Excel formula mentioned by you will allow month to be displayed if the date is 
= today's date. 2014 has nothing to do with it.
This formula will not work even if you input yesterday's date (though year is 
2014).
As per the requirement mentioned in your email there is no problem in the 
formula indicated by you.

State run Telecom Operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has announced 
the revision of 20% Special Discount Scheme for Government Employees on 
Broadband Plans of DSL and WiMAX Services.

I am not an expert on webwism, but I feel its safe. I was going thru some web 
pages indicating various web capture solving methodologies. In those pages it 
was suggested that capture solving may be undertaken as the first step i.e. 
before starting filling in the details on web page. This will ensure that no 
data transmition takes place when one is submitting an image capture. Further 
this will help in background processing of image capture i.e. while capture is 
being solved user can fill in the form and avoid the problem of timeouts on 
some web pages. I understand that webwism works on server level, but a couple 
of other services (I cannot recall there names) required a human intervention 
(captured was solved by transmitting screenshot to various volunteers who 
actually view the capture, solved it and returned the values)

There is a shortcut in Windows itself for accessing system tray "Windows Key + 
B" (B for Bravo). I am normally using the said command and not using the JAWS 
command of Insert+F10. I think one can use it with NVDA also as it's a windows 
shortcut so should be independent of screen-reader software.

This is in continuation to the email from Amiyo on the subject matter.

  1.  As suggested by Amiyo, pasting unformatted text is the best as it allows 
you to have a complete command on the presentation of foot note i.e. it helps 
to remove any inconsistence  between old foot note and modified foot note.
  2.  As for your second question regarding correcting mistakes pertaining to 
accidental capital words, you can select the entire paragraph and select its 
case as "Sentence Case". Selection of Sentence case shall remove  any capital 
letters from the sentence except for the one in the starting of the sentence.  
After changing the case, you can specifically change the case of any alphabet 
which is denoting Proper Noun etc. I know this is a bit long and cumbersome 
method and may be a nightmare for the author of any project report. Please do 
share any other better methodology that you may find while exploring the 
solution for the said problem.

At the onset I would like to thank all the group members who had spared their 
valuable time and tried to provide solution to the problem faced by me on the 
subjected matter. As suggested I had made a couple of changes in Adobe Reader 
but the problem persisted. I made several abortive attempts to rectify the 
issue but could not succeed.
Yesterday while checking the Add-ons installed in the Internet Browser I 
noticed that there were many add-ons installed. One of he Add-ons that was 
present was an Adobe toolbar (or something similar). I simply disabled it and 
was happy to find that the problem was solved.
I would again like to thank the list members for their valuable comments for 
resolving the problem.

Dear List Members,

Hope all are doing fine.
I would like to seek the guidance of various Techies on the problem being faced 
by me.
I am using JAWS 13, WIN7 and IE9. Everything was fine till yesterday morning. 
Yesterday morning when I tried to open Internet Explorer JAWS announced the 
presence of "open parent Document" Button.  Physically there was no button on 
the screen (as confirmed by sighted person).  Sighted person also confirmed 
that website has loaded properly and the said button was not visible. I pressed 
"Insert+f5" key to check various form fields present on the webpage. To my 
utter surprise I got only a single form element of "Open Parent Document" and 
other Google edit field and Google search button were missing.
In an effort to rectify the problem I even uninstalled the Internet explorer 9 
update and reverted to Internet explorer 8, but the problem persisted.
Above said problem is not appearing while working on Google Crome. But I am 
used to working on Internet explorer and am not willing to changeover  to 
Google crome till it is absolutely essential.

Please help.

There are two solutions for your problem:

  1.  Set the cell data type as Text by going to format cell option.
  2.  Prefix an apostrophe sign before writing the STD code. Putting apostrophe 
sign tells excel that the data entered in cell is a text type data and 
automatic formatting are not to be undertaken. Apostrophe sign is not visible 
on screen and while taking print outs.

Some of the main criterion for selecting air conditioner are:

  1.  Size of the room. Typically you can multiply the length and breath of the 
room in feet and divide by 100 to arrive at the desired tonnage of the AC. For 
e.g. A room having a dimension of 12 feet x 13 feet, AC with 1.5 ton capacity 
is good enough (12 x 13 /100 = 1.56).
  2.  Now-a-days, AC comes with wide variety of star ratings. Higher the star 
rating, more efficient is the AC i.e. less power consumption but at the same 
time, higher star rating means higher price tag. In order to arrive at a break 
even value one needs to undertake a calculation. You can Google around for the 
said calculation
  3.  Before going to shops it is better to visit online websites for 
finalising the specifications and desired features in the AC. Often it has been 
seen that the salesman are not willing to indicate various features and often 
tends to pass on the leaflet for an individual to study. At times they are also 
not aware of the specifications. Checking online helps one to get a feel of the 
cost of the AC and the specs available. This info helps in bargaining and 
demanding a particular model. Typically salesman will tell you that a 
particular model is not good because of n number of reasons while the fact 
remains that the said model is not available with him. So move around to 
multiple shops before finalising the AC. Most of the shops are now resellers 
only and all the service is being provided by individual company only so go for 
vendor who is offering lowest price for the short listed model.
  4.  In case budget permits, it is better to go for ACs with remote.
  5.  Now-a-days, ACs do come with a power mode. In this mode one can define 
the amount of power consumption that can be consumed by AC so as to keep a 
check on the electricity  bill and avoid a shock at month end.
  6.  Another good feature available is sleep mode. In this mode the 
temperature control of AC is increased gradually in the night. It has been 
observed that due to drop in external temperature the efficiency of AC improves 
and results in chilling effect towards morning. Often this results in body 
pains in the morning.
  7.  Please do use a power stabiliser in case your locality experiences 
voltage fluctuations. Stabiliser is typically available for Rs. 3000 and is 
good for compressor health.
  8.  Remember to clean the filter located in the front of AC for better 
cooling experience.
  9.  All the companies mentioned are standard companies and may be selected 
based on individual budget and features.
  10. The most expensive part of AC is its compressor so check the duration of 
its warranty.

[AI] Time to limit membership.

Dear list members,

I came across AI Mailing list accidentally while surfing internet almost 5-6 
years ago. I had joined the list with hesitation as I was not aware about the 
quality and quantity of mail messages being generated from the list. However I 
never regretted my decision and am very satisfied with the mailing list. I have 
learnt a lot of things based on experience and advices of many other members. 
Reading response from other members have forced me to look at many aspect of 
our life in a different manner. I had developed some of my survival techniques 
in an isolated manner but many threads like socialising in social gathering, 
tips for taking food at parties etc have provided me with the ideas being used 
by other VI persons. In fact I would like to suggest that if another mailing 
list catering to lifestyle related issues can be started.
Apart from AI mailing list I had joined a couple of other mailing lists 
pertaining to subjects like mobile phones, JAWS etc. On date I have stopped my 
subscription of most of other mailing lists and currently subscribed to AI and 
Mobile AI mailing lists.
Like all mailing lists which are catering to people with diverse demographics, 
AI mailing list too often witnesses a mood swing. But thanks to the vigilant 
moderator, he regulates the traffic of list by steering or closing various 
threads so that the large interest of the list is conserved. Considering the 
importance of mobile phones in individual's life, recent move of creation of 
Mobile AI mailing list was a good step to segregate and control mail traffic. I 
would say that I am not a very active member of the list but try to contribute 
to the mailing list after carefully checking the response of various other 
members and avoiding the duplicate entries. I also refrain myself from writing 
mails which I consider will not help in improving the knowledge base of other 
members (with an exception to current mail).
I hope list members would agree that off late the quality of emails reaching 
the list too have improved. I remember a couple of years back there were many 
mails with a response like : I don't know the answer of this query" etc. 
Now-a-days we rarely find such useless replies. List members too have  started 
refraining themselves from making personal comments, responding to various 
piracy related emails etc. I remember some years back, a single email 
requesting for pirated software used to generate 10 - 20 emails, with  remarks 
like "now you will have a stick from moderator" or "go and study the list 
rules" etc. I used to wonder that so much traffic was not generated when 
somebody asked what is the meaning of JAWS or NVDA or what is Talk Software etc 
when compared to criticism mails. I am happy that people have graduated to next 
higher level and started showing maturity.
In my opinion putting restriction on membership shall be a highly unreasonable 
requirement and should be avoided. In case the size of our mailing list has 
swelled to alarming level and needs some trimming then may be options like 
re-validation of email addresses can be undertaken. List members can be 
requested to click a link and re-enter the email address. I hope by undertaking 
such action and allowing this activity to be open for around one month, most of 
the active email addresses shall be validated. Also an appeal can be made to 
list members to avoid duplicate email id entries in the same mailing list and 
voluntarily remove mail addresses which they are not monitoring on regular 
basis.

This email is in continuation to what zoher has stated in the previous email.
Excel consider "blank space" as an entry so it is proposed to modify the 
formula mentioned by zoher as:
=if(a1>=35,"pass","")
In the above line I have removed the blank space between the last two " signs 
i.e. instead of quote space quote you can only write quote quote (without a 
blank space).
This will ensure that no value is stored in the cell in case the condition is 
false.
It may be noted that for excel  even a blank space is a valid entry (although 
it is not visible in printouts or screen)

My experience with the said website is good. There website too is fairly 
accessible. I have requested them to make it more accessible during filling a 
recent feedback form. I have found that they have a very good search 
methodology where in one can drill down to the desired product. For eg. I 
wanted to purchase a cell phone. I selected the brands, its price range and the 
specific features and got a list of phones meeting the defined criteria. 
However when I wanted to alter or remove a criteria specified earlier then I 
could not locate any ways to do the same. Subsequently I took a sighted 
assistance to remove the said criteria. My friend told me that there is a short 
cross sign next to the selected criteria. Once the said cross sign was clicked 
the said constraint was removed.
Apart from the above shortcoming I found the site accessible. Its compare 
feature too (used for comparing upto 4 models of product) is very good. Owing 
to its good features, I would recommend people to use the site. I would like to 
indicate that till now I have used this site for purchasing computer 
peripherals and an Ipod only.

As the subject line suggest, kindly inform me regarding availability of any 
JAWS script for VLC. I am interested to know about the following:

  1.  How to check elapsed / remaining time
  2.  How to go to a specified play time.
  3.  Also is there any way in which the player can be configured so that it 
can start from the point from which it was stopped on previous occasion.
  4.  Can we change the skip timing from the default of 1 minute (Ctrl+right 
arrow).

Above features shall help in making listening of Audio books more pleasurable.

Dear Mukesh,

The problem indicated by you can be resolved by using VLOOKUP function in 
Excel. VLOOKUP function is a short form for Vertical Lookup. This function 
searches alphabetically in a database.

You can therefore do the following:

  1.  Create a worksheet called "Master List" or any other name desired by you. 
You can then input district names in column No. A and their corresponding 
Abbreviations or Codes in Column B. Remember to sort this alphabetically as 
VLOOKUP function will not work if the database is not sorted alphabetically.
  2.  Once the above database / Master List is ready then use VLOOKUP in your 
working sheet and provide reference to the above created list.
  3.  VLOOKUP function is not a very straight forward function and requires 
some hands on practice before using it in making worksheet. MS Excel built-in 
help can be used for the syntax of this function.
Please write back in case of further issues.

Query raised by you is very pertinent to VI community. In fact all of us face 
this kind of issues on day to day basis. My views in this regard are:

  1.  All my friends and colleagues do take good care of me. They often take my 
name before addressing me. Normally when I feel that one to one conversation 
with me is over I tend to look down indicating that eye contact is over. In 
case somebody wants to address a point to me then the person addresses me 
explicitly by calling my name. It may be noted that eye contact is very 
important for one to one conversion and the sighted person shall definitely 
call you or hint you in case he / she feels that eye to eye contact is not 
there.
  2.  During group interactions many a times it happens that more than one 
people are talking and group may or may not be hearing to all.  so whether 
other person is listening or not does not really matter.
  3.  On one of two occasions my friends have gesture me by pressing my hand 
that I should stop speaking.

My advise is don't think too much about such issues.

This has reference to a recent query regarding Muteing and unmuteing the system 
volume using shortcut keys. I hope all will benefit from the article given 
below. The article requires user to download a small utility (download link 
provided in the article). The article and its link is given below:

"Mute and unmute the system volume by pressing a key combination

Do you want to mute and unmute the system volume simply by pressing a key 
combination ?
You can easily do that with NirCmd utility. Just download NirCmd ZIP file from 
here, extract NirCmd.exe to any folder you like, and then run NirCmd with the 
following command-line parameters:
nircmd.exe cmdshortcutkey "~%folder.desktop%" "Mute Volume" "CTRL+SHIFT+M" 
mutesysvolume 1
nircmd.exe cmdshortcutkey "~%folder.desktop%" "Unmute Volume" "CTRL+SHIFT+U" 
mutesysvolume 0

After executing the above 2 lines, you'll find 2 new shortcuts on your desktop: 
"Mute Volume" and "Unmute Volume". Pressing "CTRL+SHIFT+M" will activate the 
"Mute Volume" shortcut and will mute your system volume. Pressing 
"CTRL+SHIFT+U" will activate the "Unmute Volume" shortcut and will unmute your 
system volume.
The CTRL+SHIFT+M and CTRL+SHIFT+U key combinations are just an example, and you 
can choose any hot-key combination you like, as long as the key combination you 
choose is not registered by Windows operating system or by other software.

If you want to mute/unmute your system volume by using only one key combination 
(the first key press will mute the volume and the second key press will unmute 
it), just try this example:
nircmd.exe cmdshortcutkey "~%folder.desktop%" "Switch Volume" "CTRL+SHIFT+S" 
mutesysvolume 2

...And finally, whenever you wish to remove these hot-key combinations from 
your system, simply delete the shortcuts created by NirCmd from your desktop.

Dear Group  members,

The picture captures are provided on various websites so as to ensure that 
spammers does not bring down the website by generating huge traffic. Since 
these captures are a barrier for VI community so it is a good step to get them 
removed.  But this will result in making the websites vulnerable to hackers in 
the name of accessibility and may not be accepted by web designers. In order to 
remove these image captures it will be essential to offer them an alternative 
solution. I Have seen on some websites that they will put a very simple 
question and provide a text box to enter the value, e.g. A simple question like 
"what is 2 + 2?" and user is required to input 4 in a text box next to the 
question. Such things / questions can be readily  read by screen readers and 
help in providing a barrier free environment. Sorry Vikas for not providing an 
answer to question raised in your original email.

As desired step-wise procedure is stated below:
1. Visit the BSNL portal and login into your account.
2. Select Landline Payments link
3.  CLICK FOR INDIVIDUAL LANDLINE/WIMAX/FTTH BILL PAYMENTS
4. View / Pay OUTSTANDING BILLS
5. Select the circle to which your connection belong from the combo box.
6. After selecting the circle and pressing Tab, the web page shall refresh and 
show the outstanding bills (outstanding bill will be presented in a table).
In case no landline is selected or no new bill is available then a link :Do You 
want to add an Account ?: shall appear. You can enrol new account by clicking 
on this link
7. In case table appears then click on the relevant invoice number link and a 
bill shall be displayed. At the bottom of this bill a "Pay" button will be 
there.
8. Click on the Pay button and you will be taken to a standard payment page 
where payment options  like net banking, credit card, debit card shall be shown.
9. After selecting appropriate choice you can proceed as you do at any other 
site.

Dear Yusuf Bhai,

The Selfcare site of BSNL is a very slow site as it is directly connected to 
SAP server of BSNL. It normally takes 10 minutes to open during day time. Some 
people have indicated that this site opens fast during early hours because 
number of people logged on is limited. Personally it is  a very good site as a 
lot of BSNL jobs can be accomplished but it is equally bad from VI perspective. 
I am using another website for making online payment of BSNL bills. It's the 
same site to which Bhawaniji was referring in a previous email 
(http://portal.bsnl.in/). One needs to create a free account and register the 
landline phone number to it. Subsequently one can pay the bills online. In case 
you provide your mobile number and subscribe to SMS alerts then the website 
shall send you the SMS regarding posting of bill, reminder about payment of 
bill and receipt of payment etc. It's a good site. I normally seek sighted 
assistance towards the end of payment cycle when some characters needs to be 
inputted based on a graphics image.

In fact in order to work on Selfcare sight I normally ask my sighted colleague 
to open it on his computer and perform the activities on my behalf. Any tips 
for helping me to work on selfcare independently shall be highly appreciated.

As per your query:
I am presuming that you have logged into the site.

1) There is a list of 6 items : Quick SMS, Group SMS, Sent SMS, Address 
Book and Future SMS.

2) The above list can be selected by using List  Key (L) while on the web 
page using virtual cursor.

3) Select Address Book and then you can press enter or space bar to click  
it.

4) Using heading key (H) move to heading "Add Contact"

5) Fill in the name, mobile number and select group from the combo box. 
There is a link next to combo box for adding a new group.

6) Select the "Add Contact" button.



You can also add contacts by a a link generated after submitting a SMS.  When 
you send a SMS to a new number then a add contact link appears next to the text 
"SMS submitted successfully".



Another way of adding contacts is by importing contact details using an excel 
file. Details are available at website.



However I would like to inform that these sites are unable to send SMS to phone 
 numbers already registered with DND registry. I had tried to send SMS on 
certain numbers and I got an error message.



Anyway you can continue sending SMS till majority of your contacts does not get 
registered with DND.

I am actively using it on Win Xp and Win7.

Create a Shortcut or Hotkey for the Safely Remove Hardware Dialog

If you often use removable USB devices like a flash drive, you are probably 
already familiar with the ?Safely Remove Hardware? icon that sits in the system 
tray. The problem for many people is that the icon is tiny, and clicking it 
just right to bring up the menu is a pain. Can't we just make a shortcut to 
bring up the dialog?

Of course you can, and it's really quite easy. Easier than trying to click the 
tiny icon in the tray, at least?

Update: This has been successfully tested on Windows 7 as well.

Create a Shortcut to the Safely Remove Hardware Dialog

Right-click anywhere on the desktop and choose New \ Shortcut:

Then paste in the following into the location box:

Give it a name, and you'll have a shortcut icon?

?that will pull up the Safely Remove Hardware dialog.

Assign a Shortcut Key

If you want to assign a shortcut key to this dialog, you can right-click the 
icon and open the properties dialog, then go to the Shortcut tab.

Add in the shortcut key and close the dialog. As long as the shortcut is on 
your desktop you shouldn't have to restart anything for the hotkey to work.
You can also move the shortcut to another folder, for instance your quick 
launch bar.

Tip: If you add the shortcut to the Windows Vista quick launch bar, you can use 
the built-in hotkeys  instead of bothering to assign one manually.
