TSM & Oracle db backup

2002-11-25 Thread Selva, Perpetua
HI

We have a client who wants to backup his oracle db using TSM.
However, they do not have TDP nor RMAN .

He is altering one tablespace at a time within one script and hoping
to achive multi-threading(multiple sessions) on TSM.

Is this possible? I think he could only achive one open session on TSM.
Please verify this and let me know how he could open up multiple sessions( i
personally
think he needs TDP /RMAN)

any insights would be helpful

Re: 3584 library problem, how to delete drive, libr definitions wi th 2 fibre drives

2002-11-22 Thread Selva, Perpetua
We are running tsm 4.2.1.14 on r/s6000 aix 4.3.3

We have 2 logical libraries, physically split into 2, libr1 called lto3584
and
libr2 called gmrmlto3584.

libr1 has 6 scsi drives
libr2 has 2 fibre drives online not attached to the fibre switch at the
moment.

We want to un-split it and gain back 1 logical library.

Problems:

Not able to

1. delete drive definitions of libr2
2. delete library definitions of libr2
3. audit libr2

4. remove from tsm database volume definitions which are not physically
located in libr2. (they have been physically removed and are in use within
libr1).

These volumes belong to only one storage pool within libr1.

Please shed some light!

Should I physically attach the fibre drives to fibre switch before we
proceed? I'm only hesitating with this b/c we have to request upper mgmt
approval with a turn around time of whenever :-)

Please help,

Thanks,

in request of mount tape until it is provided to that site! is this what I'm

We are told that there are APARS open issues with 4.2.1.9 on these

Do we need to upgrade TSM server to 4.2.1.11? OR
JUST the san storage agent clients to 4.2.1.11 ? OR
does the tsm server has to be on the same level as the clients as well???

TSM & database planning

2002-02-12 Thread Selva, Perpetua

[Selva, Perpetua] I was following the chapter 2, tsm implementaion
planning to figure out the database size required for an upcoming project.

however, the calculation based on the book doesn't seem to make
sense with what's currently on my production system

I have a client server with 1,000,000 files( from the select
count(*) from backups where node_name=whatever) query, is this the right
way?

Re: Splitting Library LTO3584

2002-02-07 Thread Selva, Perpetua

One TSM server

It looks like I'm able to create sep.device classes and create own
primary/sec. tapepools for fibre drives
This resulted in core dumps and server crash - tape contention issues and
all

Unless, I physical(logical) configure them to recognize as 2 physical medium
changers - it seems like an
impossible task. This is the part i'm looking for help in

that each environments
are connecting to the appropriate drives , we failed b/c tapes were

DMZ and ports to be opened?

2001-11-01 Thread Selva, Perpetua

Hi

Does anyone know how to make this work successfully?

We have opened up a firewall port on the global network, is there anything
on the TSM ports
that needs to be opened for backup to be successful?

Please let us know

I'm not sure if this has been covered before, but IPXSPX, NETBIOS
and SNA are no longer valid COMMunication METHODs in your dsmserv.opt in
v4.1 We found out the hard way after upgrading from v3.1 to v3.7 then to
v4.1 yesterday. Our three hour install ended up being 11 hours after having
to downgrade back to v3.7.

We did not find any references to this in any of the v4.1
documentation, but a support call to Tivoli did confirm that these are no
longer supported communication methods.

I hope this helps others of you trying to decide whether to upgrade
to v3.7 or v4.1.

This brings up a question. Does anyone know how long v3.7 will be
supported?

The only way to send them offsite is to copy them to a copypool. DRM will
not send your archive tapes offsite. We use AutoVault (www.coderelief.com)
instead of DRM for offsite vaulting. It can vault your clients archive
tapes offsite without the need to copy them to a copypool. It can also
vault backupsets if they decide to go that route.

yesare you sure you need to archive? It sounds like you may not

NO
if you archive filea on moday of each week into a archive copy pool with a
retention on 365, at the end of the year you would have 52 versions of the
file and as you continued to archive each week, one would expire and one
would be added, but you would always have 52.

And could i check them in for restore purposes later on.. would i encounter
any problems?

Hi:
Overall it seems you want to archive a set of files on a daily basis and
then store them offsite. I assume you want to archive rather than simply
backup because you want to retain each version of the file for a long
period of time.

How you would go about it depends on your situation. For example, if you
know you want all archived files from all clients to be retained for five
years, then you would have a single copygroup archive definition defined
for the default management class and the destination going to a specific
storage pool to isolate the archives from the backups. Then you would
checkout the newly created volumes in that (archive) storage pool.

Hi:
at the command line do a q copy type=archive or q copy type=archive f=d
to see your site definitions on archived files. Each archive is a unique
instance of what is archived and the number of days it is retained is
determined by the retain version values. Once you archive the file, you can
delete or modify the original file and the archived file still 'lives' for
its retain version value.

What exactly is the conflict that you are seeing?

bytes transferred (actlog) = 3.45gb
field 20 (dsmaccnt) = 3694547000 bytes, or 3694547000B / 1073741824B/GB =
3.44GB

I would expect that to be close enough. Is there something else you're

The ANE4961I message in the Activity Log, for Total number of bytes
transferred, should be equivalent to accounting field 20 (Session KB),
reflecting all data flowing between the client and server, which includes
queries, inventory info sent from server to client for the client to
observe in figuring out what it needs to back up, and the actual backup
data.
This should not be confused with the field 17 value, the amount of backup
data sent from the client to the server, destined for a server storage pool,
which is a subset of the total session KB.

If you see conflicts beyond this, please post sample statistics from both
the Activity Log and the corresponding accounting records.

If storage pool has caching enabled, cached copies of the files will
continue to reside in the storage pool.

Little Puzzled on offsite copy procedures

2000-10-11 Thread Selva, Perpetua

I was wondering if someone could clear up certain way of how the environment
should work..

We have nightly backups going to the diskpool(for certain backups and the
others directly to tapepool)

However, backups finish by 8am... At 6:30am, there is a process to create a
copy(backup) the diskpool.. and at 10am, there is a process to copy the
tapepool..

And why doesn't the diskpool clears itself before 10am? Even with admin cmd
schedule to reset the threshold hi=0 and lo=0.. I'm only accomplishing this
manually..

Please let me know what or where i'm missing the contingency..

thanks

You may want to try removing and reinstalling the service with the dsmcutil
command.

As to why it stopped in the first place look in the nt event viewer also
review your activity log on the server. Also look in the dsmsched.log and
dsmerror.log if you have not.

There is no specific errors that seem to point to anything unusual.. One day
it will work, the other day, it won't.. Sometimes 'it says client severed',
at other times, it has missed schedules. Whatever the case maybe, the
client server's adsm scheduler would have stopped by itself..

Not really.
The storage pool tapes are usually not 100% full.

As different files have different numbers of backup versions, some of those
tapes have less and less good data; their %reclaimable value goes up over
time.

So you can't count on all the tapes in the library being 100% full.
I usually count on the tapes being at best 65 - 70% full.

Here's a select command you can use to get a feel for the %utilization of
your tapes:

 select stgpool_name, status,cast( mean(pct_utilized)as
  decimal(5,2)) as avg_pctu from volumes -
where devclass_name <> 'DISK' group by stgpool_name, status

Hi Selva.

After a volumen reachs a 0% of use by some process like reclamation, its
status is set pending. Reuse delay indicates number of days tha a volumen
keeps status pending. After, volume will be a scratch tape again.
