Hi Tejaswi,

If you want to get into private companies, its better to approach
organisations like Enable India at Bangloore who would have some
database of companies which are sensitive to disabled. They indeed
place some people depending on the academics and skillset. Otherwise
you can try for bank jobs which pay decent salaries. Of course, I'm
not discouraging you from trying in private sector. you may call me
to discuss further on this.

2016-09-30 Thread Vamshi. G

2016-09-30 Thread Eyeway Helpdesk
Dear All:

Greetings from theNational Eyeway Helpdesk

Please, follow below the Daily Eyeway Alerts:

1. News-

Inclusive education for spl students sought.

BHUBANESWAR: Differently-abled students from across the State
underlined the need for inclusive education in Government schools at
‘Prativa O Manthan’, a workshop organised by Swabhimaan here on
Thursday.

The students spoke about the need for ramps, accessible toilets and
special dining area for eating mid-day meals in Government schools.
They also suggested that of the six working days in Government
schools, at least one day should be earmarked for teachers and
students to only communicate in English. This will enhance their
oratory skills and the adaptation from school to college would be
easier. Visually-impaired and low vision children spoke about the
level of consent a teacher should provide in a class to them and they
should be made sit in the first row.

[AI] The Econnomist reports: Combining old and new ways of getting around will transform transport—and cities, too

2016-09-30 Thread avinash shahi
AMONG Helsinki’s contributions to innovation in transport is a tram
kitted out as a fully functioning pub, which trundles through its
centre in the summer. But Finland’s capital will soon host schemes
that appeal to more than beer-swilling sightseers. Residents will be
able to travel quickly door-to-door within the city by using an app
that mixes and matches a variety of public and private means of
transport. Several such schemes are due to start this year. If they
succeed they could do for personal mobility what Airbnb and Spotify
have done for accommodation and music: turn it into a service,
accessed and paid for on demand.
http://www.economist.com/news/international/21707952-combining-old-and-new-ways-getting-around-will-transform-transportand-cities-too-it
MaaS Global (short for Mobility as a Service) is the startup behind
the most ambitious of Finland’s schemes. At a tap of a smartphone
screen its app, Whim, will show the best way to get from A to B by
combining public transport and a variety of options from participating
private firms. Whim is currently being tested; it is due to go live in
Helsinki this autumn and in two other Finnish cities late in the year.
If there is no obvious route, a scheme like these might suggest a
bicycle from the city’s bike-share scheme (if one is close to your
front door), followed by a train and then a taxi; an on-demand bus
(“hail” it on the app and it will come and pick you up); or a one-way
car-share to a tram and a rented “e-bike” with a small electric motor
to alleviate the strain of pedalling for the final leg. Once a route
has been chosen it will make any bookings needed, as well as ensuring
that hire vehicles are available and public-transport sections are
running on time. Costs will be displayed for every option, making
clear the trade-offs between speed, comfort and price. Customers will
be able to buy one-off journeys or “bundles” modelled on mobile-phone
contracts, allowing a certain amount of travel each month.

Commuters around the world are already accustomed to making journeys
that combine public transport with walking, taxis or shared bikes. And
preparing to take a trip has been transformed since the days of
printed maps and timetables. Many countries have websites that give
information on how to reach a destination by bus or train, both within
cities and between them; in some places Google’s online maps have
transport information built in. Buying tickets online is now common;
Trainline, an online booking system for rail tickets, is rolling out
across Europe.

But planning a journey is one thing; making it another. After getting
advice on their routes travellers have always had to find their own
way to a bus stop or train station, or call a cab. Payment and booking
systems have generally been separate for each leg of a journey, and
the “last mile” between mass transit and final destination has not
been covered at all. Services such as Whim aim to change all this:
removing the guesswork, combining the various options in the most
efficient and cost-effective ways, and getting the traveller
seamlessly from door to door.

Without such new thinking, cities will grind towards gridlock. In 2007
half the world’s population lived in cities; by 2050 it is expected
that two-thirds will (see chart). According to Arthur D. Little, a
consultancy, urban journeys already account for nearly two-thirds of
all kilometres travelled by people. On current trends urban distance
travelled each year will havetrebled by 2050, and the average time
urban drivers spend languishing in traffic jams is set to double to
106 hours a year.

The traditional policy responses to congestion—build more roads and
expand public transport—are too expensive for these cash-strapped
times. Hence the appeal to urban planners of the idea of travellers
combining existing mass-transit schemes with a growing variety of
private services. It offers a way to attract private capital into
“public” transport. By enabling a closer link between supply and
demand it will make mass transport more efficient. Congestion at peak
hours will fall as travellers are diverted from crowded routes to
less-packed ones; varying prices by time of day could help here, too.

Public-health experts are also keen on the new approach. The apps
through which the various options are accessed could be tweaked to
encourage healthier choices, such as walking or cycling, if desired.
Emissions of pollutants should also fall, because fewer vehicles would
be idling in jams and there would be fewer cars on the street.
Helsinki thinks it can make its centre free of cars by 2025—not by
banning them, but by building a transport system that renders them
redundant.

As well as commuters’ lives, cities will be transformed, too. With
fewer cars and parking spaces needed, they can be redesigned to be
more pedestrian-friendly and to have more green spaces. Quicker
journeys will increase the catchment area for job-seekers prepared to
travel to

[AI] Kiki Siregar writes in the Asianage today: In Bali’s deaf village, silence is golden

2016-09-30 Thread avinash shahi
Deaf people perform a traditional dance in the village of Bengkala in
Bali. (Photo: AFP)
Balinese women dressed in gold bodices dance to rhythmic drumming
while waving fans as men in purple outfits sit cross legged around
them, jiggling their arms and chanting.
http://www.asianage.com/international/bali-s-deaf-village-silence-golden-147
It appears to be just another show on the Indonesian resort island,
known for its ancient culture and rituals, but there is a key
difference — the dancers are all deaf and cannot hear the beat.

They perform the moves, learnt over months of hard training, from memory.

The village of Bengkala has been home to an unusually large number of
deaf people for generations, and nowadays about 40 out of its
approximately 3,000 residents have severe hearing loss.

But unlike in other parts of Indonesia where they could face
mistreatment, local people have taken the deaf residents to their
hearts. In many ways, life in the small hamlet has come to revolve
around them.

As well as the dance project, a unique sign language called Kata Kolok
has been developed in the isolated village which has been mastered by
those with hearing impairment, as well as many of those who can hear,
prompting interest from scientists around the world.

In addition, deaf villagers are trained in skills such as making
handicrafts that can be sold in the heaving tourist resorts of the
island, and they work side by side with other villagers in the rice
fields.

“Human rights are the same everywhere. So I thought, why should the
deaf be ostracised?” said Ketut Kanta, who heads a community group for
the village’s deaf residents.

The approach is relatively unique in Indonesia, where the disabled
often suffer harsh discrimination.

Bengkala, in northern Bali, has existed for about eight centuries.

Residents often scrape a living tending to the surrounding rice fields
and education levels are generally low.

In the past villagers thought the high incidence of deafness was due
to a curse but those superstitions — and the prejudices they created —
have largely been abandoned after experts concluded it was due to a
recessive gene common among the local population.

It was not until the 1960s that the village began to make efforts to
better integrate its deaf residents and nowadays everyone is treated
equally, according to village head I Made Arpana.

“We don’t differentiate between deaf villagers and non-deaf
villagers,” he said, adding that the community did not want the hard
of hearing residents to feel “inferior”.

A key factor in creating this peaceful co-existence has been Kata
Kolok, which literally translates as “talk of the deaf”, and is used
to varying degrees by around 80 per cent of the villagers.

It is different to international and Indonesian sign language. It has
grown organically over the decades and has its own unique signs
created by villagers to reflect how they see the world.

Attempts to ensure harmony in the village start at a young age, with a
Bengkala elementary school teaching all children side by side.

The 77 students are all given lessons in the local sign language, and
are introduced to elements of Indonesian and international signing.

Made Budiasih, whose seven-year-old son goes to the school, said she
was worried for his future when they discovered he was deaf at birth,
but said the inclusive educational centre had made all the difference.

“I was despairing, but then I found out about this school,” she said.

Still, it is not always easy teaching deaf students as they often
become frustrated and act out, according to teacher I Made Wisnu, who
has been working at the school for a decade.

There are no junior high schools equipped to teach deaf students, so
most have to drop out of the system once they’ve graduated from
elementary classes.

Despite the challenges, village chief Arpana is determined to
safeguard the unique culture of the hamlet’s deaf community, saying he
would be a “sinner” if he did not.

The clearest expression of the village’s warm embrace of its hard of
hearing population is the unique project “dance of the deaf”, which
has started to draw a trickle of foreign visitors to the
out-of-the-way village, giving residents hope for a brighter future.

Tambourine player I Wayan Getar, speaking in sign language through an
interpreter, told AFP: “Tourists from China and Europe are coming to
watch us, and they really enjoy it.”
