Re: [AFMUG] as anybody use power/unistrut for tower standoff bracket

I don't know. If you knew the load of the hose clamps, u-bolts and the ratings
on the screws/plates holding the unistrut together, maybe. You might even weld
them, add more hose clamps or actual bands. Really though, that's out of the
league of how I use them. The unistrut isn't the weak point and everything
else can be enforced or added to for more strength. Rust in Arizona also isn't
my biggest problem and we can reach all of ours with a ladder.

Very strong. Use 2-3 hose clamps, commercial ones with weight ratings. We
mount one on top one on bottom, pipe between them. Can easily handle use
hanging on them. Here we have them holding up the Mimosa's we just put up on
a windmill.

We might use unistrut for a stiff arm on a commercial tower, but we've
typically used 2 galvy pipe for that.

I think Unistrut is probably fine for the relatively short term time
frames and the loads we put on them.

Long term dedicated tower hardware with HDG is a probably a better
choice. The other issue with Unistrut (at least the galvanized stuff)
is that it's usually cut to fit properly and the cut end will rust. It
won't be enough to cause any structural issues but it will probably
leave some rust streaks and might annoy the tower owner. Stainless
would be fine but it's very expensive - the regular tower hardware is
cheaper.

Unistrut is usually just plated. If it's a quality plating job, it
might be OK, because I see several bits of galvanized unistrut here
and there, and they look fine even after years. But I occasionally
see a hunk of unistrut that didn't have enough plating, and they will
show their age.

HDG hangs in for the long haul.

Re: [AFMUG] as anybody use power/unistrut for tower standoff bracket

2015-03-12 Thread Vince West
I did not see this mentioned, so I thought I might point it out: If you are
leasing space from a tower leasing company, I wouldn't put anything like
Unistrut on it. If it is from a tower leasing company (like Crown, ATC
etc.) then I would read the contract and make sure they will allow it on
their tower. Also keep in mind, other tower hands could be on the tower and
if they knock it loose or hit it, they aren't likely to fix it if they
aren't caught in the act.

If it is privately owned, I would recommend something like an M-TOW. There
are other ways to mount if you cannot afford the M-TOW. Pipe to pipe clamps
and poles (which you are going to need anyway) aren't hard to find and not
too terribly expensive. You can also use the M-TOW-V
http://wbmfg.com/products.cfm?PID=35. Using a 6ft pipe, you can use two
(or three depending on how you set it up) to secure it to the tower. Then
there is the M-TOW-A http://wbmfg.com/products.cfm?PID=63. You can use it
the same way as M-TOW-V. These would, in my opinion, be better than
Unistrut. The A versus the V might work out better for you as they are a
little cheaper.
