Well, the passively cooled CCR1009 with already take 14-57VDC, so that's a
start.

Re: [AFMUG] Anyone using the new Mikrotik CCR with passive cooling?

2016-07-05 Thread George Skorup
Honestly, what I'd rather see is a DC-DC converter built into the CCR
chassis. DC lugs/terminals in place of the AC input. 20-60VDC input.
Input polarity agnostic (for +24, +48 or -48 sites). Obviously the
output side would be regulated +24.

Sure, that can all be done externally, but I can still dream, right?

Re: [AFMUG] Anyone using the new Mikrotik CCR with passive cooling?

2016-07-03 Thread Kade Sullivan
You can easily do direct DC using a POE breakout plug. I have little plugs
that plug into an ethernet port and give you + and - DC lugs

I just deployed one of these to a site feeding an Edgepoint 16 via fiber up
the tower. Worked out incredibly well as I could power the mikrotik
directly off the load port on the charger along with sending DC up the
tower.

Seems to be working great so far

Re: [AFMUG] Anyone using the new Mikrotik CCR with passive cooling?

2016-07-03 Thread Chuck McCown
OK, now starting to understand it. I will need one of them thar internal power
supplies to measure up etc...

Most of the CCR's (with the exception of the passively cooled models, which
just have a barrel connector on the back) have an internal 24v power supply - I
think what people are wanting is a box tat will fit in place of the power
supply and give them DC terminals where the AC plug currently is.

Re: [AFMUG] Anyone using the new Mikrotik CCR with passive cooling?

2016-07-02 Thread Erich Kaiser
Most of the CCRs have 1 PSU, but two header power connectors, if you look
at Faisal's links you can see what we mean. It really would be a simple
product to produce. low input cost, probably could sell for $25/piece. It
should have screw terminals labeled with input voltage allowed and pos
/neg. You could even put in some type of fused /surge protected solution
if you wanted to get creative :)

Re: [AFMUG] Anyone using the new Mikrotik CCR with passive cooling?

2016-07-02 Thread Mathew Howard
The passively cooled CCR does already run directly off DC (it doesn't have
an internal AC power supply, like the others)... some kind of screw
terminals instead of the barrel connector would be nice, but it does work.

Re: [AFMUG] Anyone using the new Mikrotik CCR with passive cooling?

2016-07-02 Thread David Milholen
I am not a large WIsp but with 20 sites and more being added each year
where I have a Mikrotik at every site plus additional Mikrotik switches
to go at the larger sites.

Maybe a small drop in the bucket but hey even if they had a module that
would replace the power supply with terminals I would buy enough for all
my sites and extra for new ones.

I am sure Someone (Chuck) could figure it out. Even if it were only for
a few Rack mount series.

All of our sites have some sort of DC backup no UPS. This includes the
few we have with generators.

Maybe not so much in the USA, where electricity is plentiful, but Mikrotik
is wildly popular in places like Nepal and developing nations in Africa.
The line between WISP and ISP is blurry when a place never had
terrestrial/wireline infrastructure of any sort to begin with.

Re: [AFMUG] Anyone using the new Mikrotik CCR with passive cooling?

2016-06-30 Thread Eric Kuhnke
It is nice that it will run on the 'unregulated' charging voltage (27.5VDC
something or 53.5VDC) of a 24VDC or 48VDC system without damage. Easy to
wire up as a direct load, if you want to get fancy put a $10 DIN rail mount
5A DC circuit breaker.

Re: [AFMUG] Anyone using the new Mikrotik CCR with passive cooling?

2016-06-30 Thread Josh Reynolds
You'd have to use 802.3at, which is in most switches at this point. Many
cameras and 802.11ac APs require 802.3at now.

802.3af is around 15W, with 802.3at at 30W.

If it draws 30W, isn't that double what a standard 802.3af switch can
provide? It'd need to be 802.3at or a passive nonstandard 48VDC
higher-amperage PoE source.
