Re: Kernel updating to 2.6.32-3 ABI
On Tuesday 23 February 2010, Otavio Salvador wrote: I has been informated that tomorrow (02/24/2010) a new kernel with ABI 3 will be uploaded. In front of that, I've asked to ftp-masters to ignore the package I uploaded today. Why? It makes no difference at all for D-I if the ABI is different. Let's just go ahead with the current kernel and update to 3 (or 4 or whatever) later. It will take some time for ABI 3 to be built everywhere anyway. And it may give us a chance to fix issues that are discovered with an upload now. Let's move forward and not delay unnecessarily. Bug#571035: [squeeze alpha1] installationsreport: grub2: machine doesn't boot
On Wednesday 24 February 2010, Holger Wansing wrote: This image is an image only containing a vmlinuz kernel, no initrd They never do... The initrd always gets generated when a kernel package is installed. I installed that, and booted: system starts and gets a kernel panic, because root file system is unable to be found. It's not exactly a kernel panic, but I know what you mean. That means at least, that grub2 is not the problem, what was my very first thought. Well, not being able to find the root FS may well be because GRUB is not configured correctly. When you are dropped into the debug shell, check the contents of /dev and /dev/disk/by-uuid to see if your hard disk and root partition are present. But the fact that 2.6.30 does boot that far while 2.6.32 hangs earlier probably means that there is a kernel problem with .32. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-boot-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. I don't see any problem with the search engine dropdown list without libgnomeui-0 installed under KDE. No, I mean a different issue. #561902 only requires gtk. But I can still be wrong, there is maybe no issue. The code linked from #555162 looks like it is used for moz-icon:// urls, which, in turn, are heavily used in the default theme. If I look at the code the BR refers to, then that looks to be protected by tests to see if it is running in a Gnome environment: if it's there it's used, if not, no problem. I see no reason for a dependency from that, but I may be wrong. Can't tell about external handlers without knowing what exactly to try. Edit Preferences Applications, opening a downloaded file, opening a downloaded file containing folder, etc. I tested it for mailto: I was asked what application to use. kmail was not listed, so I added it and told it to remember that. After that iceweasel perfectly opened kmail's composer for me every time. I also tried downloading a .deb, which did not yet have a handler. In the open/save file dialog I told it to open .deb files with kpackage and to remember that setting. Works fine. If I don't tell it to remember the setting, it will show the open with/save as dialog again. I've checked against iceweasel 3.06 and that works identically. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? It may even help relieve some of the pressure for CD1. Possibly we should keep it as the default browser for XFCE and/or LXDE. Latest is that the Gnome library Recommends should be demoted to Suggests with the next upload. Not sure if that will be done for all four of them or only for some. massbuild: support for building kfreebsd kernel udebs added
It looks to work correctly (even on a linux host), but the resulting udebs have not been checked in detail. Running depmod is simply skipped; AFAICT it's not relevant for kfreebsd kernels. If some other form of module dependency calculation is used, then it probably needs more work. To build kfreebsd udebs for all (both) kfreebsd arches use: $ ./massbuild kbuild --bsd Or for a specific architecture (the kfreebsd- prefix is optional): $ ./massbuild kbuild --bsd amd64 $ ./massbuild kbuild --bsd kfreebsd-i386 Other operations (kclean/krelease) and options should all work analogous to massbuilding for linux. Bug#533535: Bug#546045: hdparm: Specifying a disk using the by-id etc. links does not work with udev/hotplug
There's an alternative patch floating around on launchpad [1]. It's against Ubuntu's udev script but also applies against our init script. Main difference is that it also works for the non-udev case, and I see no good reason why it should not apply for both, especially as long as hdparm is also called from an init script at boot time. It would be great to have this change included in Squeeze. I'm CCing #533535 as, if applied, this change should not get lost if the init script is dropped in favor of a udev script. I guess for the icon issue you mean #561902? I don't see any problem with the search engine dropdown list without libgnomeui-0 installed under KDE. While Iceweasel is supposed to be DE independent, it really isn't. Sad reality, but still reality. That is indeed very sad. One would hope upstreams, especially ones for important software such as ice*, would have more clue. Now, as I said, there are several things that will break if these libraries are not installed (note you can still prove me wrong), but there are things we can probably do to make things better: - As said above, libdbus-glib-1-2 is not strictly necessary. - IIRC, in 1.9.2, upstream switched most gnomevfs uses to gio, which is in glib. That may help making the dependencies lighter. - There are patches for better KDE integration in opensuse, but we can't take them as-is. The first two above could be worked in the squeeze time-frame. I doubt the latter can. In any case, dependencies on libgnome2-0, libgnomeui-0 and libgconf2-4 are here to stay, IMHO. I'd go as far as saying they should be strong dependencies, but I allow those people that don't like gnome libraries and who want to shoot themselves in the foot to do it. In that case I personally don't think we can maintain iceweasel's status as desktop independent browser for new installations and we'll have to consider removing it from the common desktop task in tasksel. Given that the default browsers for the various desktop environments have become much more mature since Sarge, I don't actually see that as a big problem. It may even help relieve some of the pressure for CD1. Possibly we should keep it as the default browser for XFCE and/or LXDE. Therefore cloning to tasksel for further discussion. I'm leaving the original report against xulrunner as I personally still do consider this whole issue a regression when compared to earlier Debian releases, but I appreciate that your hands are tied. Bug#570906: w3m: Recommends for migemo should be lowered to Suggests
Package: w3m Version: 0.5.2-2.1 Justification: Policy 7.2 Severity: serious Given the package description for migemo installing it as a Recommends and thus by default for all users of w3g is IMO not correct. Recommends should only be used (see policy 7.2) for packages that are found together in all but unusual installation. It is especially problematic because of the very heavy dependencies migemo has: it pulls in emacs and ruby. And that's only true for systems running a GNOME desktop environment. For systems running KDE the GNOME packages are not needed and even in a lot of cases very much not desired. Except that Iceweasel has various things that break when the gnome libraries are not installed, such as icons for libgnomeui, and external handlers for libgnomevfs and libgconf (it still does broken things under KDE, but it actually works better than without). I guess for the icon issue you mean #561902? I don't see any problem with the search engine dropdown list without libgnomeui-0 installed under KDE. Can't tell about external handlers without knowing what exactly to try. I'm unlikely to encounter issues myself as I run Lenny on my desktop systems and as I'm only a very light user of iceweasel anyway (only for sites that konqueror does not handle correctly). The only one that really isn't strictly required in the libdbus-glib one. As iceweasel is supposed to be desktop environment independent, I urge you to reconsider this change. IMO the current Recommends make iceweasel unsuitable for default installation. I also feel that for packages like iceweasel integration support for specific desktop environments should always be optional. Reality is different from theory. Bug#570410: partman-base: Please default to GB
On Thursday 18 February 2010, maximilian attems wrote: if one partitions and neglects to add a suffix partman falls back to use megabytes. noticed on a goofed installed where debootstrap failed due to full disk. better default to gigabytes these days. One reason to stay with MB could be that fdisk uses MB by default. Another, more important reason is that IIRC we always display the suggested size with a MB suffix, which makes it logical that that's also the default units if no suffix is entered. If we make this change we should also consider changing the default display unit to GB. Main disadvantage of that is that we will either lose precision in the displayed MINSIZE and MAXSIZE for the partition, or we'll have to use variable units for that depending on the size of the partition, or we'll have to display more decimals. Also, the patch by itself is not enough. We will also need to change relevant templates. - partman-partitioning/new_size Currently does not mention the default units (which may have contributed to the error). IMO that should be added. - partman-partitioning/bad_new_size That template _does_ mention the default unit. - others? There may also be other templates that need changing, for example for LV size. I did not do a full scan! All in all, not a change to make lightly. As an alternative to the proposed patch we could simply mention the default units in the partman-partitioning/new_size dialog. This is the only reply I'll cross-post. My more detailed replies will be sent only to d-boot; I'll leave it up to Cyril or Julien to take back things to the X.Org or Gnome lists if they feel it needs wider discussion. I'll try to provide some background in my replies for some issues. Note that anything in my replies is nothing more than my personal current take on the proposal and patches. As far as I'm concerned everything is open for discussion. I'm no expert on X.Org or libraries, so please correct any mistakes. A small correction on Josselin's original blog post. Losing G-I does *not* mean losing support for RTL languages. Both Hebrew and Arabic are supported in the newt frontend, with proper RTL display. As I've said before I'm very impressed with how the X.Org-bases graphical installer currently works. Cyril and all others who've contributed to that deserve huge thanks. General reflections on DirectFB versus X.Org for D-I The DirectFB and the X.Org solutions both have positive and negative aspects. The DirectFB implementation has been remarkably stable and reliable for both Etch and Lenny and there have been no real issues with it on any x86 hardware. But the lack of upstream support, both for directfb itself and its integration in cairo and gtk, is a real problem and is the direct cause for the current situation. We've had excellent help from various people getting DirectFB working for D-I, but unfortunately the D-I team no longer has (and has never really had) anyone willing to fill that gap in upstream support. So what are, from my PoV, the main characteristics of both? DirectFB: + relatively simple and lightweight solution + requires only a few (additional) source packages to provide udebs - has proven to be more difficult to port than initially expected (but that's mostly due to lack of development) - Debian is only user of cairo and gtk integration - lack of upstream support is constant threat X.Org: + should be easier to port + much better upstream and Debian packaging support + much less risk of breakage in integration with cairo and gtk - heavyweight and complex solution; X.Org is designed for much more complex tasks and environments than the installer will ever need - in current implementation means significant size increase of initrd - explosion of number of source packages that need to build udebs - possibly greater risk of weird breakages after e.g. X.Org updates that will need to be investigated and followed up on - effectively requires a switch to console-setup-udeb which still has important technical and usability issues for use in D-I A few quick comments on some of the negative points mentioned for X.Org. * You may have noted that I mention initrd size and not memory usage as issue. For me this is a major issue; I'll explain why in a later mail. * The explosion of the number of udebs is a lesser problem now than it would have been for Lenny. This is due to the fact that we now have (basic?) support in britney for migration of udebs to testing. However, it *will* create a heavier workload for both Debian and D-I RM, especially in the final stages before a new Debian stable release. I'm very happy that the new X.Org based implementation will continue to use the framebuffer. Needing to include and support all the various (kernel) video drivers would IMO have been a disaster. - Even if someone steps in to fix some bugs (I heard somebody has started to publish some patches recently), it might lead to a Is that true? Are there patches and do they fix the current breakage [1]? Who worked on it? I'd very much like to see his input. dependency on a very single person, who might vanish at any time. Going the X11 way ensures that we have a few more folks working on it on the long run. Dependency on a single person is a fact of life in various FOSS (sub)projects. Very often a new person only steps up if there's a real need. And IIUC the X.Org Debian packaging team currently also has a manpower problem. But yes, in general it should be a lot better. My conclusion after the past few weeks is that from a *functional* perspective there's no real difference between the two. From a *technical* perspective DirectFB is still the better solution for D-I and if there is someone willing to work on the issues I'd personally prefer sticking with DirectFB, at least for Squeeze [2]. But from a *practical*
