Subject: [AI] Happy Travelling 2017 from Planet Abled

Hello Traveller,

A year ago today we started a unique journey called Planet Abled, to make
travel accessible for all. And the Planet welcomed us with open arms.

They were just waiting to meet each other, to explore the heritage, to have
fun, to own the places, to make new friends and reclaim their right to
travel.
In the past one year we were fortunate to have been able to provide so many
unique experiences to over a 100 people with disabilities and create
history with each tour with them.

We thank all of you to have contributed to our remarkable first year of
accessible and inclusive travel and showering us with so much love; and a
heartfelt gratitude for trusting us with your travel and holidays.
We wouldn’t have been here, without your support. Let’s celebrate a
wonderful 2016 that was.

And wish you a Trippy and Travelling 2017. May you add many more
experiences and cultures and destinations and adventures and friends in
your bouquet of life. And break all stigmas and barriers in the face.

Our Planet is our common inheritance and Everything is For Everyone. Let’s
conquer it as much as we can in 2017 and every year onward.

Warmest travelling wishes from our family to yours.

P.S. - We made a video on our first Birthday - Planet Abled turns one

Hi all,

Are there any institutions in India that run good living skills training
programs? I am talking about blindness related independent living skills.

Subject: [AI] Please help regarding basic training in Android with Talks

Dear friends,

It's Rishi Kewalramani here from Bangalore.

All this time I was using Nokia E5. But now I need to switch to Moto X Gen 2
wich I have got.

I am very uncomfortable with the touch screen which I'm sure I will be able
to overcome with some good training.

Face to face training if not over skype would really hehlp me.

So I would really appreciate if anyone in Bangalore who is using an
Android phone with talks comfortably could take out some time to train me on
the same.

I'll come at a place and time of your choosing. So whichever day and timing
and place suits you- I would be really obliged and grateful if I could have
a one to one and face to face training session.

I just want to learn the basic things that I have been using my nokia E5
for which is, making and receiving calls, smsing, typing important notes,
whatsapping, reading things line by line, word by word, character by
character etc, accessing the contacts and entering new ones, sending and
receiving emails, browsing the net, facebook, GPS, using some voice
commands, the important Talks commands and gestures etc.

Even a skype call would do from any part of the world.

You can drop me an email privately, My email id is:

rishi.kewalram...@gmail.com

Thank you very much,

Looking forward for some help please,

Sincere regards,

Rishi

A warrior’s world

By Jamuna Rangachari

*Shrikant Bolla’s grit shows us that nothing can deter us from pursuing
what we truly want, disabilities notwithstanding. And that this strength of
spirit always draws support from the Universe, says Jamuna Rangachari*

[image: breavheart]Twenty four years ago, when Srikant was born, neighbours
in the village suggested that his parents smother him to death, since he
was blind by birth. They felt he would be a burden on a family of poor
farmers. Fortunately, his parents loved him too much to even consider the
suggestion. Instead, they did all they could to better his lot, such as
enrolling him in a school. Sadly, the nearest school in his village was
five kilometres away, and he had to cover the distance mostly on foot which
he did for two years. At that point, his father realised that the child was
not learning anything since the school was not equipped to handle special
children. He pulled him out of it and got Srikant admitted to a special
needs school in Hyderabad.

*Struggles galore*

The young boy thrived in the compassionate environment of his new school.
He learnt to play chess and cricket and excelled in them. He topped his
class, even embracing an opportunity to work with the late President Dr APJ
Abdul Kalam in the Lead India project. President Kalam did not forget him
and mentioned him in one of his speeches: “When I was the President of
India, on Aug 28, 2006, I met many students from Lead India 2020 movement.
I asked all of them one question: “What do you want to become?” Out of many
responses one visually challenged boy, Srikant, studying in IX class, got
up and said, “I will become the first visually challenged President of
India.”

In spite of his merit and hard work, Srikant’s struggles did not end. He
cleared the Andhra Pradesh Class X state board exams with over 90 per cent
marks, but the Board said he could only take Arts subjects after that. He
sued the government and fought for six months. In the end, he got a
government order that allowed him to study science subjects but at his own
‘risk’.

Srikanth did whatever he could to prove them wrong. He got all the
textbooks converted to audio books, worked day and night to complete the
course, and managed to secure 98 per cent in the XII Board exams. He then
applied for IIT, BITS Pilani, and other top engineering colleges, but did
not get a hall ticket as they did not wish to admit a blind student. He
could have fought this too but decided to go somewhere better. Instead of
fighting the system he thought of proving his merit.

*Going to the top*

He searched the Internet to find the best engineering programmes for
someone like himself. He applied to schools in the US and got into the top
four – MIT, Stanford, Berkeley, and Carnegie Mellon.

He went to MIT (with a scholarship) as the first international blind
student in the school’s history. There were some issues there but he
handled all of them pretty well, with the support and encouragement of all
the people around him.

When he completed his graduation, he could have been employed anywhere but
he wished to make a real difference to his life and that of others. He did
not want others like him in India to suffer like he had.

He gave up many ‘golden’ opportunities in corporate America and came back
to India with the aim of being the change he wanted to see. Bolla
co-founded the Samanvai center for children with multiple disabilities, a
non-profit organisation dedicated to providing various support services to
disabled students aiming for a professional career.

He understood that apart from education, employment was something that
would make a huge difference. He founded Bollant Industries, an
organisation that employs uneducated and disabled employees to manufacture
eco-friendly, disposable consumer packaging solutions, which is now worth
Rs 50 crores. His mentor and guide through all these years, Swarna Latha,
trains all the employees, thereby creating a strong community where they
feel valued.

Angel investor Ravi Mantha, who met Srikanth about two years ago, was so
impressed with his business acumen and vision for his company that he not
only decided to mentor him but also invest in Srikanth’s company. “It was a
small, tin-roof shack in an industrial area near Hyderabad. There were
eight employees and three machines under the shed. I expected him to talk
about how he wanted to make a social impact, but was surprised by the
business clarity and technical knowhow in someone so young,” Ravi says.

Shrikant considers himself the luckiest man alive, not because he is now a
millionaire, but because his uneducated parents, who earned Rs 20,000 a
year, did not heed any of the ‘advice’ they received, and raised

Subject: [AI] Good news from Eyeway!

We have won! Yes, Score Foundation and the Eyeway project has won the
#VodafoneMobile4good16 award at function held last night at the Hotel Taj
Palace organised by @vodafonefoundation in partnership with the
@nasscomfoundation, @nasscom and @ndtv. It is thrilling and I would like to
thank God, our funders and all our current partners Enable-India, NAB
Delhi, Saksham Trust, Mitra Jyothi and Navchetna Institute. This year we
plan to add at least 6 more partners in different parts of India and by
2018, we hope to be a network of 24 partners. Eyeway is a knowledge
resource on living a life with blindness. Blind people can call the Eyeway
Helpdesk 1800 300 20469 from anywhere in the country Monday through Friday
during working hours and speak to our counsellors. We have counsellors at
all our partners centers and the calls are routed to the centre closest to
callers. Our aim is to provide local solutions in the language of the
caller. We would like to thank Vodafone and all our supporters to recognise
our idea . We believe that blindness is not the real problem, it is the way
we think. Also, every blind person is potentially is part of the Human
Resource of the country. We must invest in them rather than merely
providing for them. Please take this understanding on board and share it
with your networks. Again, delighted to have been considered worthy of the
award.

I feel that disability shouldn't be disclosed at the initial Interaction!
because disability is not a skill set required for the job, so if you
were selected for the Interview or face-face interaction, you could
take this topic and explain them how things work.
I don't really think majority of the companies are so insensitive these days.
it's from my experience.
instead of trying through organizations working for the Blind, it
would be better if you let the company know your strengths.
this will be helpful if you want to get into companies which are not
in their(organizations working for the Blind) database.
I think once upon a time before these organizations approached those
companies, they were unaware about capabilities of the disabled.
so why not approach them yourself and sensitize companies you want to join?
there are people who never understand though you explain, in that
case there will be other opportunities, but first please give it a
try!!!
majority of the people do listen though.

thanks and regards,
Vidhya.

If you want to get into private companies, its better to approach
organisations like Enable India at Bangloore who would have some
database of companies which are sensitive to disabled. They indeed
place some people depending on the academics and skillset. Otherwise
you can try for bank jobs which pay decent salaries. Of course, I'm
not discouraging you from trying in private sector. you may call me

Subject: [DFI] Hear2Read Tamil Text To Speech (TTS) App released in Google Play
Store

Hello,

On behalf of the Hear2Read team, I am delighted to announce that the first
Indic TTS Android App was released for general availability on August 2nd, 2016.

Simply search for "Hear2Read Tamil" in Play store. If you search for Hear2Read,
it will display 3 other Apps from another developer that also uses Hear2Read
name.

Tamil TTS is the first of several Indic TTS Apps that we plan to release this
year.

I would like to thank Mitra Jyothi for their active participation in helping
develop this App. This App could not have been developed without persistent
feedback, advice and help from Ms. Sundari Venkatesan of Mitra Jyothi.

Hear2Read TTS are designed to work on Android release 4.2.2 and up. It requires
an Android device with at least 1 GB RAM and Quad 1.2 GHz CPU>

There are over 12,000 Android devices sold by several hundred vendors. As a
volunteer team we are not in a position to test the software on hundreds or
even dozens of different devices. The App has been tested and seems to work on
the following devices:

- Moto E and G

- Samsung J2

- Micromax A177 Android One

Please send your questions, comments and feedback to Feedback [at] Hear2Read
[dot] org.

Thanks,

Suresh Bazaj
