Re: [AI] Please recommend me Any good Android phone/tablet
Hi Minar, the phone has 5000 Mah battery, since phone comes with stock android, the accessibility is quite at grater level! comes with 4 Gb ram, 64 GB storage. the phone is equipped with mediatec helio G85 processor, so processor is good for screen reader user's point of view. The only con you could possibally think of, is that phone comes with android 10, but Micromax may give upgrades for newer android versions. but since she is a basic user, having android 10/11 may not matter much. Re: [AI] Suggestion for a good portable bluetooth speaker
Hi sir, My suggestion would be for you to go with a speaker that has vired as well as bluetooth connectivity. Therefore i would suggest you go for JBL Eklips or JBL to go speaker. Both of them have a battery backup of up to 5 hours. Thanks, Bhavesh. It is a guide for people who have never used JAWS before, but who need to use a screen reader to become productive again with their computer. To download the book for free, please visit http://www.backtoworkblind.blogspot.com/ The book itself is a zipped set of Rich Text Format (RTF) files that can be read using any word processor. There is absolutely no cost, ads, registrations r commercial aspects to this whatsoever. I wrote this book after losing my vision three years ago. As many of you know, it is hard work adjusting to using a computer entirely through a keyboard and synthesized speech. At first, even the simplest of tasks can seem overwhelming. My hope is that this book will give new JAWS users techniques, tips, and strategies needed to become a productive JAWS user in a very short period of time. It covers the basics of working with Windows 7, the Internet, and Microsoft Office programs. I would love to receive feedback on how to make the book even more useful for new JAWS users. Please feel free to send me any comments or suggestions at backtoworkbl...@gmail.com. George Calvert -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Hi Sir, Looking at the supported future updates, I would highly recommend you to go for the iPhone 5/5c/5s, as they have much better hardware specs and would support more features in the up-coming IOS8 and later than the iPhone 4s. It has built in FM radio and it can play music from memory card. You can also attach any device using the supplied 3.5 mm jack cable. You can also attach pen drive using a OTG cable. The good thing is that for selecting different modes you do not need to see any LED or screen. The different modes are announced in clear voice. When you pair it with your mobile etc. it also informs you if the pairing is successful. It is a useful accessory to your mobile phone or tablet specially for listening to music or watching movies. It is available in stores and in the online shops for around Rs. 1500. [AI] Fwd: [TTZ] Will we be saying, bye bye to Braille!
Researchers from MIT Media Labs are developing a wearable device that can read out printed text using a synthesized voice, helping the sight-impaired read books without the use of Braille. Called the FingerReader, the ring-like device has a mounted camera for scanning text. Audio feedback comes in the form of a robot voice that sounds like it has a speech impediment. However, according to the research team's website, the device is just a research prototype at this point, so audio feedback would be fixed if and when it becomes available to the mass market. To help the sight-impaired read text more efficiently, the device has cues or haptic feedback to help blind readers maintain a straight scanning motion with their finger. It gives out a vibration signal when their finger veers away from the line of text, and does the same thing when they've reached the end and the start of every line of text. The device can't read the fine print in your contracts, but it can detect 12-point printed text, which is ubiquitous enough when it comes to printed text. In an interview with TechCrunch, Roy Shilkrot, one of the researchers for the project, hopes that the device will help more than the visually impared. He said that the device is for people with disability, ability, and superability and hinted that it could be used to translate languages. http://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/fingerreader-h... The team behind the FingerReader is said to be looking into miniaturization and features such as tethering to a PC or smartphone. If you want to see the device in action, check out the demo video below. http://vimeo.com/86912300#at=31 -- with best regards, Bhavesh. Re: [AI] How to stop jaws announcing grafic#
Hi Mohib, Follow the steps given below in order to not make jaws announce graphic announcement: If you're using jaws 12 or prior then: 1. When in the file/programmes list, open insurt+V to invoke the JAWS verbocity dialogue box. 2. Press G, untill you here jaws say Graphic verbocity all graphics. 3. press spacebar to change the settings to Labelled. 4. Press escape to close the dialogue. Note: all the steps also apply when you do the same in settings center. If you're using jaws 13 and later, then there is only 1 difference that is, you will landup in a search box when you press insurt+V. You may type in grapic without the quotes of some initial letters of the word. The search results shown below will be filtered accordingly. You can press down arrow to read the results filtered. When you are done with appropriate settings, press escape to close the dialogue. Hope it helps. Thanks, Bhavesh. Hi Friends, I have a query with regards to doing the signature. Firstly, is that possible to modify my current signature (which is currently thum impression)? Actually i am a totally blind person, and I want to sign every time i do any bank related activity, such as withdrawing the amount. The people in the concerned branch of SBI say, that I can't do any signature, as i am totally blind. And that's the reason they are not excepting my current pan card, which has my full signature. My understanding is, that if one feels confertabel to sign, then why isn't he or she allowed to do so? Thanks in advance, Bhavesh. -- with best regards, Bhavesh. I immensely enjoy reading books, and it's very hard to find good books in an accessible format. I know that the level of accessibility offered by the Kindle isn't great, but I believe it's still decent. So, please share your suggestions about this. Is there any other accessible reading device that you would recommend for reading books? Re: [AI] My first two weeks with Samsung S3
Hi all, I think all of us can use the touch screen devices efficiently. Even I was also scared from the touch screen devices when I was given An I phone for the first time at my company (Barrierbreak technologies). However with some practice, I can now use it without hezitency! I can even demo if required to sighted folks. even for those who are scared from android, there are a few softwares like eyes-free keyboard to help you out. or if your budget is a little higher, you can go for eyescrem sandwhich devices, which has touch and explore feature built in talkback. and with the powerfull GPS accuracy, android shines! I think if a totally blind person like me can use the touch screen, then why cant you all use it?? All the best! Bhavesh. There is a Hindi TTS on iOS. I do not think you can change the entire interface of the iPhone or iPad to Hindi. But if there is web content in Hindi like bbc.co.uk/Hindi, if you have enabled it, the iPhone switches to Hindi TTS for reading the text. Hindi is one of the options in Settings General Accessibility VoiceOver Language Rotor. And the TTS quality is very good in my opinion. I am probably chipping in too late in this discussion but for blind users requiring screen reader support, Talkback really falls way behind VoiceOver. I did a couple of blog posts about my experience with Talkback and Android JellyBean here http://kirankaja12.wordpress.com/2012/08/02/random-thoughts-on-android-jelly bean-and-google-nexus-7-accessibility/ and http://kirankaja12.wordpress.com/2012/08/12/android-jellybean-accessibility- continued-books-music-movies-and-youtube/. And the Android JellyBean version hasn't hit the Samsung Galaxy S3 yet. if as a screen reader user, you still want to buy an Android handset, you may be better off buying one of the Google branded devices such as the Galaxy Nexus. This is because they are stock Android and do not have any additional skins/customised interfaces which usually do not work with Talkback. I believe there are also ways to install unofficial Android firmware on devices like Galaxy S3 but do it at your own risk. One other reason for selecting Android is the price. There are a lot of cheaper Android devices than either the iPhone and Galaxy S3. On the other hand if you are a partially sighted user, you may appreciate the large 4.8 inch display of the Galaxy S3. And I heard that text enlargement/screen magnification features will be improved in Android soon. I don't know if it will be as good as the Zoom feature on iOS however. Just my two cents worth... -Original Message- From: AccessIndia [mailto:accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in] On Behalf Of Srinivasu Chakravarthula Sent: 09 October 2012 10:29 To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Cc: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Subject: Re: [AI] My first two weeks with Samsung S3 Hi, I sent a twitter message to Kiran asking him for clarification.. Hi folks, Here is an in-depth look at both the operating systems, I Phone and Android respectively. I am pasteing 3 links to collection of audio podcasts I downloaded from various websites for you. These can be used to decide whether you want to purchase any of the OS . The details are below. Note: if HTTPS prevents you from downloading the file, you can copy the URL, and paste it in the address bar of your browser and remove the letter s from the URL . 1. these are purely Iphone based podcasts. Although some are done with Iphhone 3gs, they might be helpfull for your basics of Voiceover. https://dl.dropbox.com/u/11136634/I%20Phone.zip the file size is 340 MB 2. An in-depth look at the android OS, including GPS. https://dl.dropbox.com/u/11136634/android.zip the file size is 410 MB 3. and finally, for those who are confused between which OS to choos, here are some IOS and Android comparison podcasts which may help you choos one OS: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/11136634/Android%20and%20Iphone%20compareson.zip the file size is 81.3 MB I hope that these prove helpfull to you. Using the IVR during a call 2. looking up contacts during a call 3. distinguishing between outgoing, incoming and missed calls in the log is not straight forward 4. looking up contacts with touch screen is time taking although I am now getting good results with voice search 5. GPS navigation experience is not as smooth as NOKIA although it is more accurate 6. most of the times you will need two hands to operate touch screen phones 7. operating the touch screen when the phone is held close to the ear may not be possible, you may feel the need for hands free many times There may be more items to this list. But the android device feels much more than a phone in the hand. It gives you the feeling as if it is a device with life and immense possibilities. It is definitely much more than a phone and for people who use the phone only for calling the time spent on learning it is a waste. And I feel sorry for talks and spiel as they are being compared to a commercial product like TALKS. Talks should be compared more to mobile accessibility in the case of android. Mobile accessibility does fill up many accessibility shortcomings in android.
