2015-04-03 Thread avinash shahi
Currently, 5.04 lakh teacher vacancies persist in India's 14 lakh
elementary schools mainly due to unavailability of trained teachers.
This year, 4,70,032 candidates took the CBSE National TET Exam for
qualifying to teach Classes VI to VIII. Only 43,034 qualified. General
section candidates had a pass percentage of 13.8 in this paper; SCs
had 3.88; STs had 4.86 and OBCs had 8.23. Average pass percentage was
just 9.16. Read more:

[AI] Washington Post: Facebook's Empathy Lab: How Facebook designs for disabled users By Hayley Tsukayama

2015-04-03 Thread avinash shahi
 31 March 2015:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-switch/wp/2015/03/31/facebooks-empathy-lab-how-facebook-designs-for-disabled-users/
A smartphone user shows the Facebook application on his phone in the
central Bosnian town of Zenica, in this photo illustration, May 2,
2013. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic

Facebook is releasing the principles it uses to make sure the social
network accessible to all users -- regardless of physical ability. The
accessibility toolkit, which the company will make public Tuesday,
includes everything from how Facebook ensures that its engineers think
about those issues to its strategies for building accessibility
features into the site.

Different companies handle features for blind, deaf or otherwise
disabled users in different ways. At Facebook, there's a whole team
devoted to this idea: the Empathy Lab.

The name may sound a little squishy -- or disingenuous, depending on
your level of cynicism. But it's a name that's been carefully chosen,
said Ramya Sethuraman, an accessibility engineer who runs the lab.

Accessibility tends to be a hard process for people [to understand],
said Sethuraman. Calling it the Empathy Lab is better because
everyone understands that concept.

Understanding and awareness, after all, are two of the biggest
roadblocks to getting product engineers to think about issues of
accessibility. Often, making the Web accessible comes as an
afterthought -- not because companies are actively trying to keep
anyone from using their products, but because they simply don't think
about the issue until they receive feedback from users.

Facebook's Jeffrey Wieland, the manager of the accessibility
engineering team, said that his goal is to help all the company's
engineers think about the needs of disabled Facebook users from the
start. The company works to build core components that were designed
with accessibility in mind as the basic building blocks for every
thing on the mobile and desktop site.

That ensures that these issues get addressed from the start, even at
tech companies such as Facebook that famously want to move, test and
tweak their products quickly.

It's quite important for the strategy, Wieland said, of baking
accessibility into the site from the start.

At the lab, engineers work on the site using, for example, a computer
that doesn't have a mouse, to simulate the experience of a person who
only has enough mobility to use a keyboard. (Pro-tip: Hitting J and
K will let you scroll to the next or previous items on your News
Feed.)

They also work on machines with screen readers, which are used by
blind or visually impaired Web users to navigate pages, as well as
with mobile devices with features such as Apple's VoiceOver or Android
accessibility features enabled to make sure that everything on the
network can be used by everyone.

And accessibility doesn't only mean dealing with physical disabilities
-- it also means addressing technological ones. Sethuraman said that
the Empathy Lab also looks at how to design Facebook for different
parts of the world, where screens may be smaller and the Internet
connections a little slower.

The company also works with several of its competitors and tech peers
such as LinkedIn, Yahoo and eBay to talk over how they all work to
make their sites easier to use. Every May on Global Accessibility
Awareness Day, representatives from these and other companies meet for
a sort of lightning TED-style talks to share their success and
failures in tackling these issues.

Our goal is to connect everyone in the world, and there ARE huge
differences in the way that people interact with Facebook, Wieland
said. We want to build products that really work for everyone and can
be used by everyone.

[AI] Born to shine on celluloid

2015-04-03 Thread avinash shahi
Talking about Margherita With A Straw, she says, It is Laila's (Kalki
Koechlin) coming of age story and there are two women who play a
substantial role in inspiring her to become the person she eventually
becomes. One is her mother and the other is the character I play.
Laila meets me when she comes to study in New York, at a protest
rally. I'm among the people firing slogans, and am blind. It's the
first time she meets someone who is also differently-abled, but is a
person of her own and has a lot of mettle and fire within her. She is
completely awe-struck by me and goes through a journey with me to
understand how to celebrate herself. My character has a lot of passion
and at no point in the film do you see her regretting that she can't
see. She just goes out there and lives her life. The movie as a whole,
I feel, shows you a great representation of women, also because it is
made by Shonali who is a very independent woman herself.

Subject: [AI] May be of interest: 9 in10 flunk CBSE's test for elementary
teachers

Currently, 5.04 lakh teacher vacancies persist in India's 14 lakh elementary
schools mainly due to unavailability of trained teachers.
This year, 4,70,032 candidates took the CBSE National TET Exam for
qualifying to teach Classes VI to VIII. Only 43,034 qualified. General
section candidates had a pass percentage of 13.8 in this paper; SCs had
3.88; STs had 4.86 and OBCs had 8.23. Average pass percentage was just 9.16.

Hi,
Your question isn't clear enough.
Still, based on my understanding, you ask for a the method to read
Hindi text with JAWS.
Actually, you should ask for a speech synthesizer, that supports JAWS,
that can read Hindi.
Anyways, below are the two options:
ESpeak - espeak.sourceforge.net/
Vocalizer (Lekha) - http://www.freedomscientific.com/Vocalizer/VocalizerDirect
Thanks.

Re: [AI] Help needed for a friend

2015-04-03 Thread Him Prasad Gautam
hi,
There are plenty of Devanagari typing tools for windows.

Each tool has its own characteristics and limitations.
Basically, the typing tools can be categorized into 3 types.
1. Phonetics.
2. Traditional (typewriter based).
3. Transliterate.

after studying about a dozen of available Devanagari typing tools by myself,
I have developed the Hindi Varnamala specially suitable to screen reader user.
It is free and your friend can use it.
However, among of the available Hindi Typing tools, you can find some
of them in your own windows.
There you can find traditional Hindi and Devanagari inscript or
Marathi or Kankani etc.
No need to download from any where. It is already installed in your
freind's computer.
Besides, you can download saraswati godrej and Saraswati phonetics too.
My varnamala is purely made focusing the issues of screen reader users.
try it from:

contact if any issue encountered.

Kindle supports all document files - Doc, pdf, Mobi, TXT, EPub etc.
So any book on your PC, can be transferred to Kindle.
No need to purchase Kindle books. Of course, they are a bit costlier.
Many sighted students are using Kindle these days and reading ncert books,
sample papers etc on Kindle.
But the version which most of these students use, does not have any speech
support.
Recently, I bought Kindle white in around ten thousand rupees for my
daughter.
It has internet WI FI support, Online dictionary, a bit of editing
options,

book marks etc. but there is no speech support.

If you buy one of the Kindle Fire tablets, it comes with a built-in screen
reader. it is a very good screen reader too. Alternatively, if you have an
iPhone/iPad or an Android device, you can download the Kindle app and get
access to the same books on your preferred device using either VoiceOver

[AI] Want to know about the tapin radio

2015-04-03 Thread Mohib Anwar Rafay
I downloaded and installed tapin radio in windows 7 laptop. As this
application is quite famous and seems to be accessible with jaws. But
I am hardly getting any clue of it, can anyone provide some initial
tips how to put my hands on the feathers of this bird?
Basically I am looking to listen BBC world news, Aljazira english,
ABC news and some other popular channels.
