Recently I heard about a phone named alto second.
This phone as I was told is made in England which works in Java platform.

[AI] Windows8 and sound problems.

Dear friends,
As the subject line refers, I am facing problems with windows8.
Installed it in two pcs and in a virtual machine.
I had to be much disappointed as there was no sound to be heard after 
installation.
Though the audio driver is detected, it is shown that, the audio device 
is disabled.

The motherboards of the two PCS were intel and asus respectively.
Any idea?

it's performance.
But, I am not an antivirus man as I use linux and I enjoy formatting and

danger.  Also, most of the forums are not easily accessible.  There is no
heading tags for each reply.
What is Windows defender?  As suggested by AVG forum, please turn off or
uninstall any other security products if installed, I have turned off the
windows defender.  should I do it?  Now, I have completed my 7th attempt to
install AVG.
There is no problem with AVG in XP.
Can someone help me.

Ok here you go

1. press f2 and change the file extension from epub to zip 2. extract the
zip file into a new temporary folder.
3. as per my experience, you should be able to find some htm / html files
somewhere within the extracted folders. This are the files where you will
find your whole book quote split across into two or more files. Just copy
the data from html files to a new txt file.
4. or better still, try if you can use any html to text converter like
textpal, for instance.

If someone is keen to contribute their MS dos batch script expertise to
develop a simple tool to convert epub to txt, just syed.fame me on skype.

There are two ways to do this.
1. Through firefox go to dropbox.com and loggin to your account.
2. search for the file you wish to share.
3. Once you find the link, press the applications key and press down 
arrow and hit enter on copy link location.

4. Paste the information in an Email.
The person who receives the Email will be easily able to download the 
file by clicking on the link given by you.
If you have installed free download manager, go to dropbox and loggin to 
your account.

Find the file you wish to share and press enter on the link.
An add download dialogue will appear. Press tab  and press enter on the 
ok button.
If you don't wish to download the file, you can easily cancel the 
download by pressing tab and pressing enter on the cancel button.
If I am right, in this dialogue box itself, you can get the URL of the 
download link of the file.

If I am wrong, don't worry.
On the desktop, press enter on the free download manager icon.
Press down arrow or the end key to go to the details of the last download.
Press alt+enter there.
In the coming up property dialogue box, You will be able to find the URL 
of the download link.
Copy paste it to the Email relax and wait for your friend to give you a 
thanking reply.

Very easy.
Install thunderbird and activate it.
Go through the dialogue box as prompted.
But, before that, You must go to your Gmail account and enable the pop 
access feature.
For this, you will have to go to the settings, forward and pop and 
enable the radio button Mails arrives from now onwards radio button.
If you wish to work with multiple computers, then, you can also enable 
the imap radio button.

Well, let's come back to thunderbird.
Once you have configured your account in thunderbird, when you delete an 
Email from your inbox, it will go into the trash.

In thunderbird, you can select Emails by shift up and down arrow keys.
Pressing the delete key will arace the Emails.

get something out of it every time I read it.  As a printed document it would 
also be available to reluctant family members and friends who really don't know 
how blind people manage independent travel.

Dear all,
You would have noticed a few days back an Email from Sinoj regarding the 
TTS launched recently.
You would have also noticed my views regarding the TTS not only in this 
platform but also in accessindia.
The TTS project is headed by Professor Hema Murthy who heads the 
computer department in IIT chennai.
She has given me all the assurance to improve the quality of the 
Malayalam TTS when she spoke to me over the phone yesterday and I plan 
to be in constant touch with her.
What we have to do is to give feedback to professor Hema for the further 
improvement of the software.
What I have noticed during my two month stint with CDAC and the training 
experience which I had is, Most of the trainees don't come up with 
creative criticism or feedback.
When interviewed by CDAC officials, most of the trainees expressed 
satisfaction about the TTS.
Indeed, we are satisfied and grateful  for those who come up with such 
initiatives.
But, this shouldn't give false belief to those who are responsible  to 
the extend that, whatever they do is good and fine.
What I mean is, we have to point out the bugs and shortcomings of the 
products they make without any fear.
At the same time, we must make sure that, we don't go overboard with our 
negative criticisms.
Huge amount of money is involved in these kinds of projects and We must 
make use of the platforms like Keralavision and accessindia and so on to 
express ourselves hence becoming a part of these kinds of initiatives.
I know, things can't be changed overnight and we will have to struggle 
and strive for our goals relentlessly.

If we are not ready to do this, we will only get what others give us.
Let's hope that, projects like the TTS and the OCR will see light and in 
a good way!

tip from Mr. Bhavani Shankerverma.
It was to put the lame.dll file to the system 32 folder in windows 
and it worked well.

This I did with a desktop.
Now I am facing the same problem with my laptop after doing the above 
mentioned step.
Even after copying the dll file inside the system32 folder, Kurzweil 
is still saying Sorry! No compressing software is installed in your 
computer.
I have installed k-light which will give all the media codex and the 
latest winamp.

What should I do more?

If this is the case, how can we stop these kind of exploitation?
I forgot to mention that, some such software in fact Malayalam TTS was 
launched by an NGO named insight who went on receiving huge amounts of 
funds to promote free software.

The TTS in fact was good for nothing and it was launched by  some minister.
Well, it's hight time that we express our dissatisfaction about these 
kind of generous cheating to the authorities.

Hope, I haven't exceeded the limits with my expressions.

It was told by the CDAC officials that, there will be a second face for the
development of this TTS.
We can all hope hoping against hope that, we will get something usable after
the promised second face.
However I am sure that, there will be another launching of the product in
some other pet names by some other VIP's and much media hipe if at all there
will be a second face.

It is not the lack of feedback which prevent them from  improving the 
products.

It is the lack of attitude to do so.
For me, their attitude seems they will give whatever they wish and you 
will have to take it without any complaint.

I had met Hema murthy in person and had a few hints about this.
At the least, Chennai IIT has employed a VI to test the quality of the 
Tamil TTS.

This was the case with the maratti and Bangla TTS.
Persons are there to test these ones.
Though a bit late, I too was involved with the Malayalam TTS with CDAC 
Thiruvananthapuram.

The feedbacks were not received with satisfaction.
Can't do much about it was their reply most of the times.
Please don't be too optimistic about the efficiency of the TTS.

I didn't understand what madam is trying to convey. To my understanding,
more users we have, more bugs will be explored. So, we will pave the way for
an outstanding product in future. The only down side is that she will be the
single person to handle thousands of emails everyday, which is a genuine
problem. Last time in 2005 it was much better where they did have online
form to request the CD.

[AI] Problem in creating MP3 files in Kurzweil

Dear all,
a month ago, I had the same query to the list and got a very useful tip 
from Mr. Bhavani Shankerverma.
It was to put the lame.dll file to the system 32 folder in windows and 
it worked well.

This I did with a desktop.
Now I am facing the same problem with my laptop after doing the above 
mentioned step.
Even after copying the dll file inside the system32 folder, Kurzweil is 
still saying Sorry! No compressing software is installed in your computer.
I have installed k-light which will give all the media codex and the 
latest winamp.

What should I do more?
Hope, Bhavaniji will help me again in this regard.

granded sanction for a proposal submitted by them to publish an
anthology of the visually challenged. the particulars are as follows.



COLLECTING AND PUBLISHING ARTICLES AND CREATIVE WRITING OF VISUALLY
CHALLENGED IN KERALA.


Introduction

Studies on the Disabled is one of the emerging areas of the
contemporary academic scenario. In the past decades many important
initiatives have been taken both nationally and internationally to
promote the interests of the persons with disabilities. The UN
convention on “Persons with Disabilities” and the Persons with
Disabilities (equal opportunities, protection of rights and full
participation) Act 1995 passed by the Government of India are two
major steps in this direction. Though technology has created a great
space for the communities like visually challenged, they have not yet
started producing literature to discuss their problems, experience and
aesthetics. Especially in South Indian states no work has been done in
this respect either by the challenged community or the sighted who are
very close to the community. As per the last census 2.5% of the
population of India is differently-abled and the 48% of this group is
visually challenged. In this age where even the sexual minorities like
Gay, Lesbian and the transgendered have developed their own
theoretical perspectives to highlight their issues, it is little
wonder to note that such a strong intellectually rooted community
like visually challenged has not yet moved in that direction. So any
work done in this area will be highly useful and productive.


Objectives

 Collecting, editing, translating into English and publishing the
works, articles, interviews, autobiographical snippets and other
creative endeavours of the visually challenged in Braille, sighted
script and e-format.
 To incorporate observations and articles of those who work very
close to the visually challenged (teachers, trainers, psychologists
and social activists).
 Trace the aesthetic experience of the visually challenged giving
emphasis to the authenticity of their perception.
 Undertake an enquiry on why the aesthetics and theoretical
perspective of the visually challenged have not yet been formulated in
spite of the technological advancement.
 Focus on the society’s stereotypes in the perception and
construction of the visually challenged
 To nourish the creative dynamics of the visually challenged and
foster an interest in them towards excellence by providing new
avenues.
 To analyse the projection in the mass media including films and
bring out the fallacies of the sighted with regard to the identity of
the visually challenged.
 To open the eyes of the general public to the issues relating to
visual impairment.

Relevance


Farook College being one of the earliest educational institutions in
Malabar, has the tradition of promoting the interest of the persons
with disabilities including visually challenged. It is already
providing special facilities like the Digital Talking Book Library,
Braille Literature and recorded resource materials for the visually
challenged. A Forum named “Insight” is functioning in the College to
hone up the artistic, literary and athletic skills of this challenged
community. In the long history of its course over 500 visually
challenged have done their studies in Farook College and many are
highly placed. About 40 students are doing their studies in the
College now. Hence publishing an anthology of this kind will give the
College an avenue to represent the interests of such a very important
section in society. It will help to bring to light the real issues of
the visually challenged and to suggest solutions.

The year 2009 is being celebrated as the bi-centenary of the birth
anniversary of Louis Braille who was instrumental in elevating the
status of the visually challenged to the present level. By introducing
the Braille script and promoting education among the visually
challenged through special institutions he aspired to create an
identity for them. A work of this nature will be a tribute and highly
relevant and significant to celebrate the reformatory spirit instilled
by people like him.

It is high time that a platform be formed to discuss the issues
relating to the visually challenged. It is hoped that this study will
be a step in the right direction.


Methodology


 Materials for the Project would be collected with the help of
Associations like Kerala Federation of the Blind, Society for the
Rehabilitation of the Visually Challenged and any other NGOs working
in this area.
 Interviews and interactive sessions with celebrated persons and
researchers in this area will be held.
 Creative works, other writings and observations will also be
gathered through the media and Internet.
 Workshops and Seminars will be organised to identifying and discuss
issues and

Instead of Creating filters, the easiest way to avoid an Email coming to 
one's inbox is to place that Email to the spam folder.

This is how to do  it.
1. Check the Email you don't wish to have in your inbox or outlook express.
2. press letter b to go to the spam button and press enter.
From then onwards,
 The Emails from that particular address will always go to the spam 
folder not bothering you anymore.

After logging on with Ubuntu, do the following.
1. Press alt+control+t to open terminal.
2. type update-grub and press enter.
 type your password when prompted and press enter.
Ubuntu will update the grub listing the operating systems installed in a 
few seconds.

In fact, you can listen to it with orca.
3. Assuming that you are in the terminal still, type the following words.
sudo gedit /boot/grub/grub.cfg and press enter.
The text editor will open and there, find the line set default=0
Delete 0 and type 4 instead.
Save the file and restart.
From the next time onwards, Windows will be the default OS.

It is easy if you use outlook express.
First go to the addressbook by
Pressing shift+control+B.

and after activating outlook express, can importit through the file menu.

Was struggling to get a tool wich can extract . E X E files.
Came across one yesterday.
Universal extracter.
Now trying hard to make a Windows XP cd wich can contain at least the 
audio driver if not more.
If successful, the driver will also be installed along with the 
installation of windows.

I have not tried N-lite, but just curious so far I have not come across
any
way by which we can install the windows through automated process in the
one
specified partition without touching your existing set of partitions. If
that is not possible, then using this method is not so useful in general
of
course exception being the specified circumstances as per the case.
However long back I red somewhere that if you specify index location then
it
is possible, but how it is done, no guide on that.
If you have any idea on that please do let me know.

Recently, one of my students,  a medical practitioner, and an office 
superindentend working in a hospital was harassed by a vigilance officer 
virtually for no reasons.
She has started fighting back on my advice and I shall ask her to give 
you a more detailed account.

There is no point for us to suffer all these kind of acts silently.
Therefore, my suggestion is to fight it out till we get justice.

Very happy to see your Email here!
There is nothing much to do with the embosser.
What you have to look for is the margin settings.
The top and the bottom margin will be probably 1 and you mostly won't 
need to change it.

The inner margin will again be 0 and the outer margin will be 4.
You will need to change the outer margin to 7.
This depends mostly on the size of the paper you use.
Unfortunately, you missed a great opportunity to do much exploration on 
this when you where in the IISE with me.

anyways, believe me, there is nothing much to do with the embosser.
You can press alt+d to go to the document menu and use tab and the arrow 
key to look at different options.

Hope this helps for a start.

[AI] A few thoughts on subjecct lines and postings.

Dear list,
Would like to share my thoughts on subject lines and postings.
Can't we avoid continuing discussion on the same subject for long?
For example, The topic behavior of my superior is on the list for at 
least more than a week.
Still the topic is continuing even after the moderator's suggestion of 
closing the thread.

Can't we go on a much faster pace covering more topics?
Then again, the subject lines has much importance as far as a list has 
concerned.

For example, A query, help needed, somethings to share ETC.
These subject lines don't reflect the actual need or the topic a person 
wishes to discuss or share with the list.

Of course, one can open the Email and read the contence.
But, due to the heavy traffic on the list and persons subscribing to 
different lists such as this, Won't it be a good idea to put appropriate 
subject lines to allow the member to open the Emails of his or her choice?

Again, can't we send the congratulatory messages to the concerned persons?
I think, this is the most repeated suggestion in the list over the years.
Finally, I will be much appreciative if you read this Email and give it 
a thought before sending the next posting to the list.
These are my personal thoughts and no offense is meant to any member of 
the list.

Vinux is a distribution made out of ubuntu.
This is done to enhance accessibility

It is easy to install and more accessible.

 Does it support any email client?
Of course.
It has Evolution and it is an Email client.
You can also use thunderbird.
 how far its spreadsheet and word processors are accessible from a blind 
person's perspectives?  .

It is mostly accessible.
But, keystrokes are different and you will not be as comfortable using 
open office compared to MS office and JAWS.
But, there is no harm in try and use it, as, many are using it with 
reasonable ease.

Burn an audio CD

Insert a blank CD-R into your CD writer and launch Brasero Disc Burner, which

you'll find under Sound  Video in the Applications menu. Click the Audio

project button under the 'Create a new project:' heading.

Add some audio files by clicking the green + button and browsing to your music.

Brasero supports any format for which you have the codecs installed. Fire it up

immediately after you install Ubuntu and you'll find it won't even support MP3s.

To install a codec, simply search for the formats you need in Synaptic Package

Manager and mark them for installation. When this is done, choose the files you

want to burn. Ctrl-A selects all files in the folder, or click on the first one

you want, hold Shift and click on the last to select a block of files.

Click Add and the files will be added to the project. You can type a title for

the CD in the box at the bottom, and double-click on each track to edit the

information; this is useful if you have a CD player that displays text. You can

split tracks using the knife icon in the toolbar, while the pause icon adds a

two-second pause after a track.

Click the Burn button in the bottom corner. The only option you may want to

change if you have problems burning discs is to reduce the speed to a setting

lower than the default Maximum. Once you've clicked Burn, Brasero will make all

the tracks the same volume (normalisation), write the CD text information and

then burn the tracks. When the process is complete, the disc should eject and

be ready to play.

How to...

Burn an iSO image

Often you'll want to burn a CD or DVD from an ISO image you've downloaded,

perhaps when a newer version of Ubuntu becomes available or you want to install

another Linux distribution. Brasero can handle this with the minimum of hassle.

An ISO image is like a Zip archive of all the files on a CD or DVD. When you

burn an ISO image, the files within it are written to the disc in the correct

folder structure. Download the ISO image you want to burn, launch Brasero and

click Burn image.

Insert a suitable disc for the size of the image to be burned into your CD or

DVD writer. The size of the ISO file tells you the minimum disc size you'll

need. As we're burning a Ubuntu 9.10 disc, we'll use a CD-R, as the ISO file is

698MB.

The Image Burning Setup window will appear. You'll need to select the ISO

image, so browse to the folder or drive where it's located.

Now click the Properties button. You can alter the burning speed here, but it's

advisable to choose a speed less than the maximum rated speed of your disc only

if you find there are errors when you burn the disc. You can choose to leave

the disc open - so that more files can be added later - but as we're leaving

just 3.9MB of free space, there's no point in this example. If your CD or DVD

writer supports a 'burnproof' mode (which most do), ensure that this box is

ticked. Finally, click the Close button.

All that's left to do is click the Burn button. Brasero will display a progress

bar telling you how long is left and what is being written to the disc. When

the disc is burned, it should automatically eject from the drive, unless you

unticked that option.

It's a good idea to write on the disc so you remember what's on it, but it's now

ready to use. In this case, the disc is bootable, so it can be popped into the

drive of the computer on which we want to install Ubuntu. If you do the same

but find the computer doesn't boot from the CD, you may need to enter your PC's

BIOS to change the order of boot devices, making sure the CD or DVD drive is the

first, or at least comes before the hard disk.
