OK, I just found the fix for this: I needed to install the correct version of
the openoffice.org-ure package. Also note, I'm using the Go-OO build of
openoffice-3.1.

With the m39 build (featuring AA-rendering), bitmap export doesn't work. The
saved file has zero bytes. This is the case for all bitmap types (PNG, JPEG,
BMP) I tested. This is the case whether I export selected objects or the entire
page.

Is there are requirements spec for the Anti-aliasing feature?

My view is that AA-rendering in the slideshow view is more important than for
edit view, so this feature should not be in a full release until both slideshow
and edit-view have AA-rendering. (otherwise it's a regression).

This is still a significant problem in Writer, in all version up to and

The user-experience team should try working with more documents with densely

I share vtdiy's view on this so I wont restate what he's just said.

I will point out that an intermediate solution would be to make an OOo Extension
for this. With the functionality already in the OOo API, this is a relatively
straightforward task of defining an export dialog in the Dialog editor and
hooking it up to the high-resolution-export Basic macro, then adding a
toolbar/menu item to activate it. The OOo integration with the Extensions
repository makes is fairly easy to find and install enxtensions, so this is a
much better solution than saying hey, edit and run this macro, and no
specification is required.

Previously when I've attempted to make extensions, I've always failed when I
tried to package it up (figuring out the addons.xcu file is hard), however there
is now an Addons Builder extension which should simplify this. Next time I'm
in the mood, I may try this (but don't hold your breath as I've many other
things higher up on my todo list!)

The long-click paste-special menu has entries like calc8, Draw 8 and
Impress 8, for pasting as OLE objects. These labels make no sense. Lets make
these labels more descriptive e.g. embed Calc object, embed Draw object,
embed Impress object. Or choose some other sensible text.

Right now, only Writer has a sensible label: OpenOffice.org 2.2 text document.
Equivalents for Calc, Impress and Draw would be OK.

When cut 'n pasting between OOo applications, there are various options in the
Past Special menu. When pasting graphics from Draw to Writer (or
Impress-to-writer), the default paste method is paste as drawing objects. This
is a poor default, since pasting in this way results in a figure which cannot be
scaled (because scaling doesn't change the line widths or fonts in proportion).
To get nice scaling behaviour, you must paste as GDI-metafile (not editable) or
OLE-object. I useful enhancement would be a configuration option to set the
default paste-method for each type of document/object. Thus, I could avoid
always having to use the paste-special menu and could just ctrl-V directly.

The metafile representations of OOoMaths objects seems to be using the
StarSymbol font for symbols (e.g. greek). This font doesn't exist anywhere but
OOo itself is presumably replacing it with something else, since the formulas
display OK in OOo. However, MS-Word doesn't know to do this, so equations cannot
be passed to MS-Office docuements.

You can verify this by copying a OOoMaths object (containing symbols) into
OOoDraw, Break the object and examine the font for each of the symbols.

The solution would be to change the hard-coded references to StarSymbol (I not
saying this is trivial mind). Right now, it's all but impossible to get
equations between OOo and Word. Even MathType objects don't work at first,
because the OLE metafile representation itself is broken (you need to open the
object with Mathtype, to force a regeneration of the metadata).

If I set a DatabaseImportDescriptor for a database range in calc to
an SQL statement, when I do the import, it appears that calc *always* attempts
to parse the SQL, even when the IsNative flag is set to True. This is a problem
because I want to send a stored function query to a postgresql database; OOo
cannot parse such a query, so it must be send in Native mode (which works in
other situations like in Base queries).

Here's a basic script to show what I'm doing:

Sub Main
dbRange = ThisComponent.DatabaseRanges.getByName(mydbRange)
desc() = dbRange.ImportDescriptor
desc(0).Name = DatabaseName
desc(0).Value = MyDB
desc(1).Name = SourceType
desc(1).Value = com.sun.star.sheet.DataImportMode.SQL
desc(2).Name = SourceObject
desc(2).Value = select * from generate_series(0,10);
desc(3).Name = IsNative
desc(3).Value = True
dbRange.getReferredCells.doImport(desc())
End Sub

This macro fails with Syntax error in SQL expression.

However, the query works in postgresql natively and from OO-Base, provided
Native mode is selected.

One of the criticisms of OOo-Base, in comparison with MS-Access, is that the
integrated hsqldb storage engine is only suitable for single-user work (whereas
Access support multi-user databases, albeit through direct file access). Since
OOo already ships with the hsqldb.jar included, this contains the hsqldb server.
If the OpenOffice.org package set included a small application (with menu
launcher) to launch instances of the hsqldb server (as a service on Windows, or
daemon on *nix), this would be a wonderful way of providing SOHO users with a
multi-user networked RDBMS system (avoiding the hassle of setting up and
administrating MySQL/Postgresql etc.). Furthermore, OOo offers the most features
with hsql so this is a good match (MySQL lacks relationships and the postgresql
drivers are sub-par).

OO-Base will not allow any inserts or updates to database fields of either the
'money' or 'numeric' data types, when using JDBC to connect to a postgresql DB.
I've tried both the 8.1 and 8.2 jdbc drivers. I'm using Sun JRE 1.5.0_9.

For a numeric field, the error dialog says:

ERROR: column xxx is of type numeric but expression is of type character
varying

I get a similar error with 'money' fields. Basically, it's impossible to handle
currency with JDBC and postgresql.

The table data types appear correctly identified if I open the Edit Table
dialog. This appears to be over zealous type checking on the part of OOo. I can
insert or update stuff by executing SQL statements in the SQL... dialog.

It's clear there are some really quite simple things that could be done to
hugely improves the notes functionality in Writer:

1) make all areas where note-text is displayed/edited wrap text autometically
(the pop-up tool tip in the navigator window, the editor dialog, the navigator
window)

2) make the editor window non-Modal and (even better) dockable like
Navigator/Stylist.

3) make the mouse-over popup windows (which are text wrapped, thankfully) more
persistent (maybe with a keyboard shortcut to 'stick' them and a close-button to
clear it), so the user stands a chance of reading it.

Others have described more sophisticated functionality which would indeed be
wonderful, but even small changes could bring great useability improvements,
particularly if they can be implemented sooner.

Yes, JMF was registered. The mpeg plays OK in the stand-alone media-player
window. The crash only occurs when I try to insert it into a presentation.

If you've tested with an official build on linux, then this is indeed likely a
Fedora-specific (i.e. gcc-4.0) bug. I'll file the bug on the Fedora bugzilla.

If a floating frame/graphic/object is anchored to a paragraph and that paragraph
spans a page, the frame is always placed on the first page, even when this is
clearly a bad placement. Objects automatically forced onto the earlier page in
this way are placed at the bottom edge of the page, outside the text margin
area. In this position, they will obscure the footer or footnotes, if present
(for all wrap settings)

1. The objects should never be automatically placed outside the text area
(although it should be possible to manually place objects there). Objects should
certainly never obscure the footer / footnotes.

2. If objects achored to a paragraph cannot fit in the space between the top of
the paragraph and the bottom margin of the page, they should be placed at the
top of the next page (with anchor point moved to the top left of the next page,
mid paragraph, to indicate this). Note, it is possible to drag the anchor point
to this position but it is always automatically repositioned when the user
releases it.

Following is a document to illustrate this: the document has two main text
paragraphs and a single frame anchored to the second paragraph. The frame
doesn't fit at the top of the second paragraph so should be placed at the top of
teh next page. However, it is impossible to achieve this; the frame is always
placed at the bottom edge of the first page, blocking the footnote and probably
lying outside the page print area.

Applying numbering using paragraph styles does not work. This method is clearly
described in the Help text (and indeed worked well in the OOo-1.X series).

If I create a few paragraphs, apply a style, then set a numbering style in that
paragraph style, no numbering is shown. The only way I can get paragraph
numbering on is to manually turn it on for each paragraph using the Numbering
icon. This totally defeats the point of having styles-based formatting.

Can anyone (other than me) verify this on linux/unix? I think it's clear this
isn't a problem on Win32. When I checked the JMF media-player, it shared this
problem, so this is probably an underlying issue with JMF. Someone more
experienced than me should verfy however.

In fact, can anyone verfy that the media player works on linux at all. It's been
broken for ages in the betas (a different issue I know)...

The Execptions list for Autocorrect-replace-two-capitals doesn't respect the
locale setting. I have a document setup for English(UK). When I add an Exception
to the UK exception list (GHz for example), it is still converted to Ghz.

Autocorrect exceptions work OK for English(USA), however.

Note, I'm using the fedora core 1.9.112 OOo build (in case this is relevent).

See this thread:
http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?p=83906#83906

Other users report that Insert-OLE works fine on m113 builds. Maybe this issue
is specific to m112 builds (possibly the Fedora Core version).

I was trying to insert other OOo objects as linked OLE objects (e.g. .odt, .odg
etc.).

Insert-OLE Object-Create From File is broken on my Fedora Core 1.9.112
version. When I try to insert a file as an OLE object, OOo reports Operation on
file selected filename was started with an invalid parameter then Object
from file the filename could not be inserted.

This is a regression, as this feature used to work in earlier OOo-2beta versions
(around 1.9.90 I think it was OK, but I'm not total sure of the build number).

[framework-issues] [Issue 49991] Allow embedding SVG vecto r graphics into all documents.

I just checked the OASIS spec -

(page 298, see
http://www.oasis-open.org/committees/download.php/12572/OpenDocument-v1.0-os.pdf)

Images can be stored in arbitrary format (with a specified filter name).
However, the spec recommends that vector graphics are stored as SVG and bitmaps
in PNG.

Thus this seems to allow the treatment of SVGs just like PNGs: embed them in the
'Pictures' sub-directory of the document and provide an xlink:href to it
(either internal or external) and give it a new filter-type which can render SVG
for direct display (like a bitmap).

I meant that the shortcut has no effect.

Since my last comment, I've found I can get the shortcut to work if I exit and
restart the application.

However, every time I create a new shortcut to a style, the shortcut does not
work until OOo has been restarted. Thus, the defect remains.

I'm using OOo-1.9.100.

key-bindings to character-styles do not work. That is, if I open the
Configuration dialog and create a keyboard shortcut to a character style (as
opposed to a Paragraph style, for example), it doesn't work (I tried this for
ctrl-G and ctrl-shift-G but neither work).

Assigning Paragraph styles works fine, but not character styles.

Let me ammend that: custom created keybindings to paragraph styles don't work
either (I had only tested the pre-existing bindings to the Heading Styles -
ctrl-0, ctrl-1, ctrl-2 etc.). When I tried to create new bindings to other
styles, they didn't work.

Embedded movies (.mpg) are not displayed or played in any of the applications.
This has been broken for the last few builds (it used to work OK around the
1.9.70 builds).

Note, JMF and the stand-along media player window works OK. It's only when I try
to embed the movies in a document that things break. At best the movie frame is
blank. At worst, the program locks up and the process must be killed.

I get the same problem with either Java-1.5.0_01 or 1.4.2_07. I'm using
JMF-2.1.1e. I'm currently using the OOo-1.9.100 build.

If I embed a Draw document in another document (of any type) and the original
Draw doc contains a bitmap (or an object with a pattern/bitmap fill), then the
bitmap is incorrectly rendered in the containing document (i.e. the doc in which
the Drawing is embedded). The attached file should make this obvious. If I open
the Draw document for editing, the bitmap is rendered OK, but when I exit the
Drawing, the OLE view returns to the incorrect rendering.

When linking an OLE Draw or Impress document into a writer document, the wrong
page may be displayed in writer. (I.e. in Writer, select Insert-Object-OLE
Object-Create From File, and check the new Link to File box)

I guess this is because the OLE/URL system has no means of specify which
DrawPage to display. In OOo-v1.1.x OLE linking was not possible and all embedded
Draw/Impress documents had just a single page, by definition.

However, external Draw/Impress files can obviously have more than one page. Now
it is possible to link to these files, a means of selecting which page to
display is required.

Just to add to this: at present the *last* DrawPage of a linked OLE File is
always displayed. The problem occurs if you want to show a previous page in the
linked document.

Note, this problem is not apparent for OLE Calc objects: linked spreadsheets
always seem to show the correct sheet (in a multi-sheet document).

If you have a manual page break, once a line-break (or new paragraph) exists
between the top of the page and a table, it is impossible to remove that line.

For example, if you create a table at the very top of a page, you can add a
line-break between the table and the top of the page by entering Return in the
top-left cell of the table. However, you cannot perform the logical reverse of
this operation: it's not possible to select the return character immediately
before the table, to delete it.

The best one can do is select the entire table and drag-n-drop it to the top of
the page. However, this alway duplicates the table, rather than simply moving
it, so the use still need to delete the extra table. In fact, this operation is
also error-prone: the new table has an identical name to the old one (this
shouldn't be allowed surely?) and although the table structure is copied, the
table contents are moved (i.e. the old table contents are removed).

I'll attach a simple .odt doc to illustrate.

I came accross a OO-Basic macro that allow JPEG export of OO-Draw documents at
user-definable resolution. I'll attach it to this issue. I've tested the macro
and it really works! You can set both pixel resolution and 'logical' resolution.

Why isn't this functionality exposed in the user-interface ??
This is a crucial feature for any vector-drawing application.

This proves that no major internal reworking of the graphics system is required
to make this work. There's no excuse now ...

The BMP export filter has GUI-elements for setting the resolution but these are
broken. The other raster formats (PNG/JPEG/TIFF etc.) have no such options.

I got the macro from Andrew Pitonyak's Useful Macro Information BTW.

By default, the 3D-Settings toolbar automatically appear when a CustomShape is
Extruded to a 3D object. However, if the 3D-Settings toolbar is closed, there is
no way to restore the toolbar.

Either the toolbar should be automatically restored when the next 3D shape is
selected, or (preferably) this toolbar should be added to the View|ToolBars
menu list.

I'm re-opening this because

a) I don't see this as a problem is not a good reason for closing an issue.
It's a problem for me; it may be a problem for others. By closing the issue, you
remove the opportunity for others to vote or comment on this.

b) I'd like to propose an alternative solution:
Move the docked windows _inside_ the tabbed notebook pages. This way, if docked
windows vanish (because they are no longer relevent), at least the tabs
themselves do not move (this is the correct behaviour for a notebook UI anyway -
tab selection should *not* affect elements outside the notebook page). If all
windows are floating there would be no change in behaviour from the current one.

As a heavy Impress user, I've found that chasing the tabs across the top of
the page according to context (Normal or Slide-sorter view) is very fatiguing.

I'm sure the current behaviour meets the spec, but what if the spec is wrong?
I accept there are no resources to address this in the short term, but please
don't brush the issue aside. This is my last word on the subject. If you still
feel the issue should be closed I'll leave it at that.

PS. Sorry for pestering you on this. Great work on OOo-2; it's looking great
overall!

When context-sensitive toolbars are docked, their apprearance and disappearance
causes the current page to be resized. This causes serious useablility problems
for various situations.

One example is for Form Design, in Writer. In form-edit-mode, when controls have
focus, the Formatting toolbar (which is normally docked at the top of the page)
is removed. This causes the entire page to jump up every time a control is
selected. When editing a document containing a mixture of text and controls,
this continual resizing becomes very tiring.

Another example is in Draw. When a poly-line object is selected in Edit-Points
mode, the Line and Filling toolbar is removed, causing the page to jump up.
Again, this is very tiring for the user, to have their objects jump around in
front of them. In OOo-1.1.x, this toolbar was automatically replaced by the Edit
Points toolbar so resizing was avoided. One solution in this case is to have the
Edit Points toolbar docked by default so whenever the LineFill toolbar is
removed, it is replaced by a relevent alternative.

The same issue occurs with glue-point edit mode, and the Gluepoints toolbar.

Obviously, this problem is worse when large icons are used on a small display.
However, just use smaller icons would not be a correct resolution for those of
us with less-than-perfect eyesight!

I guess the current behaviour meets the spec, so I must wait for the spec to be
revised before we see any work to address this.

The SVG export filter seems to write polylines above a certain stroke-width as a
filled, closed polygons (not very elegent but basicly OK). However, below
stroke-widths it writes them as polylines, but doesn't write their stroke-widths
at all.

Thus, thin polylines are rendered at whatever the default stroke width of the
SVG renderer: usually much too thin.

I'll attached a SXD file to illustrate this, along with the result of exporting
it to SVG.

This problem occurs in both 1.1.4 and 1.9.97 versions of OOo. (I'm using linux)

oh yes, I've been testing it with a variety of MPEG-1s movies (nothing obscure
as far as I know)

The new media-player functionality needs integration with the presentation
engine object interaction/effects. At present, during a slide show, a movie-file
starts playing as soon as the containing slide is shown. If there are two movies
in a slide, both start playing together.

2 things are necessary:

a) A means of showing the Media Toolbar during a slide show, so the presenter
can manually start/stop/rewind a media clip

b) integration with the object effects system, so that media objects can be
activated in a pre-determined time-line, like other object effects

Without a means of controlling it, the media player is largely useless for any
professional presentations. Further, presentations or slide shows are the one
aspect of an office suite that *really* needs decent multimedia capability.

NB. I only tried this on linux (with JMF). I've no idea it it works the same on
Win32

The media-player toolbar has a horizontal scroll-bar (I'm not sure it's proper
name) which can be dragged to skip forwards or backwards in a movie or other
multi-media clip. When the movie is stopped or paused, dragging the scroll-bar
does not result in the visible frame being updated to reflect the new position
in the file, as you would expect. This make it very hard to determine where you
are in a movie.

- The frame visible in the media window should be updated as (or immediately
after) the scroll-bar is dragged.

[framework-issues] [Issue 42850] New - Edit embedded OLE objects in another (main) window

Editting embedded OLE objects in place is often an impractical method of
altering the embedded document: E.g. for OO-Draw object embedded in a Writer
documents, it is quite likely that the object be sized to be a small fraction of
the page. If it is necessary to make a small change to the drawing object, it
must be edited in-place (there's no other way!). However, there's no way to
zoom in the view during in-place editing, so making small-scale changes becomes
almost impossible.

I suggest an Edit in New Window function be offered in addition to the
in-place editing. This way, OLE objects can be edited with full view/zoom
adjustment.

An alternative to this would be to allow other OOo components to be linked in,
rather than embedded. For example, for a large document, I would like to have
all text and formating in a single Writer file and all drawings in a single
OO-Draw file, with all drawing linked in to the text document from this file.
Thus, to edit the drawing in the text document, I'd just edit the OO-Draw file.

At present, only bitmap graphics can be linked in. OO-Draw object *must* be
embedded. This leads to duplication of the drawing data (it exists once in the
original oo-draw file and once embedded in the Writer document).
