RE: [AI] Why do people say these things to the blind? And what can be done for the same?

2024-05-07 Thread Yamuna Jivana Dasa
Hi,

People may be soft-heartedly feeling sympathetic seeing us as blind. No harm
intended. We simply accept their feeling of compassion, bless them from the
heart and move on. They could do with some punya even if that is true anyway.
Or at least they could do with some blessings from us for the help or facility
they might provide us, blind or not as we may be!

Just my thoughts.

Subject: [AI] Why do people say these things to the blind? And what can be done
for the same?

These are some of the experiences had by one of my students of which I don't
have an answer. Could you please help me.

1. Di, I am a visually impaired MBA student, pursuing MBA from an IIM. I was
with a senior at the grocery store of our campus, i waited as the senior got
ice cream for both of us. The shopkeeper said, "inko bolo kal aane k liye, kal
meri taraf se mai inko kuch dunga. Ice cream ya juice kuch dunga meri taraf
se." Which roughly translates to, "ask him to come tomorrow, I'll give him an
ice cream or juice from my side." So the question is why would the shopkeeper
have said the same? I am an MBA student, I was wearing clean clothes, I was
holding a forty thousand rupees phone in one hand and a white stick in the
other hand. I don't understand did he think I can't afford a Rs 50 ice cream? I
am paying the equal amount of fees but upon my survey he never said anything
like this to any of the sighted or non disabled students. Why was the ice cream
? For merely being blind?

2. Di, one of my batchmates said, "how is the preparation for the exams going?
Do one thing, come let me teach you, I'll get punya by teaching you." Why is
it? Why can't people with blindness just exist? What is this attachment of
punya if we help the blind we'll get punya? Are we humans or some divine
entity. If you don't get punya by helping or teaching a sighted or a non
disabled person then why punya from the blind?

Please suggest how I can help my student, as clearly, she is in a lot of stress
by these experiences.

Regards.

Cauvery She/her.

2024-05-07 Thread Shadab Husain
My name isn’t Sigmund Freud, but I think that for this student the opposite
of success isn’t sloth – it’s running after flies that are meant to be
fanned away.

The truism says, success requires sacrifices. Many times it’s not enough
for you to sacrifice your sleep, hunger, comfort etc., though we rarely
think beyond them.

The devil attacks where you’re least expecting him from.

I have had a string of rude experiences, some coming out from people who I
thought to be my dearest friends, and they have burned my heart to the
core. But if your priorities are defined, you have to move ahead, no matter
the pain.

Additionally, attaching your blindness with every ill treatment that you
face isn’t wise, because every single person on this earth suffers from it.

Whether people talk politely or rudely with me, I’m quick to conclude my
blindness to be its cause, but my prejudice gets scrubbed off when I see
them behaving with others also in the same way.

I could be more resourceful than some other blind, but I think that they’re
happier and more contented with their lives because they know what to
welcome and what to put out the window. I get this feeling when I mingle
with them. they may not talk philosophy or read voluminous books, but they
have the right approach for things.

I therefore feel that this student must seek opportunities to mix up with
other blind people. She could go to trips and conferences and see how
terribly funny and hard the blind are.

Your fingers touch a boiling bowl. Option A: keep them there and option B:
snatch them away.

Your heart touches a boiling emotion. Option A: force your heart to burn
and option B: move it away to put it in a meaningful pursuit.

An Urdu poet said, There’re far greater problems in this life to think
about than just being deceived in love!

People with disabilities to get quotas in all trains irrespective of fare
concessions

https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/differently-abled-passengers-to-get-quota-in-all-trains-irrespective-of-concession/article68142046.ece

The Ministry of Railways has approved quotas for people with disabilities
(PwDs) in all trains, irrespective of whether any concessional fare facility is
available or not.

According to railway sources, the PwD quota will be earmarked in all reserved
Express/Mail trains, including Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto, Humsafar, Gatimaan,
and Vande Bharat express trains.

According to the revised norms, the quota will be: four berths in Sleeper Class
(two lower and two middle), four berths in Three Tier AC, 3E or 3A, (two lower
and two middle), four berths in the Specially Designed Second Class Luggage cum
Guard (SLRD) coaches of Garib Rath trains, four seats in reserved Second Class
sitting and AC Chair Car in those trains which have more than two coaches of
these classes, and four seats in Vande Bharat trains.

Specially designed seats

The sources added that two specially designed seats (Seat No. 40) will be
available for PwDs in coaches C1 and C7 in the case of eight-car trains, and C1
and C14 in 16-car trains, along with an additional adjacent seat for an escort
or attender in Vande Bharat Express trains.

To avoid misuse of the provision, the facility of booking tickets under the PWD
quota online will only be available to people who have been issued with Unique
Identity Cards by Indian Railways. To book tickets at reservation counters, the
facility will be extended on the production of a Unique Identity Card or the
copy of the concessional certificate in the prescribed format.

The Centre for Railway Information Systems, the IT arm of the railways, was
told to modify its computerised reservation software to ensure the verification
of Unique Idenitity Cards even in those trains where concessional fare facility
is not available.

Undecided on concessions for seniors

In case both of the specially designed seats earmarked for PWDs in Vande Bharat
express trains are booked, but one or both of the seats reserved for their
accompanying escorts remained vacant, such vacant seat or seats will also be
allotted to a passenger with a disability.

Under the old guidelines, PWDs and their escorts were provided accommodation
under the quota only in those trains which allowed booking tickets with fare
concessions, the sources said. They added that no decision has been taken yet
on restoring the rail travel concession to senior citizens and other categories
of passengers who were given concessional fares before the pandemic.

Want to take this opportunity to thank all my mentors (whom I could meet only
because of the mailing list) for all your support and guidance.

Just to add more and summarise

Please worry about uncontrollable and trust your capabilities. The modern
medical research reveals that human brain is hardwired to produce best

everyone, initially struggles may be more but you never know this is how
you will find a way and opportunity to grow and excel.

2024-05-07 Thread Preeti Monga
A lot of great suggestions have been made here. I wish to offer to help the
student to come out of her distress regarding what people say to us when they
find out we are blind! Please feel free to share my number with her and I will
try to do my best to help her get over all these silly things!

I say silly things is because that is only what it is!

Everyone wants to feel grater and better than the other person! When they the
sighted world sees us as performing citizens, it is very painful and difficult
for them to digest this matter and they wish to somehow dampen our spirit and
put us down so that we get out of the race ourselves and leave all the success
to them!

I don’t think we need to waste our time changing people, for it is so very
difficult for anyone to change oneself, so how can we even imagine that we can
change the world! Just do your best and just feelsympathy for people who
treat us like that!

Just do your thing and be happy! For when you are successful only then you
become the target for people to shoot down!

I agree. Let's not take everything to our hearts. Try to senticize only those
around or whenever we get an opportunity to address a large gathering.
Otherwise, let our deeds and actions speak for themselves. If somebody is so

[AI] People with disabilities to get quotas in all trains irrespective of fare concessions - The Hindu

2024-05-07 Thread Rahul Gambhir

People with disabilities to get quotas in all trains irrespective of fare
concessions

https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/differently-abled-passengers-to-get-q
uota-in-all-trains-irrespective-of-concession/article68142046.ece

The Ministry of Railways has approved quotas for people with disabilities
(PwDs) in all trains, irrespective of whether any concessional fare facility
is available or not.

According to railway sources, the PwD quota will be earmarked in all
reserved Express/Mail trains, including Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto,
Humsafar, Gatimaan, and Vande Bharat express trains.

According to the revised norms, the quota will be: four berths in Sleeper
Class (two lower and two middle), four berths in Three Tier AC, 3E or 3A,
(two lower and two middle), four berths in the Specially Designed Second
Class Luggage cum Guard (SLRD) coaches of Garib Rath trains, four seats in
reserved Second Class sitting and AC Chair Car in those trains which have
more than two coaches of these classes, and four seats in Vande Bharat
trains.

Specially designed seats

The sources added that two specially designed seats (Seat No. 40) will be
available for PwDs in coaches C1 and C7 in the case of eight-car trains, and
C1 and C14 in 16-car trains, along with an additional adjacent seat for an
escort or attender in Vande Bharat Express trains.

To avoid misuse of the provision, the facility of booking tickets under the
PWD quota online will only be available to people who have been issued with
Unique Identity Cards by Indian Railways. To book tickets at reservation
counters, the facility will be extended on the production of a Unique
Identity Card or the copy of the concessional certificate in the prescribed
format.

The Centre for Railway Information Systems, the IT arm of the railways, was
told to modify its computerised reservation software to ensure the
verification of Unique Idenitity Cards even in those trains where
concessional fare facility is not available.

Undecided on concessions for seniors

In case both of the specially designed seats earmarked for PWDs in Vande
Bharat express trains are booked, but one or both of the seats reserved for
their accompanying escorts remained vacant, such vacant seat or seats will
also be allotted to a passenger with a disability.

Under the old guidelines, PWDs and their escorts were provided accommodation
under the quota only in those trains which allowed booking tickets with fare
concessions, the sources said. They added that no decision has been taken
yet on restoring the rail travel concession to senior citizens and other
categories of passengers who were given concessional fares before the
pandemic.
