Re: how to tell how my DB is being backed up

2008-04-01 Thread Choudarapu, Ramakrishna (GTI)
DB backup is normally done using admin schedules. Check with Q SCHED T=A
F=D, you may find an admin sched which runs BACKUP DB command.
Q VOLHIST T=DBB will display the database backup volumes.
Q DB F=D will indicate when the last backup of DB was taken and how much
of DB was changes since the last backup.

don't know how it's being backed up. I'm sure it's being done via a

How can I get rid of/delete/release volumes that were associated with a
TSM server that no longer exists?

For example, here is the history of a volume. The last use was to the
server CAPELLA which has been decommissioned. It also happens to be a
database backup for that now defunct server.

Can I just initialize it with extreme prejudice ? Will it let me ? A
simple delete volume doesnt work since this server doesn't own it
eventhough it is the library owning server!

Actually if all that was added was extra slots in the second frame, all
that needs to be run is an audit library command. This will force
your library to reaudit your current inventory including the new empty
slots. If new drives were added as well, just define the new paths and
drives to the existing library. No need to delete paths/drives/library
for this. I've done it several times when we've upgraded our scalar 10k
with new cabinets.

Thanks for the info. I just heard back from IBM support and because
our
second frame to the library was added after our original install, TSM
does not see it. We need to take an outage and delete/define all
paths,
library, drives and check all tapes back in. A little bit ugly.

Not ugly at all, and no outage is required if you do this at night,
since tape drives are usually quiet during that time anyway.

Write a batch file that does the following:

delete path (all tape drives)
delete path (for library)
delete drive (all tape drives)
delete library (library)
define library
define path (for library)
define drive (all tape drives)
define path (all tape drives)
checkin libv (library) search=yes status=scratch checkl=barcode
checkin libv (library) search=yes status=private checkl=barcode

Call the batch file library_redo. Run the file as a macro.

This should all run within a minute or two. Do it while all tape drives
are quiet.

volume history as seen below (which I did not expect). Notice the entry
for the second file has the same Backup Series as the first file. It
looks like TSM is writing a second volume since the Volume Sequence is
2, but I dont know why!

NOW I SEE IT! The Est/Max Capacity (MB): 61,440.0 is getting me. I
created this device class and I don't remember putting a size on it but
I guess I did. Anyway, when I try to change it to 8Mb TSM tells me:

ANR2017I Administrator ADMIN issued command: UPDATE DEVCLASS DBBTOFILE
MOUNTL=20 DIRECTORY=/tsmdbb MAXCAPACITY=8M SHARED=NO
ANR8366E UPDATE DEVCLASS: Invalid value for MAXCAPACITY parameter.

I tried to schnge the mount limit to 1 instead of 20 and got the same
thing

Anyone know why. I tried it from command line and the ISC ang get the
same message in the ACTLOG.

I'm interested in asking my TSM server, of 1TB on volume T9, how
much is associated with each of the two dozen nodes I know to be
present on the volume?.

I know I can calculate that by performing a prohibitive amount of work
on e.g. CONTENTS. Not interested. :)

Are there any queries (or perhaps SHOWs) anyone's ever come up with to
get that additional detail out of the server?

to go to a real operating system (**ix) to do this? Looked and found

I have a TSM 5.3 server with a 150GB disk pool (PACS_DISK_POOL).
Highmig=90 and lowmig=70. The disk pool is currently 100% utilised.
Shouldn't an automatic migration to the next storage pool
(PACS_TAPE_POOL) have started?

I tried running MIGRATE STGPOOL PACS_DISK_POOL lowmig=60 but was told
there was no data to migrate. I tried MIGRATE STGPOOL PACS_DISK_POOL
lowmig=0 but got the same response.

The next storage pool has plenty of free capacity and scratch tapes.

I'm out of ideas so all suggestions welcome.

It looks like you're currently running a database backup; that should

Has this happened before?

will create a file script.mac which contains DEFINE statements to
recreate all your scripts. Just move the file to your new system and
execute it with a macro script.mac command.

Leigh Reed [EMAIL PROTECTED] 1/25/2007 12:25 PM
Geoff,

I am doing the exact same thing at the moment. I think that there should
be an easier way than this, but this is what I have so far

select distinct 'query script',name,'f=raw outputfile=',name from
scripts scripts.scr

This gives you a text file of the format below for every script that you
have (you will have to delete a space between outputfile and
scriptname)

query script scriptname f=raw outputfile=scriptname

You can then run this file as a macro/script to output all of your
scripts in raw format to an individual text file with the respective
script name as the filename.

You can then copy these files to your new server.
Using find and replace or text editing tools you can slightly modify
your generated script from above to the format

def script scriptname  file=filename

Then run this script and it will generate all your scripts on your new
server.

I have to add that using the select to generate the original script is
not my own work, I stole it from a previous posting enquiring how to
script a number of move datas, but it is neat. Credit the original
poster (IIRC WP)

If I find a better way, I'll let you know, likewise visa versa.

import them to another. I have tried to manually create these scripts
but sometimes the 5.3 GUI chokes and won't let me, even though I have
copied them exactly.

If anyone has any thoughts on the easiest way to accomplish this I would

what am i doing wrong ? the pdf is confusing very much , for example :
...Specify the complete path to the Tivoli Storage Manager
client user options file (dsm.opt) used during the Data
Protection for Oracle session. If you do not specify this
option...

that means that dsm.sys is not looked for ?

do i have to put something into /opt/tivoli/tsm/client/api/bin dir ?

Hello Everyone,

I have been trying to figure out how to have the syntax of the below
output so that it will all go on 1 line, but so far I have been very
unsuccessful.

Here is the statement I am issuing:

select node_name,filespace_name,backup_start,backup_end from filespaces
where node_name like 'NAS%' or node_name like 'SERVER%'

And here is the output:

NODE_NAME FILESPACE_NAME BACKUP_START
BACKUP_END
-- -- --
--
NAS_SERVER_2_OFFS- / 2006-10-04
2006-10-04
 ITE 21:20:32.00
21:23:03.00
NAS_SERVER_2_OFFS- /.etc_common 2006-10-04
2006-10-05
 ITE 21:20:32.00
02:34:44.00
NAS_SERVER_2_OFFS- /apache2006-10-04

 ITE 21:20:32.00
02:21:08.00
NAS_SERVER_2_OFFS- /clearcase_prod2006-10-04
2006-10-04
 ITE 21:20:32.00
22:36:12.00

As you can see the node_name column wraps. I tried to do a left justify
and I also tried to make it 20 characters wide, but I guess I am doing
something wrong because I continue to get the same output.

I was also wondering if there is a way to change the backup_start to go
on
1 line as well and to make it include the date and the time to be just
hh:mm:ss?

Thank you in advance for any pointers you might have!

Jeff,

Agree with you : my descrition of the problem was a little bit confusing
...

So, let's go for a second round :

1) This is TSM scripting, not AIX.
2) What I'm trying to achieve is to escape quotes in a TSM script, so
that my statement, wich includes quotes, will be transmitted as is,
and as 1 variable only to the next script.

Here an example :

Test_1 script looks like :

issue message i variable 1: $1
issue message i variable 2: $2
issue message i variable 3: $3
issue message i variable 4: $4
issue message i variable 5: $5

If I issue: run test_1 test_server 1 /script/sap_inf_backup.sh PFR PAC
PLC 1
The output is :
ANR1496I variable 1: test_server
ANR1496I variable 2: 1
ANR1496I variable 3: /script/sap_inf_backup.sh
ANR1496I variable 4: PFR
ANR1496I variable 5: PAC

What I would like to get :

ANR1496I variable 1: test_server
ANR1496I variable 2: 1
ANR1496I variable 3: /script/sap_inf_backup.sh PFR PAC PLC 1

Hope this made things clearer ;-)

I'm getting a little lost in which script is doing what, so my next
suggestion would be to put a set -x statement near the top of all of
the involved scripts, and then execute them. That will show you the
values that are being passed around. You could also add in some echo
$variable statements in places to show you.

Vivian, Jeff

Thanks for your input : unfortunately it's not what I'm trying to do, my
problem is to pass all of : /usr/tivoli/tsm/script/sap_inf_backup.sh
PFR PAC PLC 1 string from script_1 to script_2 so that it would be
considered as 1 variable ($3).

I just realized that my original mail was wrong : I wrote

run script_1 test_server 1 '/usr/tivoli/tsm/script/sap_inf_backup.sh
PFR PAC PLC 1'

As it should have been :

run script_2 test_server 1 '/usr/tivoli/tsm/script/sap_inf_backup.sh

Sorry for the mistake

Hi List,

Trying to define a server command script, which basically will transmit
3 parameters (node_name, some other value, command to execute) to
another script, which in turn will build a client schedule using those
parameters..

Script_2 looks like :

DELETE SCHEDULE AIX DBB_$1_$2
DEFINE SCHEDULE AIX DBB_$1_$2 ACTION=COMMAND OBJECTS=$3 PRIORITY=1
PERUNITS=ONETIME DURATION=1 DURUNITS=DAYS DEFINE ASSOCIATION AIX
DBB_$1_$2 $1

My problem is following : how to place quotes in the script for $3 so
that I will execute following statement on the client :
/usr/tivoli/tsm/script/sap_inf_backup.sh PFR PAF PLC 1

Already tried :
run script_1 test_server 1 '/usr/tivoli/tsm/script/sap_inf_backup.sh
PFR PAC PLC 1'
run script_1 test_server 1 /usr/tivoli/tsm/script/sap_inf_backup.sh

A schedule can be associated with multiple nodes. Hence, one can rather
attempt
SELECT * FROM SUMMARY which may be filtered on SCHEDULE_NAME or
ENTITY(node) and the elapsed time may be calculated using the start_time
and end_time.

Or

Try processing the ANR2507I message from actlog:

ANR2507I Schedule (schedule name) for domain (domain name) started at
start
(timestamp) for node (node name) completed successfully at (timestamp).

Re: AW: [ADSM-L] Import Node

2006-02-06 Thread Choudarapu, Ramakrishna (GTI)
We are using MERGEfilespaces=YES option. However, due to large number of files
to be imported, actual import is starting much later. TSM is reading from first
tape onwards and comparing with the database before it can start the importing
of the data. Server is recycled before the data import is commenced. So the
import is never getting started. I was wondering if I can skip the tapes from
list of volumes which were already imported, so that the time spent on
comparing import tape with the database content is reduced.

Thanks,
Rama

Re: Question regarding Administration user ADMIN_CENTER

2005-09-29 Thread Choudarapu, Ramakrishna (GTI)
I got this from : Tivoli Storage Manager Administration Center:
Frequently Asked Questions

When you install a Tivoli Storage Manager Version 5.3 server, an
administrator named ADMIN_CENTER with the password ADMIN_CENTER is
automatically created. The health monitor uses this administrator to
access the server and obtain health information. Before you can use the
health monitor, it must be configured. This consists of setting the
default password for the ADMIN_CENTER administrator and optionally
adjusting the health monitor refresh interval. This configuration only
needs to be done once, regardless of the number of administrators and
server connections you add. The new password you specify will be applied
to all of the servers that are connected to the Administration Center.
By default, the ADMIN_CENTER administrator is locked. For each server
connection you add, you can specify whether to unlock the ADMIN_CENTER
administrator to enable health monitoring.

Re: Dual write to multiple copy storage pools

2005-09-02 Thread Choudarapu, Ramakrishna (GTI)
Instead, Please have a look at DEF STG or UPD STG with COPYSTGpools
option which allows you to write backup to primary pool and multiple
copy pools simultaneously.

Thanks for that Mark!

I have one small follow up question:

can I do the same with my management class and specify in the backup
copy group that the initial backup goes to two storage pools
concurrently? What I'm getting at is being able to write my nightly
backups to 2 places at the same time (for D.R. purposes) as opposed to
writing them to a storage (disk) pool and then copying them to two copy
(tape) pools in different locations?

Sure. Create a text file that contains the lines

  backup stg diskpool copypool1
  backup stg diskpool copypool2

Save the file as 2copywrites.scr

From the TSM administrative command line:

  tsm define script 2copywrites file=2copywrites.scr

Schedule an administrative task:

  tsm define sched 2copywrites t=a cmd='run 2copywrites' active=yes
desc='Write client data from DISKPOOL to both copypools concurrently'

Piece o' cake.

Hi List

With my current version of TSM (5.1.6.3), I know that I can copy from
storage pool to copy storage pool using as many processes as required
making it multi threaded..

In later versions of TSM (or perhaps in the future)... does anyone know
whether it is / will be possible to perform a dual write from my disk
storage pool to multiple copy storage pools at the same time? (I
understand Netbackup can do this!!)

Thanks in advance

You can write to 1 primary *and* upto 10 copy storage pools
concurrently.

I should clarify my answer.

There is no automated way to send initial backups to a primary storage
pool (DISKPOOL, for example) *and* multiple different copy storage
pools. You can modify a primary storage pool definition to concurrently
write to 1 primary and 1 copy storage pool concurrently:

  upd stg diskpool copystg=offsitetapepool

As to whether future release will allow automated writing to multiple
copy storage pools: probably not. Why? I have seen dozens of TSM
environment; not a single one of them used multiple copy storage pools
for the same data. (This is not to say they don't exist; I have just
have never seen one.) Why should Tivoli invest coding and debugging time
to such a feature when they have their plates full with more pressing
matters?

Hi Mark,

Do you know if it will be possible to do this later TSM versions?

Re: server 5.1.9.0 rec log problem - multiple servers?

2005-08-23 Thread Choudarapu, Ramakrishna (GTI)
This could be because of the typo:

dsmserv extend log extrareeclogspace 8000

Correct it to:

dsmserv extend log extrareclogspace 8000

Subject: [ADSM-L] server 5.1.9.0 rec log problem - multiple servers?

TSM 5.1.9.0 server on win2K server. I've got a very confusing problem,
and our server is totally dead at the moment so I'm in a bit of an
emergency.

We've been running TSM 5.1.6.5 for 2-3 years, I recently (8 months ago)
upgraded to 5.1.9.0, no problems. Last night, we ran out a tapes, and
therefor the automatic backup of the database couldn't happen, and
therefor the rec log filled up to maximum, and the server died and
cannot
restart until I increase the size of the log. Easy enough, I've had to
do this before, but the standard commands are not working:

dsmftm -log D:\tsmdata\server1\extrareclogspace 8000
that works fine, create/formats the new volume, but then:

dsmserv extend log extrareclogspace 8000, dies with:

C:\Program Files\tivoli\tsm\server1dsmserv extend log extrareeclogspace
8000

files\tivoli\tsm\server1\dsmserv.opt

ANR0991I Server shutdown complete.

The problem is, we don't run two servers. We've got one server, that's
all
we've ever had, that's all we want. And this brings me back to something
I've noticed since I first installed the server, which I thought was
normal:

In C:\Program Files\tivoli\tsm\ there are two server folders. a server
and a server1. In the server folder that's where most of the
executables live, like dsmserv.exe and dsmsvc.exe. In server1 folder
there are .opt .log and .bat files, among others. But definately, it
seems
that the guts of the server live in server folder.

However, the TSM management console window lists TSM Server1 as the
real
server, it doesn't even see Server. Whenever I have to deal with the
MMC window, which I try to avoid at all costs, it only ever lists
Server1, never just Server. As far as I remember, Server and Server1
have always both existed from when I first setup TSM 5.1.6.5 and it
seemed
wierd to me, but everything worked, so I thought Server1 and Server were
somehow intertwinned, but they were basically the same server. Maybe
that
is wrong, and only now is the problem showing itself.

Anyone have an idea? Again, we are down 100% until I can increase the
reclog size.

Thanks in advance,

Alex
