all ok, and that is exactly where it is. I got the manual, though it was
a matter of finally them accepting what I put in for model number, and
then I got all 54 pages of and read it with my Kurzweil 1000, just about
perfectly. Some of the menu descriptions were scattered, but I got that
the 4 TV units were all a little different in their back panels, like
one of them had that earphone socket in front, etc. and some had off/on
controls on the rear where mine does not. :)

So, with a huge sigh of relief now, with your help which is truly
appreciated and your effort, I am finally going to hit the sack. Been
quite a long day catching up with emails plus all the rest of the stuff
I do round here. :)

hi curtis,

i agree with those that say the kef egg are good as i have had these
connected to my computer for a few years and they are really good.
but like you i recently got a large screen tv and wanted something good
to go with it.
after studying as many soundbars and surround systems around in january
which is when i was getting one i came to the conclusion it had to be a
dolby atmos system as this appears to be the future of home cinema sound
systems.
this not only gives you sound from all around you but also gives sound
from above as well so it sounds like your in the middle of the action.
lots of this type of system require you to mount speakers in the ceiling
which i didn't want to do so i then started looking for something that
can do the same thing without mounting that type of ceiling speakers.
i found 2 manufacturers that sold systems with vertual atmos sound
without having to mount ceiling speakers.
they were sony and damson.
every one knows sony but probably most people wont know damson.
damson have invented the smallest dolby atmos surround system in the
world the soundbar, sub woofer, and rear speakers are all wireless and
really small compared to normal soundbars and sub woofers.
and the way they create the over head sound is that they have a small
speaker unit that magnetises
to the top of the soundbar and fires sound up to bounce off the ceiling
to give you the sense of being in the middle of everything.
the sony models do this in a different way.
they have developed what they call their virtical sound engine which
gives off sounds tiny fractions of seconds apart and as they change
those fractions it makes it sound like things are going over and around
your head.
sony have a few of these systems, the ht-x8500 which is just a stand
alone soundbar with small sub woofer built in, the ht-x9000 which comes
i believe as a soundbar with a seporate sub woofer, and the ht-f9 which
is a soundbar with seporate sub woofer plus you can buy wireless rear
speakers as an optional extra.
in the UK the ht-x8500 costs £350 and this one was only released in
january, the ht-x9000 costs £377, and the ht-f9 costs £598 plus an extra
£260 for the optional wireless rear speakers.
all of these have HDMI ARC sockets which your new tv should have the
difference between a standard HDMI and the HDMI ARC socket is that the
ARC one has an audio return channel meaning the HDMI lead connected to
this socket on the soundbar and the tv is the only connection you need
between the 2 as it sends the sound back down the same HDMI lead to feed
the sound to the sound system.
i eventually decided to get the sony system and went for the ht-f9 [at
that time the ht-x8500 hadn't been released].
the reason i went for that one was to be on the cautious side as just
like many years ago when there was betamax and vhs and no one knew who
would win the same can be said about sound now as there is dolby atmos
and dts-x competing for the best sound, but with the sony ht-f9 this
system can work with either type of sound feeds.
both the other sony models can handle both types as well.
the damson model could not handle the dts-x sound.
also the damson method of bouncing sound off the ceiling requires you to
have a completely smooth flat ceiling which i don't have as i have artex
ceilings where theres patterns engraved in them.
the sony also have a virtual dolby atmos button on the remote control
which will simulate over head sounds from non dolby atmos signals.
after having this dolby atmos sound for the last 4 months i wouldn't
want to go back to just stereo or a standard surround sound.
my ht-f9 and the ht-9000 have both wi-fi and bluetooth capability as
well but as far as i can tell the ht-8500 only has bluetooth as i can
find no mention of wi-fi.
if you can visit somewhere that have dolby atmos systems that they can
demonstrate i'm sure you wouldn't want anything else after hearing it.
hope this helps.

pete.

The Key Egg is a very small but flexible and good sounding bookshelf speaker

The flexibility of the Egg system means it can be used for all sorts of audio
tasks around the home.
You could put the Key Egg on a desk with your computer using the USB input thus
the computer treats the Key egg as a sound card and you thereby get access to
full digital crips clear sound.
Connect the Key Egg’s digital input to your Television .
Use the Key Egg with your iPhone or other Bluetooth devices.
The Egg system consists of a left and right speaker wired together with all the
inputs and outputs on the rear of the right speaker.
You can even connect a sub-woofer if you want more bass.
I have a Kef Egg system in my Den on my computer desk though I don’t yet have a
sub-woofer connected but I’m still amazed at the sound of the Egg system.
Key use drivers which radiate the sound around the room, great stereo sound
without any sweet spots so this means that you can wandered around your room
and listen in any position you like and you still hear stunning stereo sound.
Yes you pay good money for the Key Egg system but you will be rewarded. Ief
like Bowers And Wilkins have been in the speaker game for over 50 years so they

Again you're talking with someone whom has never seen a sound bar so am a bit
fumble-fingers about what it is and how it works. I presume then that the bar handles the
highs and connects to a sub woofer. I know that 2 jacks are audio outputs because I
connected them to a set of speakers and they work except there is no way to control their
volume. There seems to be 3 more RCA jacks which are probably what you suggest. We have
plenty of room on top of our "entertainment" center, where the TV is in it's

The sockets could be anything, Composite video in or out, Component video in or

anyway, thanks guys for your patience with me in all this.

The optical digital output socket should be on the rear of your set.
It seems there’s an analogue 3.5MM socket on the front of the set for
headphones.
The manual is a little confusing so I can’t say for sure what other sockets are
on the rear of the Television apart fro at least 1 hDMI input - also on the
front -, an LAN port and the power socket.

The Optical Digital connector looks different from other connectors.
Its a square connector and in some cases may be covered by a flap which opens
when an optical connector itself is inserted, much like the old car cassette
players we used opened when a cassette was pushed against the flap.
The Optical out jack could also possibly take the form of a 3.5MM minijack,
this arrangement is used to provide both analogue and digital audio out form
the same jack.

I found the light on the back of the TV close to the other connectors,
is that the optical digital connector for audio? This is a technology I
am totally not familiar with, so I wish to learn! I expect that in some
ways it is kind of like Bluetooth? just speculating as to how it
connects to speakers or is it somewhat like an infrared connection to
remotes where any interaction with the lights . . .

anyway, thanks guys for your patience with me in all this.

We have a Sony TV that we got a little over three years ago. The
installers gave me an HDMI cable (looks home made) with RCA male jacks
on the other end.  I plug them into my stereo auxilary inputs and, of
course, have window-rattling speakers on the other end..  The three RCA
females on the TV are for input only.  Other ways of input are through
HDMI connections.

Dolby Atmos is excellent but probably not to everyone’s taste or perhaps they
may not be interested in putting speakers on the ceiling to get the full effect
which is truly stunning if you have the Dolby Atmos material to play which is
becoming more widely available.

One thing for sure is that all modern day TV’S have a digital optical out and
the other sure thing is that the Key Egg speakers we’ve discussing along with

Re: [all-audio] TV speakers.

2019-05-05 Thread pete gurney
hi curtis,

i agree with those that say the kef egg are good as i have had these
connected to my computer for a few years and they are really good.
but like you i recently got a large screen tv and wanted something good
to go with it.
after studying as many soundbars and surround systems around in january
which is when i was getting one i came to the conclusion it had to be a
dolby atmos system as this appears to be the future of home cinema sound
systems.
this not only gives you sound from all around you but also gives sound
from above as well so it sounds like your in the middle of the action.
lots of this type of system require you to mount speakers in the ceiling
which i didn't want to do so i then started looking for something that
can do the same thing without mounting that type of ceiling speakers.
i found 2 manufacturers that sold systems with vertual atmos sound
without having to mount ceiling speakers.
they were sony and damson.
every one knows sony but probably most people wont know damson.
damson have invented the smallest dolby atmos surround system in the
world the soundbar, sub woofer, and rear speakers are all wireless and
really small compared to normal soundbars and sub woofers.
and the way they create the over head sound is that they have a small
speaker unit that magnetises
to the top of the soundbar and fires sound up to bounce off the ceiling
to give you the sense of being in the middle of everything.
the sony models do this in a different way.
they have developed what they call their virtical sound engine which
gives off sounds tiny fractions of seconds apart and as they change
those fractions it makes it sound like things are going over and around
your head.
sony have a few of these systems, the ht-x8500 which is just a stand
alone soundbar with small sub woofer built in, the ht-x9000 which comes
i believe as a soundbar with a seporate sub woofer, and the ht-f9 which
is a soundbar with seporate sub woofer plus you can buy wireless rear
speakers as an optional extra.
in the UK the ht-x8500 costs £350 and this one was only released in
january, the ht-x9000 costs £377, and the ht-f9 costs £598 plus an extra
£260 for the optional wireless rear speakers.
all of these have HDMI ARC sockets which your new tv should have the
difference between a standard HDMI and the HDMI ARC socket is that the
ARC one has an audio return channel meaning the HDMI lead connected to
this socket on the soundbar and the tv is the only connection you need
between the 2 as it sends the sound back down the same HDMI lead to feed
the sound to the sound system.
i eventually decided to get the sony system and went for the ht-f9 [at
that time the ht-x8500 hadn't been released].
the reason i went for that one was to be on the cautious side as just
like many years ago when there was betamax and vhs and no one knew who
would win the same can be said about sound now as there is dolby atmos
and dts-x competing for the best sound, but with the sony ht-f9 this
system can work with either type of sound feeds.
both the other sony models can handle both types as well.
the damson model could not handle the dts-x sound.
also the damson method of bouncing sound off the ceiling requires you to
have a completely smooth flat ceiling which i don't have as i have artex
ceilings where theres patterns engraved in them.
the sony also have a virtual dolby atmos button on the remote control
which will simulate over head sounds from non dolby atmos signals.
after having this dolby atmos sound for the last 4 months i wouldn't
want to go back to just stereo or a standard surround sound.
my ht-f9 and the ht-9000 have both wi-fi and bluetooth capability as
well but as far as i can tell the ht-8500 only has bluetooth as i can
find no mention of wi-fi.
if you can visit somewhere that have dolby atmos systems that they can
demonstrate i'm sure you wouldn't want anything else after hearing it.
hope this helps.

pete.

Re: [all-audio] TV speakers.

2019-05-04 Thread Dane Trethowan
By the sounds of your place perhaps something like the Key Egg speaker system
might be useful given you have plenty of room on your entertainment unit.
The Key Egg is a very small but flexible and good sounding bookshelf speaker
system.
Ief
like Bowers And Wilkins have been in the speaker game for over 50 years so they
know what they’re doing.

Re: [all-audio] TV speakers.

2019-05-04 Thread Dane Trethowan
The Soundbar is usually a unit the TV sits on though there may be other
configurations depending on what you want, how much space you have etc.
I’m will be purchasing a Soundbar for the Den and I plan to go out and have a
look at a few models.
As far as analogue outputs go on your Television? You’re really going to need
signed assistance to confirm that.
The sockets could be anything, Composite video in or out, Component video in or
out and perhaps audio line in or out.

thanks, these "sound bars," as such, the name confuses me, is it
confined to a small area like a bar meaning length of the bar, or would
you define it? Seems the TV has analog outputs, but they are RCA and
don't change with the TV volume, other wise it'd be easy. I don't know
if the TV has blue tooth or not. :) thanks

These are quite cheap now and no, we’re not talking about surround sound
necessarily unless you really want that.
I’ve seen 2.1 channel soundboards about the place which work quite well.
The other option might be getting something like a Key Egg system which is
effectively a small bookshelf system so you could put each speaker on either
side of the television.

think the back of the TV has RCA jacks for audio, but the output is not
variable from them so I suppose there should be a remote which can be then
handled by the main remote for volume from the cable box. We have Spectrum out
here, so the cable box now talks. So please, suggest what you recommend I buy.
My wife is getting impatient, :) (sort of) but we wish something decent
sounding which I know you guys understand. :)

THANKS and please believe me, I sort of feel in a void as to what to look for,
and where to find it. Amazon is good for us.

The first thing you will need to do is to work out whether the TV has a digital
