Re: [AI] Confusion regarding whether to purchase smart cane/torchit or not

2022-08-02 Thread Satguru Rathi

Hi,

I've been using Smart cane developed by IIT Delhi and Saksham when it
was not even launched as a comercial product and has provided training
to many users. Here are my thoughts:

1. No smart cane has the capability to alert about pits or potholes; it
is tought when learning mobility to detect with the tip of your cane.
Hence, it is essential to learn mobility from some professionals so that
you can make the best use of your normal cane too.

2. Every device has some learning curve and so is the Smart cane! It
requires a little training about adjusting the sensors, holding the cane
the right way, and last but not the least, choosing the right "normal"
cane according to your hight and then fit the smart cane device so as to
enable it to detect the hanging or kne-head high objects with accuracy.

3. This device is not recommended in the crouded places but is quite
helpful generally. I can quote several use cases where I find it useful.
one such example is to use it to maintain the right distance from people
when in line such as in metro when buying the token or entering the gate.

4. This device can withstand the normal splashes of watter but is not
recommended in the heavy rains as it is not watterproof.

5. The device has two modes - Indoors and Outdoors. It is essential to
switch to the right mode according to your environment so as to make the
best use of the device. If you are indoors but device is set to outdoor
mode, it may provide unnecessary vibrations.

6. The device is not designed to detect vehicles but to detect object
which also includes cars. However, if the car is not directly in front
of the device, it may not detect it. The device can also alert you about
fast moving vehicles but that is not very reliable.

HTH.

Satguru.

Hi

Agreed, using technology  the devices don't warn about any pits,
however, the cane tells you the surface 2 steps ahead of you which
includes any drops or obstacles which is a sufficient time to respond to it.

2022-08-02 Thread Mohib Anwar Rafay
I never use cane as i am partially sighted person. However, I always
carry white cane in my backpack, as it helps a lot whenever i take it
out and simply hold it in my hand. It is very helpful to me at railway
station, airport, and busy streats as other people recognise me as a
visually impaired person and they cooperate me where ever needed.

Hey people,

Hope this message finds you in good health. Actually I want to know whether
smart cane or torchit actually help and worth investing or are they overrated
devices when it comes to navigating. If former is the case then can anyone
explain the pros and cons of both devices and why should I choose one over
other? Actually cost I am aware of, but I want to know about efficiency of
both. Actually I am thinking about purchasing one of them but confused over its
worth and usage.

Re: [AI] Confusion regarding whether to purchase smart cane/torchit or not

2022-07-29 Thread Nirmal Verma
Over the last 8 years I have tested all the canes and I find smart cane by
saksham to be most reliable. The problem with all these canes are that you
don't get proper training, and if there are issues with the canes you dont
know where to go and whom to approach. Most of the Indian customers of
smart cane have got it in ADIP scheme. They cant afford to send it via
courier to company. Forget about TorchIt. It doesn't work at all. extremly
poor in ergonomics and reliability. Those organisations who are
distributing it in CSR have no idea what they are doing to the community.
cheap copycats of smartcane are coming into the markets and nobody is
stopping them.

I recommend samrt cane but with a caveat, be ready to courier it to company
and spend lots of money if it has complains.

regards

Nirmal

Actually, may be more useful in a controlled environment i.e.
university, housing society or any other gated complex.
Indian roads are the last use-case for such a device.

Just a personal view, makes things more confusing specially while
traveling in a busy place i.e. Mumbai local :).

Re: [AI] Confusion regarding whether to purchase smart cane/torchit or not

2022-07-28 Thread Vaibhav Saraf
Hi Aziz,

A lot depends on the cane and its efficiency, which will differ from cane
to cane. The best thing will be to try one out if you can get hands-on to
before purchasing it.

I happened to try one smart cane from Turkey, which would range between
45-48k in original price, it is a new smart cane and quite popular in North
American organizations right now because of its promises. I got a demo, and
here are my observations:

1. The cane effectively warned , with haptic feedback when something was in
the vicinity of the sensor, a tree, a person, a vehicle, a metal rod, or
anything.
2. It vibrated when I approached towards the roads, we were not totally
sure if it was telling about the road, the crossing, or warning against the
moving vehicles (which were still a bit far).
3. It was a bit bulky, but its controls were easy to use, I was told the
sensor was configurable as well, using the mobile app, which I didn't use.
4. I had to hold it in a particular orientation, so that the sensor looks
in a particular direction, tilting it to an angle might give me warnings
about the obstacles on my sides, and ignore the other side, which will not
be very useful.
5. I had this particular case where I was walking by a low-hanging tree
branch, must be 5 ft from ground level, about 2 - 2.5 ft from the sensor.
It did not catch it and I got hit with it. We tried with similar branches,
and it did not detect until about 1 - 1.5 ft. I am not sure if calibrating
the sensor would help.

Thanks,
Vaibhav

[AI] Confusion regarding whether to purchase smart cane/torchit or not

2022-07-28 Thread Aziz Minat
Hey people,

Hope this message finds you in good health. Actually I want to know whether
smart cane or torchit actually help and worth investing or are they
overrated devices when it comes to navigating. If former is the case then
can anyone explain the pros and cons of both devices and why should I
choose one over other? Actually cost I am aware of, but I want to know
about efficiency of both. Actually I am thinking about purchasing one of
them but confused over its worth and usage.
