Re: [AI] Preferential Delivery by BigBasket- Complete Process

2020-04-29 Thread Harish Kumar P Kotian
Hi Asif

Considering the difficulties of disabled persons obtaining provisions in this
current times, we independently worked up with Bigbasket and worked with them
the entire process of preferential delivery.

We have no idea of CII or any individuals or NGO's working with them in
parallel.

We certainly thank everyone involved. What we consider more important is the
effectiveness of the service rather than ordaining the hat.

While we appreciate BGFI effort; I would like to state this on record that I,
being part of CII national skilling of PwD connected to founder of big basket
through CII subcommittee chairman and they have initiated these measures.
Request BGFI to appreciate colaborative effort and not totally write off effort
made by other organization.
It is a tough time for all of us and any measures which would improve lives of
Pwd by any organization is certainly appreciated by the entire community.

2020-04-27 Thread Harish Kumar P Kotian
Hi
I hope you have installed the app with the same number you have filled in the
online form.
I did get a call from them and afterconfirming my registration details, They
did tell me the time when delivery slots would open. In the meantime I had
already added to cart the items I required and also put enough money in the
Bigbasket wallet.
However, when I tried to grab a delivery slot, it was gone. Later on the
Bigbasket representative called me again I informed that I could not get any
delivery slot. She did the needful and made a slot available from her end.
I shall get my delivery today noon. If it was not for the priority effort, I
would again fail yesterday.
The system works for sure for us.
Harish.

Hi,

Has anybody succeeded in getting preferential delivery from Bigbasket? I had
submitted the form but did not get any call from their customer service.
When I called up the customer service, they told me they do not have any policy
of preferential delivery to persons with disability/senior citizens.

Dears,
Namasthee all. Shri Avinash shahi is certainly not of topic and this news link
is beneficial to all AI members, who are GOI employees.
But the fault is the tone and tenor of this particular news report.
The Hindu as a news paper is prone to providing news slanted against BJP
Government, whether at the Center or in any state where the party is in power.
This news paper is habituated to providing white washed news of state
governments ruled by Opposition parties and to providing flattering news in
case of Left ruled state in particular.
Under the present circumstance, I deem it the patriotic duty of every
government employee to sacrifice a day's salary every month during
2020-21 for the sake of the country. It is cheap on the part of a socalled
'National newspaper" to publish such a piece.
I commend Mr Hhahi for posting news of interest on a regular basis.

[AI] Zoom privacy: Vendor faces lawsuits over Facebook data-sharing

Zoom privacy: Vendor faces lawsuits over Facebook data-sharing

Published: 31 Mar 2020
Two Zoom subscribers have sued the video conferencing company in sperate
class-action lawsuits, accusing it of sharing user data with Facebook without
permission.
click xai=AKAOjstyFFQ3oKY5TPTw...
The federal lawsuits, filed Monday and Tuesday, allege Zoom failed to properly
disclose that its iOS app was transmitting information about users' devices to
the social media giant.
Zoom released a new version of its client for Apple mobile devices on Friday to
remove the connection to Facebook. However, users must install the update
themselves. Before the fix, the app informed Facebook about each user's IP
address, advertising ID, mobile carrier, device model, iOS version, time zone
and language settings, among other data, according to the lawsuit.
Zoom said it was unaware Facebook was collecting those metrics before an
investigation by the news outlet Vice brought the issue to light last week. The
video conferencing company apologized to customers and said it was reviewing
its protocols to avoid similar missteps in the future.
Zoom's privacy and security practices have come under increased scrutiny in
recent weeks. Many new customers have begun using the video conferencing
product amid the coronavirus pandemic, including universities and K-12 school
systems.
The New York attorney general's office recently asked Zoom in a letter whether
it had implemented any new security practices in response to the surge in
traffic. The office also wanted to know how Zoom prevented hacking, The New
York Times reported Tuesday.
In a statement, Zoom said it took "users' privacy, security, and trust
extremely seriously" and would be happy to provide the attorney general's
office with the requested information.
The letter comes amid reports that uninvited guests have been joining and
disrupting Zoom meetings, a practice dubbed "Zoombombing."
The vendor has so far responded to the phenomenon by reminding users not to
share publicly their meeting room codes, which are permanent. Zoom also told
users they could activate optional controls, including one that lets meeting
hosts approve attendees before they join.
Meanwhile, Zoom on Sunday updated its privacy policy to be more transparent
about what customer data it collects and how it uses that information. In a
blog post announcing the changes, Zoom emphasized that it neither sells user
data nor monitors the content of meetings held on its platform.
Zoom faces potential class-action lawsuit
Robert Cullen of Sacramento, Calif., and Samuel Taylor of Florida are the
plaintiffs in the two lawsuits. Both have asked the court to let them bring a
class action against Zoom, so that other users whose data was shared with
Facebook could benefit from any settlement. The suits accuse Zoom of violating
the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and other state laws. Cullen and
Taylor both filed in the federal district court for Northern California under a
national law governing class actions.
Zoom's legal troubles started after it used an iOS software development kit
(SDK) from Facebook to let users log in to Zoom using their Facebook account.
The mobile app shared device information with Facebook even if users did not
have a Facebook account, Vice reported.
Facebook's terms of use for the SDK require partners to disclose that the
social media company may collect user data for "measurement services and
targeted ads."
As of March 11, Zoom's privacy policy did not explicitly mention sharing data
with Facebook in particular, according to a copy available through the Internet
Archive's Wayback Machine. The document said Zoom and its partners, including
advertisers, "collect some information about you when you use our products."
Facebook's SDKs have raised privacy concerns in the past. In February 2019, for
example, The Wall Street Journal reported that some apps were sharing intimate
details about their users with Facebook through an analytics tool within the
SDK.
It's common for mobile SDKs to collect data on users' devices, said Alan
Pelz-Sharpe, founder of research and advisory firm Deep Analysis. Such
practices have become so ubiquitous that some privacy advocates are now more
focused on limiting what companies can do with data than on preventing its
collection.
"This isn't just Zoom. This is pretty much everybody," Pelz-Sharpe said. "This
is a really awkward topic that tech doesn't want to talk about."
Zoom has faced criticism in the past

Hi
Actually, Banks have been classifying account as visually impaired for a very
long time now. For this they do not require disability certificate. It is an
internal process for them to exercise caution.
Moreover, in the account opening form, they make this remark.

Hi

In my understanding,an NGO cannot be closed or terminated by themselves.
Probably it is for this reason, reregistration is required every 5 years.
Legal experts may fill in. What is the deregistration process? Logically there
should be a sun set provision.

Subject: [AI] News of interest: Gareema Bangad reports: ‘Charitable
institutions are over-regulated in India’

their registration every five years through an amendment to the Income Tax Act
came under criticism at a public meeting in the city on Wednesday.
https://www.thehindu.noclick_com/todays-paper/tp-national/tp-mumbai/charitable-institutions-are-over-regulated-in-india/article31046373.ece
Experts and representatives from various trusts and non-government
organisations participated in the event organised by The Association for
Protection of Public Trusts and Charities. They have decided to present a
memorandum to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman expressing their
grievances.

Ms. Sitharaman had proposed substantial amendments for granting exemptions to
charitable and religious trusts in the Union Budget 2020. Under the new tax
regime, the Finance Minister proposed to introduce Section 12AB to grant
registration to charitable institutions, enabling them to claim exemption under
Section 11 of the Act.

All charitable institutions, including those registered under Sections 12AA or
12A, will now have to make a fresh application for registration on or before
August 31 to be eligible to claim the exemption. On receiving the application,
the Principal Commissioner of Income Tax or the Commissioner can grant
registration to the trusts under Section 12AB, after carrying out the required
examination. The registration granted after the examination will be valid only
for five years.

“The amendments are very few, but have far-reaching implications,”
said senior advocate Firoze Andhyarujina. The most crucial issue, he said, was
the requirement for charitable institutions to make a fresh application for
re-registration at the end of five years. “The other major issue is the
confusion as to the role of the assessing officer in determining the object of
the institution. The proposed amendments do not clearly state whether the
registration granted will be valid till the end of the assessment year or the
financial year after completion of five years,” Mr. Andhyarujina said.

Chief executive, Centre for Advancement of Philanthropy, Noshir Dadrawala, said
charitable institutions and trusts are the most over-regulated sector in India.

Chartered accountant Viren Merchant questioned the need to renew the
registration every five years. “If companies are not required to re-register,
then why do charitable institutions need to do so? When clauses for
cancellation of registration and scrutiny assessment exist, then what is the
need to re-register?” he asked.

If companies are not required to re-register, then why do charitable
institutions need to?

Hi Vaishnavi

This is indeed a commendable effort. It is very important to mainstream
accessibility products as it is both beneficial to the end users and the
producers.

Although this is a step in the right direction, it would be better if these
products are further categorised on disability based.
There are very few products for the blind and it takes a very long time going
through each of them.
The number of products available under this initiative is good.

Hi!

Have a disability? With the right kind of aid, the possibilities can be endless
to live life fully. Chennai's Museum of Possibilities

hopes to showcase assistive aids, adaptive hacks and rehab technologies to open
up a world beyond limitations. Located at Disability Commissioner's
beach-facing office, the 164.65 sq m hall area will broadly comprise 3 zones -
LIVE, WORK & PLAY.

The *LIVE* zone will incorporate accessibility features that could be
implemented in even the smallest TNSCB flat. The *WORK* zone will mostly be
office-based with a few NREGA tools in the garden outside.* PLAY* includes
entertainment.

After brainstorming (see mindmap below) the museum is slowly taking shape.

While we have directories of assistive aids
,
we are crowdseeking your top 5 suggestions on *Museum of Possibilities Idea
List* (For convenience it's on Amazon - Amazon's Idea lists feature isn't
collaborative yet, so a wishlist it is. Ignore the prices - this is *just to
get an idea of what you'd like featured - something indispensable that helps
you live life with your disability.* It's most likely not listed on Amazon, in
which case just click the* 'ADD IDEA TO LIST'* button and type it in)

*So get started - Closing date is ** Sunday 15th March 2020.* View list
 - No
Amazon account needed. Just added some random stuff for people to get started

Add to list
-
Amazon account needed.

If
this is too complicated for you, please just email DRA
 after checking out the curated
directories of assistive aids
.

Thanks!

Hi people, as the subject line suggests, one of my colleague is trying to
subscribe to this list through filling the form on the website of axisIndia but
she is unable to. She is not getting the confirmation mail on which she is
supposed to reply or click the link, she also checked the spam folder as well
but she hasn't got it yet. So in that case whom should she contact?
How to reach to Harish sir or the moderator?

Re: [AI] Tablet

2020-03-09 Thread Harish Kumar P Kotian
Hi
Having used both IOS and Android and Ipad specifically, Ipad is rugged. on
accessibility or usability there is not much difference.
I presume you are using Android device. You can consider Ipad to obtain a first
hand feel of IOS.
If you don't have the time or inclination to make yourself at home on a
different Os then, you can go for an Android tablet.

Harish.

Re: [AI] Tablet

2020-03-08 Thread Harish Kumar P Kotian
Hi
In terms of accessibility, tablet is not much different than the phone.
Whatever OS you are comfortable with you can go for it.
You also have the choice of broadening your choice for selecting the OS
different than that of your phone.
It is not really very difficult to use multiple OS, more or less the usability
is similar.

As Ajay touched blue-tooth keyboard is a good add on.
Harish.

Sir, there is a difference between religion and dharma. like difference between
English culture and English language. religion word came from church, resulting
to confrontation between many European kingdoms and churches.

Please let religion be stopped from poking its head everywhere.
It has got so many things wrong that if by chance it happens to say something
right, it provokes laughter.

Moreover, as a blind person, I always prefer a handshake to namaskar, though
it is almost a taboo in our Indian culture colored head to toe in religion
and though it may give me some virus by the way.
Smile.

Actually, why are we converting AI into sayeverything, anyway?
By replying to this thread, I am guilty too.

So, excuse me moderator, sorry.

The Sanatan Dharma has been talking about the importance of a namaste or
prannaam from the very beginning, no wonder our ancestors had opened
universities like Taxila and Nalanda where the entire world gained knowledge
and wisdom.

Hi,

Though Eloquence is no longer being developed, and previous one being offered
by the same site too, was not an authorized one, I wonder if this can be
considered as valid one as this is a modded version of the previous Eloquence
by the same people and may violate the copyright laws. Using it or not is a
personal choice but sharing it on the group needs to be re-thought.

Dear Friends,

Does any of our friends visited Tirumala recently.
How about the facilities offered by TTD committee for us.
I am planning to go there very soon.
How about the room booking procedures for us there.
How many days we can stay there.
Is there any special darshan arrangements for pwd persons.
I also want to know the nearby temples & places to visit there.
I am waiting for your valuable inputs.
Thanks in advance

[AI] Irritant with NVDA voice

Pl find below a post from George which did not get on the list.
I am also responding with inline.

Just yesterday, I believe the latest update from NVDA was released. I
downloaded the same and installed. I was surprise when the voice/speech had
dramatically dropped in quality. No idea how I can restore the earlier voice
quality. Presently it is quite an irritant to use NVDA. Any way out?
It is because most of the plugins have to be updated. You may change the
TTS to Windows Core voice for the present until there is clarity and fix for
the add-ons.

Hi All,

I have filed a case in the Delhi HC regarding inaccessible digital hardware

Across this list, I am sure people are using the mobile apps for various banks
and E-wallets.

It would be very useful if you could share with me the names of the apps you
use with regards banking and E-payments with the comment whether they are
accessible or not.

For example I have found the mobile app from ICICI bank inaccessible.

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Best,

Hi Subash
That was a very nice and clear interpretation. Nice to note that it does not
hamper the new judgement on reservation for the disabled on promotion.

Taking this argument forward, the deduction relief in 80 U of IT should
therefore continue in the new IT relief in the new regime. What about it?

Subject: Re: [AI] No fundamental right to claim reservation, State not bound to
provide reservation in promotion: SC

Dear Harish,

I feel the reservation in promotion in favour of SC and ST etc and reservation
in favour of persons with disabilities are two completely different matters.
The SC in recent judgement in Siddaraju Vs. State of Karnataka & Ors has amply
clarified this difference and how the limitation set by Indira Sawhney
judgement doesn't apply to promotion in reservation for people with
disabilities. SC had indicated in the order “A perusal of Indra Sawhney would
reveal that the ceiling of 50% reservation applies only to reservation in
favour of Other Backward Classes under Article 16(4) of the Constitution of
India whereas the reservation in favour of persons with disabilities is
horizontal, which is under Article 16(1) of the Constitution.”

Therefore, a preferential treatment on the basis of disability duly supported
by the Disability laws is valid and can not be equated with preferential
treatment on the basis of caste or religion. But sadly the bureaucracy had with
its understanding of Art 16 and selective interpretation of Indira Sawhney
judgement, changed the language about reservation in promotion in the RPwD Act
2016 and left it to the States to take a call on the reservation.

I feel the essence of UNCRPD, which is sought to be implemented through the new
RPwD Act is ignored when an existing relief or better provision is taken away
in the name of CRPD implementation. Article 4(4) o CRPD specifically provides
as under:

"4. Nothing in the present Convention shall affect any provisions which are
more conducive to the realization of the rights of persons with disabilities
and which may be contained in the law of a State Party or international law in
force for that State. There shall be no restriction upon or derogation from any
of the human rights and fundamental freedoms recognized or existing in any
State Party to the present Convention pursuant to law, conventions, regulation
or custom on the pretext that the present."

Thus the new RPwD Act provisions can not take away the right to reservation in
promotion that existed in the PWD Act 1995 in the garb of implementing CRPD.
This must be continued in favour of the people with disabilities as it existed
to be in compliance with article 4(4) of the convention as above.

Hope this clears the air.

Why American cities are stopping stores from going cashless

Printed from NEW YORK: New York City lawmakers voted on Thursday to require
stores and restaurants to accept cash for payment, saying businesses that
accept only credit and debit cards are discriminating against New Yorkers who
lack bank accounts and credit cards. "This practice punishes the underbanked,"
city council speaker Corey Johnson said before the council's
43-3 vote in favour of the bill. Under the bill, businesses that refuse cash
will be fined $1,000 for the first violation and $1,500 after that. The
measure, which is expected to go into effect by the end of the year, also
prohibits stores from charging higher prices for paying in cash. Backers of the
cashless model say the benefits include greater efficiency and eliminating the
risk of theft, but opponents say millions of Americans still rely on cash.
Philadelphia became the first US city to ban cashless stores last year. San
Francisco and New Jersey passed similar measures soon after.
Only one jurisdiction required businesses to accept cash before 2019:
Massachusetts, which passed a law nearly 40 years ago. Backers of the New York
City bill said that hundreds of thousands of city residents don't have bank
accounts or credit cards and that others simply prefer to use cash.
"Whatever your reasons, consumers should have the power to choose their
preferred method of payment," City councilman Ritchie Torres said.
Councilman Kalman Yeger, a Brooklyn Democrat, said that businesses should
accept cash but that the local government shouldn't force them to. But some
businesses that will be affected by the no cash ban said they will follow the
law when it is enacted. "We are proud to do business in NYC and will of course
comply with all NYC laws and statutes," Nick Marsh, CEO of Founders Table,
parent company of the Chopt Creative Salad Co. and Dos Toros Taqueria chains,
said in a statement. A company spokeswoman said six of New York City's 18 Chopt
locations and all of its 17 Dos Toros locations are currently cashless.

In a significant judgement, the Supreme Court on Friday said an individual
cannot claim reservation as a fundamental right and the government is not bound
to provide quota in promotion for the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe
employees in public jobs.

A bench of Justices L Nageswara Rao and Hemant Gupta said Articles 16
(4) and 16 (4-A) of the Constitution empowered the State to make reservation in
matters of appointment and promotion in favour of the Scheduled Castes and
Scheduled Tribes “if in its opinion, they are not adequately represented in the
services”.

The top court said it was for the state government to decide whether
reservations were required in the matter of appointment and promotions to
public posts.

“In view of the law laid down by this court, there is no doubt that the state
government is not bound to make reservations. There is no fundamental right
which inheres in an individual to claim reservation in promotions. No mandamus
can be issued by the court directing the state government to provide
reservations,”
the bench held.

The top court relied upon the Constitution bench judgements in Indra Sawhney
(1992), M Nagaraj (2006) and Jarnail Singh (2018) and Suresh Chand Gautam
(2016) cases, among others, to set aside the Uttarakhand HC's directions issued
on July 15, 2019 to the state government to implement reservations in promotion.

The HC's direction for filling up all future vacancies in post of Assistant
Engineers in PWD from the members of SC/STs was “wholly unjustifiable”, it said.

The bench found the HC's direction to collect quantifiable data was “wholly
unnecessary”, since the state government took a conscious decision not to
provide reservation in promotions.

The court said since the State was not bound to provide reservations in
promotions, it was not required to justify its decision on the basis of
quantifiable data, showing adequate representation of members of the Scheduled
Castes and Schedules Tribes in its services.

“Even if the under-representation of Scheduled Castes and Schedules Tribes in
public services is brought to the notice of this court, no mandamus can be
issued to the state government to provide reservation,” it said.

Hi
In that case you need to check out in plug in's of Crome and Firefox.
It may be available there. InCrome there is plugin for Epub, I think it is
called Simple Epub. Haven't checked lately as I don't use these other formats.

one more defect is that, it supports only two formats such as .epub and .pdf.

Hi Milan,

Just like you even I am coming on the list after a long long time.
I have been using the Bose Frames for the past few months and feel glad that I
took the plunge.

Bose Frames are an excellent piece of technology. These currently come in three
sizes.I have not had a more comfortable and convenient listening experience.I
find no issues with the durability. The voice quality on calls , especially with
face time calls is better than that of apple airpods or earpods. These are my
primary go to earphones for my spoken word consumption like audio books,
podcast , voice over.Though I do not use GPS quite a lot, I believe that for
visually challenged individuals, these are a match made in heaven for those
who use them for Gps.Infact post my getting the frames, another of my visually
challenged friends has got them and using it even more than me.Also they work
equally well with Ios and android.

Recently, I was travelling from Mumbai on the Express way and for the entire
journey I used my Frames to consume podcasts and calls. The experience was
superb.

Sometimes, on normal calls I do have an issue but it is very infrequent. Also,
the battery life is a serious letdown. It goes for maximum
210 minutes on asingle charge.

There is lots to write and like about Bose frames. However this is a niche
product and definitely not for everyone.

It totally depends upon the use case scenario. For someone interested only in
music, there are better headphones at this price point.

If my memory serves me right, Bose does offer a fourteen day or thirty day
return policy.I will highly recommend you to check on the return policy and
then accordingly make an informed decision.

Regards,
Aditya

Hello Access Indians,

I hope you all are doing great.

My name is Milan Mittal and currently I am working as a corporate law adviser

As the subject line indicates, my concern is regarding Bose Frame Bluetooth
Sunglasses. Recently, i had its demo and found it quite helpful, mainly while
delivering presentations. However, i doubt its durability and performance in
buzz.

Thus, If any group member is using them, I request them to share their
experience, mainly relating to its durability and performance, which may
further help me to decide whether to buy it or not.

I will wait to hear on this.

this in accessories.
As they are different architecture that is the reason separate release are made.

[AI] Unfortunate fraud issue

2020-01-27 Thread Harish Kumar P Kotian
All

An incident came to my notice when a blind girl was cheated bya fraudster by
which she lost close to Lakh of rupees.

She received a call on her mobile alleging that he was calling from Reserve
Bank and that her credit card got blocked. He got her to part with her CVV and
date of expiry of her card and also the OTP.
Within seconds thereafter there was a debit for that amount.

I am sharing this incident to prevent anyone else falling prey to it.
This is taken as a authorized transaction and there is no salvage except a
hope the perpetrar is caught and the money recovered.

While discussing this incident I was also told about an able bodied persons who
was well aware about online frauds and who was a faculty in a public sector
bank also got duped using social engineering tricks.
Therefore please exercise extreme caution while talking to people by phone
regarding any of your financial transaction.

Also be on a guard of the apps you installing on your mobile.

Regards
Harish

I resonate with the request and request all members to stop sending
congratulatory mails on the list. It should be directed to the person concerned.

It is very much in keeping with the list guidelines.
