[AFMUG] Recent licensed link pricing?

2018-06-13 Thread Peter Kranz
Anyone priced out 18Ghz capable hardware recently? Need to do a new 3 link
build, thinking of using Dragonwave-X Harmony Enhanced MC radios.
http://www.dragonwavex.com/products/packet-microwave/harmony-enhancedmc

Curious if any new players in the market are more cost effective than
Dragonwave for a dual-carrier, all outdoor, 2x80Mhz 4096QAM capable radio.

2017-03-07 Thread Peter Kranz
Pricing on the PMP product from Siklu starts at around $800 per subscriber
unit and $2000 per base unit, but they do require license keys for full
performance.

Base sector provides a 90Hx20V degree coverage pattern

Overall sector performance between 500 Mbps and 1.8Gbps depending on license
keys

Link ranges up to around 375 meters

Each base unit can support up to 3?(I think) Subscribers

Figuring those prices, you're not going to end up too far off from the price of
the Tesla for the same run time. Tripling the batteries will put you up to
somewhere around $4500, for basically the same kWh, but if you factor in being
able to 100% discharge the Tesla setup, you're going to need to add a bunch
more battery.

I wonder how the life expectancy compares...

Looking for a ballpark price estimate off list on this:

<http://www.eltek.com/detail_products.epl?id=1142848=24677=1>

It has a distribution bus/fuse/breaker panel in the top 1U, the bottom 1U
populated with 4 x 2000W rectifiers.

Or something else equivalent that is 2U to max 3U in size, 8kW rated at
230/240VAC input.

Cogent is great as long as you have another peer to balance out “issues”. They
have a shitload of the internet as directly connected customers.

Location does make a big difference. I would in no way use them for a single
upstream. For one, Cogent doesn't have the entire IPv6 Internet. They are great
in a mix, especially if you have a route management platform or take only
customer routes.

I have never in my life personally seen an N connector rated above 11 GHz.
High-quality/expensive N connectors are used extensively in two way satellite -
such as with 3.0 meter C-band Tx/Rx earth station dishes... But you only use N
for the 50 ohm coax cables from the modem (indoors) to the electronics which
lives directly attached to the waveguide/feed on the dish (Rx LNB and Tx
SSPA/BUC).

The coax is used between 1.2 to 1.8 GHz to communicate with the Tx and Rx
electronics on the dish. A satellite LNB on the Rx side is basically a 10:1
ratio downconverter.

Like so: http://beta.satcomresources.com/sca/images/NORS3120N_detail-3.jpg

There's your single polarity waveguide interface on one side, N on the other.

If there is an 18 GHz version, it will be even more expensive.

This will not be a cable you can make yourself in the field and it will be very
sensitive to being fully seated so you will probably have to use a torque
wrench to make it work at 18 GHz.

Silly. You can weatherproof an SMA just as easy as an N connector. Good
heatshrink can be found for both.

Folks trying to use N connectors at 18 GHz are going to quickly get introduced
to the world of return loss problems.

Can this do FCC standard channel sizes in 18 GHz? Reading the spec sheet it
looks very nice, but ETSI channel sizes only, and one polarity in a 56 MHz wide
channel at 4096QAM is nowhere near 1 Gbps.

In 2+0 yes, but then once you convert Euros to dollars and buy four radio heads
the cost is approaching the cost of an existing high capacity 1 Gbps 18 GHz
product like the Exalt ExtremeAir (dual polarity 18 GHz 80 MHz wide 256QAM
radio).

112 Mhz.. your right.. gets you there..

Has anyone been able to swing this approach to deploy 112Mhz channels in the
US..? Seems like you could use 4x30Mhz channels

From

FEDERAL COMMUNICATIONS

COMMISSION

47 CFR Parts 1, 2, 74, 78, and 101

[WT Docket No. 04–143; FCC 06–141]

Rechannelization of the 17.7–19.7 GHz

Frequency Band for Fixed Microwave

Services

“C. Aggregation

11. We also proposed, in the NPRM, to permit applicants to request any amount
of available spectrum based on their specific needs, on the condition that
aggregated channels are contiguous channels, except for channels that are
already licensed to someone else in the area, and are thus blocked. Comsearch
asks us to clarify whether applicants also may skip any segments that would be
affected by interference with other links. We conclude that allowing
aggregation conditioned upon the proposed requirement that aggregated channels
be contiguous is necessary to prevent licensees from spacing their channels in
a manner that effectively could prevent others from using the remaining
spectrum in the same area. We also, however, agree with Comsearch that where an
applicant seeks to operate in a particular segment that is unavailable in the
relevant area, whether due to co-channel licenses or adjacent channel
interference as determined under our rules (including requirements to comply
with any applicable agreements with Canada or Mexico in these bands), then it
is appropriate to allow the applicant to skip that “blocked” segment of
spectrum.

Well, what do they get at a 112 MHz channel instead of an 80 MHz channel?
Europe has 112 MHz channels available now. Before, SIAE had some very good spec
sheets, so ask for them.

I also think they can do 4096QAM? 4096 QAM and 112 MHz channels might get you
there.

2x80Mhz Channel at 2048QAM = 1245 Mbps

So are they really using 4 channels?

Looks like the specs are intended mostly for European sales. 1000 MHz wide
channel is usable in the USA and would survive rain a lot better (you can go
down to QPSK with certain code rates and still do 1Gbps FDD).

Though it's good to see it's still >1Gbps at 500 MHz 16QAM.

Max transmit power on the Siklus is +7 or +10 (which you can put into a 51.5
dBi gain 60cm antenna), so you will never go as far at five nines reliability
as a more expensive, high powered 80 GHz link (Bridgewave, E-Band) which has
+18 or +19 Tx power.

It depends on how far you're trying to go and your rain zone/rain rate in
mm/hour.

Of course there is serious rain fade, it's 80 GHz. You just have to engineer
the link right.

Looking at the 2200FX it has regular SFP ports, so at 2Gbps (500 MHz channel
32QAM?) FDD, you can only achieve 2Gbps by doing an 802.3ad between two
routers. In which case no single customer data stream will exeed 1Gbps. Not
quite the same thing as having a radio with a SFP+ 10GbE interface.

That said it will probably be less costly than the equivalent options from
Bridgewave, E-Band or perhaps SIAE.

Without violating any manufacturer's NDA, this is the tip of an iceberg, the
Russians just happen to be publishing info a tiny bit earlier than the other 80
GHz radio manufacturers. There are 10GbE 256QAM FDD radios in development and
field testing from all of the significant players in the industry.

I would expect the 'new' 5Gbps to 10Gbps radios to ship in the US at a price
point under $20k per link including antennas, which will occupy the price tier
previously occupied by the 1Gbps high-powered 80 GHz stuff that began shipping
3.5 to 4 years ago. Then you have the lower powered less expensive 80 GHz stuff
like Siklu which has a max Tx power of +8 or +10 and will come down further
from its already-low price under $10k/link.

[AFMUG] Here's an idea... a POE+ powered power injector..

2016-03-08 Thread Peter Kranz
So all this talk of power injectors lately brought this idea to mind..

What about a tower mounted box, that could be powered by 48V 60W POE+

It would provide 4 switchable outputs of 24V Cambium or UBNT output.
Allowing you to overload a single ethernet cable up your tower with 4 access
points.

Perhaps an interesting accessory to these various power injector options..

Re: [AFMUG] RackMount PacketFlux PowerInjector+Sync

2016-03-08 Thread Peter Kranz
18 ports sounds reasonable to me, it will fit the needs to most any site. I
could see myself buying 2 units and stacking them such that 50% of my APs were
connected to unit #1 and 50% connected to unit #2.

On pricing, if you don’t require sync, this unit would somewhat compete with
the UBNT EdgeSwitch, ES-16-150W, that unit is $300 for 16 24V and PoE+ ports.
But it does lack several features you provide.

The alternative Netonix WS-12-400AC is $399.95

So the $800 price is a great deal compared to the CTM-2 product, but about
double the UBNT and Netonix competitor.

I think the uplift from $400 to $800 would be worth it if it supported more
voltage standards than the UBNT product, and provided redundant power options
that both of those devices lacked.

Subject: [AFMUG] RackMount PacketFlux PowerInjector+Sync

Well, it looks like it might actually be finally happening.

We are about 98% sure we have a rackmount enclosure manufacturer which we can
work with. Domestic. Product looks decent. Price is right.

Which means it's time to nail down a few details here, such as number of ports,
so I can get some enclosures cut and boards made and hopefully get this
elephant out of the room

 So I need some input:

The rough figures I'm working with here is $800 for a 18 port rackmount power
injector. Voltage and pinning jumper selectable per port. Per-port control of
power and sync. Probably some redundant power and other things built in, but
I'm still nailing those details down (a lot of it comes down to space on the
front panel of the enclosure).

PLEASE NOTE: The prices here are soft - until I get the design completed I
won't know what I can sell this for - as many of you know I try to price
things at a fair price as opposed to what the market will bear.

The main questions I have for the list are:

Is 18 the correct number of ports? 18 is looking like about the most I can
fit based on front panel dimensions. This corresponds to 3 blocks of 6 ports
(if you lose a port and need to replace it, you'd replace 6 at a time).

Other options are 16 (4 blocks of 4), and pretty much any smaller quantities of
ports which are divisible by 4 or 6.

I guess what I'm really asking here is whether the 18 port version for $800 is
the only version of this I should make or carry, or does it make sense to sell
(as an example) an 8 port version for $400 instead of or in addition to this?

surge suppressors, I’ve always assumed the surge suppression should be outside

Re: [AFMUG] Mid-Span multi-voltage power injector withredundant power..

2016-03-01 Thread Peter Kranz
Here is my ideal solution:

- Solid state fusing on each radio, so that I get cable or radio
damage it doesn’t take down my entire +24V power rail, it just shuts down that
port

- The ability to enable/disable the power rail remotely to each port
for hard resets

- A power rail that accepts two power supplies and will handle the
failure of either device without dropping the APs

- 19” rack mountable

- If device requires fans or internal power supplies, they should be
replaceable without having to take the unit out of service.

Nice to have (but not a deal killer)

- Multi-voltage capable... 48V UPOE for Siklus, 24V for UBNT and
Cambium

What I don’t want

- A built in switch, I already have fancy ass switches, why do I need
another switch in the way, probably with crappy features and poor buffers.

Try the ASR903 for your “core” switch need? Dual power (AC/DC), Dual RSPs (if
you want) and mix/match your interfaces you want. Copper/Fiber 1G/10G/etc

Wont do full BGP tables, but for MPLS/switching you’ll be good with it.

I’m looking at replacing a 6504 with one.

2016-02-06 Thread Peter Kranz
If you require full BGP tables it will radically change the routers available
to you, as many of the cavium based and Broadcom based cheap routers cannot
handle more than 256k TCAM entries. Global routing tables IPv4+IPv6 are well
over 600k routes these days.

There are several commodity linux based software routers that are capable of
10G and cheap, but I don’t know if I would bet the bank on them.

Both Juniper and Cisco have small 1U/2U devices currently that support both
full tables and a large quantity of 10G ports using custom silicon. Some grey
market inventory available, especially on the Juniper side.

Less than $100k. The chassis, enhanced scbs and high end routing engines are
fairly cheap. 100Gbps line cards are in demand and very hard to find, as
there's no real upgrade from there.

10Gbps is cheap and has been replaced by 40/100Gbps gear, so there is plentiful

PS The NCS-5001 can’t handle full tables, so you have to do FIB optimization if

A decent price for a 100G point to point circuit is ~$12k/month in a
competitive market. I've paid as low as $8k for a 100G point to point with a
lot of competition involved.

Cost of deploying will vary greatly based on how you decide to approach it..
If you do anything layer2 or higher, it will cost you more to deploy.

Is there such a thing as a small 1U rack mount UPS that has no internal

If I do a simple calculation of money invested/loaned and number of subs I get
$2088 per sub.

That’s active Ethernet, full burial conduit to each house/unit with lots of
miles of overbuild and miles and miles of extra fiber/conduit.

We also build at cost, not full retail (partners are build crews).

I expect from here on out to be nearer half that using existing infrastructure
and possibly GPON.

Re: [AFMUG] OT Large slabs of wood

2016-01-17 Thread Peter Kranz
Hey Chuck, this is a 6/4 slab, sanded down to 5/4. Its 103" long and 44"
wide. For 46 bdft. The list price was $1384 but it came with a 40% discount
of $553.. So since shipping was free, it was a $831 slab.

Since the slab came pre-sanded, final finishing was actually significantly
easier and cost me less in supplies than processing non sanded slabs.

Re: [AFMUG] OT Large slabs of wood

2016-01-17 Thread Peter Kranz
How do you keep something that wide from curling? Attaching some kind of cross
grain stabalizing board?

These slabs are all hardwoods, so I guess they are more resistant to that kind
of thing. They also are kilned and rather thick. I’ve not noticed any
dimensional changes working with African Mahogany or Bubinga in 6/4
thicknesses. I’ve made four full slab desktops out of the stuff now.

I did insert butterflies along defects however.

I guess I agree with your assertion that LTE in unlicensed spectrum will not be
on high level cell towers, but you might want to look at this presentation from
one of the cell phone chipset vendors:
https://www.qualcomm.com/documents/making-best-use-unlicensed-spectrum-presentation

Notice all the places they show LTE in Unlicensed Spectrum being used. Imagine
the effect if thousands of devices deployed in these environments used the 5Ghz
band, especially that supermarket scenario where the sector is mounted outside
the building.

This is how they are going to share the spectrum fairly. Imagine the fun with
these pulsing interference sources. I.e. a jammer for 50ms on and then off.

Have a look at these babies from Duracomm. The price is right on these to.
We are having to update a majority of our sites since the release of pmp450i
We also invested in the dc -dc converters and isolators for the -48 needed
for ptp microwave gear.

Re: [AFMUG] Wise to sell colo services?

It’s hard to make money in colocation in my experience.. I have 350kW of
colocaiton (about 100 racks) and basically break even due the challenge of
keeping it all full. Lots of churn to cloud based services.

Would it be wise to do some colo and sell all this unused upstream capacity or
not worth the trouble?

Has anyone created one of these? I've got OSHA requesting a copy of ours.

Re: [AFMUG] OSHA Injury and Illness Prevention Program..

2015-12-08 Thread Peter Kranz
We have a job site across the street from the main OSHA headquarters for
California apparently.

The tower on the site passes all the normal visual health checks, and has
climbing pegs installed. The climber was using appropriate PPE. However, since
the tower did not have a plaque affixed to it indicating it was man-rated, they
argue that we did not know if the tower was rated for climbing. I’ve never
heard this requirement, I’ve always gone with if it passes the health check,
and has a ladder or pegs installed, it was engineered to allow climbing at the
time of installation.

For any new builds you should use 50um since it is 10-Gig compatible. 62.5 is
being phased out.

That’s the one, in-line attenuation and crap antennas to make that test
environment as challenging as possible for the hardware/software combination.

I’m not sure.. Sometimes they come back the same.. sometimes different.. Here
are two tests to the same client as in the demo showing both situations:

Re: [AFMUG] What do you climbers think of this video?

2015-10-26 Thread Peter Kranz
Well honestly not scary at all. they actually have a deck to walk on and
extensive safety gear.

Now if you got rid of the walking deck, added wind, water, and some hard to
reach pipes that you had to clip onto one after another, then it would be more
interesting.

Then carry a bunch of tools and try to perform various tasks involving bolts
and wrenches.
