembers the days
when his colleagues
in US asked him to become a HAM.
Becoming a HAM was not easy, however. As they were visually impaired
no one was willing
to teach the siblings.
I went to the Nehru Science Centre too, but they were not willing, said
Vispi
. However, in late
1990s
and early 2000 they met someone willing to teach them.
The most difficult part was teaching them the circuit diagrams. A
larger picture
on butter paper had to be made with another paper below it in order to make them
feel and understand it, said
Sudhir
Shah, their teacher.
Now they make it a point to be online from their shack as and when
they can. We
log in at least once every day. Sometimes it's three times, said
Perviz
, who used to work in Union Bank. For talking to the young, smart and
intelligent
about the weather, clarity of voice and the devices in use are important.
For
HAMs
, conversations are mostly about technology. That is what the
Mirzas
enjoy the most too. Best of their conversations have been with
friends like Cyril
Alphonso
, a
Mazgaon
resident.
Presently, I am working on a transceiver. We like to talk about
improvisation we
make on the handsets, said
Alphonso
, 78-year-old former radio officer in Navy.
For
Mirzas
there have been some interactions that they still cherish. One such
was with Commander
Harkirat
Singh who was in INS
Vikrant
. Another was with
Ashish
Saxena
, a senior Navy personnel in Western Command. They came across these
two when they
tuned in on HAM.
In fact,
Saxena
comes to visit us whenever he is here. The first time we met, he did
not not understand
that we were visually impaired, said
Vispi
, who did most of the talking about the friends made on HAM.
The
Mirzas
don't talk about politics. For them HAM is a hobby and they enjoy
exchanging recipes
and hobbies on air. I talk to my sister in
Valsad
who too is a HAM. We exchange recipes, and I experiment, said
Perviz
.
HAM which is described as the king of hobbies and not the hobby of
kings has many
commoners and dignitaries as members. The essence of this licensed
hobby is to provide
voluntary help in times of emergencies when alternate means of
communication is not
around.
The
Mirzas
, unlike most active
HAMs
, cannot be physically present at disaster sites, but they make sure their hobby
serves some useful purposes at times. Once it so happened that one HAM, Dr
Shenoy
, a friend of ours, had to go out into a forest area where there was
no mobile network.
He left our home number with the hospital for contacting him in case
of any emergency.
He would tune in every hour and we would inform him if the hospital had left any
message with us, said
Vispi
.
What is HAM radio?
HAM radios are wireless communication devices used as alternate means
of communication,
especially during emergencies or calamities. HAM requires
licence
and each HAM has his own identity which is coded with emphasis on phonetics.
HAMs
primarily work on Morse Code. It's said to be an acronym of Hertz,
Armstrong and
Marconi
, the scientists who are said to have developed the handset. Some however say it
means 'Help All Mankind'.
Popular
HAMs
Rajiv Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi,
Amitabh
Bachchan
, King
Hussain
of Jordan, a couple of
UAE
princes, Sultan
Qaboos
of Oman among others.
How to become a HAM?
One has to know English well. S/he has to appear for an exam. Before
licence
is granted, investigative agencies will conduct a background check. Aspiring
HAMs
are also given training.
Price of HAM radios
A HAM radio can cost from
Rs
8,000 to
Rs
75,000 depending on its reach. Some
HAMs
cover as much as half the world.

[AI] International and National Queries for SmartCane

2014-07-14 Thread smartcane project
Dear All,

We request everybody to send future national and international queries for
SmartCane to smartc...@saksham.org and/or call Saksham’s helpline number:
+91-11-64650655.

We thank you for your interest in SmartCane. At present this device is
available for sale only in India through Saksham, New Delhi and our 18
channel partners across the country.

A SmartCane user can reap its full benefit by participating in the training
session provided during the device handover. Within India, we have
partnered with organizations to be able to provide training at various
regions. In each partner institutes there are trainers who orient the user
with this device. For information on our Channel Partners, kindly visit:
http://smartcane.saksham.org/availability/

SmartCane comes as an attachment to a white cane.Currently the canes
provided with the device are standard, popular white canes used by visually
impaired in India. We are now working with International cane manufacturers
to create canes suitable for the international market. The initial results
have been very positive however the entire testing process would require a
few more months. Once this is satisfactorily tested we may have versions of
the product for international markets. Please be aware there would be a
significant difference in price as these canes are considerably more
expensive than the canes with which the product is currently supplied with.

In the meantime, if you are aware of any welfare organizations, serving the
visually impaired, in your local area and that would be interested in
becoming our channel partner, we would be happy to talk to them. Their role
is to interface with the user community including providing training to the
users through already trained trainers.

Please email us your queries and suggestions on the email provided above. We
will be informing all individuals and organizations about the progress made
and once SmartCane is ready for international dissemination.

It is our aim to reach out to organizations and individuals in the visually
impaired community. We actively seek partnerships to disseminate this
device and spread our reach not just in the nation but globally as well.

SmartCane

May I ask about your son a little more? Is he studying at ordinary school or s

[AI] New books on Bookshare

2014-07-14 Thread Kristina Pappas
Greetings,

Thank you for supporting Bookshare and for asking good questions about how to
get ths most out of it. Bookshare is trying to find a good way to highlight new
books of interest for Indian readers. We are adding so many books so quickly
that sending messages about all new books would fill up your inboxes.

For example, at the time of the AI convention in February, there were just over
1 lakh books available to Bookshare members in India. In the last few months,
we signed agreements with Penguin and Wiley, among other publishers, and we now
have over 160,000 books available to Bookshare members in India!

Among Indian publishers, we have signed agreements this year with Dreamtech,
Tulika, Navayana, and Cre-A, and we expect more to come soon.

As I mentioned, we're planning to highlight books of particular interest to
Indian readers on this list and elsewhere. In the meantime, the best way to
find new books coming into the collection is to browse for books that are newly
added:
https://www.bookshare.org/browse/latest

Best wishes,
Kristina

Dear Friends,
I am delighted to share that I have been promoted as Officer in JMG, SCALE-1.
I had appeared from both Fast Track and Seniority Channel, and cleared
both, however, as per my bank's rule, declared promoted in seniority
channel.
On this happy moment, I would like to briefly summarize my
approximately 5 years service in Allahabad Bank as SWO A.
I joined ALB in August 2009 and was posted in a branch of Siliguri
(W.B.). Within a month I was transferred to Kolkata Zonal office Metro
and was assigned the responsibility of Confidential Secretary to the
Zonal Head. Since then, I continued with this responsibility with some
additional tasks related TO PD, RECOVERY CREDIT-MONETORING.

From beginning of this month, I have been attached to Recovery Dep.
And possibly continue here only as my new assignment...

Finally, I sincerely thank AccessIndia and its members for
enlightening we people through sharing a pool of knowledge and vibrant

 Greetings,

Thank you for supporting Bookshare and for asking good questions about how to
get ths most out of it. Bookshare is trying to find a good way to highlight
new books of interest for Indian readers. We are adding so many books so
quickly that sending messages about all new books would fill up your inboxes.

For example, at the time of the AI convention in February, there were just
over 1 lakh books available to Bookshare members in India. In the last few
months, we signed agreements with Penguin and Wiley, among other publishers,
and we now have over 160,000 books available to Bookshare members in India!

Among Indian publishers, we have signed agreements this year with Dreamtech,
Tulika, Navayana, and Cre-A, and we expect more to come soon.

As I mentioned, we're planning to highlight books of particular interest to
Indian readers on this list and elsewhere. In the meantime, the best way to
find new books coming into the collection is to browse for books that are
 newly added:

Dear all,
It will be of great help if you can provide information about mobi and
epub converting software.
Of course there is a web site where one can go and get it converted
into text formats.
But, my need is to get an accessible converter which can convert the
above mentioned formats into text offline.

Thanks in advance,

I figured a work around to this by installing whatsapp on my PC.
 To
do this you will need to install an Android emulator, called
Bluestacks on your PC, and then install Whatsapp like any other
Android App from the Google playstore. You will need sighted
assistance the first time around until you get Talk Back up and
running. Post that my experience with WhatsApp access has increased
many fold. You can follow the link below for a step by step

contains a number of interviews with successfully employed individuals who
are visually impaired. The majority of these videotaped workers are Canadian
as the Project Aspiro website was developed in collaboration with the
Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB). We would like to expand
our offerings in this section to reflect the diversity of WBU's membership
and the variety of jobs being performed by workers who are blind or have low
vision throughout the world.
You are invited to contribute stories of successfully employed individuals
who are representative of your constituents. We welcome interviews with
individuals who are self-employed as well as those working for others. Your
submissions may be either audio or video files. The preferred format for an
audio file submission is an mp3 file. Videos files may be submitted in any
of the following formats: .MOV, .MPEG4, .AVI, .WMV, .MPEGPS, .FLV, .3GPP, or
.WebM.
Interviews should be 3-5 minutes long and follow the questions listed below
for consistency on the website.

Suggested Audio or Video Interview Questions for
Project Aspiro Website

Employment questions for individuals (self-employed or employed by others):
1. Please state in one sentence: what is your name and job title?*
2. Please describe your current employment. (Probes follow.)
a. How long have you been employed in this job?
b. What do you like best about this job?
3. Did you have assistance to secure this job?
a. If so, who helped you secure the job?
b. What technical aids or assistance have you received?
c. What financial assistance, if any, have you received?
4. How long did it take you to secure your current job?
5. At what age did you begin to work (for pay or as a volunteer)?
6. Did you have assistance to secure your first job? If so, who helped
you?
7. How long did it take you to secure your first job?
8. What other jobs have you had?
9. Please describe your educational background or vocational training.
10. Please describe what you can see, if you have usable vision.
11. What have been the biggest obstacles or challenges you encountered
finding or advancing in your career?
a. How have you overcome these obstacles?
b. Describe a time, if applicable, that you demonstrated to an
employer/potential employer/customer that you were able to perform a
job/task that they did not know/understand you were able to perform.
12. How has being employed impacted your life?
13. What or who has been the greatest positive influence in you being
successfully employed?
14. What do you bring to the job (tools, attitude.) that enables you to
be successful on the job?
15. What advice would you give to an employer or business owner who is
considering hiring someone with vision loss?
16. What advice would you give to another individual with vision loss
who is considering employment in your career field?
*Please ask this question again at the end of the interview to try and get
extra enthusiasm for use in a collage (a snippet of video with just names,
countries and occupations).
For example, Please enthusiastically state your name, country and job
title.
My name is Adam, I am from India, and I am a primary teacher for blind
students.

Note: If you are unable to record video with interviewees, please ask for a
digital photograph or take a photo for us. Thank you. If you have any
questions about this project or need further clarification, please email Dr.
Karen Wolffe (karenwol...@gmail.com). Thank you for your interest and
support of Project Aspiro.

Among the sound editor software, ColEDit is the best.
However just for volume escalation, you can use any one.

Hi Srinivasu,

Bookshare has books in Tamil as well as in Hindi, (as working tts available
only for these two Indian languages at present) though the number is quite
less, about 250-300 in each, but the collection in English is huge, about
160,000. Bookshare is trying to add more books in these Indian languages
based on the members request and with tie-ups with publishers. Once the tts
is available for other Indian languages, they will try to add books in those
languages also.

 Greetings,

Thank you for supporting Bookshare and for asking good questions about
 how
to get ths most out of it. Bookshare is trying to find a good way to
highlight new books of interest for Indian readers. We are adding so many
books so quickly that sending messages about all new books would fill up
 your inboxes.

For example, at the time of the AI convention in February, there were
 just
over 1 lakh books available to Bookshare members in India. In the last
 few
months, we signed agreements with Penguin and Wiley, among other
 publishers,
and we now have over 160,000 books available to Bookshare members in
 India!

Among Indian publishers, we have signed agreements this year with
Dreamtech, Tulika, Navayana, and Cre-A, and we expect more to come soon.

As I mentioned, we're planning to highlight books of particular interest
to Indian readers on this list and elsewhere. In the meantime, the best
 way
to find new books coming into the collection is to browse for books that
 are
 newly added:

 Best wishes,
 Kristina
