Re: [AI] Science for VI students in classes XI and XII

2010-05-29 Thread Simon Jacob - Inclusive Planet
Dear Kartik,

If you are looking for engineers from different parts of the world, I
suggest browse through the profiles on Inclusive Planet. One quick way of
doing it is to enter the word engineer in the search box. You will be
shown results by file, by channels, and by users. The search result of users
has thrown up 45 results, out of which I am sure you would find atleast
10-12 relevant profiles. You can use the send message button which is there
against each profile to send them a message. I am pasting the links of a few
relevant profiles to give you an idea.

Jeevan who has pursued his B.Tech and has low vision
http://www.inclusiveplanet.com/en/view_quick_profileun=user/95

Morten Tollefsen, a blind person from Norway who is working as a research
scientist http://www.inclusiveplanet.com/en/view_quick_profileun=user/2811

Fred, from the US who is a BS in Engineer from University of Carolina
http://www.inclusiveplanet.com/en/view_quick_profileun=user/2929

We have realized that providing a people search by location, profession,
school etc would be a big help for VIP's searching for similarly placed
VIP's across the world. So very soon, we shall be launching a powerful
profile search utility. In the meanwhile if you are interested you can
browse through the intro wall which has the profiles of VIP's from more than
50 countries. Here's the link to the introduction wall
http://www.inclusiveplanet.com/en/intro_wall_olderposts

Let me know if you need any other help.

Warm Regards,
Simon Jacob

[AI] TED Talks

2010-05-18 Thread Simon Jacob - Inclusive Planet
Dear Access Indians,

I wanted to share that TED Talks are now available on Inclusive Planet. TED
is small non profit which has revolutionised the world by spreading powerful
ideas, in the areas of design, entertainment and technology. I am a big fan
of TED Talks, as they provide great insights and knowledge into a variety of
topics, and moreover its also entertaining and fun to listen to. The audio
quality is pretty good, so its a pleasure to listen to.

Here's the link to the TED Channel
http://www.inclusiveplanet.com/en/group/559043 For all those who are music
lovers on the list, do remember to listen to the performance of the
prodigious Sirena, a 11 year old violinist
http://www.inclusiveplanet.com/en/channelpost/560455 . For marketing buffs,
don't miss the talk by Seth Godin
http://www.inclusiveplanet.com/en/channelpost/559153

For all those who are not members of Inclusive Planet, I just wanted to
share that the channel structure is open to all. So you can read the posts,
and also use the flash player to listen to files even if you are not
registered on the site. Only for commenting and downloading files is the
logging in required. Of course it would be great if more members join the
conversations, and share your own collection of files.

Hope you guys enjoy the TED Talks. We are also working to get more
interesting content on Inclusive Planet in accessible formats. If anyone of
you has any ideas, or suggestions, please feel free to drop me a mail.

Warm Regards,

[AI] Workplaces in Mumbai with a diversity policy

2010-05-17 Thread Simon Jacob - Inclusive Planet
Dear Access Indians,

A journalist from the times of india is doing a feature on the diversity
policy of workplaces in Mumbai. In other words she is looking for
information on organisations which are actively involved in hiring people
who are differently abled, and take efforts to make the workplace inclusive.

If any of you are working in organisations which have an active policy, I
would request you to get in touch with me, so that I can connect you to the
journalist. The idea is to showcase the work done by these organisations,
and that in turn would also lead to awareness about the importance of
diversity at the workplace.

Apart from that if you think you can contribute in some way towards the
feature do let me know.

Do contact me off the list to avoid building traffic on this list.

Warm Regards,
Simon Jacob

Re: [AI] which is better to join, TISS or IIM Indore?

2010-05-12 Thread Simon Jacob - Inclusive Planet
Hi Goma,

Congratulations! Its an achievement indeed!

I had gone through a similar situation in 2005, when I was deciding between
IIM K and FMS. I ended up taking IIMK. I can empathize with your confusion,
as that was a confusing period for me indeed. But one thing is for sure,
whatever decision you take, it will be great for you, as both are fantastic
institutions. So there is no right or wrong.

The first thing which you will need to decide is the area you want to major
or specialise in. Because each of the institutes has its own strengths and
weaknesses depending upon the area of specialization. At a broad level, if
you are clear that you want to specialise in PMIR/HR, then TISS seems to
have the upper hand. However, on the other hand if you intend to major in
any other category i.e finance, marketing, operations, strategy etc, then
the IIM Indore would be a better bet.

The final decision is something you will have to take, I am listing down
the positives for both institutions, which will help you make the decision.

For TISS

   1. If you are clear that you want to major in HR or PMIR then the course
at TISS is one of the best in the country. The only other college which is
equally reputed for HR courses is XLRI.. As TISS is focused on the PMIR/HR
course, thus you will get access to the best of faculty, study material,
better peer group who are focussed on HR careers and so on.
   2. TISS has been running the PMIR course for a long time, hence has a
very strong alumni network. the alumni network and the TISS brand thus helps
in placements in the HR field.
   3. Location: Since its in Mumbai, the industry interaction, easy to
access to companies to do projects is a plus point.
   4. Fees: During my time the fees of TISS was almost 2 lacs lesser than
other institutes. And now with the fees of IIMs going up, the difference
might be even bigger. I don't have the latest data, so please verify this
   point.
   5. Batch Size: During my time TISS had a small batch size of around 30.
Therefore in any good or bad placement year, the placement remains fairly
consistent, in other words its easier to get placed with a smaller batch.
Again please verify this point, as I tried to search the site for the
current batch size but couldn't get it.

For IIM Indore

   1. Like you mentioned the brand IIM is indeed a big brand, and you get
   branded for life
   2. If you are not very sure about HR, and are keen on other
specialisations especially marketing and finance, then IIM Indore will
definitely offer a larger variety of courses to choose from.
   3. Larger batch size of IIM Indore has the positive effect in terms of a
larger network, greater batch interaction, peer to peer learning and a lot
   more fun.
   4. Younger Institutes like IIM Indore tend to be more vibrant and full of
activities. As the students strive extra hard to build their institute
brand, and get noticed when compared to the older institutes. This is
something I had personally felt when I was part of IIM K. The amount of
activities we would be involved in was much higher than the established
   institutes.

Hope this helps. Like I said there is no right or wrong :) Congrats once
again!

By the way you should get in touch with Rajesh Mehta, who is a TISS Alumnus
and works with IBM HR. Also check on Pagalguy.com I am sure you will find
some people who would have faced a similar situation to yours.

Do let me know if you need any other inputs.

Warm Regards,

Simon

First of all Congratulations!!!

The final choice is yours, consider the facts like, placement, expenses,
scholarships, and the most important availability of study Material in
accessible format.
Talk to the pass outs of the institutes, there are a couple on the list and
I know for sure you know some of them personally.

My vote is for TISS

Thanks
Mukesh

Hi friends.

I am seeking for your valuable suggestions. I could make to the final
selection admission list of prestigious Institute of both TISS, Mumbai and
IIM Indore by the grace of God. Now I am unable to decide which to join as
HR in TISS is best in itself and is even performing at power in industry and
on the other hand as the brand name of IIM matters the most. IIMS means
IIMS. Plz help me to decide.

Re: [AI] Books download from bookbole

2010-05-03 Thread Simon Jacob - Inclusive Planet
Dear Parvesh,

The instructions for downloading the file can be found at this link
http://www.inclusiveplanet.com/en/faq#Option_A
 http://www.inclusiveplanet.com/en/faq#Option_A
I am also summarising the steps for the same here.

1. Visit inclusiveplanet.com and log in by entering your username and
password. Bookbole is now known as Inclusiveplanet.com hence the different
link.

2. Once you have logged in, use the search inclusive planet edit box,
where you can type the name of the book you are searching for. If you want
to browse through the collection, then you can go link files and look at
the recently shared and most viewed files. You can also browse by subject,
browse by author, browse by language etc.

3. Once you find the relevant book, against each book there is a download
link. Use the same to download the book. Please ensure that you turn off
your pop up blocker, as a lot of times people have faced problems as the pop
blocker prevents the download from happening.

4. If you cannot find the book, use the request feature to request other
members for the book. I am sure there will be someone who can help you out.

You might want to check out the FAQ section of the site which has
tutorials on how to use the site effectively. Here is the link for the same

[AI] Banking Exam Preparation

2010-04-14 Thread Simon Jacob - Inclusive Planet
Dear Access Indians,

I keep seeing requests for study material for banking exams. I could see
that people like Vamshi and Rajesh have taken initiatives to make material
available. Also Yogesh has made material available through his channel
entrance exams on inclusiveplanet.com

I began to wonder if there was any way to make this exam preparation more
effective. I mean every year I would assume hundreds would be taking this
exam, and each year there is this effort put in to get the best material.
Sometimes the material would not be sufficient or at times it must be
outdated. Moreover if someone is just starting prep could there be way to
guide them through the early steps, the do’s and don’ts of test prep.

In my opinion, the more sustainable way for study material to be accessible
is to figure out a way to make publishers/coaching classes look at banking
exams/ test prep for the blind as a business proposition. I have just begun
to do basic research in this space, and would appreciate your valuable
inputs on the same. Some of the questions I have in mind are:-

1. What are the popular sources of material currently used for banking
exams. Websites, Names of Books and coaching classes if any.

2. Is there a need for better material or are the current prep materials
satisfactory. This is a crucial question, as I don’t want to fix something
which isn’t broken!

3. Could you list down the specific areas of improvements required in the
existing study material.

4. In what format would the material be preferable – an e-book or an audio
book

5. Any other challenges faced while preparing for these exams. Also share
any other insights/experiences related to the same.

Once I complete my research and if the findings make sense, then I will try
and approach people who might be interested in making study material
accessible. I am not sure if we can have the discussion on this list. So you
can send me your responses to simon.ja...@inclusiveplanet.com . If you are
too lazy to draft a mail, I can give you a call just drop me your contact
number or sms/call me on 98199 36418

Looking forward to your responses.

[AI] MERCI Needs your help

2010-03-16 Thread Simon Jacob - Inclusive Planet
Dear Access Indians,

I wanted to request the group members to help out 3 young entrepreneurs who
are starting a computer training institute for the blind called MERCI in
Madagascar. This is the idea of Karin from Norway who is blind, and wants to
ensure that visually impaired in Madagascar get access to computers. She got
this idea when she was in India for a 11 month course at IISE Cochin.
Currently less than 10 blind persons have access to computer education in
Madagascar, and thats what the team at MERCI is trying to change,.

Would request each of you to review the curriculum on

inputs Even those who are not members of Inclusive Planet, can comment on it
by choosing the link Add Comment. They want to ensure that the best

their training, then please feel free to share it on Inclusive Planet.
