Re: [AI] Announcing the AI convention dates
Though 25th November passed long ago, nonetheless few suggestions if could be fitted in the agenda. 1) Popular Linguistic expression hinders inclusion of blind people Little background In India how you are taught to learn and behave in life is essentially on the bases of immages you watch. And people exhibit tangential characteristics while interacting with blind people. Interestingly, majority of blind people have themselves internalised linguistic usage which practically makes no sense to them. Think for a while, expressions like: 'See you tomorrow' and 'watching movie'. We have hundreds of gods and godessess and all look different from each other but how Indians have distinguished these gods? only on the bases of their idol. Moreover in most parts of western world art of listening/hearing has prevailed over images. Remember gospel? and sermon on the mount? What I wish to convey that we need to mainstream linguistic usage which suits and adheres to our normes and makes us comfortable in society. 2) Disability and Political Citizenship Internationally disabled activists are rallying with slogans like Nothing about us without us and that needs to be reflected in our country in political representation. We have elections at multiple layers: panchayats, municipalities, state assemblies and national legislature but where are disabled and their concerns? Further many have already discussed other important issues so no more suggestions. And will try to attend the convention for the first time if my already fixed trip to western India stands postponed during that period. Hi all, 1. As others have said, leave the technology to techshare. 2. Blind sports. We need to include not only playing sports but also sports appreciation. For example, I have not fully understood how blind people follow cricket. Yes, there is the commentary but as far as I know, that gives you partial information. 3. Sex, dating, relationships, divorce, making wills, buying a house, renting (if that is a problem) when you are blind. 4. self-defense. This is not only martial arts but also maintaining situational awareness, using weapons at hand and not freezing in attack situations. 5. Entrepreneurship: selling to the sighted market. (Find a blind entrepreneur who sells to the sighted and get him or her to speak on how it is done.) 6. Disaster preparedness and the blind. What do you do if a cyclone, flood or other natural disaster strikes the area in which you are staying? You may want to add coping with fires and fire drills. 7. We could try and get someone from world access for the blind to talk and train on echo location. Yes, I know this did not work the last time but that does not mean that history will repeat itself. 8. How about a session on cooking when you are blind? 9. Do we have any blind models? If so, it would be interesting to hear from them. Re: [AI] Announcing the AI convention dates
Yes, Pranav Sir does have an interesting list. Out of his list I would too love if you had a session on sports [please explain in minute detail the method of playing both indoor and outdoor games[. I also liked the idea of you having some echo location expert demonstrate the technique telling the advantages of echo location over mobility with the white cane. Please could you have a video or audio recording of the convention for individuals like me who cannot attend? Regards Bhavya Also, Haresh Sir please couldn't you reply to so many suggestions that members are giving so that we can get a rough idea of what would be included in the convention? Following points / aspects can be covered in this regard. - Providing informational guidance regarding setting up a social entrepreneurship venture, ongoing operations and compliance, etc. - Creating a pool of individuals who are looking to work full time or part time in this area and have a drive to make a positive contribution. This can be for individuals who are looking at this as an employment opportunity, as well as for those who see this as something much more than employment. - Create a pool of mentors and guides who can provide a need based guidance during various stages of such a venture. - Create a platform / formal or informal group where all such individuals can connect and get started. In many cases people may be given a generic advice of getting associated with one of the existing organizations. While this could work for many cases, I see following limitations in that. - Any individual who has such an inner drive is very likely to have an idea about what and how he / she may want to do, which may not be what the nearby organizations may be doing. - Geographical location of such organizations may be a limitations for many individuals. - Individuals who are already leading these organizations and have established certain way of functioning may not appreciate any significant change in it. - Individuals would be functioning at different levels and would have different types of expertise, which may not be satisfactorily used. - It is not a scalable approach. Re: [AI] Announcing the AI convention dates
I think there can be a topic on how visually challenged should approach marriage. Laws, circulars, etc. can take care of education, employment, accessibility,.., but nothing can help when it comes to marriage. Its the attitude of the visually challenged, ability to instill confidence in the potential spouz and his/her family, and preferably some platforms that can bring people together that might solve the problem. So, I think a session can be dedicated to this issue. Second, many visually challenged people are struggling to socialise with the main stream society due to some reasons. This is happening with some people who come from special schools due to their inexperience in mingling with others as well as with those who become late blind and struggle to accept their newly acquired disability. So, the ability to socialise is more important for visually challenged than for others as it helps in being independent. I would have loved to present on the above topic. But I can not come to Delhi. Will come up with more on this thread. On 11/23/13, Neerajsaxena neerajsaxena12...@gmail.com wrote: Some time slot must be alloted for discussing the role of n.g.o. Hi all, Organizing a session on employment and job fair will be another excellent idea. AI team can work with interested employers and organize walk in panel. You can have successful blind people also on the panel so that any accessibility issues can be easily dealt. Even if few people get employment, then it will be really good. I heard that silverlinings does great work in training and motivating disabled people. Perhaps, you can invite the director of silver linings and ask her to give a talk on how blind people should mold, motivate, adjust, learn and thrive in the main stream work environment. Since people from different states come, it will be a great opportunity to organize job fair. Hi friends, Adjusting with late blindness of initially actively led life people , their rehabilitation is also another issue which many suffer from. I am facing this problem in my own house at present . Thus economic, socio psychological problems of such late blind can also find some place in this convention. Great news indeed. One suggestion I would have is to take up the issue of mobility and assistive technology. Already, someone has suggested accessibility of smartphones, they can be quite handy as accessibility guides and also many other things. Besides that there is the traditional whitekane and a number of other accessories that can enhance mobility for the visually challenged. Topic: Social entrepreneurship in the area of accessibility / social sensetization / counselling / rehabilitation / improving quality of life Background: There may be several individuals, like me, who are more than willing to work in the social domain or possibly make it as as a key purpose in their lives. I think that it is extremely important to help in enabling this segment of individuals to take a significant step in overall scalability. This could greatly enhance geographical reach as well as cater to many more aspects. - It is not a scalable approach. its great to hear that a convention will be held. i wish i could come for it but i have other prior commitments. unfortunately i will be in delhi on the thirteenth and fourteenth afternoon but will have to go ahead after that. anyway, my suggestion is that topics like issues faced by visually challenged persons in married life in terms of logistics and so on. specifically if both partners are blind and also if one partner is blind and the other is sighted. it could involve society's approach, spouse attitude, the immediate family from both sides etc. hope you all will find it interesting. warm regards ashmira On 11/20/13, harish har...@accessindia.org.in wrote: Friends The time to meet up in person has come again. Re: [AI] Announcing the AI convention dates
Interesting idea, please elaborate or clear for people to understand the consept. -Original message- From: Alok Kaushik Sent: 21/11/2013, 11:46 am To: AccessIndia: a list for discussing accessibility and issuesconcerning the disabled. Subject: Re: [AI] Announcing the AI convention dates Dear Mr. Harish, Here is my suggestion. This idea can be further refined by discussing with people experienced in this area.
Dear harish sir and fellow access Indians, I’m excited to know that the next convention is being organized in delhi. Considering that I’ve not yet got the opportunity of attending the AI convention before, I hope to be able to attend it this time. Following are my suggestions for the topics: 1. Work from home opportunities for persons with visual impairment Background: With several progressive decisions and movements happening in the area of education, the number of people taking higher professional education is thankfully increasing. While many individuals from different age groups from both the genders have been able to obtain good professional education from reputed colleges/universities/institutes, getting jobs is still a barier being faced by many due to various reasons including negative attitude of employers, lack of accessibility, mobility problems and protection issues for girls amongst others. As an answer to this, we get to see the trend of work outsourcing increasing around us, which mushrooms butting opportunities for interested folks to earn money in the comforts of their homes by using the skills that they have, and hence removing the many attitudinal, infrastructural, personal and societal barriers while being able to live a dignified life. Having worked as a freelancer for over 3 years, i can tell out of my personal experience that there are opportunities available for different skills/professions including programming, writing, data entry, internet marketing, training, audio production/editing, translating, transcribing etc. one can choose according to her personal preferences/skillset and work in her own pace/convenience, and this, in my personal opinion can be one of the biggest boons. 2. Internet radio as a medium of education and entertainment With the internet becoming more and more affordable and accessible, the number of fellow blind internet users has significantly increased over the last few years. Many people, who used to listen terrestrial radio stations and FM channels for information and entertainment have found to be using internet for the purpose due to its wide coverage, assortment of choices and on demand availability. One of the trends that is fast developing is of internet radio, where the content is delivered using live audio streaming using one of the audio streaming programs, that can be heard from standard media players available on computers as well as mobile phones. With the available technologies, it is now possible for anyone to share their knowledge with the world from their home computer requiring no costly hardware, which in my view can prove highly beneficial specially for we, blind and visually impaired individuals as this would help obtaining information, entertainment, training and having discussions on various important issues. I remember producing live programming for retina india radio, the live webcasts on proof reading with mr. L subramani and the one that I’ve hosted on android accessibility using the live internet streaming, each of which were heard live by over 150 people from around the world and have received tremendous responses. A Platform can be setup where people can share their knowledge, provide entertainment, get training, have discussions, ask and get answers of their questions live with the help of internet radio, and the convention can facilitate the discussion on the topic to find the interested people while answering the technical requirements, benefits and other details. I propose the above 2 topics to be covered in the upcoming AI convention, which in my opinion can prove beneficial for everyone in finding new avenues for employment, education, entertainment and a fuller life. You can drop me emails off the list if there’s any clarification/help needed from my end on any of the above topics. Thank you and I’m looking forward for attending the convention.
