[AI] This Device Lets Blind Women Take Pregnancy Tests in Privacy

2020-10-26 Thread Ronald Escrader
Hi Access Indians,

FYI:
RNIB has published the research methods and industrial design of its
prototype device in the hope that health-care corporations will take
notice.
A British charity has developed a prototype pregnancy test that
displays results by raising tactile silicone bumps, rather than
displaying text or lines on a screen.
How does the prototype pregnancy test differ from what is already on the market?
The Royal National Institute of Blind People, or RNIB, this week
introduced the reimagined urine-stick test, which features an
absorbent pad that is 50% larger than the average and a contrasting
yellow-and-pink color scheme to help the user distinguish between the
top and bottom of the device.
How does it work?
When urine is absorbed by the pad it triggers an internal motor to
raise the first tactile bump on the underside of the device. If
pregnancy hormones are detected, another set of bumps is raised on
top, indicating a positive result.
The device was developed to address not only blind women’s difficulty
in reading a test, but the lack of privacy afforded to them when they
take one, said RNIB chairwoman Eleanor Southwood. Women who are unable
to read the result of a test often have to ask their partner, friend
or neighbor to do so for them, meaning they are not the first to know
about their own pregnancy, she said.
And in some cases, women may not want their partners or family members
to know the outcome, Ms. Southwood added.
“One woman we spoke to had to ask someone to read her pregnancy test,
and when it came back negative they said, ‘Well, it’s probably for the
best, isn’t it?’” Ms. Southwood said. “That meant she was forced to
deal with the person’s response before the matter of her own
pregnancy.”
Who designed the prototype?
The test was devised by London-based designer Josh Wasserman, who met
with blind women in their homes as part of the design process. He
considered the idea of a test that conveyed the result through sound,
but rejected it after finding that women wanted an experience that
others couldn’t listen to—accidentally or on purpose, he said.
“There are a lot of people out there who are not hoping for a positive
result,” Mr. Wasserman said, “and it’s hard to create audio that isn’t
positive-sounding or negative-sounding. You don’t have that problem
with something that’s tactile.”
The pink-and-yellow design features an absorbent pad that is 50%
larger than the average.
The prototype is being tested by a small group of blind users.
RNIB has published the research methods and industrial design of the
device in the hope that health-care corporations will take notice of
the work, and either produce the prototype or build their own
accessible pregnancy tests, Ms. Southwood said.
Are there any other options that are available now?
Clearblue, a pregnancy-test brand produced by Swiss Precision
Diagnostics GmbH, in 2019 struck up a partnership with the Be My Eyes
app, which connects blind and low-vision people in need of assistance
with sighted volunteers through a live video call. Clearblue advisers
use the platform to field questions from blind people about taking a
pregnancy test, and understanding the result, said Sally Haworth,
community and careline manager at Clearblue.
Clearblue’s research and development team is now offering consulting
to RNIB free of charge to “find new ways to make pregnancy tests and
other medical devices totally accessible,” Ms. Haworth said.
Finding a company to mass-produce the RNIB test may prove difficult,
however. The limited customer base will mean production costs will
remain higher than for tests already on the market, Mr. Wasserman
said, adding that he remains hopeful that a manufacturer would pick up
the design nonetheless.
A better option might be to work with health-care companies to produce
a pregnancy test that can be used by both sighted and blind people,
Ms. Southwood said.
“If I needed to take a pregnancy test, I wouldn’t want to make a big
deal of it in the pharmacy and have to explain that I need a
particular type because I’m blind,” Ms. Southwood said. “The dream is
to buy any pregnancy test with the knowledge that it’s accessible.”

[AI] Foursquare Launches Location-Based Virtual Audio Guide for AirPods

2020-10-26 Thread Ronald Escrader
Hi Access Indians,
Tech Update:
Foursquare is releasing an audio-only virtual assistant platform
called Marsbot for AirPods that will play snippets into your earbuds
based on your location and let you record your own for others to hear.
The idea is to add an audio guide to wherever you happen to be. If you
walk in front of a restaurant, you might hear Marsbot recommend the
daily special, as described by the chef, or you might reach a scenic
view on a trail and hear congratulations from someone who was there
earlier.
What is Marsbot for AirPods?
Marsbot for AirPods acts as a kind of invisible tour guide, only
piping up when you walk into precise locations. When you have your
earbuds in and the app running in the background, Marsbot will share
information about a business, local art, or anything else put on the
platform. When stepping into the right spot, the app will share some
audio tied to that location. It could be spoken by the artificial
voice of Marsbot or by a user who recorded something to play for
others who go by.
“There’s an invisible X outside of the front door of [a location], and
the audio starts to play when you step into where we draw the X,”
Foursquare co-founder and chairman Dennis Crowley said. “We’re
designing for a world where people have one AirPod in all day long.
You unlock the content by walking around.”
Is Marsbot for AirPods available for both iPhone and Android? ?
Marsbot for AirPods is available as an iOS app and works with any
headphones or earbuds. It will even activate if the iPhone is
connected to a car and drives through the right spot. When you pass
the tagged spot, the app will lower the volume of any music playing in
the earbuds, and any podcast will pause until the clip is over. The
app won’t interrupt an audio or video phone call, however.
An Android version of the app is in the works for the near future.
Crowley said the app is on iOS first mainly because they didn’t have
an Android engineer to spare, and “for AirPods” sounded better to the
team than a more generic term.
What was the inspiration for Marsbot?
Marsbot refers to an earlier version of a similar idea except the
information was shared in text form; the decision to make it an audio
app was inspired by the very human-like voice assistant in the movie
Her, voiced by Scarlett Johansson. Crowley demonstrated an early
version of the app over a year ago at Betaworks, but the release was
delayed for a while this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Marsbot for AirPods last year focused heavily on cities and having
the audio provided by officials from businesses and organizations
spoken by the Marsbot voice. The version debuting takes that concept
and expands it beyond cities while giving people the option to record
their own voices to upload to the platform.
Foursquare has already added official audio snippets in ten U.S.
cities, but audio can be added to any location.
“We made tweaks, so it’s not so city-focused, but the content is still
tied to places you go,” Crowley said. “You could go on a hiking trail
and leave a piece of audio content, and someone walking there would
unlock it.”
Location-aware audio
Location-aware audio that activates without prompting from a user is
still an experimental idea. The proactive aspect of Marsbot sets it
apart from Siri, Alexa, or Google Assistant, though. Any voice
assistant can answer questions about a location, but none of them
alert you when you pass by it without being aware.
Right now, the emphasis is on making the audio interesting without
overwhelming users with too much information. As Crowley pointed out,
too many notifications from any app will make people turn off all
notifications or just delete the app. What people hear could include
historical trivia, an alert that someone you know who also uses the
app has been by recently, or even advertisements for nearby
businesses. That’s before considering what another person might choose
to record.
“Marsbot is the MC of the Foursquare ecosystem, but we decided to let
people record their own snippets too. It feels more like a content
platform than just an app,” Crowley said. “I have mixed expectations
for it. It could be a thousand or ten thousand people who get it, but
it’s meant to be an R project. It feels really new and interesting.”

[AI] Kellogg’s Makes Cereal Boxes Designed for the Blind with Inclusive Packaging

2020-10-21 Thread Ronald Escrader
Hi Access Indians,

FYI:
This cereal box features a UK-first technology that a smartphone
detects and reads aloud the labelling and allergen information to
people with sight loss.
The first-of-its-kind packaging was created in partnership with the
Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB), following research
that revealed that nine in 10 blind and partially sighted people feel
the info on food packaging is difficult or impossible to read.
The breakfast cereal company is rolling out boxes of Kellogg’s Coco
Pops in almost 60 Co-op stores across the UK that have been fitted
with a technology called NaviLens.
NaviLens is a printed code similar to a QR code, but in
high-contrasting colored squares on a black background that is
detected by a smartphone camera from up to 12 metres away when pointed
in the general direction of the cereal box, rather than the exact
position.
As users sweep the environment with a smartphone, audio cues allow
them to find and centre the tag in the phone’s field of view. A shake
of the wrist prompts a phone app to read aloud the ingredients,
allergen and recycling information on the box. Shoppers also have the
choice to read the info on the phone using accessibility tools.
This is the first time NaviLens has been used on food packaging or in
the UK. The technology is currently used across Barcelona, Madrid, and
Murcia city’s transport systems, making the cities easier to navigate
for thousands of visually impaired citizens.
If successful, the breakfast cereal giant hopes to adapt more of its
cereal boxes to include this technology.
The limited edition Coco Pops cereal boxes are also embossed with
braille and the on-pack information is in a larger font size.
“Over two million people in the UK live with sight loss and are unable
to simply read the information on our cereal boxes. That’s why we
partnered with RNIB to trial special boxes of Coco Pops with NaviLens
technology, a first for food packaging,” said Chris Silcock,
Kellogg’s MD.
Marc Powell, strategic accessibility lead at RNIB, added, “Important
information on packaging can often be in very small print, making it
difficult for blind and partially sighted people to read,”
“This can make shopping a real challenge, especially for those with
specific dietary requirements – as they can’t see the all-important
nutritional information.”
“This trial with Kellogg’s using NaviLens technology has raised the
bar in inclusive and accessible packaging design – allowing people
with low or no vision to locate a product on the shelf and access all
information about it completely independently for the very first
time.”

Re: [AI] Police develop new system to identify officers at your door

2020-10-09 Thread Ronald Escrader
Hi Anirudh,

I completely agree with you on this.

And I really think that our stake holders must come forward and take
up this issue with our state and centeral government. Organizations
like NAB Delhi, Eyeway, NFB, AICB, Mitra Jyoti, Enable India, Blind
People Association, Blind Relief Association "BRA" "BGFI"and many
more reputed organizations must come forward not only to take up this
issue but to take up other issues right in front of the government
like accessibility issues, travelling issues, education issues and
other basic necessary needs of visually impaired which will benefit
our community on a large scale. I personally think that only one
person raising his/ her voice for any one of the above mentioned issue
will not help the community, as a whole we all must contribute our
bit so that all of us can benefit from it and specially the stake
holders must come forward willingly as I have already mentioned above.

Please note I am not targeting any of the stake holders on personal
grounds I am bringing this up to the community what I think and how
can we all benefit from this.

Instead of every day bringing up one or the other issue we must take
one issue at a time and get it resolved permanently with patience &
then take up the other issue because taking up multiple issue at the
same time may not benefit in any way.

I have noticed since past decade there is no unity with in the
"Visually Impaired"community. This is my observation, it may differ
although. But when I see the "Deaf/ Hearing Impaired"communit", the
unity they have among themselves that kind of unity our community
doesn't have.

And that is the main problem in our community because of which nune of
us are able to come on the same page. My only request to all the
"VI"community please come together as one under one roof in unity and
fight for your and our community's basic rights so that we are also
able to avail benefit the services like the other visually impaired
are able to avail and enjoy in foreign countries like ÜSA, Canada, &
European" countries.

And doing so we all need to keep our own personal ego's , our envities
and other selfish thoughts and needs a side. Then only we'll be able
to move a head and get our basic fundamental rights. Whether it is our
work place, at home, between friends, at school/ colleges, while
travelling, while shopping, while making an online or off line
transactions, or in any other form. I say if any one needs, I am
willing to step forward and willing to contribute my bit for my
community in which ever way or in which ever form I can do. But I also
urge you all on an individual level, to step up forward and contribute
from your end towards our community in which ever & in what ever
capacity.
Last but not the least the stake holders must take their lead in this
must be in role model faction.

I aapologize if I have knowingly or unknowingly hurt anyone's feelings
or emotions. I never intended to do that. But if I have, I humbly
urge for forgiveness. But this is my stand on this and I will& I stand
by the statements I have made in this email.

[AI] Police develop new system to identify officers at your door

2020-10-06 Thread Ronald Escrader
Hi Access Indians,
FYI:

Thames Valley Police recently launched the Visual Impairment Protocol
(VIP). It applies to anyone who is blind or visually impaired. It can
also be used by anyone who cares for, or supports, someone who is
visually impaired.

Normally, when officers go to someone’s home, they have an
identification card which can be shown to prove who they are. However,
it isn’t as easy for visually impaired people who may not be able to
see a photograph or name on an identification card clearly.

The VIP will be in place across the Thames Valley and Hampshire police
areas. It works by setting up a password system at the address of a
visually impaired person. When someone calls either 101 or 999 and
tells the emergency dispatcher that they have vision loss, a password
of their choice will be agreed between the caller and the dispatcher.
Then when an officer visits that address, they will be expected to
state the password to the person answering the door. If they cannot
give the password, then they should not be allowed into the address.

Thames Valley Police has urged people who care for someone who has a
visual impairment, or have any friends and family with such a
condition, to make them aware of the new password system.

[AI] Headphone Accommodations Help You Hear Better

2020-10-06 Thread Ronald Escrader
Hi Access Indians,

In the “Audio/Visual” accessibility setting, there’s a new option
called “Headphone Accommodations.” When you toggle this on, you get a
chance to fine-tune how you hear things in your headphones. And if you
have a set of AirPods Pro, it works in conjunction with Transparency
mode.

You can change the audio from a balanced tone to one optimized for
higher frequency sounds or vocals in the middle frequencies. There’s
also a slider to adjust how soft sounds are boosted, from slight to
moderate to strong. And you can hear these changes as you make them in
real-time using the “Play Sample” button. Best of all, you can choose
to have these settings apply to media (music, movies, podcasts, etc.)
or phone calls or both.

If you own a pair of AirPods, AirPods Pro, or Beats, there’s another
option for Headphone Accommodations that lets you create a “Custom
Audio Setup.” It will walk you through different sounds

One of the best features of Headphone Accommodations is available to
select Airpods and Beats headphones. When connected, you can create a
custom audio setup that best suits your hearing. AirPods Pro also
supports Transparency mode, which improves the audibility of quieter
voice around you

[AI] How to turn on the Handwashing Timer on Apple Watch in watchOS 7

2020-09-29 Thread Ronald Escrader
Hi Access Indians,

How to turn on the Handwashing Timer on Apple Watch in watchOS 7

Enable automatic Handwashing Timer feature in Apple Watch running watchOS 7

Want to enable the new Handwashing Timer feature on your Apple Watch?
Here’s how you do it in a few easy steps.

Apple realizes the important of washing hands and has baked in a
automatic timer with the new watchOS 7 update which activates when you
are washing your hands. Called Handwashing Timer, when enabled, it
will count down to 20 seconds and will ping you once the timer is up,
telling you that you have washed your hands properly. You have to wash
your hands for 20 seconds in order to kill any germs or viruses that
you may have on your hand. Obviously, the washing technique matters,
and the Apple Watch won’t help you in that, but 20 seconds is what you
should aim for and watchOS 7 will encourage you.

The feature is disabled by default, but we will show you how to enable
it and you can test it out for yourself.

Note: This feature requires watchOS 7 running on the Apple Watch
Series 5, Series 4 and Series 3. The newly announced Series 6 and SE
models already have the update preinstalled.
1.Press the Digital Crown to view your grid of apps.
2.Find the Settings app and select it.
3.Scroll down and find Handwashing.
4.Turn the feature on by tapping on Handwashing Timer.
5.Now simply wash your hands and you will see the timer kick into
action, it’s as simple as 1,2,3,4,5.

[AI] Tech News: Is Apple Developing Braille for a Watch Band?

2020-09-29 Thread Ronald Escrader
Hi Access Indians,

Is Apple Developing Braille for a Watch Band?
With the onset of Apple to deliver Apple Watch 6, a technique
containing patent has been granted to Apple. The patent includes
techniques for delivering information to a user devoid of audio or
visual outputs. Tactile outputs are being used by the watch band to
convey notification to a user.
Initially, the user is expected to experience a haptic event on their
wrist. This haptic event is then expected to be followed by a symbol
or braille or both. The symbol or the braille is formed on the band of
the watch in real-time. It is designed to allow the user to feel and
know what the message is about.
The design is especially expected to help blind and visually impaired
people. The special design also assured the proper delivery of the
message in real-time even if audio or visual outputs are wrong. The
specially designed watch will enable the user to be reminded off of
the important event, appointment, or meeting even if the alarm is
turned off due to any reason. It will notify the user by forming a
tactile symbol or haptic event.
The band of this upcoming Apple watch is made up of a computing
component and a band is coupled to this computing component. An inner
surface for contacting the outer surface opposite the inner surface as
well as the tactile output mechanism is present in the band. These are
designed to selectively form as well as omit tactile symbols.
A mechanism for delivering tactile output through a band of a wearable
electronic system involves receiving information from a computer
component coupled to the band on a band including actuators programmed
to selectively shape deformations along a banded surface and in
response to receiving the information, causing a set of actuators to
shape a pattern of deformations along the surface.
As claimed by Apple, paraffin wax or other material having the similar
characteristics of changing phase at a comparatively lower temperature
can be used to make actuation material. The company further adds that
a gas or any liquid which have the characteristic of expanding or
contracting accordingly with the change in temperature can be used.
Apple further adds that the thermal actuators can be used wisely to
produce tactile symbols with the help of hot, cold or both regions
along the surface of a band. Similar to the protrusion, the hot and
cold region may be utilized in the same way. To be precise, it can be
assumed that they might as well be able to function as a tactile
output mechanism. A patch of hot or cold (or both) region may be
useful to form braille or other informative characters. The user then,
just by touching with a finger, can sense the characters formed.
Band’s actuators of the wearable item can also at times refrain from
producing protrusion and can form a depression instead. To convey
time, regions of heat/cold/both may be generated along an inner
surface of the band. Apart from conveying time, it will help the user
to remember a certain event or measure the progress of a certain task.
While a future Apple Watch is likely the target device for this
invention, Apple notes that other wearables could be targeted in the
future such as a ring, glasses, gloves, a lanyard, belt, strap,
connector, and the like. Apple’s granted patent was originally filed
in Q3 2016 and published September 16, 2020 by the US Patent and
Trademark Office.

[AI] Guide Dogs for the Blind announces new partnership with app that

2020-09-21 Thread Ronald Escrader
Hi Access Indians,

Guide Dogs for the Blind (GDB) partners with Be My Eyes to give
real-time video assistance to individuals who are blind or visually
impaired.

As of September 14, 2020, GDB support staff will field calls via the
“Specialized Help” section of the app, allowing GDB experts to
remotely help clients who are visually impaired with relevant issues
regarding their guide dogs or other situations that might require live
visual assistance.
Such assistance could include reading labels on their dog’s food or
medication packaging, addressing problems with harnesses, inspecting a
dog’s physical condition, or helping interact with GDB’s website.
Clients can ask questions Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. through 4
p.m. PST. For questions not requiring GDB staff expertise, users can
simply tap the “Call the First Volunteer” button on the app to get
answers and assistance.
As many people who are blind or visually impaired have struggled with
social isolation and reduced support networks from COVID-19, GDB has
added many services to its clients to help them during the Pandemic,
including town halls and providing video chat and other online support
services to its more than 2,100 guide dog teams across the U.S. and
Canada. Its partnership with Be My Eyes complements these efforts by
helping alumni overcome everyday barriers to provide the absolute best
care for their guide dogs.
GDB, which is the largest guide dog school in North America, joins
companies such as Google, Microsoft and Proctor & Gamble as
organizational supporters of the blindness community via Be My Eyes.
The app is free and available for download via Google Play or the
Apple App Store
About Guide Dogs for the Blind
Headquartered in San Rafael, California, Guide Dogs for the Blind is
more than an industry-leading guide dog school; it is a passionate
community that serves the visually impaired. GDB prepares highly
qualified guide dogs to serve and empower individuals who are blind or
visually impaired. All of its services are provided free of charge.

[AI] What do the orange and green dots mean in iOS 14?

2020-09-21 Thread Ronald Escrader
Hi Access Indians,

FYI
What do the orange and green dots mean in iOS 14?
Following the new iOS 14 software update, which was rolled out to
Apple products including iPhones and iPads around the world on
Wednesday, September 16, many users have been quick to noticed new
indicators in the status bar, in the right-hand notch, and are
wondering what those are for.
These new status symbols show up as orange and green dots or circles
that appear above the signal strength indicator.
It turns out these dots are actually informational indicators that
help reassure and protect your privacy. On MacBooks and iMacs, Apple
has a physical green LED that sits next to the webcam. Although they
appear next to the cellular signal and Wi-Fi status indicators, they
have nothing to do with network connectivity.
When the camera is accessed, the LED light turns on to let you know
that an application on your system is watching the camera feed.
iPhones and iPad do not have physical LEDs so Apple has simulated the
experience through software.
What does the orange dot on iPhone mean?
The orange dot means that an application on your phone is using the
microphone. The microphone is being listened to and could be recorded.
This may show up when you are using Siri or Dictation, for example,
and need the iPhone to transcribe your speech to text. The orange dot
should only appear when you are doing something that requires the
microphone.
If the orange dot shows in contexts where it doesn’t seem like it
should be required, that may indicate an app is misusing your privacy.
If you do spot it showing up when it shouldn’t, then you may want to
contact the developer to enquire about why it is being used. It could
just be a bug with the app, rather than intentional spying activity.
In previous versions of iOS, users would not know when the microphone
was being accessed unless the app was in the background. When apps
record the microphone when backgrounded, iOS shows a red pill
indicator on the left-hand side of the notch. This behavior hasn’t
changed with iOS 14, but now the orange light will appear on the
right-hand side of the notch at the same time.
What does the green dot on iPhone mean?
The green dot appears when an app is using the camera, like when
taking a photo. Camera access implies access to the microphone too; in
this case, you won’t see the orange dot separately. The green color
matches the LEDs used in Apple’s MacBook and iMac products.
If an application is accessing the camera when it doesn’t make sense,
it may mean the app is invading your privacy. They may be doing
something nefarious, in which case you can delete the application, or
it may just be a bug.
The green light being on does not mean that the camera feed is being
recorded and saved; all iOS knows is that the app can access the
camera feed at that time. It doesn’t know what the app is doing with
the data.
If you pull down on the Control Center, within a few minutes of the
camera or microphone being used, Control Center UI can tell you what
happened. It will show the type of access (either microphone or
camera) and the name of the app that used the sensor. This provides an
extra layer of transparency, in case you happened to miss the small
circular dot indicator.
What else has changed as a result of the iOS 14
update?
Following the roll out of the new iOS 14 software on iPhones and
iPads, Apple users will now be able to continue watching videos or
FaceTime call others while using another app.
Here’s a round-up from Apple of the other features
that have launched on iOS 14:
Translate is designed to be the best and easiest app for translating
conversations, offering quick and natural translation of voice and
text among 11 different languages.6 On-device mode allows users to
experience the features of the app offline for private voice and text
translation.
Siri expands its knowledge and answers complex questions with
information sourced from across the internet. Keyboard dictation runs
on device when dictating messages, notes, email, and more.
The Home app makes smart home control even easier with new automation
suggestions and expanded controls in Control Center for quicker access
to accessories and scenes. Adaptive Lighting for compatible
HomeKit-enabled lights automatically adjusts the colour temperature
throughout the day, and Face Recognition in compatible video doorbells
and cameras uses on-device intelligence from Apple TV or HomePod to
identify visitors. The Home app and HomeKit are built to be private
and secure, so all information about a user’s home accessories is
end-to-end encrypted.
Digital versions of car keys give users a secure way to use iPhone to
unlock and start their car. Car keys can be easily shared using
Messages, or disabled through iCloud if a device is lost, and are
available today for compatible cars using NFC technology.8
Safari offers a Privacy Report so users can easily see which
cross-site trackers have been blocked, secure password

formatting, the box is available or not and many more things as screen

[AI] Google Lookout Updates App with Food Labeling and Scanning Documents

2020-08-16 Thread Ronald Escrader
Hi Access Indians,

Google Lookout Updates App with Food Labeling and Scanning Documents

Google Lookout, the accessibility app that aids the blind and visually
impaired identify objects through the use of their phone camera, has
been upgraded
with some new features and improvements.

Google Lookout, the accessibility app that aids the blind and visually
impaired identify objects through the use of their phone camera, has
been upgraded
with some new features and improvements. Originally released in 2019
in the US for Pixel phones, Google Lookout was created to help those
with vision loss
navigate the world through the use of AI. When pointed at objects or
animals, it would attempt to identify them.

The new update brings with it two notable features: Food Label and
Scan Document.

“With Food Label, you can quickly identify packaged foods by pointing
your phone’s camera at the label,” a
Google blog post explains.
“Lookout will guide you to position the food product so that it can
be properly identified through its packaging or barcode. This can be
particularly
helpful if you’re putting away groceries and want to make sure you’re
handling the right items that might feel the same to the touch. For
example, Food
Label would be able to distinguish between a can of corn and a can of
green beans.”

Note, however, that Food Label isn’t available in all countries yet,
and is still in Beta.

The other new feature, Scan Document, makes it easier to go through
letters and mail, the blog post explains. By taking a snapshot of a
document, the in-app
AI will then attempt to recognize and read the whole text for you.

Based on feedback from the blind and low-vision community, Google is
also introducing an accessible design that is even more compatible
with TalkBack,
Android’s screen reader. This includes making more space for the
camera view, which makes it easier to frame the object in question. In
addition, navigation
between modes has been made to require fewer taps and less time by
making it possible to scroll between them at the bottom of the screen.

originally, the app launched with 3 features.

One of those is Quick Read, which is a more streamlined version of
Scan Document meant for shorter pieces of text such as mail.

Another existing feature is Currency mode, which identifies banknotes
and their value. This currently works on USD only, however.

Explore mode describes the user’s surroundings, including objects and text.

Google recommends the visually impaired and blind to hang their phone
from a lanyard around their neck or placing it in a shirt front
pocket.

[AI] How to Turn Off COVID-19 Exposure Notifications in iOS

2020-05-04 Thread Ronald Escrader
Hi Access Indians,

How to Turn Off COVID-19 Exposure Notifications in iOS

Apple recently introduced its first version of exposure notification
API. The API has been designed to allow apps developed by public
health authorities to notify users who come into contact with COVID-19
victims. The Exposure Notification will let a user know if they have
been exposed to the virus. The beta was recently released and if you
have installed the latest beta on your iPhone or iPad, you can make
use of the feature right now.

How you can toggle off Exposure Notifications in iOS 13.5.
If you’re concerned about privacy, Apple says there is no personally
identifiable information that will be shared with the public health
authorities including location data. Since the exposure notification
feature is enabled by default, you can always opt-out of it once you
have upgraded to iOS 13.5, but you can disable Exposure Notifications
in Settings.

First launch the Settings app.

Scroll down and select Privacy

Select Health.

Select COVID-19 Exposure Notifications and toggle it Off.

According to Apple, the purpose of adding this feature is to limit the
spread of COVID-19. It will notify users who have been exposed to the
virus so they can isolate themselves from the world. They will also
get recommendations from local health authorities.

If you wish to re-enable Exposure Notifications on iOS 13.5, follow
the same steps as listed above and toggle it back on. iOS 13.5 is
available as a beta currently and will be rolled out to users in the
coming weeks. The beta also brings bug fixes and performance
enhancements.

In order to receive Exposure Notifications, you also have to download
a dedicated app from the public health authority that makes use of the
API. If you have the toggle enabled but don’t have the app installed,
you will not receive any Exposure Notifications

[AI] How to Make Your iPhone Text Size Larger & Easier to Read

2020-04-27 Thread Ronald Escrader
Hi Access Indians,

How to Make Your iPhone Text Size Larger & Easier to Read

How Do I Make the Text Bigger on My iPhone?
If you’d like to change the font size on your iPhone to make the
default iPhone letters bigger or smaller, it’s an easy process.
Although not every app supports
Dynamic Type (the setting that tells apps to adjust the text size),
many do. To increase text size on your iPhone:

Open the Settings app.
Select Display & Brightness.
Select Text Size.
Adjust the slider to the right until you reach your preferred text size.

How to Change Your iPhone Text Size with Accessibility Settings

If the text size is still not big enough, you can make the text even
bigger with your iPhone Accessibility settings. To access these
features:

Open the Settings app.
Select Accessibility.
Select Display & Text Size.
Select Larger Text.
A slider with even bigger text options will appear. Drag it to the
right until you reach your desired text size.

How to Turn On Bold Text on Your iPhone

If changing the font size hasn’t made your iPhone text legible enough,
there’s one more iPhone setting to try. You can bold the text on your
iPhone:

In the Display & Text Size menu of your Accessibility settings, toggle
Bold Text on.

[AI] Twitter Web App Gets New Accessibility Improvements

2020-04-26 Thread Ronald Escrader
Hi Access Indians,

Twitter Web App Gets New Accessibility Improvements

Twitter adds accessibility features to its progressive web app (PWA).

The April list of updates was released, and it includes a fair amount
of improvements. The Twitter PWA is the default experience on web
browsers these
days, as well as on the Windows 10 app and Chrome OS.

Behavior and features

Twitter is improving the UI for managing multiple Twitter accounts, a
feature that was added back in June of last year. Direct Message
reactions, a recent
addition to the PWA, are also now displayed as selected under the
respective message. For accessibility, focus rings around selected
components will now
use the chosen primary color.

The updates also include a long list of updated behavior for existing
features in the app. Accessibility seems to be a focus in the latest
changelog, with
improvements to screen readers and VoiceOver features:

Accessibility:

The GIF search gallery now provides accessibility labels for GIFs
returned by searching. These labels will be read out by screen
readers, providing additional
context for search results.

Accessibility:

Improved accessibility in poll components. Voiceover will now read the
selected choice properly. Fixed text color when in high contrast mode.

Composer:

Inline feedback errors when composing will now provide a “Learn more”
link if there’s additional information.

Keyboard Shortcuts:

Improved KB shortcuts for screen accessibility.

Timeline:

We’ve made some density and visibility improvements to timeline surfaces.

User Profile:

When your date of birth is set to be visible to “only you,” it will no
longer show up when you navigate to your own profile page.

Finally, there’s a pretty significant list of fixes made to various
parts of the experience, including zooming improvements on touch
devices and more:

Accessibility:

When a Tweet is focused, the “U” keyboard shortcut will mute the Tweet.

Composer:

Moving your cursor off a username or hashtag will now properly close
the typeahead or autocomplete dropdown if it was open.

Composer:

Videos added to the composer which generate an error state will now
properly clear the banner when removed.

Dialogs:

Confirmation dialogs will now consistently show titles and text.

DMs:

Reaction summary sheet will now properly render at lower resolutions.

Home Timeline:

The inline composer on the home timeline will now display in both

[AI] Researchers Demonstrate Alternative to Stem Cells Thanks To New Method of Synthesizing

2020-04-26 Thread Ronald Escrader
Hi Access Indians,

Researchers Demonstrate Alternative to Stem Cells Thanks To New Method
of Synthesizing

Age-related macular degeneration (MD) is a variety of ocular disease
that affects so many millions of people, it’s downright characterized
as nothing more
than the process of aging.

In fact, the study of MD has proven itself to be so fruitful for
understanding aging as a whole, MD has become one of the first places
that scientists
have looked to in order to attempt to repair the damage of aging and
restoring youthful, or normal function.

Now in a new paper published in
Nature,
researchers demonstrate an alternative to stem cells by creating
replacement photoreceptors from skin fibroblast cells via
pharmacological-conversion—a
process that promises to be cheaper, faster, and unburdened by ethical
and legal restrictions.

Containing the genetic code for every protein we need to build and
repair our cells, DNA can become damaged over time through the
stresses of life. Similarly
to how scratches or cracks in a CD prevent lasers from reading the
information on the disk, damaged DNA becomes difficult, and even
impossible for our
RNA (which you could imagine as the laser inside the CD player) to
read the genetic information contained therein.

“The photoreceptor is the neuron in the eye that turns on visual
circuity in response to light which enables us to have vision,” says
Sai Chavala, Ph.D.
and author of the new paper.

The loss of photoreceptors can result in MD and other retinal diseases
that lead to irreversible blindness. In this new study, however, cells
called fibroblasts
can be chemically reprogrammed to produce photoreceptor-like cells
that are now shown to restore vision in mice.

Fibroblasts are cells that help maintain the structural integrity of
connective tissues, and a reduction in fibroblast cell count leads to
wrinkled skin.

Sai Chavala and colleagues from the Center for Retina Innovation in
Dallas, Texas, found a set of five compounds that can drive embryonic
fibroblast cells
to convert themselves into retinal, rod-like, photoreceptors in both
mice and human cells.

“Stem cell-based strategies are extremely exciting,” Dr. Chavala tells
World at Large,
but adds that generating these cells can be cumbersome and
time-consuming. Describing his strategy of chemically reprogramming
existing cells as a ‘breakthrough,’
Chavala added that the generation of the photoreceptors using his
method requires “a fraction of the time”.

In the study, these converted photoreceptors were transplanted into
the eyes of 14 blind mice to see if they would restore vision.

Owing to their nature, mice with working vision prefer dark spaces,
and so a test of whether or not the transplant was a success was
fairly straight forward;
create a bright space and a dark space and wait to see which one was
preferred by the mice.

Six mice were found to not only have restored visual function and
reflexes—notably in the pupil—but they also preferred to spend their
time in the dark
space. Chavala hypothesizes that it could have been down to how many
of the chemically reprogrammed cells survived the transplant into the
retina that
determined whether vision was restored in the mice or not.

What makes interventions like these—which involve creating brand new
cells to replace the damaged ones—so effective and exciting in the
field of aging
is that they present an alternative to natural replication by
bypassing the difficulties that our own cells have with trying to
repair themselves from
DNA that features double-strand breaks or other blemishes.

Reasons to be hopeful

Adding that these conversions of fibroblasts to photoreceptors has
also been done in humans, Chavala detailed why he believes the
treatments and future
research to spring from this discovery are going to change the field
of ophthalmology.

“ We believe this can be a game changer in the field of regenerative
ophthalmology. We also believe this is a platform technology and have
already started
establishing protocols to generate retinal ganglion cells valuable for
patients suffering from glaucoma,” says Chavala.

In addition to bypassing the ethical and political restrictions and
hiccups with using embryonic human stem cells, the process takes two
weeks, costs less,
and is more scalable than using stem cells.

“It is intriguing to postulate that the addition of other molecules or
modifications to the culture conditions can yield other types of
neurons beneficial
for a variety of neurological diseases,” he adds, discussing possible
alternatives to photoreceptor generation from fibroblasts.

Chavala is rapidly approaching human trials and hopes to have an
FDA-approved treatment out the other end of the pipeline in 2-3 years,
saying he is “thrilled”
with the possibility of allowing millions of people to regain their lost vision.

[AI] Supersense is the smartest and simplest scanner app made for the blind and visually impaired users to read any text format independently.

2020-04-22 Thread Ronald Escrader
Hi Access Indians,

Supersense AI is a Smart Scanner for the Blind

Supersense is the smartest and simplest scanner app made for the blind
and visually impaired users to read any text format independently.

With the power of AI, Supersense automatically figures out what you
are trying to scan, guides you on how to point the camera, and reads
the content in
the right format. Its unique design minimizes the time and
frustrations of scanning and reading text for a blind and visually
impaired user.

Full features of Supersense:

– Smart Scanner: The app looks at the text you are trying to read and
the AI figures out whether it is a short text, a book, a currency, or
something else
– Smart Guidance: The app guides you on how to point the camera and
finds the best angle to have the most accurate results
– Read all sorts of texts: documents, mails, books, currencies or handwriting
– Import: Read and explore text from the photos in your camera roll.
Also you can send them directly from any other apps with using
“Supersense Image”
tool in your share menu.

Most features work without an internet connection so that the blind or
visually impaired user can use it in any situation. The app has full
VoiceOver accessibility
support and is available in multiple languages.

[AI] Nintendo Switch Update Adds Accessibility Feature

2020-04-22 Thread Ronald Escrader
Hi Access Indians,

Nintendo Switch Update Adds Accessibility Feature

Nintendo has given players the ability to change the button layout of
Joy-Cons and Pro Controllers. In the latest update

The newest Switch update, 10.0.0, brought a ton of great features to
the console, including the ability to transfer downloaded content back
and forth between
the system memory and a removable SD card. More importantly, though,
Nintendo has given players the ability to change the button layout of
Joy-Cons and
Pro Controllers. This is a useful feature for players that may have
trouble using the controllers as intended, and will undoubtedly open
the doors for
many people to play games they otherwise would have never been able to.

Even though some games allow button remapping, not all of them do, and
a system-wide feature like this means that players can create a layout
that works
best for them and then use it for every game they play. The Switch
update will allow players to create up to 5 unique layouts for each
Joy-Con and/or Pro
Controller they use, so whether you share your Switch or just need
layouts for different games, there should be enough profiles
available.

The interface for remapping the buttons is simple to use. From the
System Settings menu scroll down the list until you see Controllers
and Sensors. From
there, the second option is Change Button Mapping. On this menu,
select the Joy-Con or Pro Controller you want to edit, select change,
and select the button,
trigger, or control stick you wish to change.

Every button is an option, including the buttons from the opposite
Joy-Con. You can even disable any button if you need to. You can then
save your layout
and edit it anytime. If you have a layout saved to the SD card, you
can load it in and save the time it would take to recreate it.

[AI] DOOM Eternal Comes with Accessibility Options

2020-04-22 Thread Ronald Escrader
Hi Access Indians,

DOOM Eternal Comes with Accessibility Options
The release of DOOM Eternal has been a success with its range of
deliberate design choices for greater accessibility.
Throughout the Settings options players are presented with various
Accessibility options across multiple tabs. For example, a Colorblind
option can be
found in the tabs for UI, Video, Accessibility, and elsewhere all with
different functions. For the rendering options, players can select
None (default),
Protanopia, Tritanopia, or Deuteranopia. Color Vision Deficiency, or
CVD, affects roughly 1 in 12 men.
There are many more options to choose from. Controller Layout is
another point for consideration, with several common layouts offered,
but also the ability
to custom map a controller as one sees fit. For people with limited
mobility and who find the usage of traditional controllers too
difficult, this is ideal.
The example mentioned earlier of the custom controller takes this
approach to heart as well.
Another set of options for accessibility comes in the form of player
perspective in game. Both the Field of View and Motion Blur can be
adjusted, which
perfect for players who get motion sickness from playing with rigid
settings that cannot be adjusted.

When looking at everything that DOOM Eternal offers by default, it can
be jarring to go back to other games that offer little or no options
for increasing
Accessibility.
Moving forward, it should be the industry norm to make games with a
focus on Accessibility, especially for the larger developers who both
have the infrastructure
and resources to create such tools and should be industry leaders.
Although DOOM Eternal does a great job at creating an inclusive game
for all types of
players, it is an exception to the rule, and not the norm.

[AI] braille Displays Could be Improved with New Electrically Activated Material

2020-04-22 Thread Ronald Escrader
braille Displays Could be Improved with New Electrically Activated Material

Researchers report an improved material that could take braille
displays to the next level at a lower cost.

Refreshable braille displays translate information from computer
screens into raised characters, often along the bottom of a keyboard.
But this technology
can cost thousands of dollars and is limited, typically displaying a
string of characters much shorter than most sentences. Researchers now
report an improved
material that could take these displays to the next level, allowing
those who are blind or who have low vision to more easily understand
text and images,
while lowering cost.

The researchers are presenting their results through the American
Chemical Society (ACS) SciMeetings online platform.

“With more development, we think this new material’s properties could
make it possible to create much higher resolution devices, perhaps
even those capable
of displaying information other than text, such as diagrams or maps,”
says Julia R. Greer, Ph.D., the project’s principal investigator.

Braille displays currently on the market rely on the piezoelectric
effect: A small crystal expands when voltage is applied to it, pushing
a pin upward
to create a dot. A single character, such as a letter, is encoded by
up to eight such dots. Devices on the market typically display at most
80 characters
at a time, or a fraction of a sentence or tweet.

Researchers have recently turned their attention to electroactive
polymers (EAPs) as a type of material that could improve these
displays. EAPs could display
much more information than conventional devices, as well as a greater
diversity of it. What’s more, the devices could be easier and cheaper
to manufacture.
That promise has yet to materialize, however, and EAP-based displays
have encountered many issues, including the need for high voltage to
operate and poor
durability.

Greer’s team at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech)
conceived of an entirely new type of EAP based on polyionic complexes,
and in the summer
of 2019, the group began working on a way to synthesize the material.
An improved EAP could help braille technology catch up to that used by
those with
sight, says Rob Learsch, who was a graduate student in the lab at the
time. “Braille technology hasn’t changed much since the 1980s,” he
notes. “I think
it would be remarkable to allow everyone to benefit from the
revolution in miniaturization and computation that has occurred.”

Whereas conventional EAPs rely on electrical charge accumulating on
electrodes, the new material contains positively and negatively
charged polymers combined
into a random network of chains connected at nodes. The negatively
charged polymers form a solid scaffold to which the positive ones
bind, acting like
rubber bands that pull everything together. Applying an electrical
field unravels these connections, as if cutting the rubber bands, and
causes the material
to expand outward. The polyionic EAP requires much less voltage, and
is more efficient and resilient, than conventional EAPs.

Learsch has since joined the lab of Julia Kornfield, Ph.D., at
Caltech, where he and others are continuing to study the material’s
properties and develop
it to the point where it can be used within braille displays and,
perhaps, offer new functionality for these devices. Because the
material can act like
a capacitor, generating an electrical signal when pressure is applied,
it could be used to build braille displays that respond to touch, much
like the
screen of a smart phone or tablet.
The material also could be used for other applications. If controlled
by precise electrical fields, Learsch says he could foresee it opening
and closing
a robotic joint or gripper. “There is a lot of research to be done to
get us from where we are now to these types of products, but that is
all part of
our long-term vision,” Learsch says.

Blackboard Launches Free Accessibility Tool that Converts Digital
Course Content Into Accessible Formats

Blackboard Inc. announced the launch of the
File Transformer,
Powered by Blackboard Ally — a free resource enabling students to
convert their digital course content into a range of alternative
formats to meet their
unique learning needs and preferences as they adjust to digital
teaching and learning modalities.

The new resource allows students to personalize their learning
experience and choose from several different format types designed to
work better with mobile
devices, assistive technologies, and study tools. The temporary, free
resource is designed to ease students’ transition to digital learning
as K12 school
districts and higher education institutions continue moving to fully
remote learning environments over the next several weeks as a result
of COVID-19 contingency
planning.

The File Transformer is an extension of Blackboard Ally, a solution
that helps improve the accessibility of course content and uses
machine learning algorithms
to generate alternative formats of digital content for students. While
Blackboard Ally integrates seamlessly into leading Learning Management
System (LMS)
solutions, the File Transformer is temporarily available to anyone and
can be accessed outside of the LMS via web URL. Students can simply
upload a digital
file from their courses and select their desired file format,
including mobile-friendly HTML, audio MP3, ePub, electronic Braille,

[AI] Facebook Launching Accessibility Tools Making Live-Streaming Available to More People

2020-04-12 Thread Ronald Escrader
Hi All,

Facebook Launching Accessibility Tools Making Live-Streaming Available
to More People

Facebook says it’s going to launch various features over the next
couple weeks to make Facebook Live more accessible and easy to use,
particularly for
people who might not have a lot of mobile data.

The team is launching an audio-only mode, as well as automatic closed
captions great for people with vision loss and hearing loss. It’s also
giving people
various ways to access a stream outside of Facebook, including
logged-out support, which means people without a Facebook account can
still tune into content.
This accompanies Public Switched Telephone Network support, allowing
streamers to generate toll-free telephone numbers so viewers can call
into the audio
of a live broadcast.

Other new features are more directed toward the people hosting live
events. The company’s Stars function, which allows creators to make
money over streams,
is expanding to musicians and cultural institutions. Up until now,
it’s mostly been used by gamers. The expansion is clearly a nod to
other streaming platforms,
like Twitch, where artists have been hosting live, donation-based streams.

Additionally, Facebook is providing partners, mostly faith-based and
education organizations, with mobile phone accessories to help them go
live. It’s
also launching a “live producer” feature for more professional setups
that require a connected camera and software encoder. The company says
this feature
will make managing live streams easier and includes tools like comment
moderation, overlays, and clipping.

Hi There,

Love playing games, then check it out:-

Moving Out is Coming with Accessibility Options and Assist Mode on April 28

Moving Out, the co-operative couch carrying game from Team17, is
expected to arrive at the end of the month on a variety of consoles.
Before the April
28 release date, though, a new trailer has been dropped that shows off
a variety of incredibly thoughtful accessibility options included in
the game, alongside
a helpful and easy to grasp Assist Mode. Check it out below.

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-pYdpQSasQvmocEDWZUotQ

Accessibility options in video games are important, and Moving Out has
incorporated them. Players can use the Scalable UI to adjust the size
and positioning
of HUD elements dynamically, and a Dyslexic Friendly Text mode swaps
the default font of the game with a clearer and less stylized set of
fonts. There
are also full subtitle options for all in-game speech. Keyboard
controls can be fully remapped as you see fit, and there are a variety
of preset controller
profiles available including left-handed and right-handed only configurations.

If you want more gameplay-related assist features in Moving Out,
you’ll want to use the Assist Mode. Toggling this adds a bevy of
helpful gameplay adjustments
that can make the experience much smoother, from increased time limits
and lighter items to less difficult level layouts and level-skip
features.

Moving Out is set to launch on April 28 for PlayStation 4, Nintendo
Switch, Xbox One, and PC.

[AI] Google Finally Launches Braille Keyboard for Android Devices

2020-04-12 Thread Ronald Escrader
Hi all,

Google Finally Launches Braille Keyboard for Android Devices

Google announced on Thursday the launch of a virtual braille keyboard
for Android that’s designed to enable those with low vision or
blindness to type
on their phones without additional hardware. The tech giant says it
collaborated with braille developers and users to create it, and to
ensure it can be
used anywhere a user would normally type — including social media,
text messaging, and email apps.

Google previously developed and released
BrailleBack,
an accessibility service for Android that helps users make use of
braille devices, but BrailleBack didn’t offer on-screen typing. The
new braille keyboard,
which will roll out to devices running Android 5.0 or newer via an
update to the Android Accessibility Suite on the Google Play Store, is
activated with
a three-finger swipe up on the screen. It supports braille grade 1 and
grade 2 in English (with additional languages to follow) and it can be
turned on
or off as simply as switching between international keyboards.

The keyboard uses a standard 6-key layout and each key represents one
of 6 braille dots which, when tapped, make any letter or symbol. For
example:

Tap dot 1 to type the letter A.
Tap dots 1 and 2 to type the letter B.
Tap dots 1 and 4 to type the letter C.
Tap dots 1, 4, and 5 to type the letter D.
A swipe left deletes a letter, while a two-finger swipe left deletes a
word. Swiping right adds a space, while a two-finger swipe right or up
inserts a
new line or text, respectively.

“Today, braille displays make typing accessible on most phones and
computers through a physical braille keyboard. But it can be
time-consuming to connect
an external device each time you want to type something quickly on
your phone,” wrote Android Accessibility product manager Brian Kemler
in a blog post.
“As part of our mission to make the world’s information universally
accessible, we hope this keyboard can broadly expand braille literacy
and exposure
among blind and low vision people.”

The braille keyboard is the latest accessibility effort from Google,
following on the heels of others announced at the tech giant’s I/O
2019 developer
conference.

[AI] Software Developer Makes Corona Virus Statistics Website Accessible for the Blind and Partially Sighted

2020-04-12 Thread Ronald Escrader
Hi All,

FYI:

Software Developer Makes Corona Virus Statistics Website Accessible
for the Blind and Partially Sighted

A Boston-based software developer wanted to make COVID-19 stats accessible
He created a website that would be easily readable by electronic
braille readers and other assistive devices used by the blind and
partially sighted.

Tyler Littlefield, a software developer based in Boston, has created a
database of COVID-19 statistics meant to be accessible to the visually
impaired.

Called
CVStats.net,
the site organizes up-to-date COVID-19 data in simple charts
specifically designed to be legible to a range of aid devices the
visually impaired use to
access websites.

For Littlefield, and many other people with visual impairments, trying
to stay updated during the COVID-19 pandemic has been a challenge
because many of
the commonly shared charts and graphs are inaccessible, including
those from the CDC and Department of Public Health.

“For many people with various types of disabilities, graphics and the
information conveyed in them is hard to read and understand,”
Littlefield told
Vice.

“I believe in the idea of open data, data that everyone can access to
help make informed decisions. Finding this lack, I created CVStats to
present the
data to users in a straightforward way, free of ads, click-through
news articles and graphics.”

One of the main obstacles in making COVID-19 information more
accessible are the conventions of modern web design. With a profusion
of autoplay videos,
pop-up windows, and animated inserts, many modern websites make it
difficult for braille embossers to scan a webpage and convert its
content into a braille
printout.

“Clutter is the enemy of tactical legibility,” Naomi Rosenberg of the
accessibility firm Lighthouse told Vice.

“For each of these, a blind reader is at the mercy of the designer,
writer, or educator to produce quality graphics, concise image
descriptions, or properly
formatted tables,” Rosenberg said.

One possible alternative to visual graphs are ‘sonification curves,’
which translate graph lines into rising and falling sounds to try and
convey a similar
sense of magnitude, something that an aid device won’t be able to do
without simple and accessible data.

Another challenge, according to Sassy Outwater-Wright, Executive
Director of the Massachusetts Association for the Blind and Visually
Impaired, is that
many healthcare facilities don’t post clear or accessible information
about their policies.

For instance, some drive through testing sites only allow private
vehicles, not taxis or other commercial vehicles, which would be
important for a visually
impaired person who can’t drive themselves to know before planning a visit.

“The moment that I heard everything was going drive-thru I kind of had
a cringe moment because, other than in the hospital, there’s really no
other way
to access that testing, and for many in our community, including
myself, who are immunocompromised, that puts us at a much higher
risk,” Outwater-Wright
said.

“We don’t get the benefit of staying in our car, we don’t get the
benefit of trying to continue to social distance. We have to go in.”

[AI] 3D Printed Tablets with Braille Could Help Visually Impaired Patients Improve in Taking Medication

2020-04-08 Thread Ronald Escrader
Hi All,

FYI,

3D Printed Tablets with Braille Could Help Visually Impaired Patients
Improve in Taking Medication

Researchers from the UK and Spain continue to study the potential to
use 3D printing to transform pharmaceuticals, outlining their studies
in the recently
published ‘3D Printed Tablets (Printlets) with Braille and Moon
Patterns for Visually Impaired Patients.’

3D printed medication is an ongoing focus for scientists and
manufacturers today, eager to put all the benefits of progressive
technology to use. And while
the use of Braille with printlets is a novel idea, it fits in
perfectly with the idea of patient-specific treatment—meant to prevent
dosage errors and
encourage the visually impaired to keep up with their medication.

“Previous studies revealed that one of the leading causes of
medication non-adherence was impaired vision, wherein approximately
97% of patients with visual
impairment have difficulties reading medication labels, even in the
presence of optical aids, and around 24% have difficulties in
distinguishing medications,”
stated the researchers. “Moreover, patients with visual impairment are
twice more likely to need assistance with medicine management, wherein
one-third
of the patients will require continual support for medication administration.”

While Braille is ‘the universal tactile writing system,’ the Moon
system stems from Latin Roman letters produced using raised
shapes—much like the regular
alphabet in structure. The researchers decided to print these writing
systems directly onto the printlets.

SLS 3D printing was used to fabricate the orally disintegrating
printlets (ODPs) with Braille and Moon patterns, allowing patients to
have fast knowledge
regarding medication. Paracetamol was used as the model drug.

“Moreover, as these printlets are designed to disintegrate rapidly in
the mouth, they do not require the co-administration of water,” said
the researchers.
“As such, this encourages self-administration of medicines, improving
patient compliance and treatment efficacy.”

In using an SLS 3D printer to etch the patterns into the printlets,
the researchers noted that the exercise of doing so actually added
weight to the printlets;
in fact, just one Braille dot added a 3.8 percent increase in weight,
while the Moon patterns added an increase of 4.9 percent. The patterns
were, however,
still visible as they allowed for tactile recognition.

As mechanical properties were evaluated, the researchers noted that in
adding the patterns, the printlets were not affected.

Mechanical properties and disintegration times of the printlets with
or without the addition of the Braille patterns.
Disintegration properties were not notably affected, and neither were
release rates of drugs.

“Favorably, this technology offers the added benefit of using
different shapes that could be inferred to a medication’s name, timing
of intake (e.g., morning/evening),
or its targeted indication (e.g., cardiovascular drugs),” concluded
the researchers. “More importantly, as the pattern is directly printed
on top of the
tablet, the medication could be easily identified even when taken out
of the packaging. This decreases the risk of medication errors and
improves adherence
to treatment. In addition, as these printlets disintegrate rapidly
(e.g., within ~5 s), they avoid the need for water. This makes it
easier for these patients
to swallow the formulations, supporting self-administration and thus
avoiding the need of a career.

“For the first time, this study demonstrates the use of 3D printing to
fabricate personalized dosage forms targeted to blind or visually
impaired individuals.
The SLS 3D printing technique could be used to manufacture printlets
with Braille or Moon patterns on their surface that could be read by
blind individuals.
It is likely that this innovative concept will provide a revolutionary
approach for the treatment of visually impaired individuals, improving
independence,
medicine adherence and reducing medicine errors.”

[AI] Envision Launches AI Google Glass for Blind and Visually Impaired Users

2020-03-18 Thread Ronald Escrader
Envision Launches AI Google Glass for Blind and Visually Impaired Users

Award-winning iOS and Android smartphone app Envision, which enables
blind and visually impaired people to independently access visual
information around
them, has announced plans to integrate its AI-powered software
technology into Google Glass.

Google Glass is a small, lightweight wearable computer with a
transparent display for hands-free work.

Envision developed its software on Google Glass, with the recently
upgraded hardware of its Google Glass Enterprise Edition 2. The
combination of Envision’s
software with Google Glass provides blind and visually impaired users
with a less obtrusive and hands-free way of accessing the world around
them, empowering
users with independence to ‘see’ the world around them.

Envision’s software uses artificial intelligence (AI) to extract
different kinds of information from images and then speaks the images
out loud so the
user has a greater understanding of the environment around them.

According to Envision, its software provides the fastest and most
accurate OCR (Optical Character Recognition) available, and can read
any type of text
from any surface, such as food packaging, posters, computer display
screens, QR and barcodes, and handwritten text.

Additionally, the software can recognize faces, describe scenes,
detect colours, find objects, and read complex documents and letters.
The software is
also capable of recognizing text and scripts in more than 60 languages.

First available as an iOS and Android smartphone app, Envision was
awarded the Best Accessibility App at the 2019 Google Play Awards.

Now, Envision’s software will now be embedded in smart glasses,
providing blind and visually impaired users with a more unobtrusive
and hands-free way
to access the world around them.

Karthik Kannan, Co-Founder of Envision, commented: “Working with
Google Glass’ technical specifications and build quality has been
ideal for our development
needs.”

“The level of support we’ve received from the Google Glass team has
enabled us to replicate the fantastic user experience of the Envision
app and deliver
it in a seamless way that empowers blind and visually impaired people
worldwide with a hands-free, easy way to ‘see’ the world around them
through the
spoken word.”

[AI] How to Clean Your Mobile Device to Kill the Coronavirus

2020-03-18 Thread Ronald Escrader
Hi All,

 Did YouKnow?

How to Clean Your Mobile Device to Kill the Coronavirus

With people around the globe taking extra precautions to prevent
infection from the new coronavirus, including increased hand washing,
 wearing masks (even
if they’re not advised if you’re not already sick), and avoiding large
crowds, there’s one item that nearly everyone uses, but many forget to
 clean: smartphones.

While doorknobs, light switches, and the like all get wiped down, you
may not think to give your smartphone a thorough cleaning. But you
 should, as it’s
a device that you hold in your hand all day and put up to your face.

Prior to the coronavirus outbreak, smartphone makers told consumers to
avoid using disinfecting wipes or sprays on their devices to keep from
 damaging
the coating on their touchscreen displays. Apple, specifically, told
iPhone owners to simply use a cloth dampened with water to clean their
 phones.

The iPhone 11, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Max, meanwhile, could be cleaned
using a cloth and warm, soapy water, according to Apple.

But with the coronavirus marching across the globe,
 Apple has changed its guidelines.
The company now says you can use a wipe with 70% isopropyl alcohol or
a Clorox wipe to clean your iPhones.

Apple says to gently wipe your device, so don’t scrub at it, and don’t
submerge your device in any disinfecting cleaner. The company also
 says you shouldn’t
use bleach, which could seriously damage your phone. You should also
avoid getting disinfecting cleaners in your phone’s ports, which could
 cause additional
 damage.

Your smartphone is, more or less, a rectangular petri dish. Various
studies have found that the phones carry bacteria from virtually
 everything you touch.
And, considering people use their phones in the bathroom, some phones
also have fecal matter on them.

There’s still no complete understanding of how long the coronavirus
 can survive on surfaces.
 The World Health Organization
says the virus may last hours or even days outside of the body, so
cleaning your phone is absolutely worthwhile.

Companies like PhoneSoap produce UV cases that bathe your smartphone
in ultraviolet light to kill bacteria. Those do work for certain
 germs, but it’s not
yet clear if it will kill the coronavirus, so use those as you see fit.

But if you aren’t already cleaning your phone with at least a
disinfecting wipe, you should start now.

[AI] Looking for some finger licking good fried chicken? You can just ask Google to place an order

2020-03-01 Thread Ronald Escrader
Hi All,

KFC Makes It Easier To Order Fried Chicken With Google Assistant
Looking for some finger licking good fried chicken? You can just ask
Google to place an order, right now only available in Canada.

Canadian locations of Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) will be
 launching a pilot
with Google – to offer seamless online food ordering through Search,
 Maps and Assistant.

Google users in Canada who search for their local KFC location on
Google Search or Maps will now see an “Order Online” button. Users
 will then be able
to place an order for delivery or pickup and pay for their order using
Google Pay without having to leave the Google platform.

Users of Google Assistant can say, “Hey Google, order food from KFC,”
to place a pick-up or delivery order from the restaurant. Google
 Assistant will save
previous orders and users can say “Hey Google, order food again from
 KFC,” to re-order their favorites.

It is unclear which delivery company will partner with KFC on voice
deliveries, but the company does work with SkipTheDishes and runs
 their own delivery
 services in Canada.

Google added functionality for users to order food directly through
its platform last year and is compatible with third-party delivery
 services, including
 Postmates and ChowNow.

With the addition of Google-based ordering and with other digital
initiatives, KFC’s Canada division has the goal of digital sales
 exceeding offline sales
 by 2022.

[AI] How to turn on Dark Mode in iOS / iPadOS & in Android 9 or higher

2020-02-23 Thread Ronald Escrader
FYI:

How to turn on dark mode in iOS / iPadOS

First, you’re going to need to make sure you’ve updated your iPhone or
iPad to iOS or iPadOS 13, at minimum. For the former, that means
you’ll need at
least an iPhone SE or iPad Air 2. To update your device to the most
modern version of iOS you can get, select Settings app, select
General, and select
Software Update.

Once you have iOS / iPadOS 13 running, enabling your device’s dark
mode is similarly simple. Select Settings > Display & Brightness, and
then pick Light
or Dark.

You can also use the “Automatic” setting to shift your device from its
Light theme to its Dark theme at sunrise or sunset (or on whatever
custom schedule
you prefer). And if you find that some of your favorite apps don’t
have a dark mode they can use, you can force that, too.

How to turn on dark mode in Android 9 or higher

You’ll first need to make sure you’re using the latest version of
Android—specifically, Android 9, at minimum. For example, the Google
Pixel stock version
of Android, checking for and updating the smartphone involves
selecting the Settings app, selecting System, selecting Advanced, and
selecting System Update.
(The specific steps / names of screens might vary depending on which
Android you have; Samsung Galaxy S9 owners, for example, would go
Settings > System
Update > Check for Updates)

Once you are updated, go back to your Settings app. select Display,
and you should either see an option for “Dark theme,” “Night mode,” or
something to
that effect. If you don’t, select the Advanced section, and you should
find it there.

There’s no “schedule” feature for dark mode on Android; it’s either on
or off. However, if you want to give yourself a little extra control
over whether
you’re staring at black or white backgrounds, swipe down from the top
of your device, pull down the Quick Settings bar to expand it, and
select the pen
icon in the lower-left corner. From there, you’ll be able to add a
dark mode shortcut, which at least gives you an easy way to switch
modes.

[AI] What Do Alexa Ring Colors Mean?

2020-02-23 Thread Ronald Escrader
Hi All,

 Did You Know?

What Do Alexa Ring Colors Mean?

Amazon Echo devices are known for their distinct Alexa ring colors.
These look very cool in the dark, but their purpose expands beyond
 cool aesthetics.

Knowing the meaning behind ring colors is fundamental for interacting
with the device. If you have partial or low vision, the following
 maybe helpful to
 you.

 Blue Alexa ring color

Blue is the ring color you will see most often. Amazon Echo devices
emit a spinning blue ring when they are powered on. The device will
 also display a
blue ring when listening. In addition, a lighter tone of blue will
point towards the direction of the person who woke the smart speaker.

Once the user asks a question or requests an action, the Blue Alexa
ring color will alternate between blue and light blue. You may also
 see a spinning
blue light that ends in a purple flash. This indicates Do Not Disturb
 has been activated.

 White Alexa ring color

Amazon Echo devices use a white Alexa ring color to display volume
levels. If the volume is set to 100%, the whole Alexa ring will be
 white. If it’s at
50%, only half will be lit. If you ever see a spinning white color,
this means Alexa Guard is on Away Mode.

 Orange Alexa ring color

When connecting to your network, the color will turn orange and start spinning.

 Purple Alexa ring color

A purple Alexa ring color is letting you know the device is having
trouble connecting to Wi-Fi. You can check your router or look into
 the device settings
 using the Amazon Alexa app.

 Green Alexa ring color

The color will flash green when someone is calling you or Dropping In
on your device. This will turn into a spinning green light during a
 call.

 Yellow Alexa ring color

The Alexa ring color will pulsate in yellow when you have an unopened
message. Just ask Alexa to check your notifications or play your
 messages to hear
 them.

 Red Alexa ring color

The color will be solid red when the Amazon Echo device’s microphone
has been turned off. This will also happen when you turn off the
 camera (if your device
 has one).

 Lights off

When an Amazon Echo device has no lights on it means it is listening
and ready for your orders. It could also mean the device has no power.

[AI] Panasonic Modifies Camera to Correct Color Blindness

2020-02-13 Thread Ronald Escrader
Panasonic Modifies Camera to Correct Color Blindness

Panasonic and India’s Dentsu Aegis Network have created a specially
modified camera that enables color blind photographers to see rich
 colors.

The two groups collaborated to produce a special version of the
 Panasonic G90 / Panasonic G95, featuring a modified electronic
viewfinder, for Indian photographer Hizol Choudhary.

“As a photographer, India has always fascinated me with its cultures,
its diversities, its festivals, and also its vibrant colors,”
explained Choudhary, who has protanopia, a color blindness caused by
the absence of red cones (visual color perception cells), leaving only
the cones that absorb blue and green light.

“When I transitioned into being a full time commercial photographer,
many of my colleagues told me, ‘You can’t comprehend the colors, how
will you do photography?’ And then there was this particular incident
that I remember was like, the guy, he booked me, everything was full
and final. And later on I got to hear from some of my colleagues that
he booked someone else, because I don’t know the colors.”

That moment was a big blow to Choudhary. “When the incident happened,
I thought, no, it is a big, huge part of photography, huge aspect of
photography. I got disheartened a bit, I pushed myself again, and
throughout time I figured my way out around.”

He assembled a team to help him produce his photographs and ensure
that the colors are correct, but it eroded his independence. “I do
rely on my team a lot whenever it comes to complicated colors. I am
not able to bring out the complete justice to my work if I am not with
them or if they are not helping me.”
Panasonic and Dentsu’s Think Tank produced the special G90 / G95 for
him, as part of the #RightToColour campaign, an effort to highlight
the 300 million people worldwide with colorblindness, and to empower
 photographers affected by the condition.

“We researched around the deficiency and found a simple solution to
solve this problem, a……… special viewfinder for the camera,” said
Dentsu’s chief creative technologist, Gurb…aksh Singh. “This allows a
colorblind photographer to see the frame in rich vibrant colors before
the shot is captured, subsequently boosting the confidence to capture
 the subject being photographed.”

Choudhary’s heartwarming experience of taking his first images with
the camera is captured in the below video. While the equipment was
developed exclusively for him, it marks a remarkable step forward in
camera technology and we would love to see this become a product
 available globally.

[AI] Kyocera Develops Smart Cane to Help Prevent Accidents at Train Stations

2020-02-13 Thread Ronald Escrader
Hi All,

FYI:

Kyocera Develops Smart Cane to Help Prevent Accidents at Train Stations

The prototype Smart White Cane developed by Kyocera makes use of
wireless transmission technology.

Railway operators have been placing platform doors to prevent blind
and visually impaired passengers from falling onto the tracks or
colliding with moving
trains. But not all stations can be fitted with these doors.

Kyocera launched the visually impaired pedestrian support system on
February 12, at the co-creation space Creative Fab located on the
first floor of the
company’s Minato Mirai Research Center, which will support blind and
visually impaired people to walk safely at station platforms and other
places.

When the cane scans electronic tags attached to embossed blocks on the
station platforms, or on the train cars, it warns the user with
vibrations along
with an audible message.

The company installed Smart White Cane, which combines its proprietary
technology RFID and vibration and voice information transmission
technology, with
passive RF tags at the station platform and at the junction of trains.
When “Smart White Cane” enters the reception area of the tag, a
mechanism has been
developed to notify pedestrians of danger through tactile transmission
technology.

The company hopes to put the system into practical use within three years.

[AI] Milwaukee Becomes the third City to have a transit system that has partnered with the app ‘Aira.’

2020-02-10 Thread Ronald Escrader
Hi All,

City of Milwaukee Announces New Program to Make Navigating More
Accessible to Visually Impaired Transit Users

 February 9, 2020 3:53 pm

The Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) has announced a new pilot
program that visually-impaired riders say has potential to change
 lives.

On Wednesday, MCTS announced that Milwaukee will become the third city
in the nation, behind New York and Boston, to have a transit system
that has partnered with the app ‘Aira.’

The app connects users with professionals using their smartphone
cameras, allowing those professionals to provide real-time assistance
 to blind and visually-impaired riders.

The highly trained professionals are able to help riders read signage,
find their way to and from bus stops, identify obstacles and offer
 real-time directions.

“My blindness, just like any other disability, presents me with
challenges and hurdles that I face every day from reading my mail, to
identifying items in the kitchen, to navigating around my community,
no matter if it’s getting to work, or doctors appointments or getting
my kids to and from school,” said Cory Ballard, who was candid about
those challenges during a press conference on Wednesday. “Technology
has allowed me to overcome those challenges and has allowed me to jump
 those hurdles.”

“With this partnership, it can really empower individuals and give
them the confidence that they need to become confident travelers in
 their community,” said Ballard.

The Aira app is not new to Milwaukee. There are more than 45 different
places around the city of Milwaukee that offer Aira assistance.

The pilot program will allow travelers who use MCTS to get around even
 easier, for free.

“Now, in Milwaukee County, you could land at the airport, head
straight to the zoo, hit up a few of our parks and then come visit me
at the courthouse all using the Aira app to get around. That is
something that wouldn’t have been thinkable years ago and now it’s not
just thinkable -its the new norm,” said Milwaukee County Exec. Chris
 Abele.

Israel Cazares, who is visually impaired and works hard to help make
the city of Milwaukee more accessible, said the new tool will help
 with day-to-day life.

“It’s tremendously exciting that Aira is now available to, not only
take us to work, but take us from work and of course, in case you
didn’t know, Aira is also available at a lot of the beer gardens in
the area and, who doesn’t like a beer in Milwaukee?” said Cazares.

MCTS and its partners are hosting three upcoming training sessions for
any user who would like to receive in-person assistance setting up the
app and learning how to use it. Those will be held:

 Wednesday, Feb. 12: 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Vision Forward 912 N. Hawley
 Road, Milwaukee

 Wednesday, Feb. 12: 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Vision Forward 912 N. Hawley
 Road, Milwaukee

Those who cannot attend the training sessions can call the MCTS
Mobility Management team at 414-937-3256 for more information, or
 visit their website for instructions.

Testimonials and frequently asked questions. Vision Forward
414-615-0124 and Beyond Vision 414-758-2736 also have staff members
available to help users learn how to use the app

[AI] Israeli startup NovaSight Ltd. wants to treat lazy eye by letting patients watch movies.

2020-02-05 Thread Ronald Escrader
Hello all,

Israeli startup NovaSight Ltd. wants to treat lazy eye by letting
patients watch movies.

Lazy eye, also known as amblyopia, is a condition that affects up to
4% of all children, according to the American Optometric Association,
and can be entirely cured by wearing an eye patch. NovaSight has
developed an alternative course of treatment for amblyopia that
ditches the eyepatch, instead using movies to train patients’ eyes.

The condition amounts to when the two eyes aren’t synced up in their
movements. Normally both eyes will focus the detail-oriented fovea
part of the retina on whatever object the person is attending to; in
those with amblyopia, one eye won’t target the fovea correctly and as
a result the eyes don’t converge properly and vision suffers, and if
not treated can lead to serious vision loss.

It can be detected early on in children, and treatment can be as
simple as covering the good eye with a patch for most of the day,
which forces the other eye to adjust and align itself properly. The
problem is, of course, that this is uncomfortable and embarrassing for
the child.

NovaSight’s innovation with CureSight is to let this alignment process
happen without the eye patch, instead selectively blurring content the
child watches so that the affected eye has to do the work while the
other takes a rest.

It accomplishes this with the same technology that gave people double
vision back in the early days of 3D: glasses with blue and red lenses.

Blue-red stereoscopy presents two slightly different versions of the
same image, one tinted red and one tinted blue. Normally it would be
used with slightly different parallax to produce a binocular 3D image
— that’s what many of us saw in theaters or amusement park rides.

YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKE New Features Coming to iOS 12

In this case, however, one of the two tinted images just has a blurry
circle right where the child is looking. The screen uses a built-in
Tobii eye-tracking sensor so it knows where the circle should be. This
makes it so the other eye, affected by the condition but the only one
with access to the details of the image, has to be relied on to point
where the child needs it to.

The best part is that there isn’t some treatment schema or tests,
children can literally just watch YouTube or a movie using the special
setup, and they’re getting better, NovaSight claims. And it can be
done at home on the child’s schedule.

The company has already done some limited clinical trials that showed
“significant improvement” over a 12-week period. Whether it can be
relied on to completely cure the condition or if it should be paired
with other established treatments will come out in further trials the
company has planned.

NovaSight has been developing and promoting its tech over the last
year; it also has a product that helps diagnose vision problems using
a similar application of 3D display tech. You can learn more or
request additional info at its website.

[AI] Microsoft’s Project Tokyo Helps Visually Impaired Users ‘See with Modified HoloLens

2020-02-03 Thread Ronald Escrader
Hi All,

In an effort to provide assistance where it can, Microsoft in 2016
launched Project Tokyo, a partnership among researchers in the U.S.,
U.K., China, Japan, and India to explore technologies that might help
those with impairments interact with the world around them.

Four years later, it’s borne fruit with a device — a modified version
of Microsoft’s HoloLens augmented reality headset — imbued with
algorithms that provide info about people within the wearer’s
surroundings.

According to a blog post published by Microsoft, the research group
began by following athletes and spectators with varying levels of
vision on a trip from the U.K. to the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de
Janeiro, Brazil, observing how they interacted with other people as
they navigated airports, attended sporting venues, and went
sightseeing, among other activities. Machine learning experts on the
Project Tokyo team then …developed the aforementioned algorithms,
which run on graphical processing units housed in a PC connected to a
HoloLens from which the front lenses have been removed.

An LED strip affixed above the HoloLens’ band of cameras tracks the
person closest to the user and turns green when said person has been
identified, in order to let communication partners or bystanders know
they’ve been seen or to cue them to move out of the device’s field of
view. One computer vision model detects the pose of people in the
environment, providing a sense of where and how far away they are.
Another analyzes footage from the headset’s camera to recognize people
and determine if they’ve opted to make their names known to the
system.

YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKE VIP: Get a Good Dongle

All of this information is relayed to the wearer through audio cues.
For example, if the modified HoloLens detects a person one meter away
on the user’s left side, it’ll play a click that sounds as though it’s
coming from roughly that distance to the left. If it recognizes the
person’s face, it’ll play a “bump” sound, and if it spots a person
that’s known to the system, it’ll announce their name. A separate,
second layer of sound resembling a stretching elastic band guides the
user’s gaze toward the person’s face.

When the HoloLens’ camera focuses on the person’s nose, the user hears
a high-pitched click and, if the person is known to the system, their
name. Users can alternatively ask for an
overview and get a spatial readout of all the names of people who’ve
given permission to be recognized by the system, and they’re alerted
with a spatialized chime when someone’s looking directly at them.

Project Tokyo, which is still ongoing, follows on the heels of efforts
like Microsoft’s Seeing AI, a mobile app designed to help low- and
impaired-vision users navigate the world around them. More recently,
the company debuted Soundscape, a navigation app that uses binaural
audio to help visually impaired users build mental maps and make
personal route choices in unfamiliar spaces.

Through AI for Accessibility, which was announced in May 2018,
Microsoft pledged $25 million over five years for universities,
philanthropic organizations, and others developing AI tools for those
with disabilities.

The program aims to reward the most promising cohort of candidates in
three categories — work, life, and human connections — with seed
grants and follow-on financing each fiscal quarter.

With Regards,

[AI] UPMC is First to Implant Wireless Retinal Device in the U.S.

2020-01-30 Thread Ronald Escrader
Hi There,

UPMC is First to Implant Wireless Retinal Device in the U.S.

January 24, 2020 12:46 pm

Clinical trial will test use of retinal prosthesis to treat advanced
age-related macular degeneration.

UPMC has implanted the first patient in the United States with a new
wireless retinal device as part of a clinical trial aimed at restoring
partial sight to patients with advanced age-related macular
degeneration (AMD), a disease that leads to permanent blindness.

“Vision research has advanced dramatically in the recent past and UPMC
is at the forefront of this revolution. This is the first of many such
breakthroughs led by UPMC and Pitt that will benefit patients with
vision loss in our community and around the world,” said José-Alain
Sahel, M.D., director of the UPMC Eye Center, Eye and Ear Foundation
chair of ophthalmology and distinguished professor at the University
of Pittsburgh School of Medicine who initiated the trial at UPMC. “We
are proud to be the first center in the United States to test this
next generation retinal implant that could help treat an incurable
disease like AMD.”

The system, called PRIMA, is designed to restore sight in patients
blinded by retinal degeneration. It consists of a 2×2 millimeter,
30-micron thick miniaturized wireless photovoltaic chip, placed under
the damaged retina and works in tandem with augmented reality glasses
that have a built-in miniaturized camera and infrared projector.

The chip acts like a tiny artificial retina, made up of 378 tiny
electrodes that convert infrared light from the glasses to electrical
signals that are carried by the optic nerve to the brain. After
receiving the implant, patients undergo an intensive rehabilitation
program that trains their brains to understand and interpret the
signals from the implant in combination with their remaining natural
vision. Compared to earlier-generation implants, PRIMA is wireless and
has significantly more electrodes, which allows for the transmission
of more visual information.

YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKE New Technology Could Change the Way We Listen to Music

“This is an incredibly exciting first for us at UPMC and I’m honored
to be a part of it,” said Joseph Martel, M.D., the implanting surgeon
at the UPMC Eye Center and the Pitt School of Medicine, and the
principal investigator of the trial at UPMC. “I’m grateful to our
patients who have volunteered to participate in this trial, without
whom this would not be possible.”

AMD is the leading cause of vision loss in people older than 50.
Today, it affects approximately 14 million people in the United
States, and the prevalence is expected to rise as the baby boomers
age. As AMD progresses, the center of vision becomes increasingly
blurry. “Atrophic” AMD, which accounts for a large proportion of
advanced cases, has no curative treatment available.

The UPMC feasibility trial is running in parallel with the
first-in-human trial in France, which involves five patients with
advanced AMD, who now have been followed for more than a year. The
12-month results from the French study demonstrated the ability of
most patients to identify sequences of letters and there were no
device-related serious adverse effects.

“We are working with a great sense of urgency because the aging
population of the United States, especially the western Pennsylvania
region we live in, will see a significant rise in the number of
patients at risk for vision loss through diseases like age-related
macular degeneration, glaucoma and vascular eye disease, as well as
earlier onset genetic conditions such as retinitis pigmentosa,” said
Sahel. “This is why our physicians and researchers at UPMC and Pitt,
in collaboration with our U.S. and international colleagues —
especially at the Paris Vision Institute at Sorbonne University — are
taking a multi-pronged effort to treat and rehabilitate patients with
vision impairments.”

In March 2019, UPMC broke ground on the UPMC Vision and Rehabilitation
Tower at UPMC Mercy, which when completed, will provide advanced
specialty clinical care and innovative programs for visually impaired
patients. It also will be the home for the vision research program at
Pitt and UPMC.

The PRIMA implant was invented by Daniel Palanker, Ph.D., professor of
ophthalmology at Stanford University, and licensed and developed by
Pixium Vision, a spin-off from the Paris Vision Institute. Sahel is a
co-founder of Pixium and holds shares in the company.

Extra inputs on AXE PRO TOOL.

What is axe Pro?

The most effective way to build accessible websites and apps is to
incorporate accessibility testing into the earliest stages of your
development process. Automated accessibility tools like axe have done
a lot to help ensure that developers are catching issues while they
code, but a lot of accessibility issues still require additional
testing performed by an expert.

Axe Pro is a new kind of accessibility testing tool that helps you
perform more advanced accessibility testing without having to become
an expert. It includes a series of intelligent guided tests that take
you through a series of simple questions about your page content and
then build an issue report based on your answers.
•Axe Pro tests are performed via a web-based app in conjunction with a
Chrome browser extension.
•It lets you perform more advanced accessibility testing without
requiring special accessibility expertise.
•In addition to the advanced testing modules, axe Pro performs all axe
automatic tests.
•With axe Pro you can manage multiple accessibility tests, limit the
scope of your testing to a single component or part of a page, and you
can export issues.

[AI] Axe Updates: Introducing the Keyboard Guided Test

2020-01-29 Thread Ronald Escrader
Hi All,

Below is the new update of the "Axe tool" on keyboard guided test.

Axe Updates: Introducing the Keyboard Guided Test

We are very excited to announce the immediate availability of the 4.3
release of the axe Chrome Extension! Included in this release are bug
fixes, usability improvements, and a new Intelligent Guided Test for
axe Pro users.

Introducing the Keyboard Guided Test

The Keyboard Guided Test is the first new test to be added since axe
Pro was made available last year. This test is designed to help raise
issues around missing focus indicators, missing ARIA roles, keyboard
inaccessibility, and many others.

All of this is accomplished by the axe extension automatically tabbing
through all of the stops on the page and collecting information about
each one. Once this is completed, the user is asked a series of simple
questions like many of the other guided tests, and Voilà! A succinct
list of accessibility issues with the tab stops on the tested page.

Screenshot of focus indicators highlighted via the keyboard tool

Figure: Notice the focus indicators numbered 1 through 13 that were
automatically added while going through the keyboard intelligent
guided test

Usability & Improvements

As part of this release, the URL of the page being analyzed is listed
in the “What you’re analyzing” section. In addition, we have renamed
the Scoping functionality to use the word “Component” to more
succinctly reflect the usage trends in modern day web development.
With this capability, users can analyze individual parts of a page
(modals, forms, etc.) so they can focus on particular areas of
interest without being bogged down by excess test results.

Upcoming Releases

The team behind axe Pro is hard at work on a number of improvements
and can’t wait to share the fruits of their labor. Stay tuned to this
blog and our Twitter feed in the coming months for a number of
enhancements and improvements coming to your favorite accessibility
extension as well as information about general availability.

Upgrade to axe Pro for free and try our 7 guided tests, manage
multiple tests, export results, and more…

[AI] Microsoft employees: present with live captions & subtitles in PowerPoint

2019-02-18 Thread Ronald Escrader
Hey All ,

FYI.. how to use AI-powered live captions & subtitles whenever in PowerPoint.

Take a look at the latest in the new live captions and subtitles
features in PPT, and the call to action from the team “Today, we are
encouraging users across Microsoft to start using AI-powered live
captions & subtitles whenever they present with PowerPoint”

From: Joshua Segeren
Subject: Microsoft employees: present with live captions & subtitles
in PowerPoint

When we think of the most impactful presentations—the ones that
educate or influence, inform or enlighten, or profoundly change the
perspectives of people sharing that moment—whether it’s in a
classroom, boardroom, lecture hall, all-hands, living room, or
wherever the ‘stage’ may be—we may sometimes forget that not everyone
in the audience has the same opportunity or ability to participate.

Today, we are encouraging users across Microsoft to start using
AI-powered live captions & subtitles whenever they present with
PowerPoint, whether from a Windows 10 PC, Mac, or from the browser. We
built this feature natively into the product—inspired by, and building
upon the success of the Presentation Translator add-in—to help make
presentations more inclusive, especially for those in the audience who
may be deaf, hard of hearing, or less comfortable with the language
being spoken.

The feature is already available for Office 365 Insiders on PowerPoint
Desktop (Win32) and Mac, and we’ve been iterating through data,
feedback and insights from many of you (thank you!). Over the next
couple months, we will drive stability, performance & health, and
complete the last few pieces of user-centered functionality to ensure
incredible experiences that presenters & audiences can trust for the
WW GA rollout.

More organic, full-length presentations from users across Microsoft
will help us build up ship confidence—so please dogfood, share your
likes & dislikes (and any other feedback), and feel free to forward
this to other internal distribution groups!

Start using live captions & subtitles in PowerPoint!
For all platforms, we highly recommend using a headset or other
external microphone (e.g. conferencing mic), and a stable/fast
internet connection while presenting with live captions & subtitles.

PowerPoint Desktop (Win32)
o Make sure you're on Windows 10, and have the latest PowerPoint
build: File > Account > Update Options > Update

The latest build is 16.0.11409.2.

Re: [AI] Accessibility of rolland FA06 keyboard

2018-10-31 Thread RONALD ESCRADER
Hi There,

First of all I would like to know which model of Roland keyboard your
friend has purchased?

And as I am aware there is no such keyboard which is accessible or
rather screen reader supported.

But if you let me know the model of the keyboard may be I can help
your friend in knowing the features of the keyboard or for the same
you can just type he model nuber of the keyboard on youtube and you
get the user video manuals and your friend will know how to operate
the keyboard.

Regards
Ronald Jason Escrader
