Hi all,

Has anyone had any experience with taking courses in first aid? I was looking at

Note:
No data there and a significant portion of the navigation bar appears to be
inaccessible.

I need the course to be hands on. There is a lot of information about first aid
on the Internet so I can get the theory without any problems.

[AI] Sharing for your knowledge: Why C is the default hard drive letter in many computers?

2015-04-06 Thread Hozefa Tambawala
Why C is the Default Hard Drive Designation on Many PCs?

For nearly as long as hard disk drives have been placed in personal
computers running certain popular operating systems (notably
MS-DOS/Windows), the primary hard disk has been designated with the
letter “C”. But why?

The idea for designating different storage devices with simple
letters is generally attributed to IBM’s virtual machine operating
systems developed in the 1960s, starting with their CP-40 and CP/CMS
systems, and later very notably, among others, copied by the CP/M
operating system created by the company Digital Research, Inc. In the
early systems (CP/CMS) the letters were used mostly to designated
logical drives, although later (such as with CP/M), they were used to
specify physical storage devices.

This all brings us to 1980 when IBM attempted to use the relatively
popular CP/M operating system on the IBM Personal Computer. Talks
broke down between IBM and Digital Research, Inc, for reasons not
totally clear today. The trouble is rumored to have started when
Dorothy Kildall, the wife of CP/M creator Gary Kildall, refused to
sign a non-disclosure agreement with IBM at the start of the
negotiations. She supposedly told them she would not sign such a
document without speaking with her husband first, who was out of town
on business. This was a somewhat unusual move as Gary often left such
business negotiations to her anyway.

This refusal to sign the non-disclosure agreement, which purportedly
greatly annoyed the IBM representatives, was all supposedly at the
advice of Gerry Davis, Digital Research’s attorney. But given this
sort of thing is standard practice for many business negotiations, the
whole thing seems decidedly odd looking back, with those involved not
helping with their conflicting accounts.

What happened after isn’t any clearer. Gary Kildall later claimed,
upon returning from his little business trip, he and his wife reached
a handshake agreement with IBM’s representative, Jack Sams, while
aboard a flight to a vacation the couple were taking. He claimed IBM
didn’t honor that agreement. Sams said that none of that ever
happened.

Whatever the case, what we do know for sure is that IBM moved on from
the then relatively popular CP/M to instead dealing with Microsoft,
who in turn purchased a license to a CP/M clone called 86-DOS. They
then adapted 86-DOS for IBM’s new PC, with a few significant changes
thrown in, and branded it MS-DOS, though called PC DOS by IBM.

Being based on a CP/M clone, among other things, MS-DOS borrowed the
disk drive lettering schema from CP/M, which had borrowed it from the
aforementioned previous IBM systems. By copying many elements of the
CP/M system, it allowed popular software packages that could run on
CP/M to be relatively easily ported over to MS-DOS and used on the new
IBM PC.

This all brings us back to the specific drive lettering schema. Early
PCs didn’t usually come with internal mass-storage devices due to the
expense (though HDDs had been around since the 1950s). Instead, they
generally had some form of a “floppy” disk reader, such as those used
to read 5 1/4″ floppy disks, initially labeled as “A” in MS-DOS and
certain other operating systems. Some systems came with two such
floppy disk drives necessitating the need for a “B”. When the 3.5″
floppy disk (which wasn’t actually floppy at all unless you took it
apart to get at its innards) was commonly added, using both “A” and
“B” for floppy drives was firmly entrenched.

When hard disk drives became standard in most PCs in the later 1980s,
since the first two letters were already commonly used for these
floppy drives, they logically labeled the third storage device “C”,
even though it now tended to be the main storage medium for the
computer, including usually containing the operating system.

Despite that exceptionally few systems today still contain floppy
disk drives, this schema of drive designation has stuck around anyway,
with “A” and “B” often still by default reserved for floppy drives. Of
course, these letters aren’t set in stone on modern systems and you
can easily change, remove or add drive letters (representing both
physical and logical drives) if you have administrative rights.

Install the software Bluestacks. Now in Bluestacks create account in

install Speech synthesizer data. To install all these you need
sighted assistance. After that, you can install Whatsapp and enjoy.

With warm regards

[AI] Fwd: FW: INCOMPLETE committee for guidelines on written exams for people with disabilities

2015-04-06 Thread Vaishnavi Jayakumar
Hi all,

MSJE has set up a committee for guidelines on written exams for people with
disabilities based on issues UPSC is facing with current guidelines. The
notice is here http://socialjustice.nic.in/pdf/om-CEC-WEforPwD.pdf

Members of organizations of people with following disabilities alone are to
be part of the committee : visual, hearing and locomotor disabilities,
according to the notice. The committee has two months time to file a report
after reaching consensus.

Current guidelines of 2013
http://www.ccdisabilities.nic.in/content/en/docs/omguide.pdf which are
supposed to be overarching have not been put into practice in central
boards itself, leave alone state boards or common entrance tests.

Given that people with speech, cognitive, ASD, SLD and psychosocial
disabilities continue to face hurdles and stress in this context year after
year, representatives of these disabilities must find place in the
committee.

Do write immediately to Mr. Awanish Awasthi of DEPwD, MSJE to facilitate
the same. His contact details are available here
http://socialjustice.nic.in/contactperson3.php

The text of the notice follows (the original is not screen-reader friendly).

The MSJE guideline is not yet implemented in the most of exam
conducting body while the government is interested to review it in
negative way which must be ragist at each level. there is strong need
to understand that there is something going in the mind of opponent
like J. Abadi who had spoke that only way to resolve contentious
issue by developing the multiple choice based questions and
replacing the human assistance with technology. here I would like to
say that, there is need to review the losses which occurred because
of bad writer as I felt in UP exam recently. now friends, we should
active and aware about this type of development. in this process, we
can have a written protest by our forum, raising their voice through
newspaper, making contact with several organisations, writing article
etc. please response this tread and make momentum against this
underline motive.

To,

Dear Sir/Madam
We are a special Government aided institution established in the year

The Diploma course in Computer Applications for the Visually Impaired

Hi, I am suffering with loss of center vision since my childhood.
Doctors says that this is a special type of RP which begins from center
 and
gradually moves towards the periphery. Recently from 12 inches I could
 see
only the first line. But I have been doing eye yoga since more then 16
 yrs
although not very regularly except the first 5 years, but still I
 strongly
believe I could protect my vision from total vision loss. Just 4 months
 back
I met with a not so very common eye condition called uvitis in my left
 eye.
I couldn't see anything with my left eye then. However with steroids
 there
was some improvement. Still lots of pigmentation occurs at times due to
which my vision goes down drastically. I came across a naturopathic
 doctor.
According to him any condition can be reversed with appropriate diet.
So he gave me some routine diets to have with regular foods such as lots
 of
sallads made of carrot and all. I am following prescription given by him
 and
within 4 weeks, I could even read the 4th line on the chart from 12
 inches.
The pigmentation in my left eye is gradually decreased in frequency and I
 am
feeling better. He assured me within 6 months you will be able to read
 all
the 7 lines of the chart from 36 inches which constitutes 3/6 vision. I
 am
positive on this and moving ahead. I will also take some new exercises
 with
him after monsoon, until then I will honestly

I could write with utmost conviction that government is unable to
digest the success attained by persons with disabilities in all walks
of lives. Instead of strengthening envigilation they are mulling to
bring back archaic rule for amanuensis which often rob disabled
examinees of their hardearned labour. There are many blind students I
know who thought of commiting suicide cause they studied for 10 to 12
hours for exams and could not score well because scribes provided by
the exam conducting body were unable to read the questionpaper and
asked spelings of each and every word. Would government own any
responsibility? Lets resolve to withstand such nefarious attempt by
the government to deny us right to appear in exams on an equal bases.
And those who think web-based exam will rid us from all ills, they are
requested to comment after realizing the fact that computer literacy
is yet to perculate in the rural hinterland where 70 per cent disabled
reside. JNU Visually challenged Forum will resist any such attempt to
the tooth and nail. And hope there will be nationwide movement to
protect the current exam guidelines which is comprehensive and ensure
us equal playing field. mr PK Pinchaw (Former CCPD) understood the
gravity of the problem and gave us the most appropriate guidelines
which should be protected from being tinkered.
http://www.telegraphindia.com/1150406/jsp/nation/story_12951.jsp

Our Special Correspondent
New Delhi, April 5: The Centre might be forced to review guidelines
issued two years ago allowing the disabled to choose scribes
(writers) for exams irrespective of the assistants' qualifications, if
the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has its way.

The UPSC, which conducts several key tests like those to the IAS, is
concerned that such unfettered choice allows teachers and experts to
become scribes, affecting the integrity of the exams.

Some state boards have also raised objections to the 2013 rule.

The pre-2013 guidelines allowed assistants whose qualifications were
below that of disabled examinees, eliminating the possibility of
cheating.

After the worries voiced by the UPSC and the others, the Centre has
now constituted a committee to review the 2013 norms and address the
problems in their implementation.

The guidelines, issued by the Union ministry of social justice and
empowerment, had given students with moderate to extreme disabilities
the right to choose their own scribes to write papers or a lab
assistant for practical tests.

The ministry had mandated that there would not be any educational
criteria for the scribe, making it possible for the disabled to choose
anyone they wished to assist them. The primary job of a scribe is to
read out the question paper and write down the answers.

S.K. Rungta, general secretary of the National Federation of the
Blind, felt any review would be counter-productive.

The problem with reviewing or changing the guidelines is that since
they are applicable to all exams, a person (with disability) appearing
for a Class X exam cannot be expected to get a Class VIII student to
be his scribe. One, the student (scribe) will probably have his own
exams around the time. Two, how can the disabled person risk his
career with a younger student? Rungta said.

The 2013 guideline said that instead of fixing the eligibility
criteria for such helpers, institutions should strengthen
invigilation system so that the candidates or scribes do not indulge
in malpractices of copying or cheating.

Activists agreed. Javed Abidi, the director of the National Centre for
Promotion of Employment for Disabled People, said the demand to review
the guidelines betrayed the government's habit of shirking
responsibility.

Although there is a probability of cheating, instead of denying the
disabled the right to scribe of their choice, the government should
ensure that there is strict invigilation. That is the responsibility
of the states and the institutes.

Abidi, however, believed that the only way to resolve the contentious
issue was to move towards the international trend of Web-based
multiple choice exams. There is software to aid the disabled through
which they can appear for these exams. They will not need any
assistance.

Worldwide, the use of scribes - also known as amanuenses - is
becoming limited with the advent of technology. However, some
countries allow them at the school level for note-taking and as
readers.

The general norm is that the scribe would be appointed by the
institute and should have an

Re: [AI] Victims of RP

2015-04-06 Thread pratik shah
hello everyone,
I am Pratik Shah from Anand, Gujarat. at present my age is 32years.
at the age of 10 only, I was diagnosed with rp. I have studied in
normal school and college only. at the time of my PG (M. Com ) exam
only I have realized that I was unable to read question paper
properly. and I have failed in that exam. then with help of writer I
have given exam in next year and cleared my PG. in the year 2006, I
have cleared NET exam with commerce subject. I was driving vehicles
till year 2008.
at present I amhaving very low vision. still working in self financed
commerce college as assistant professor. many times I feel very bed
when my faculty collegues are doing more work than me and still I am
receiving the same salary as what they are receiving. many times some
persons also pass bed comment about my unability to do some work in my
absence for which also I can do nothing.
right now I am doing ok with my teaching. I am using portable video
magnifier for reading and solving examples in class room.and screen
reading software to work on computer. but in future how will I manage
, is a question for me after I will become blind as I am teaching
accounting subject and not theory subject, so it will be very
difficult to teach accounting subject without having eye vision.
someone has mentioned about one naturotherapist , will you please
inform all of us about his name and address ? will be helpful to us
also in sustaining our sight ?
I have married to a normal vision girl in the year 2009. she has been
informed about my disease well in advance. she is also a lecturer in
food processing college.

Re: [AI] Victims of RP

2015-04-06 Thread Pinkesh Tailor
Hi the naturopathic Doctors name is Amarjeet. Basically this entire
concept has its roots in pondicherry. This doctor along with diet also
gives exercises to do under his supervision. While regular visit to
this doctor at mumbai, I met one lady (sorry forgot her name) who had
lost her complete vision just 5 years back due to RP. While talking to
her, I understood that she was coming to this center since August
2014. As she entered the center, she could see her name in the
attendance register and could sign independently. Earlier I couldn't
recognize that she was suffering from RP. She said that she could now
do all her banking related activities such as filling up the deposit
slip etc with the help of her reading glasses. This doctor is
currently migrated and residing in Ahmadabad and visit mumbai on
sunday's and monday's. If any one interested to talk to him can call
him directly on his mobile at 09408704433.

Thanks,

 hello everyone,
I am Pratik Shah from Anand, Gujarat. at present my age is 32years.
at the age of 10 only, I was diagnosed with rp.

 Hi,
I am Bhavya Shah, aged 13. I reside in Mumbai and study in a
mainstream school. I was diagnosed with a weak retina when I was
approximately 5 years old. Every time my retina detached, an operation
was performed to temporarily re-attach it, and my family was aware
that sooner or later I would be completely blind. After seven years of
slowly decreasing sight, I became fully blind at the age of 11.
Fortunately, I was directed to the appropriate training and
rehabilitation institutions and continued my mainstream schooling.
Now, Life is as it was before when I was fairly sighted. The only
skill I desire to have is independent mobility, but that's a long
 story in itself...
 Thanks.

 HI all
It was in may 2000 when I became 15 I was diagnosed RP. At that time I
had manageable vision but now I have very little vision left. It is
solely due to my family that I could face the vision loss phase of my
life with great strength. In between sometime I feel little restless
but I come out of it thinking of persons who are in worse conditions
 than me
